Tennessee could do a lot of great things, but it's a big difference from being considered a fringe NIT team to a Final Four contender

their success has been built on outworking everyone on defense and playing team-oriented offense...that identity will be tested with lofty expectations

I didn’t even know they went further last year. Because nobody cares.

Sorry.

And that might be why Jimmy shits on recruits.

Sorry.

That also might be why you haven’t had a good pro since... since? Hakim Warrick?

Sorry.

Quade didn’t start last night. Not sure why. But we’re deep & Cal still has to figure out the lineup.

Still, he’s better off than being at Syracuse & following in the long line of Syracuse point guards that began and ended with Sherman Douglas.

and still result in a lot of those guys having prosperous pro careers

when every signee is in the top 40 of the composite, and most in the top 20, odds are that those guys are getting drafted. Monk, Adebayo, Fox were drafted almost exactly where they were rated in the 247 composite.

thats not what i would call "making pros"

usually 1 year later with the rest of their classmates

they were elite going in, so obviously theyre going to be elite coming out. the hs/aau scouting industry is good. the only way to refute it would be to point out all the Cal recruits outside the top 25-30ish range who got drafted at all, much less the first round. but thats a mighty short list, because the NBA, Rivals, Endless Motor, ESPN, 247, Cal, and K can ALL see who is going to play in the NBA before they ever even step on campus.

So he can do that. All he needed was 1 recruited pro in Carmelo. And he got the most out of him. Everyone else was what I said earlier...top 50-100 type recruits. Hakim Warrick was way under the radar as a recruit.

Great coach. Good recruiter.

In response to Reply # 50

We haven’t even been GOOD and we made a final four and a sweet 16 in the last 3 years. Defense and Boeheim knowing how to pull out games go a long way. Scholarships are back. Talent level is coming back. This year’s team will be good.

>They won’t go further this year.

We’ll see.

>And that might be why Jimmy shits on recruits.

He doesn’t through. He applauded Bazley’s agent for getting him a sneaker deal. That’s it. What’s the problem?
>Sorry.
>
>That also might be why you haven’t had a good pro since...
>since? Hakim Warrick?

Grant is solid. Dion was coming in strong in Miami before getting hurt. Cuse has put a lot kids in the pros after a year or two who weren’t even on the NBA radar before coming out of nowhere(Grant a primary example). They aren’t getting kids who would be straight out of HS if the rules allowed it and pumping up how they “develop pros”. They’re getting top 50-100 recruits and getting them to the pros, probably more consistently than anyone out there that recruits at that level.

>Sorry.
>
>Quade didn’t start last night. Not sure why. But we’re

Cool. Just wondering. His shooting stats last year looked pretty good for a freshman.

>Still, he’s better off than being at Syracuse & following in
>the long line of Syracuse point guards that began and ended
>with Sherman Douglas.

Honestly Jalen Carey might be better than him anyway. And he’s not even starting. Cuse will be good this year. Could’ve used Quade last year, but sanctions are done and the numbers and depth are back.

Dookies and Wildcats can thump their chest about nba draft picks but in terms of college basketball xs and os, Jay Wright runs shit.

TOSU vs Cinci tmw night btw... Alma Mater vs the team I grew up loving ( always a sucker for red and black combos in additions to the way Thuggins teams played)

Can't wait to retake the Big Ten and run shit on hardwood and gridiron, aka the natural order of things.

My tv is set to remind me when a few teams play...I broke down and added Duke this year.

my dear hope is that his pro team gets him to drop 20 pounds immediately. i just don't think the athleticism is sustainable for long at 285.

but that's literally the only thing to be worried about with him.

Pretty straight forward.

Those players "he left behind" had talent which led to wins for UK which led to their draft status.

Now why does this make you so mad and pressed to be wrong?

That's the better question.

In response to Reply # 81

Even with MSU worse than usual and Purdue likely to dip, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Nebraska should all be up, and I expect Michigan and Ohio State to hold fairly close to last year (I doubt OSU goes 15-3 in conf, but they'll be better than people expect).

Meanwhile, Nova should *easily* win the Big East-- last night's game was just a bad night against a great defense, I still think they'll be a Top 3/4 seed in the tournament-- but after that, you're looking at maybe Marquette as their second best team? So both the best teams in the Big East getting absolutely boatraced by what are almost certainly the two best Big 10 teams is... not a good look for conference optics, nor for eventual SOS for Big East teams in all likelihood.

Just utter dominance, start to finish. Paschall was demoralized. Truly an impressive effort.

I thought Nova would roll, especially considering Michigan's offense in the first two games was flat-out bad. They worked it out before this game tho.

