45
Bron hasn't missed the playoffs since his rookie year
Feb 13th 2019
47

Feb 13th 2019

Feb 13th 2019
52
This team isn't doing shit.
Feb 13th 2019
73
Zubac was decent but he's not a starter on a contender lol
Feb 13th 2019
76
Lol right, all the indicators when healthy say otherwise
Feb 13th 2019
79
nah
Feb 13th 2019
59
      Just imagine
Feb 13th 2019
62
2.5 - 4 games is alot to make up with only 25 games to play
Feb 13th 2019
63
So in other words, the Lakers are pretty much stuck in purgatory.
Feb 13th 2019
64
...and I'll be here for the hilarity that will ensue...
Feb 13th 2019
66
we still have Bron and a ton of cap space this summer, nobody though...
Feb 13th 2019
70
                For the record
Feb 13th 2019

Feb 13th 2019
82
RE: you're trying too hard lol...
Feb 13th 2019
84
he was unplayable in OKC in the playoffs
Feb 13th 2019
86
      Eh.
Feb 13th 2019
74
I'm not really concerned about the draft, outside of MAYBE Zion...
Feb 13th 2019
83
bron getting luke fired.
Feb 12th 2019
8
Lol
Feb 13th 2019
13
yeah, they're missing the playoffs.
Feb 12th 2019
9
That’s probably impossible.
Feb 12th 2019
11
so...
Feb 13th 2019
20
there are other players besides AD...
Feb 13th 2019
23
I agree, there are other options they can pursue.
Feb 13th 2019
27
this is what happens when LeBron comes to town
Feb 16th 2019
105
Yes, but other players available as good as top shelf AD
Feb 13th 2019
39
Free agents that you don't have to trade the rest of for the team for
Feb 13th 2019
44
                     Exactly. It's pretty simple calculus
Feb 13th 2019
49
I said this before the season, and people acted like I was crazy.
Feb 13th 2019
14
yup, they sure did.
Feb 13th 2019
21
I mean...Bron did miss what? 18 games...
Feb 13th 2019
24
they were 4th before Bron got hurt, once you get past the top 3 in the.....
Feb 13th 2019
25
they were 4th at a time when there were like 3 games btwn 4th and 10th
Feb 13th 2019
26
And two games out of the 2 seed while still finding our footing as well
Feb 13th 2019
30
hey man, it is what it is.
Feb 13th 2019
41
It is but all I'm saying is we can't pick & choose
Feb 13th 2019
48
So yes - they were 4th in the West and just beat the Warriors
Feb 13th 2019
38
when the Lakers were the 4 seed, the Pacers were the 3 seed...lol
Feb 16th 2019
104
LeBron teams start notoriously slow and get better
Feb 19th 2019
111
                     LeBron is notoriously older bro..
Feb 25th 2019
120
You anticipated all these injuries? I could use you as a consultant
Feb 13th 2019
29
I looked at the roster & anticipated them not being good.
Feb 13th 2019
71
Lol - and yet that roster was actually pretty good when healthy
Feb 13th 2019
80
           Good to who?
Feb 14th 2019
93
Lolz, when they were 4th in the west w/ a climbing defensive rating
Feb 14th 2019
96
Oh my bad... they were climbing in Defensive Rating! HOW DID I FORGET?
Feb 14th 2019
98
Lol, you really went for it with the Trump-esque “facts”
Feb 15th 2019
102
Is referring to Trump your "go to" now? Lol. My bad, I forgot...
Feb 16th 2019
107
I mean if that 20-14 #4 seed start was legit (.588 win %)
Feb 16th 2019
108
The first 5 games after the break aren't too bad
Feb 19th 2019
109
Fair point, should have called it "RBO-esque"
Feb 19th 2019
110
were you saying that when they were 2/3 games from the top seed
Feb 13th 2019
85
Yes, the team hasn’t been good all year.
Feb 14th 2019
94
           BULLSHIT. You didn't anticipate anything
Feb 15th 2019
99
Yeah... they were “very good”. Ohhhhh so “very good”.
Feb 15th 2019
101
Inexcusable if that happens
Feb 13th 2019
16
Bron at the end of the bench for this one too?
Feb 13th 2019
15
He often is. He uses a special raised seat for his low back

The only difference is that Gugliotta was better on the glass, whereas Kuzma is fairly indifferent there for a 6'9 guy.

