"Kyrie Irving Hot Takes = One-Way Ticket To Temecula"

this is bigger than dropping 40 on Philly in an OT win, doing what he does best (incredible feats of scoring)

lately, I've seen these wild takes about how he's killing the Celtics, stifling the growth of the team (and particularly Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward). not here but elsewhere, from Celtics fans/watchers, even.

I thought this would be OVER when he was away from LeBron (and by that extension a team in a city that is the butt of everyone's jokes), but they persist... and intensify

it's almost as if he's truly filling the void Kobe left.

(one thing I'll say about the Celtics: Marcus Morris is a damn problem, moving him to the starting line up has shown him to be a quietly effective wing.)

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

They're already ignoring their eyes, but they're also ignoring the stats. What are they using for the basis of their arguments?

He has, of anyone playing meaningful minutes on the Celtics:
- the best plus/minus
- the best On/Off differential
- the best win shares
- the best win shares per 48

If you want to ignore those stats, fine. Look at ones you understand. He has a career best assists-per-36 and his best assist rate since his rookie year. A 33.9% assist rate paired with an 11.6% TO rate. Career-best rebounding and steal rates. Career-best DRtg. His best two PERs and true shooting percentages? This season and last season. Shooting near his career-best 3-point percentage. They've won 11 of their last 15 games.

What are these Kyrie haters holding onto?

is that this is essentially the first season of "the whole team".

Tatum played WAY over his head. he basically looks like a 2nd year player is supposed to do. and he's still a more or less quality wing.

Brown is going through some stuff. Again, typical of 2nd year in the NBA.

There are injuries. Baynes is out so the Celtics reached in their bag of white bigs and pulled out Theis, who's doing all right.

That's where others like Morris step up. If it takes Hayward and Brown to come off the bench for the team to find their identity, then good for them.

But NOPE! Kyrie fault!

Well it is in the sense that this is what he wanted

To get out of CLE and Bron's shadow

Don't cry about the light being too bright.

Franchise player = responsible for franchise's performance

Dem the rules.

Just out of college Longo rode a college Longo agenda that was based on nothing but feelings. It's not a surprise that agenda ended in a giant L for exactly that reason.

Maybe the people making these anti-Kyrie comments are doing the same thing I did with Dirk. And I'm here to tell them, with first-hand knowledge, that that's a stupid thing to do.

Kind of like an agenda based on nothing but whether a player is a Duke alum?

I actually respect when people are clear as to where their biases are (because virtually every sports fan/commentator has bias and leans towards a player/team in some way). The key is to make the sound arguments supporting your bias - which you do rather religiously.

As an Illini kid growing up (Kendall Gill was the guy I posited as the elite wingman in the late 90's lol) - I'm just annoyed by the embarrassment of riches in Durham.

I try hard to do this. Obviously a lot harder with projections for young guys, since there's less data, but I try to at least be honest about the one-and-done's potential downfalls while still getting excited for their upside.

Ha! I get it. Lord knows if UNC were landing recruits like this, I'd be wildly annoyed too.

Re: the Illini-- man, I'm really rooting for Brad Underwood. Would love to see the Illini back where they should be, and Underwood has been a hell of a coach to this point in his career. They're obviously still really young, but the shoot-lots-of-3s-and-pressure-like-hell style has kept them competitive without the crucial component of, y'know, winning the games. They've had *brutal* luck both this year and last in close games-- bottom 10 in the NCAA both years in close games falling their way. Which suggests that they should regress and start winning them soon enough. In theory.

I suspect they'll get there eventually, it's just taking a bit longer as he gets more of "his guys" on the floor. Frazier, Dosunmu, and Giorgi is a really nice core going into next year though. I could argue that'd be a Top 5 returning trio in the Big 10 in 2019/2020.

Bwahahahah

Kyrie was Bron's sidekick

Durant and Steph had to team up to beat Lebron

So Lebron is the central figure in every guy you
just named

Kyrie his the biggest clutch shot in LeBron's career. Ray Allen hit the 2nd.. lol

Again, more LeBron narrative bullshit. KD left erratic ass Russ to go to the place that was the best fit & best chance to win. KD wasn't being blocked by LeBron.. lol

Shit was all gravy when Bron did it in Miami.. Live by the superteam, die by the superteam.. oh well...

except Bron joined an 8th seed, 40-something win team on the brink of mediocrity. That team had to have LeBron to accomplish what they accomplished.

KD joined a historic 73-win champion that didn't need him - and they play just as well without him.

I know. Tiny details.

Bruh they had to team up to beat Lebron, after Lebron farted
in the 73 win dinner....bwahahahahaahahah good for them,
like Golden State but Lebron COMPLETELY RUNS THE LEAGUE.
He MADE THEM TEAM UP.....OH it's true

>Shit was all gravy when Bron did it in Miami.. Live by the
>superteam, die by the superteam.. oh well...

Oh, I'm not mad, but to say Lebron doesn't run the league
is LMAOOOOOOO

He does. Where he goes dictates everything about what
everyone does. The WHOLE LEAGUE was waiting to see where
he went. Why? Because it dictates everyone else's moves.
Just like KD to GS. GS won 73 worthless ass games and
got punched in the nose by Lebron the God...oh youmad

In response to Reply # 0

Because the lion-share of Kyrie takes I see are all about how he's allegedly the greatest closer in the game - and has proven that he can be the guy on a championship caliber team (even though that actually hasn't been proven). Most of the takes I see give him the benefit of the doubt on his Cleveland exit, and even credit him for making the move to the Celtics (even though he was traded there).

For a guy who demanded a trade mid-contract and hasn't yet proven to be a substantive difference-maker to a team that was already very successful without him, he's rather beloved as a killer and somebody who is credited for wanting to be the man even if it meant leaving a perennial winner/conference champion.

this is way more nuanced than "Kyrie fault" mind you but people run with the Kyrie criticism here and go wild with it: https://tinyurl.com/Celtics-Riches

TL/DR: Celtics are an embarrassment of riches and Brad don't know what to do with it

If dude wins a ring in a Boston Celtic uniform as his team's best player he'll shut his critics up....

As for the silliness of Kyrie being some kind of team-imploding cancer best to ignore that hyperbolic chatter.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....