Didn't expect Ignas to be a genuine contender for Big Ten ROY with Langford in the same conference, but I love what I'm seeing.

Fuck that scrub. Never liked him, still don’t.

UConn played well though. Adams and Gilbert is a tough combo. They remind me of St. Bonaventure last year, a bit but I think Adams and Gilbert are a little more dynamic than that Bonnies duo.

I think Chukwu made Cobb look good though.

first big test tonight obviously....

he's a legit 7 foot plus shot blocker and dunker...

was lukewarm on him based on his high school highlights, but he's come in a lot stronger and aggressive in the paint than I'd thought he'd be..

Bruins have a lot of depth and versatility on this squad...

Dominating shitty teams aside, UCLA can’t defend, and I question the shooting and decision-making of everyone except Wilkes. There’s no reason for a team with this much talent to be so blah.

I thought the turning point was when Tennessee was on a little second half run and started playing really sloppy; throwing the ball around and burning possessions. Kansas weathered the storm and closed out the game.

Grant Williams played mostly impressively but that 5th foul was pretty dumb. no reason to trip/challenge a guard on the break when you are in the final two minutes of a tight game and playing with 4.

Jay Bilas was correct on the broadcast -- when Admiral's shot isn't falling, he can't just keep shooting contested 20-footers. post up.

Jordan Bone is playing much better this year but Jordan Bowden needs to be more confident. the last three games it's looked like he's never shot a basketball.

Short-handed and bad luck with the traveling call.
Easy team to like. Fulkerson made some plays for even.

Happy for CRB.

but Fulk was promising to start his freshman season. he was a broken man last year but he can give good minutes if he's not too hyper.

I want to see Pons develop. especially if Turner doesn't get right this year. also Walker looks 20 pounds lighter; hopefully he can spell the frontcourt like last year during SEC play.

Team is starting to look better at times, though Howard is still coming back from his injury and struggling. Once he’s back all the way, it will help a lot. Still a long way to go but I think this team will round into form and be dangerous in March.

I can’t lie, I like Ewing’s demeanor with his players and the refs and thought he did a nice job.

In response to Reply # 157

I generally think way too many charges are called in college b-ball, and the help defender sliding in and falling down being rewarded drives me nuts. That said, we’ve lost on bad charging calls enough times that we were owed one.

And the GTown player had both hands on the ball and lowered his shoulder like a halfback. All they had to do was run the shotclock another 5 seconds and shoot right at the buzzer, and Cuse would’ve had less than 5 seconds to get the rebound and go the length of the court.

I was impressed with how GTown regrouped after going from up 15 to down 6, and took the lead back in the final minutes. They were one dumb play away from winning that one.

Battle has a history of hitting big ones.

No one else was taking that shot, and no one can convince me otherwise. He had the ball in his hands and he absolutely was not going to pass. You have to let someone else beat you with the game on the line.

Great game though.

oooo impressive!! (not really)

Matta tore off five regular-season Big Ten titles and four Big Ten Tournament titles like it were child's play, all while kicking Beilein's ass for a decade plus...

(the one thing they do have in common is disappointing title game losses, but at least we can take solace in the fact that it was to programs with superior coaching and players)

I get why OSU fans will play the "so close yet so far" argument (Lord knows I did that in 2016 when UNC lost on the Kris Jenkins shot), but the forest for the trees here is that Michigan is pretty indisputably *better* today than they were last year when they made a national title run. Better shooting, better passing, the best defense in the country. Brazdeikis is the best freshman in the country not wearing a Duke uniform, which no one saw coming. The list for best perimeter defender in the country starts with Simpson.

And I know I've said this before, but it's *really hard* to look at Beilein's major, major stylistic shift and not be absolutely blown away. Last time a high-major coach made such a stylistic shift was when Jay Wright went from saying "we're known for dribble drive" to "we're known for 3s." Beilein was always a "stellar offense will carry a mediocre defense" guy. The last two years, they haven't had the shooters that previous teams had, so he turned into a "good offense will be carried by a stellar defense" guy... basically overnight. He went from Mediocre Defense Guy in 2017 to Tony Bennett Level Defense Guy in the span of, like, 18-20 months. Just remarkable.

like, 5 racks of 5 balls around the 3 pt line and last years team wins going away. BUT despite losing MAAR and Mo they're definitely at finishing from within 10 feet, and taking a LOT of shots there. Dan Dakich always says that Beilein's best attribute as an offensive coach is getting guys *their* shots, and looking at Teske, Iggy, Matthews, and Z hes still doing that as well as ever.