We'll see if Kuz makes an All-Star team too. Gugliotta did.

Looking at other ACC comparables of the era he is right there with Joe Smith and Laettner, who had bigger billing come into the L.

If Kuz can score like Gugs scored for nearly a decade, he’ll make a shitload of money in this league and play til he’s 35.

Compounded by McGee, Bron, Rondo, and Lance being absolutely horrendous. BI and Zo are the defensive heart of this team and their net rating when on the floor together reflects that.

For one, I don't think Bron will allow it. For another, outside of the top 5-6 picks, I'm not sure there's a "win now" prospect in the draft.

Only reason to tank would be to make the pick more attractive to the Pels, I reckon... but I'm still not sure Bron would be down for that. We'll see.

The team is only one game below .500, so I would think it's too late to tank right now even if the Lakers literally lose the remainder of games left in the season.

They haven't been healthy, sure. But when healthy they are a 1st round out at best. I haven't seen anyone really take a leap yet, and the chemistry is in disarray after that embarrassing ass trade deadline. Personal feeling is I hope we miss the playoffs and get a decent pick. I'm not saying tank for Zion or anything, I'm saying - get a lotto pick and see how FA shakes out. This is another lost year, and if an AD trade doesn't happen in the offseason next year could be too.

I'm still mad about trading Zubac away.

I'm also happy to be wrong about all of this but it's bad, dude.

any team that happened to have LeBron and Zion starting on it at the same time, muchless that team being the Lakers. That would be a pretty wild scene. I guess a seemingly impossible scene since both would occupy the 4 spot, but a pretty wild scene nonetheless.

Hope folks got their resumes updated

IMO, it will come back to the failed AD trade

the LAL seemingly put all of their eggs in that basket

and in the end, got Mike Muscala and Reggie Bullock back

With so many players moving and teams ahead of the LAL in the playoff picture improving their rosters

You really have to wonder WTF was going on behind closed doors and why they weren't able to put together package(s) for other players

i.e. they f'd up, this is the payback

it's just weird the way the whole thing played out

they really are stuck in no man's land at this point

didn't get the annual Bron's reinforcements for a finals run

AND missed on AD

this season is starting to look like a nothing burger

no playoffs

no lottery pick

...shrug...

I will say this though, it is paramount that they make the playoffs this year...to set up next year

Even if it's a 1st round matchup vs GSW

this team needs that experience...in order to take the next step

success is usually an incremental exercise

you don't just go to the finals in year 1 (I'm sure Bron has in the past with the team switching...but it should be evident by now...this isn't that Bron.)

First, the lottery has changed for this year. The worst 3 teams all have an equal 14% chance. So there's that. The Lakers won't be the worst team of course, but they're only 5 games back of the 6th lottery spot, which has a 9% shot at a #1 pick so it's not like it's crazy to think they move up in the lottery after moving down in the standings.

I'm just hoping we aren't in NBA purgatory, which would be like a 1st round out or a 13th pick. Bad year all around.

more picks.

more lenient protections on those picks.

pick swap options in the off years.

more cap relief for NO.

my point was that it won't be *less* like some seem to believe.

if (when) they miss the postseason the desperation only increases. they won't be in any position to bluff or play chicken and everyone in the league knows that. they can't afford to waste another bron year waiting for 2020.

gut the teams young core and add a bunch of non-playmaking old guys to shoot jumpers while LeBron bulldozes down the lane.

