drives nearly as well as Kyrie but afraid to drive, drives nearly as fast as Westbrook but afraid of contact

face of a franchise in desperate need of one, yet doesn't endear himself to the city AT ALL. Bare minimum effort off court too.

Consistently agitated for not being considered "Top 5" at his position. A) pays WAY too much attention to this shit and B) doesn't make his team better at all (best they've played in four years was the stretch he was out last year)

He's the anti-Scherzer here, the anti-Ovi. I'd bet he's never had a halfsmoke and his face is on the side of Ben's building...

actually, check that, he's obviously not missing offseason meals so maybe he has eaten one.

Really, it's as simple as wanting Alpha credit and attention without putting in Alpha effort. I'd like to say "he'd be a great fit __________" but I don't even know who wants a point guard who can't shoot, doesn't want to sacrifice his body (unless it's to Domino's), and who's too selfish to try to make his teammates better every night.

he shows up to Skins games in Cowboys jerseys and didn't go to a single Stanley Cup game even though they play in the same building. That shit makes fans feel a way, understandably.

You could say that about sports as a whole.

If Derrick Rose showed up at a Bears game in an Aaron Rodgers jersey, I would have viewed it through a similar lens. If nothing else, it's tone-deaf and dumb, ESPECIALLY if you haven't won anything.

If Steph Curry wanted to wear a Chiefs jersey to a Raiders game, I imagine it would be a little different.

From what I recall, Steph showed up to a Panthers/Niners game in 2016 in a Panthers jersey. May have even sat in the Owner's box. That was excused because:

1. He's Steph and he gets to do whatever he wants in the Bay Area.

2. He'd won a championship by then.

3. He's always been upfront about his unabashed Panthers fandom. Shoot, in Superbowl 50 at Levi's he banged the Panthers drum to bring out the team.

He gives up his body ALOT. He usually ends up on the ground when he drives and all of that contact is likely going to be what eventually injures him and robs him of some of his speed. He's talked about being more careful this year.

Otherwise, his whole persona is just off. It's like yo, why are you so bitter?

Some other great players have this whole "nobody believes in me" thing going on to motivate them but few wear their insecurity so publicly.

he needs to lean into his skillset, and his only really obvious bread-and-butter skill is driving.

Have you ever been to a Wizards game? Honestly just asking a yes or no question, no snark intended at all. I ask because I CANNOT TELL YOU how many times this guy pulls up from the elbow with like 18 seconds left in the shot clock and the entire crowd groans or yells "NOOOOOO!"

Yeah, his jumper is still only mediocre but I think he takes it primarily to keep teams honest and setup lanes to drive. I think even he still realizes that getting to the basket is by far his best scoring potential.

He occasionally does get hot early and falls in love with his jumper but he consistently dives to the basket 4 or 5 times a game because that's an automatic 10+ points.

I think most of the groaning though is towards the end of the game when you'd usually want Brad taking the high pressure jumpers rather than John... or John putting pressure on the defense and trying to get to the basket.

He's gotta take some jump shots to keep the defense honest and he's improved over the years... but yeah, he's still not the one you want taking a jump shot when the clock's running down.

He'd usually be better off creating for someone else or going to the basket in those situations.

But early in the game and in the flow of the play? I say go ahead because if his jump-shot is on, he's impossible to guard.

of course it's partially awful coaching and a generally uninspired culture too

But a legitimate ALL-STAR point guard should see a guy like Oubre and think "we can win three or four more games alone this year if I get this guy to a higher level"

Oubre is the best athlete on the team and has more dog in his left pinky than Wall has in his whole body. But on a team with guys like Wall and Markief Morris and shit, that type of environment can be detrimental for a young raw player.

Yeah, so Wiz faithful here.

Wall is my guy, but honestly, yeah he's entitled. His shot is still below par of the peers he insists he's better than (Lowry, Lillard, Conley). He does talk a little much in social media for someone who's not a true meat-eating Alpha.

But he's still my guy.

He does drive well and sacrifice his body. His perimeter D is up and down. But I gotta admit, he's not the truest in the sense of the word leader. Meaning he doesn't always show on the court the heart that he talks about having.

I think him not making his team mates better is a garbage argument. Porter and Beal both got better along side him and Gortat probably had his last good years getting fed. Problem is the only other guys on the team with dog in them are Beal and Oubre. And Oubre isn't starting when he probably should be.

And the Wiz's best stretch wasn't when he was out last year (though it was beneficial to Beal), it was two years ago taking Boston to 7 and just missing the conference finals. Bad coaching and defensive switching aside, everyone played to potential that year.