Brazdeikis has been something else man. Im very interested to see how he's holding up against this schedule in a month or so. Hes got a solid build, so he might just hurdle the "wall".

And the stylistic makeover has been ridiculous. S/o to Luke Yaklich, and s/o to Beilein for such an insane level of self reflection to be able to say "we need to get better, and i need help to do it". Iggy and Poole have been enthusiastic if not "stoppers", Livers defends 50sq ft at once like Rasheed Wallace used to in Detroit, and Z/Matthews/Teske is a defensive big 3 that no one in the country can match. Ive said this before but the defense will legitimately give them a chance to win every game they play. Really fun to watch.

All other points still apply. I placed a futures bet on them. Between the odds I'm getting on Michigan, Virginia, Gonzaga, Auburn, and Tennessee, I'm liking my chances at either a nice payout or a situation in which I can hit a nice profitable hedge.

Crazy that we have a better BASKETBALL coach than UCLA... strange times

Meanwhile I love Chris Holtmann... Dude recruits his ass off (#1 class in the Big ten for 2019) and actually uses his bench and doesn't rely on one player to carry the entire offensive load.. Not to mention the halftime adjustments... Something Thad NEVER knew how to do.

We're almost back to where we belong.. As one of the best dual sport universities in the country. Florida is really the only other school that did it better

... but I very much like Michigan's odds at only losing 2, at most 3 games in conference, which should get the job done imo. It'd take some serious regression-- which I suppose is possible with the young guys, but still. I'd take Michigan's pieces over MSU's in a heartbeat.

175. "a few things about MSU"
In response to Reply # 174

Cassius Winston, who ive liked since his days at UD Jesuit, has yet to play well against Z. 6-17 with 7:5 A:TO in 2 games last year isnt much to inspire confidence.

Nick Ward is going to have problems scoring on Jon Teske. Almost as many problems as he had guarding Mo

Josh Langford isnt gonna enjoy the Charles Matthews experience. I predict at least 1 face-laugh per half.

MSU is good, but UM seems explicitly constructed to negate all of their strengths.

In response to Reply # 175

Ward is too foul-prone, can't stay on the court, and can't create-- he needs to be fed.

Winston is a really good PG, the type of guy tailor-made to be the second option or to feed the top two options. But he's small and not terribly strong and has no chance to make the pros, so good defenders can slow him down and he can struggle against more physical offensive guards himself.

Langford is a role player.

So when it comes down to March, and Duke is feeding Barrett and Zion, and Gonzaga is feeding Rui and Norvell, and Virginia is feeding Guy and hunter, and Michigan is feeding Matthews and Ignas, and UNC is feeding White and... I don't know, Maye I guess.... who is Michigan State feeding? I look down the top ten teams in America, and MSU has the least promising stars imo.

Cam is great at picking his spots, but when the game is on the line, he's the guy I want chilling outside by the 3-point line for the kick out, not the guy I want with the ball in his hands.

Besides, with the game on the line, it's White or bust, let's be honest. Anyone else with the ball in his hands, that's a wasted possession.

Gonna be another rough season for the Illini this year as they keep just working toward getting better... but next year's combo of Frazier/Dosunmu/Giorgi is almost certainly a Top 5 returning trio in the 2019/2020 Big Ten, *and* they'll put Cockburn on top of that? Yeah, they're due. I know I'm a Brad Underwood homer, but between his recruits improving with time and the fact that they've been *exceedingly* unlucky in close games (bottom 10 in KenPom Luck last season, bottom 3 in KenPom Luck this season) suggests that they're both far better than their record and they have a good outlook once the Luck regresses to the mean.

They’ve already made him the rare player known by one name. They don’t even say Duke, they say “Zion Highlights coming up at halftime”. FOH. This is worse than when Dick Vitale spent two straight seasons fellating Shane Battier during every single game he called, non-Duke games included.

He knows everyone suspects it's going to Barrett. He's been the guy with the ball in his hands in every close game, in every late possession, all year. And he knows FSU knows that.

So he sets it up to look like Bolden is setting the screen for Barrett. He even has Tre Jones RUN OVER AND TALK TO BOLDEN before the inbounds, just to confirm it in everyone's eyes. So everyone in the stadium-- EVERYONE-- and everyone watching on TV? They're all watching Barrett.

So when the action starts, not a soul notices a wide-open Cam Reddish at the top of the key. The target for that play from its inception. It was never going to Barrett. Just an absolutely masterful fucking decoy.