I love AD but you don't trade the entire team for him unless you already have a second max star who's signed on. Even then, I don't offer Lonzo in any deal. We're seeing just how important he is to the team in his absence.

and teams like houston and utah were still finding their footing.

i never saw that lasting the whole year, even with a healthy bron. had them pegged in the 6-7-8 range.

i also disagree w your tiers. first of all, golden state isn't in any top 3 lol. they're a top 1. after that there's still a tier of 3-5 teams that are objectively better than the lakers. so no.

even when they were in 4th i personally didn't think they would finish the season there.

i always thought houston and utah would eventually pass them, even without injuries, and that they'd finish 6th at best

(which is where I had them before the season: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=8&topic_id=2675715&mesg_id=2675715&listing_type=search#2675716)

i also think that at this point in his career going forward it's probably fair to factor bron missing games into any prediction of his team's win totals. it's going to happen, and it's not an excuse. i pretty sure that he won't try to use it as one. even with him missing games they should still be good enough to beat out the damn kings lol.

Regardless of seeding, the team had some really good indicators especially with their defensive rating steadily improving and playing well while adjusting to LeBron & numerous new players. Even with the Bron injury, the team was just starting to play some great ball when Lonzo went down.

There's injuries and there's injuries to players who drive the engine. It's been a really shitty year in that regard but obviously you can't change that. They have nine days to cut the bullshit, refocus, and come together as a team for these final 25 games to make up a 3 loss deficit in the standings.

As for Bron, I disagree that he's going to miss games due to overt injuries. I know the cliche is "he's getting old" but slipping and torqueing your adductor muscles like he did is going to lead to a tear regardless of age. There's still numerous plays where he gets hit or lands awkwardly that for most players would result in an injury but he's able to mitigate that through his preventative work.

in a blowout on Christmas Day. Team was clicking. They've had ridiculous injuries -- all of the top guys been out with injuries this year (Bron, BI, Kuz, Zo, Rondo etc..) - but when Bron went down for 18 games - the team went 6-12 and the wheels fell off.

So - this team was ahead of schedule when healthy. Also - it's real bold & rich to predict that they won't make the playoffs after last night lol.

I don't know why people keep saying that as if that was necessarily sustainable. The Spurs and Jazz were out of the playoff picture. Portland and Houston were 6th and 7th respectively. The idea that the Lakers were going to remain in the 4th seed is laughable.

Like I said, the Pacers were the 3 seed in the East at the same time. I tell ya if Oladipo doesn't get hurt no way Boston and Philly catch them..

Uhm... ok.. lol

Also, Bron wasn't the only person injured... Rondo was out almost all of that time as well so they didn't have any veteran, experienced point guard, playmaker.

In this case, the team had the best record (by far) for a first year LeBron team and they were getting better and better defensively, as indicated by their defensive rating. All the indicators pointed to the team getting better, not worse...and then like you said, Rondo wasn't even playing so that's another positive indicator to add to that.

I know you're on your anti-LeBron stance but when you look at the full context of where the team was, missing the backup pg for most of the season, and how LeBron team's perform as the season progresses, it's pretty clear where the team was going.

If you had said: "This roster with Bron, Rondo, Zo all missing 15+ games, BI and JaVale missing 10+ games won't make the playoffs", then you'd be on target.

Like I said before, if you have some next level injury risk software and I missed those predictions, send it my way.

we can only rate teams that have had 100% of their roster healthy for 82 Games.

Or is this only with the Lakers?

Hey Denver Nuggets.... is everybody on the squad healthy?
Hey Minnesota Timberwolves.... is everybody on the squad healthy?
Hey Philadelphia 76ers.... is everybody on the squad healthy?

I know it's hard for you to admit they're not good. But the Lakers aren't good. I told you they wouldn't be at the beginning of the season. But hey they got 29 games to make the playoffs right?

So they should go and ball out right?

The Lakers should have no issue going 18-13 in the last 31 games LeBron is back. Seeing that they're 2-4 since his return 16-9 down the stretch keeps us right on that pace which would put us @ 44-38 and in the playoffs..

