NYK tanking for Zion

Straps won't be at full strength next season

IMO, he'd be best suited staying with NYK, and playing at high level with Zion in 2021.

Teams really gonna trade for dude right now...even though he's not gonna play this season...and he's damaged goods?

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Nah, seriously. I've not seen the Knicks at all this year to know who's gonna take the weight.

Seems like Dolan wanted to position himself for a salary dump that will help them afford Durant and another legit star this upcoming off-season.

Edit: And because of Dennis' acting like a spoiled AAU player, is he even tough enough top take it from whomever it is that has been starting?

are rancid trash. Dennis Smith Jr. got a triple double when he played against the Knicks last night.

Pretty simple who should get starting minutes.

Aren't both Kyrie and KD coming up on player options this summer? I can see both those weirdos declining the player option and moving on. Kawhi is in the mix too, I guess.

if Jimmy Butler contributes in a positive sense for the Sixers in this years playoffs, I will eat my words on him being worthy of a max contract. While I respect he's a good to great defensive player, his locker room issues combined with the terrible memories I have of him clanging shots at the rim for the Bulls in the playoffs leaves me with a negative impression of the dude.

He can certainly prove me wrong though. Time will tell since one would hope he'll be a better player than he was in the past.

Other people would've heard a trade demand from a star player made in (just for example,) July and sat on it, pretending they were standing right next to the dryer when it was made so they couldn't hear it, then sat around like an idiot when the same player publicly demanded a trade in (again, just a hypothetical) September but still sat around like a bunch of assholes while the entire preseason and first month of the regular season got derailed by the utter sideshow the organization was becoming because the (theoretical) head coach/GM literally did not know how to acknowledge someone telling him "no," particularly someone that was supposed to be one of his guys.

I would hate to root for any team that reacted like that.

...suggested that.

But "KD is going to the Knicks!!!!!!!???!?!" has always been fueled by his agent/best friend being a huge Knicks fan, and the speculation that Dolan is going to give said agent a plum front office job if KD signs with them.

But hey, it's not happening anyway. ESPECIALLY not after this.

I know the knee-jerk reaction is to lambaste the Knicks, but man what a fleece job by the Mavericks.

And for all we know the Knicks might have a verbal from somebody already. It seems that's the case - why else would you part with such a special player?

This will be especially interesting to revisit in about a year. Less even.

2 first round picks, a promising rookie on a cheap contract, and cap relief for an extremely talented player who can’t stay on the court and doesn’t want to be there. It kinda sounds like a typical superstar trade.

It's still, right today, a team without any core or identity. There's nothing of interest that would bring any high profile player there.

And while I admit that I'm not in NY, my understanding is that the Dolans were never going to sell.

He was going to be a restricted free agent, and I imagine the Knicks would've matched no matter what. 'Zingis isn't exactly Patrick McCaw.

This way they lose the player they've been selling to their fans as a "cornerstone" for years now for a cheap rookie and two max slots that no true superstar player is going to take.

Oh well. Have to see what the Knicks will do from here on out since I imagine DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Mathews will probably be on the move as well.

On paper, we’re in a great position:

* We have space to max out two players in maybe the best FA class of all time
* We own all our own draft picks, plus a boatload of others
* We have no bad contracts on the books
* We have a core of interesting young talent

So I understand why some fans would be excited—there are a lot of teams who could take that foundation and build something incredible on top of it.

The problem is that the Knicks are not one of those teams. We’ll build the walls out of asbestos and install toilets made of fire.

Obviously, KP will have to pass some type of physical. But if the Knicks think his rehab will be longer than expected, at least they got a decent package for him now, rather than having '19-'20 possibly submarined as well.

Knicks use their best player/only real asset to completely clean up their cap. They get up to $75M in cap space here for the summer. They also get two firsts and possibly some assets for the flip of DJ and/or Matthews. So this deal really hinges on the success they have in free agency. Not a big fan of the move but I don't know what else was on the table and obviously KP wasn't staying. I don't buy that this was a knee-jerk move, obviously they've known for a while he wanted to bounce or at least pretty well knew it.