Genius set up, perfect execution. Brings tears to your eyes watching an old legend bust out new forms of trickery even in the late stages of his career.

if Tre Jones is seriously hurt, that will absolutely devastate Duke’s ACC title chances, let alone tournament chances. He’s in contention to be the best defender in the country, and he steadies the offense especially in transition.

Sucks, but injuries happen.

Frank made the play of the game with the steal and layup to make it 91-88 in OT, IMO.

Easily his best game this year. If he rounds into form, Cuse can still become the team they were projected to be - which was a top 4 ACC team playing for a high seed and a dangerous March team. This W helps offset some bad losses (a couple when Howard was out).

It was when he sprained Tre's shoulder. Changed the game literally in a flash.

I'm not saying he meant to do it. He didn't. It's definitely a "shit happens" scenario. And yet, because he was the guy there, like Matt Howard before him (the fuck is it about Howards?), he's the guy I hate now.

Not to be a skeptic on the tail of a loss to this team, but *so* much of your offense is predicated upon iso possessions and taking contested long 2s/drives. I lost count of the possessions in the Duke game where I shrugged and thought, "That was well-defended, not sure what else you can do." I mean, that's what your offense was last year too and y'all did your usual March run, so fuck do I know... that just doesn't seem like a recipe for sustained regular season success to me. It seems like the type of game that allows you to get hot and beat the best when you're hitting and lose to absolute shit when you're not. They'll be underdogs at least six more games this season-- I think 10-8 is a realistic goal, which should again be good for that 9/10ish seed range imo, assuming you win another big game or two.

but I think Howard can play a lot better than he has. Coming off his broken foot, he had nothing. He’s starting to look closer to100%. I think Hughes is still getting better too. Limited offense schematically and there’s zero inside scoring, but there might be enough perimeter talent to make it work more often than it has early on.

Gotta say I was kinda shocked at how Coach K looked. That old man shuffle he does to move around makes it look like he deals with a lot of pain.

The first six minutes with Tre on the floor, it looked like they'd invoke mercy rule by halftime. I'm not concerned about Cuse. We were down our two best defenders, our PG and our best wing shooter, so they took advantage on both ends. Combine that with two of our better outside shooters shooting *well* below their average from 3 on something like 25-30 attempts, and sure, recipe for an upset.

But none of that matters. Tre needs to be okay. Lose to Virginia, lose the next four, I don't care. We need Tre. He's the heart and soul of the team on both ends.

Either means puking or shitting, but it must've been bad to miss the *entire* game. Hopefully he's not too sick to get some practice in this week for UVA, because he will be desperately, desperately needed for that.

Dude seriously balled out in that game the other day. Thought the hit Coach K with a loud "Pass me the ball, sucker!"

It was my first time seeing Duke play this season. Are Zion and/or Barrett really that much better than Reddish?

Seems that Barrett and Zion get all the hype but Reddish seems like a more complete player. They were all top 5 players coming outta high school. So, I wouldn't think there would be a huge drop-off at all. Can't wait to watch more of their games to see if my thoughts are in line with their actual productivity.

In response to Reply # 225

You're right that he has an exceptional NBA skill set, but he's been a black hole on offense, rarely passing, turning over at a high rate, and his shooting has been very streaky. His drives to the basket have been overwhelmingly unsuccessful. He also disappears at times, content to float around and let RJ/Zion work.

Defensively, he's been terrific-- leading the team in steals, part of a team that was incredible defensively led by Jones and Reddish. But yeah, he's still trying to find his rhythm offensively. FSU was by *far* his best game. We'll definitely rely a lot more on him to be efficient on offense and to lead the team defensively now that Jones is out for a spell.

Still a long rebuild at Pitt, but he has some swagger back, our 2 best players are freshman, the Pete is at least a tough environment again and he has us on the bubble year 1.

The doubting of his ability to lead a program by Duke fans and Duke outsiders was 99.9% race-based, .1% jaded Oklahoma fans. He's still and will continue to be my top choice to replace K at Duke. Til then, I'll root for Pitt in all but 1-2 games each season.

I’m dying. He went back for a sarcastic, put on a show handshake like a drunk who almost just got in a bar fight after things have cooled down a bit, and got tossed! Stay in that coaching box, ya prick!!

At least he didn’t try to be cool and slap all his players 5 as he walked off this time.

Hurley is something else though.

If there’s something I hate even more than refs overdoing the charge call(and seemingly getting all excited to call it), it’s spazzy coaches that are out on the court all the time.

Ignas’s worst game of his career came at a bad time. Kohl is a tough, tough place to play, man.

Did I see correctly that Beilein is like 6-12 against Wisconsin? That’s crazy to me.