IMO I see at least 10 more Ls on the schedule all things being equal (no injuries, teams are playing for playoff position etc) but let's see what happens..

Hopefully Lonzo can get back in that time because it's pretty clear who is the head of the snake defensively. You don't drop from top 5 to worst defensive rating when a player gets hurt, just by coincidence.

It would have been easy to just let him gun like crazy but they aren't from the little I have seen. Yeah missed shots and turnovers abound but at a pretty normal level for a rookie point guard playing big minutes. To me he is never gonna be Steph, he is a better facilitator than he is a scorer at the pro level. Really good at getting in the lane and probing the defense, driving and kicking, shit like that. He can draw guys to him. He is a little bit Steve Nash-y in that regard, so it's cool that Pearce is the guy overseeing his development for now.

Collins is nice. I like his game a lot and it seems to get better every month. He is a nice big for the modern game. Rim runner, a little range, etc. He isn't a guy who needs the ball to succeed, he gives you energy and in constructive ways where guys can find him for baskets. It'd be easy to see a double-double guy on a shitty team and figure it's a function of usage but with him it's not. He is efficient and gets almost all his buckets off assists.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Guys need to take a step-back, look in the mirror, and refocus for the stretch run. There’s clearly a disconnect right now, need to get some air, address it and move forward.

As for Lonzo, the team has been dead last in def rating since he got hurt. He’s the head of the snake defensively and with his energy/pace. He’s back to modified running (underwater for now) so let’s see where he’s at in 9 days.

And LeBron not playing defense is going to naturally have a trickle down effect.

I'd imagine he turns it up in the second half and the Lakers squeeze into the playoffs. But at the moment dude does not care about defense and it's hurting the team.

they are looking ahead to the break, finishing a road trip and playing a weak ass team. definition of a trap game on the schedule.

the hawks played pretty shitty, too, well in the fourth quarter at least. it wasn't like atlanta got up to play lebron or shot out of their minds or something. they were doing their best to lose in the final ten minutes but the lakers managed to "hold my beer" their cold-booty-from-the-butt-crack play.

this team is in serious trouble. they can't stop a dime rolling dow the sidewalk right now. offensively they only have two guys playing consistently, maybe three. lebron can't just flip the switch like in the past, at least he had some defensive support before. they can't protect the rim for shit and they just traded one of their passable bigs for one of the softest fours in the league.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

You hold a team to 17 points, including a three minute scoreless stretch, and only score 18 yourself with only two during that aforementioned stretch.

People are going to get on LeBron for that fourth but he was clearly dead tired (44 minutes on the last game of a road trip, coming off a serious injury...cmon) and he still got the team so many dang good looks. My serious issue down the stretch was having Rondo on the floor rather than Bullock. We're switching everything and desperately need shooting yet our best shooter and very switchable player isn't in the game.

As for the team, we needed this break so badly. The team defense has been dead last since Lonzo got hurt and then compounded by all the trade rumors, increased minutes for Rondo, and the reality that Bron still is in about 3rd gear right now while re-acclimating. They gotta get away, let all the nonsense go, and refocus for the final 25.

he was facilitating all night. He knows what he has or doesn't have and he was getting guys great looks from the jump. I didn't see the numbers (was flipping around to four games) but he might have had double digit assists in the first half, maybe more.

both teams were turning the ball over in weird ways, a lot of pick-up game type plays being attempted. it was just bad basketball.

the break might not be long enough, especially with lebron having to do all the all-star game shit. this is a test of mettle for the leadership more than anything, i think. they have a tough situation on their hands here and not much time to wallow in it. they could easily fall out of the playoff picture if this lingers through the rest of the month even.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I can count 6 layups off the top of my head...and he still had 15 assists. Yeh, he was lackadaisical defensively but we already touched on that.