For Dallas, well worst-case scenario they only get KP for a year or his knee never gets better. More likely scenario they now have two central pieces with KP and Doncic. Best-case scenario they get KP on his qualifying offer next year, add another big piece and have a big three for when he signs a huge UFA deal the following season.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I would've focused on trying to keep your team's best commodity going forward, the only Knicks first round pick All-Star since... what, Mark Jackson? Instead they ditch him in what's essentially a clear-the-books move for free agents, and we know how New York's free agent acquisitions have worked out in the last two decades under Dolan.

Kd, Kyrie and Cam Reddish as their Klay Thompson.

There's no way AD would play 1 year with Knicks and say I'm leaving

I know there's a lot of if's in all this I'm 90% JOKING!!!

For what years?

They're currently winning the tank for Zion sweepstakes

plus they get 2 1st(s) from DAL

DSJr

and 2 max slots

Yo...I'm thinking the NYK made out on this one

DAL is a lotto pick this year

I don't expect them to be a playoff team next year

LOL@NYK fans...this tank looks like a come up.

Sounds like DAL is taking the gamble of being able to attract FAs...?

Luka's great...plays absolutely no defense...and with some semblance of a roster currently...is no where near a playoff seed

I don't see that changing next year...with a Staps returning from reconstructive knee surgery

I'd expect those 1st(s) to still be pretty high

Worse case scenario...they could package them together to move up

Anyway, all the hell naws from NYK fans look to be premature

For a while and it very well be both.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

The camels back was Melo with a max deal and NTC, the triangle offense, bringing in Rambis, trading for Derrick Rose, signing Joakim Noah, tweeting weird shit about Melo, not making the playoffs, and being racist toward LeBron.

But sure. A broken clock yada yada

I wasn't arguing that Phil should keep his job. I just thought it was interesting how Porzingis getting traded now is valued as a prudent move meanwhile Phil floating the idea is what ultimately got him canned.

Nothing more to the question than that.

They tanked the rest of 2019 by trading their roster, so they got RJ Barrett, and they used the leftover money they had to sign Julius Randle the next season. They also avoided spending some giant max deal on some aging not-quite-a-star, which I thought was almost certain to happen.

I'd much rather have Barrett and Randle going forward than Zingis and Hardway Jr. Not even close, to be honest.

why would they not have been able to sign Randle? and no Zingis in 18-19 was a built in autotank anyways, so Barrett isnt precluded by Zingis staying. not to mention their draft pick this year is middling. its likely that not a single component of their return ever helps them win anything.

so even if you would rather have randle and barrett, its not clear that they had to choose.

Traded it all for entirely expiring deals and picks. Without making that trade, they're definitely capped in 2020 and only able to sign players using the mid-level exception or vet minimums. So they definitely can't afford Randle without that trade imo. I suppose one could argue they could've made a different trade to deal those players away... but there aren't many times you're offered 60 mil worth of expiring contracts in a single deal.

But fair enough re: the 2019 tank. I was arguing that ditching THJ, their leading scorer at the time by a lot, helped guarantee that Top 3 pick... but looking back, their win percentage was basically the same before and after that trade, so strike that argument from the record.

You are correct that it is a positive that the Knicks didn't sign an extension for Porzingis.

Overall, it'll be next to impossible to know if the Knicks screwed up this trade in terms of what they got in return because there will never be any transparency in terms of why the Knicks had to move him so quickly and what other offers the Knicks had on the table. It still bothers me that the Knicks didn't trade him in the off-season to field more offers and it appeared the trade occurred very quickly, but it is what it is at this point. That ship has sailed and the Knicks will have to do the best with what they have going forward.

in the sense the Mavs salvaged the mistake of getting Porzingis by trading for Dinwiddie. Pretty shrewd move by the Mavs front office given how toxic an asset Porzingis was at the time he was on the Mavs.

Doubly so since both the Mavs and the Wizards ended up parting ways with him.

Will be a bitter pill to swallow as a Knicks fan if (and probably when since the Celts on paper are so loaded) he flourishes in the same damn division.

It's based on looking to see who won and who lost this trade in the long term sense. It was a consensus that the Mavs made a killing in the short term, while the Knicks were clowned for what they got in return.