But honestly, Brooks and Grunfeld especially probably need to go. The team built around Wall ain't built for nothing but mediocrity. And he ain't that rising tide that raises all ships with this group.

Yeah, I said it, CUSP.

Like, fanboy me wants to say he's top five. And he's been there in years past.

Right Today? He's not honestly top five. Not clearly. Cusp. Like if you ask ten mofos right now on the street the best 5pg's in the league today, prolly only 4 dudes would put him there max. If he was truly top five, it'd be 9/10.

Right Today? Nigga cusping like shit. And he does this every year, cause the Wizards do this every year- start like dog shit, go on a streak, end up winning in the mid 40's and drawing a 5-6 seed.

Right Today? Curry, Westbrook, Irving, Lillard, Paul. Then Regular Season Lowry, then some amalgam of Wall/Kemba/Conley. Haven't seen much Simmons so I won't speak on him.

Wall two years ago could edge out or at least draw even with Irving and Lillard. As always, it's his lack of shooting ability that keeps him cusping.

If it were me, i'd tell him to just about abandon anything but his mid-range from the right of the key, cause nothing else drops for him but that shot. Just keep driving the lane, finding your teammates, and tell Brooks "fuck you" on their bogus ass switches on D and specialize in being a defensive dog like Payton.

Even in a pg-centric era where lights out shooting is expected, driving finishes, continued excellence in passing AND top tier defensive abilities (IF he can ever push it there) would finally cement him as elite.

But he ain't. He's a perennial second tier all star who is very very good but lives on 19 & 9.5 Cusp Tier Lane NW, Washington D.C. 20004.

It appears you are more of a Wizards fan than a John Wall fan/agenda rider, so kudos to you for sticking it out with him.

With LeBron gone, it has to be disappointing this team hasn't ascended to top tier status in the East. Then again, the season just started, so time will tell where this Wizards will be come playoff time.

They played well in the first 15 or so games Wall was out last year but then they were only average after that. The main issue is that Otto's shot isn't falling right now and their defense is despicable.

John's defense has ALWAYS been pathetic. He's a ball watcher who can't even stick with Shelvin Mack. If I was on his team I would not switch with him. If he's getting lit up, he's gotta learn to stay in defensive position and stay with his man. Use all that speed to beat his man to the spot on defense.

I don't think his defense has always been pathetic, but for a "leader" he don't take no pride in sticking his man either. He's all too willing to switch.

Prolly part ego, cause he don't wanna be responsible for getting torched.

Prime example: two years ago, in the 'offs against the Celtics, Isaiah Thomas was having his way with the team. Wall kept switching off leaving Morris or Gortat on speedy ass Thomas. He shot over them, or drove around their slow asses.

Brandon Jennings of all people, stuck with Thomas on a few possessions like in Game 6 or so. And he STUCK him. Didn't let him drive. Didn't switch off. Thomas passed or took bad shots for a stretch. Brandon.Fucking.Jennings.

Wall should be doing those things. More nights than most. But he doesn't.

46. "you gotta understand, the bar is SO low in this organization"
In response to Reply # 43

this is a club that hasn't made it to the East finals since 1979.

To call them consistently mediocre would be an insult to consistently mediocre teams like the Mavericks or Heat. Those teams at least broke through eventually before settling back into mediocrity. The Wizards have basically never ascended from their traditional bottom-four-seeds-best.

So the standards are laughably low. Low enough to sell Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler, and Antawn Jamison as a title-contending big three (lol).

Low enough to employ Ernie Grunfeld for over a decade. The same Ernie Grunfeld who thought it was smart to put Andray Blatche, Nick Young, and Javale McGee on the same team. The same Ernie Grunfeld who gave Ian Mahinmi 16 Million a year in an effort to save face after hometown hero Kevin Durant wouldn't even GIVE THEM A MEETING.

It's a losers' environment, and because the bar is so low there is no incentive to ever get better. That starts from the top on down. So, surely, if the decision makers never improve then the players won't either.

48. "Ernie really, really has to go....."
In response to Reply # 46

Ernie was the dude who used to be able to put together solid playoff teams. But anything that dude had in the tank was gone.

Being able to sign Arenas (coin flip aside) was a really good move.

Not signing Larry Hughes to a big payday and letting him walk was a really good move.

Essentially fleecing the Lakers for Caron Butler was a really good move.

Drafting Wall and Beal as well.