I agree with you on the leadership. There's no more time left to wallow or sulk. We essentially have to win 2 out 3 the rest of the way. The team has shown the capacity when focused but all the rumors & discontinuity have thrown a wrench into everything...we're gonna see what these guys are really made of now. Outside of Bron and BI, it hasn't been too impressive since Zo went down

lebron i think is still limited physically. how about that oop in the philly game? i turned around and said "ingraham musta throw that pass for zion williamson."

they can't rely on bron to do everything and if he does all he did in cleveland last year this team won't grow. those were veterans; they knew what they could and couldn't do. this team is still very much testing its capabilities. i don't think bron is physically able to do what he did last season at this point (and probably wasn't before the injury), and it wouldn't be good for the team long-term for him to chew himself up like that while relegating these other guys to a spectator's role.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

"LeBron rarely exerts himself beyond a casual jog in transition defense and disregards spot-up shooters in most half-court situations, leaving them wide open," Pete Zayas of Laker Film Room said. "His defensive game these days resembles a disinterested center rather than the high-end wing defender that he once was."

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

But as LA2P said, the salary dumps are TBD. I can appreciate getting rid of Mozgov - and DLo absolutely needed that change to get better. People love to say they’d have liked to see a DLo/Ball backcourt but they tend to forget DLo was liking all kinds of anti-Zo posts so there was lots of immaturity there.

The AD debacle was exactly that. A damn mess.

Zubac...I dunno man. Dumb trade. Just don’t re-sign the dude. Wtf with a damn Mike Muscala.

It seems Bron was always coming so I don’t give them credit for that.

Anyway all in all - I don’t trust this FO and I’ve given them some time to get out from under the last regime. The coaching is terrible too. It’s all bad.

Injuries are a big underlying reason but there are huge flaws in roster construction (which Pelinka tried to address at the deadline, too little too late) and coaching department. The vets they picked in the off-season have been absolutely brutal while the young guys + Bullock are actually picking up their game when it matters most.

If it wasn’t clear before than missing the playoffs should make it crystal: you have to cut loose all the dead weight, add players and coaches who fit, and build a damn team rather than all the 1 year mercenary deals.

Injuries didn’t help the situation and the team would have likely been a top 4 seed of healthy but the roster construction (overall) was poor. The injuries exposed that and now we’re seeing just how shitty these vets are.

That way, the FO has no excuses for their shitty strategy of ill-fitting vets who can’t shoot. It’s clear who is dead weight and nothing makes it crystal like completely missing expectations.

They aren’t making the playoffs. Get a lottery pick, hope it jumps into the top 3 and see what shakes out. Another cost controlled asset is great.

I honestly think BI and Bron might be the last ones standing come August.

Bill Oram asked LeBron if the notion of a playoff push was a distraction and LeBron answered it, rejecting that notion. Oram made it a point on twitter to reiterate his question and Bron's answer was rejecting that notion, not referring to any teammates.

There's nothing more disingenuous or foul than media members who try to get clicks by selectively cutting shit. Shit is pathetic.

And randles has a phenomenal season but what are we saying? That lakers should’ve passed on Lebron and kept Julius? I mean that’s the reason he is t a laker right now

Not sure that was preventing them from getting Lebron James.

But the bigger point is, the Lakers tried to shackle Julius and make him one thing (a rebounder, hustler, spark off the bench, don't dribble the ball or shoot, Kenneth Faried type).

He thought he was a young up and coming dynamic star who could make plays.

He's that.

He bet on himself.

He won.

These other motherfuckers they kept or signed are PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE Horseshit.

they wanted him to be Draymond. They wanted him to make plays. HE got tunnel vision sometimes. Even though he had court vision and passing/ball handling skills.

