"Weekend Soccer 03.02-03: Mersey Loves Company"

Liverpool saunter over to Goodison Park on Sunday, relieved by having found their winning touch again this midweek (thanks to another good Mane performance), but Everton themselves seem to have righted their recent run of mediocrity after winning 3-0 at Cardiff. Still, that's just 2 wins in 6 for Marco Silva's squad and though a derby is always a special game (just ask Spurs), Liverpool will be fully aware that City are playing a Bournemouth that's been quite terrible lately.
Scant attention has been paid to Arsenal lately but a win in the North London derby would bring them to within a point of Spurs and 3rd place, while possibly profiting from United having a not necessarily easy game against Southampton.

Napoli and Juventus meet on Sunday in a game that should be exciting but not necessarily earth-shattering, so large is Juve's lead already.

EPL

02.03.19 07:30 Tottenham - Arsenal
02.03.19 10:00 Bournemouth - Manchester City
02.03.19 10:00 Brighton - Huddersfield
02.03.19 10:00 Burnley - Crystal Palace
02.03.19 10:00 Manchester United - Southampton
02.03.19 10:00 Wolves - Cardiff
02.03.19 12:30 West Ham - Newcastle
03.03.19 07:00 Watford - Leicester
03.03.19 09:05 Fulham - Chelsea
03.03.19 11:15 Everton - Liverpool

The football's been better under Smith than it was under Bruce, but without Grealish for 14 games, we missed the main impetus of our offense. And that's even with Tammy Abraham reaching 20 goals for the season already.

A 4th place trophy would be so much more likely.

A draw would be a great result here too.

A 2-1, 3-2, or prolly a 3-1 L however is more likely tho.

I actually almost wish spurs weren’t so desperate after losing 2 in a row

I said Ahlanna would cruise at home and they did. Also, wasn't expecting Sporting KC to have as easy a time with Toluca as they did. That was something.

Please don't discuss Liga MX with me. Cruz Azul are shite right now and I'm not emotionally ready.

Boo!

Great gamelan by Unai though absolutely brilliant

Calamity Mustafi - he better not be in an arsenal uni next year. What an absolute mental midget

So many great performances:

Iowbi - what a beast, he's so good now, still some inconsistency but man love what he's becoming - only 22 still

Miki- great game, what an engine. Not a huge fan, but respect due

Papa and Kos- only if Kos was 30 instead of 33

Nacho- I think he's washed, but a great game today

The only weakness was at RB - forcing us to play that POS. That Bellerin injury has been so huge

Completely fucking unacceptable. Yes we needed to finish better and PEA has to make the penalty but Spurs are clearly freakin offside and then Vertonghen (who blocks the second attempt by PEA) is 3 yards in the box

I loved their mid 90s squads.

They really are one of the traditional European powers. They just can't compete economically.

I'm glad they're getting their due tonight tho, especially at Real's expense.

some people will be held accountable. i remember that report of the president of the club scolding the entire team for not getting adequate return on their spending.

now, if it were up to me, i think "not winning the UCL" wouldn't even close to be a factor in shit going crazy at a club - i mean, it's the best teams in the world. that's a ridiculous measure. - but that's not the world we live in

we lost at home to a United B team (who played like it). I could get mad at the ref and VAR, but in light of the second half and recent history it'd be extremely disingenuous if I did that. At least the remontada was amazing, objectively, to watch. But this was just sad, and l o l at some in the British media talking up the heroics and bravery of Utd but then again overwrought narrative is the main renewable energy in that country.

I don't think we need a new coach but maybe we can sign up a psychologist or 4? On the plus side that's a whole lot of ligue 1 I don't have to watch in the next few months.

Kimpembe’s look back at the shot and his arm raising a bit made it look more intentional than it was on replay.

But PSG deserves to lose. Marquinhos and Verrate couldn’t figure out how to get through McTominay and Fred? Teuchel couldn’t just play keep-ball around a team that was clearly just dropping off? Alves has no ability to play defense any longer, just letting Shaw waltz past him...

Insane game, but the team that played with actual intensity won it. PSG can’t get up for a home knockout leg, with a lead. That “squad of mercenaries” bullshit.

yeah you've gotta take the chances you're given (props to Rashford for the pen btw, apparently that was his first time taking one for United in a competitive game), but you're not gonna tell me you honestly thought United did anything special. Hell, the last 15mins of the game they didn't really seem to want to try to score that 3rd goal, it was a bit bizzare. But since PSG was content dominating the ball and letting Mbappe (who made Smalling and Lindelof looks like Godin and Gimenez) try now and again, what should have happened did.
We fully 100% deserve this massive L (again), but what happened last night was just irrational, bordering on the mystical. And nothing illustrates that better than our best player on the pitch was probably Juan Bernat. Juan Bernat!!

But there were absolute passengers in your squad. Verrati turned in his most Verrati performance; Marquinhos was a fucking disgrace; Alves looked like the semi-retired player he is; Di Maria did little but stray offside.
You lot stroked the ball around, but, AT HOME, did almost nothing, which left the door open to what happened. Why a billion dollar team can’t get up for that game is somehthjng that will always haunt whatever sap is sitting in the manager’s seat.

My goodness...it’s one thing to lose and it’s one thing to lose on two brutal mistakes, multiple missed chances, and then regardless of what you think about the last call, even put yourself into that position.

Props to ManU for taking advantage...and hopefully this leads to some increased wear and dips their PL form.

Rescued a point in the NL Derby, don't care if he was offside DON'T CARE.

Then finished off Dortmund.

If they can win at Anfield at the end of the month and or Draw at City to secure that top 4, because otherwise the 5 & 6 teams are coming!

And that’s after he missed 14 games with a stress fracture.

Kid is still amongst it every game, dictating play.

2) despite Garry Monk swearing they wouldn’t target Grealish, Martin Kieftenfeld went right through him in like the 5th minute.

3) i *could not believe* that happened.

4) the incident took a lot out of the game for the rest of the first half, and really until McGinn came on as a sub.

5) In addition to Jack being the one to score, I took special joy in watching Craig Gardner waste Birmingham’s best chances to equalize.

hopefully he can grow into a winger, tho I remember Arsene and the player himself saying he's destined for central midfield

We were fortunate that his defensive decisions didn’t result in conceding today. Man U was targeting the left flank vs him and he made a number of mistakes (esp the latter half of the first half) where he was either turning off defensively or drifting too narrow. He will be a tremendous CM or winger.

2 crap goals including a garbage penalty.

every lucky bounce went arsenal's way including that Lukaku should have had 3 goals.

bunch a nothingburger performances too (shaw, pogba, matic specifically).

8 games left feels like we're gonna need some breaks to secure Top 4 now.

Like they should be ashamed. So many errant passes, so many instances of poor control. Some of that was caused by Juve's early pressing. Which was phenomenal, but that press wasn't there after 35' and Aleti was still doing the same.

4 wins in 4 since Grealish came back. 10 goals scored, 1 goal allowed in those games, with Jed Steer in goal. Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause looking colossal in front of Steer (and Tuanzebe’s coming back after the break). I feel good about our playoff chances.