THAT'S IT. Every other move he's made covered up some other fuck up he made previously. He's just not a winning GM. His ceiling is building a 4-5 seed team. Let him go to the Nets or some other team that needs to get to playoffs that hasn't been in a while.

I think every GM has a certain number of savvy moves to make and favors to maybe call in. Ernie's expended all of his apparently. They really need a no-nonsense guy in the front office that's a lot more savvy in bringing together a grand vision. Part of what's wrong with the team now is Brooks + current roster = mismatch of abilities to execution. And Brooks ain't the greatest x and o's dude to start with.

My biggest issue with John is that he really don't take enough pride in his body during the offseason. He's 28. He can't use the regular season to get down to playing size no more. And after all these years, John hasn't learned really how to play good shutdown defense. It's maddening.

im not sure how he fits in with a team built around a semi-traditional 4 and 5 anyway, since he cant really shoot or defend. that would have worked better with Tobias imo.

and I dont think Kemba is in our price range anymore

The Wiz are my team. They typically start slow, but at this pace, I dunno if they win 30 games.

And they're healthy. Is it just an off year for everyone? I mean this SAME squad, and SAME coach won 49 games 2 years ago.

At this point I think a lack of dynamism in the front office is as much to blame. It's like, the players know that if you can play just well enough to become a fan favorite, you'll get paid the max, cause the front office doesn't want to upset a fragile fan base.

If we had a better front office that will move guys and put the franchise first, dudes would play with more of an edge.

But I gotta hold the players accountable too, and it's not just wall. Everyone getting a paycheck, particularly starters, need to show a winning attitude and leadership. We just might not have that guy on the squad anymore. Where's Paul Pierce when you need him? Cause we desperately need an old soul that don't take no shit on the team. Not young cats who haven't won shit and think they know it all.

he shows up out of shape, sulks in the corner when he doesn't have the ball, and lazes on defense, all while he demands the respect accorded to a Top Ten player, which he has never been.

so, yeah, i'd say it's fair.

Yes, he's the "leader".

And I said it's A BIT unfair. I'm not arguing he's blameless.

But that front office gave Beal a max deal after a season where he averaged 15ppg. Luckily that's panned out, so far. Otto averaged less than that, got his money, justifies not shooting more or stepping up.

Yeah, Wall is the face of the franchise and should put a better face out to the public.

But he ain't gonna. I'm just saying other factors and players figure into this year's incarnation of the Curse of Les Boulez as well.

$116M committed next year to 6 players

they literally have to blow that $hit up

6th highest payroll in the league = last place

Whoever signed that Wall contract...$46M player option...should never work in basketball again.

But Wall's contract is interesting given that him, Westbrook, and Chris Paul all have astronomically insane three year deals at the same time if I'm not mistaken.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/11/20/im-sick-this-wizards-dysfunction-boils-over-into-verbal-altercations-recent-practice

Several Washington Wizards players engaged in heated verbal altercations with each other throughout a practice late last week and hurled pointed, and sometimes profane, comments at Coach Scott Brooks and team President Ernie Grunfeld.

According to several people who witnessed the contentious practice Thursday, an on-court confrontation between John Wall and Jeff Green broke out, and so did another between Bradley Beal and Austin Rivers. In the aftermath of those respective spats, Wall directed an expletive at Brooks and Beal erupted about Grunfeld.

Multiple people who are familiar with what happened described the scene as normal during a long and grueling NBA season. They also expressed unequivocally the arguments did not turn physical and that players hashed out their differences afterward and expressed regret for growing heated in the moment. Even so, the mounting anger and embarrassment felt among players during this 5-11 start to the season have reached a boiling point, leading to a rare team fine levied at Wall and the revelation of Beal’s private frustrations directed at team management.

“This is embarrassing,” a person familiar with the team said. “This is crazy.”

"Wall was great: This was Wall's best game of the season. Whether it was the matchup with Harden or not, Wall brought his A-game on both ends of the floor.

He was locked in defensively and on offense zipped accurate passes at angles few NBA players can. He was also smooth in transition, consistently not only getting to the rim, but maintaining ball control to finish.

Wall had 35 points, 11 assists and two blocks. It was a vintage performance from a guy who some believe is on the decline. Wall reminded everyone emphatically what he is capable of. He can be downright impossible to stop and the Rockets had no answer for him."

In response to Reply # 115

there are some that are just BAD because of circumstance mostly (Suns, Cavs, Knicks, etc)

but there are two that are above and beyond dysfunctional and bad: Wizards, Bulls.

here's the statline from the Cleveland game:

Wall in 26 min:

1 pt, 0-5 FG, 0-3 3PT ... complete donut on field goals

He did have 6 assists and 4 rebounds however

but damn, Anthony Bennett boxscores from the leader when you play 26 min is not good. word was that there was an injury concern.