And I like Randle. A lot. But let’s not do revisionist history:

i gotta say randle is better than i expected (though he'd be a solid starter that's about it) and no it wasn't an either/or. at his salary he makes as much as rajon rondo, not lebron. no disrespect to rondo, but having him on a one-year deal is not as good as having randle on a two-year deal and the chance to go forward with him.

now, the argument is that rondo's deal becomes cap space this summer and randle would still be on the books. but i don't buy that argument because randle would be a great value for the money in that second year and thus both an asset to the lakers themselves or in a trade. i also think the UFA market for the lakers has gotten crowded. you know some of these guys will re-sign, so the 8-10 good UFAs out there will be half that number. is lebron's magnet that strong still? the miles are showing this year and there are a lot of team-up possibilities both among the UFAs (and also Davis) or with some other stars that are already in place. to me there is no guarantee that the lakers land one top guy, let alone two.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

When a blood clot in the upper extremities happens in the younger athletic population, it’s commonly in males involved in repetitive arm motion sports. He’ll likely be put on blood thinners and see if it resolves itself.

This is different than Bosh. He had persistent blood clots in his legs (much higher risk of breaking off and traveling to the lungs and heart) that wouldn’t resolve at all. That speaks to a systemic problem which requires lifelong meds.

He wouldn't have this problem if he went to Philly. He could rest games and shoulder far less of a workload.

Instead he goes to LA knowing he's declining. Wtf was he thinking?

Lakers fans closely following, but this makes sense. a season sweep by one of the worst teams in the NBA is not good, even with all the injuries.

when you sign LeBron you're not thinking about tanking.

191. "Jerry West, Clippers Brass Reportedly Laughed @ Lakers After Zubac Trade"
In response to Reply # 0

One of the more questionable transactions at the NBA trade deadline was the Los Angeles Lakers' decision to send Ivica Zubac and Michael Beasley to the Los Angeles Clippers for Mike Muscala, giving the Lakers a bit more shooting at the 4 and clearing a roster spot for the buyout market.

The Lakers didn't add another veteran player via a buyout, however, and according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com, Clippers consultant Jerry West—a legend as a player and long one of the game's most savvy front-office minds—had a laugh at the Lakers' expense after acquiring the young and intriguing Zubac:

"Shortly after the trade deadline, Clippers consultant Jerry West—who spent more than 40 years with the Lakers as a player, coach and executive—got together for dinner with old friends who also had former Laker ties, sources said. He couldn't believe how Zubac fell into his lap. The Clippers, sources said, never even called the Lakers to inquire about Zubac. The Lakers made the offer and the Clippers gladly accepted.

"Sources said those at the dinner table shared a hearty laugh at the Lakers' expense."

Zubac, 22, didn't see much playing time for the Lakers in his first two seasons and for large chunks of the 2018-19 campaign. But he was finally given a bigger role for the team in January and responded, averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds 18 minutes across 17 contests.

And with the Clippers he's started all 20 games he's played in, averaging 9.0 points and 7.8 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game. In those games, the Clippers are 15-5. In that same time, the Lakers have gone 5-15.

At one point, the Lakers and Clippers were jockeying for position at the bottom of the Western Conference playoff picture. But if the playoffs started today, the Clippers would be the No. 6 seed and the Lakers would be watching them from home.

Granted, Zubac alone hasn't been responsible for the Clippers' surge or the Lakers' demise. The Lakers, in particular, have been beset by injury, inexperience, the constant trade rumors during the Anthony Davis saga and poor roster construction around LeBron James.

And the Clippers were already a well-coached, solid team that played well together before players like Zubac and Landry Shamet—who came over from Philadelphia in the Tobias Harris trade and has averaged 11.3 points for the team while shooting an impressive 46.6 percent from three—joined the roster.

But the fact that the Clippers have found a role for a player in Zubac that the Lakers essentially gave away is telling of the state of the two programs. Both are expected to be major players in free agency, and while the Lakers can offer the prestige of being one of the NBA's most successful franchises and the chance to play alongside James, the Clippers, quite frankly, are the better-run organization at the moment.

In the battle for Los Angeles, a destination city for NBA free agents, that very well could be the deciding factor this summer.