Beal and floppin' ass Oubre were the ones being nuisances in that game

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

the key to the Lakers making the LeBron era work is finding someone that can run the floor when he's not on it.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I go to a half dozen Wizards games a year, and have almost as long as he's been here. I can say with certainty that last night was the hardest I've ever seen him play. He was making the right passes, he was chasing rebounds, getting back on defense. Asking for 40 a night is stupid, but asking for consistent effort from a super max guy who wants to be considered an elite player is a reasonable request.

Especially about John.

He plays hard. He gets his teammates involved and has done so since being in the league.

The team isn’t as good, because his supporting cast isn’t as good. It’s as simple as that.

Sure he’s an easy target cuz he’s the star of the squad and just signed a new deal.

But as soon as they start winning again niggaz gonna be on some “OMG John Wall balling!”

FOH... it’s disgusting.

Wall, coming off his 40 points and 14 assists in a 128-110 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night, missed each of his six shots in the first half. He finished with 15 points.

''Couldn't get in a rhythm,'' Wall said. ''They called so many fouls I couldn't even play.''

"(De’Aaron) Fox also mentioned John Wall as one of the league’s fastest players. That’s undoubtedly factual, but it’s hard to tell on plays like this.

Check out @TheRenderNBA’s Tweet:

John Wall's controller runs out of battery mid game

While Wall is a prodigious All-Star talent, he invites criticism at times. ESPN’s Zach Lowe wrote last season the Wizards point guard “has spent 76.57 percent of floor time either standing still or walking, the largest such share among all rotation players, according to tracking data from Second Spectrum.”"

but it's pretty wild this is something that can actually get tracked with accuracy. The powers of technology are shining through I suppose. How is that specific stat tracked though; I'm assuming it's through review of old game footage, right? That seems incredible time and energy consuming since I'm assuming that has to be done with the human eye and not simply through digital programming.

I'm assuming that an accurate number there since Zach Lowe is a fairly reputable dude and all.

In response to Reply # 178

Second Spectrum is the official video tracking technology provider for the NBA since the 2017-2018 season. Before Second Spectrum, SportVu had been running as the main player tracking company throughout 2013-14 and 2016-17 seasons.

In 2013 Rajiv Maheswaran, Yu-Han Chang, and Jeff Su founded an sports-tech company that helps players, coaches, broadcasters, analysts, and fans visualize and contextualize large amounts of sports data. With the video tracking technology, the cameras installed on NBA arenas can collect 3D spatial data including ball/player/referee locations, movements, and other dynamic statistical/visual features. “Spatiotemporal pattern recognition” technique identifies and augments data extracted from the video to generate insights and visualize new types of stats such as Quantified Shot Quality (qSQ) and Quantified Shooter Impact (qSI) so the context produced can be used for storytelling.

Playing injured all year. Still put up good numbers. Now he's missing the rest of the season.

I predict a few "suck my dick" responses from me in the next few months.

the Wizards will need to get an above .500 or damn near close to .500; you have confidence they'll get to that level after 82 games?

And I well aware they went on a tear last year when John Wall went out, but I don't think they had the abysmal team record last year that they have now. I could be wrong since you are much more of a Wizards fan than I am.

I'll let the "hoes" part pass, even though we're right and you don't really watch this team.

I'm just going to encourage you to watch how they play over the course of the next month. Watch how much livelier they'll all seem, and more specifically watch how well the ball will move. Just watch.

And if I'm wrong, I'll come back here and take this L and accept the "hoe" mantle.

But all I'll ask for is that you watch.

But they were roughly.500 the rest of the season too. That was a big data set showing that the Wiz aren't better without (an injured) him... but they ARE just as good.

And as he gets older, he's only going to get injured more often and he's going to be less likely to have those special games that make him tolerable to his teammates.

Someone will take him dogg, I know it. These guys move around all the time, and some team is gonna think they’re one John Wall away from turning a corner. The contract is disgusting but I don’t even think that’s the number one hurdle. The biggest thing in the way of trading him is our ownership - Leonsis is loyal almost to a fault (Grunfeld), and he probably thinks if he rides with Wall long enough he’ll be vindicated (Ovechkin)

They're obviously better, playing harder, and just all around more likeable without him. This isn't even an opinion at this point. We have an open and shut case on our hands. Trade him for anything if you can, even if that means eating some of the salary for a year or two.
