Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This final will be remembered for Serena's outburst rather than this kids first GS title.

And that coupled with her feeling aggrieved about the umpiring led to her losing her shit.

My issue is that Serena is a vet at this stage, I just thought she could have handled it very differently considering her opponent who idolizes her.

Serena damn near died after giving birth. She fought to get back to this point and she's 37. These championship matches aren't guaranteed for her anymore...not foregone conclusions, like they used to be. I disagree she knew she was gonna lose. She had broken Naomi's last serve and she was about to have to serve again, then she (naomi) got a free game without serving.

It’s rare for a woman her age to still play at this level. She knows her days are numbered. You want her to lay down and lose for this youngster?

The issue is the judge implied Serena was cheating because her coach was giving her advice.. which happens a lot regardless of the rules I’m place

The ref is the one who fucked this up

It was a transparent last ditch effort to rally herself, and it deserved to fail. Serena needs to stop going McEnroe on these umps who don’t have one percent of her net worth.

Her power is surprising coming from such a small frame. Her court coverage is also pretty insane. Runs everything down.

Calling him a thief, cmon now. The sad part is Osaka was due to serve at 4-3, probably would’ve held and the final result would’ve been the exact same. Excited to see if she can reiterate this performance, women’s tennis has had too many random champs these last few years that don’t confirm

Also they really need to get rid of the coaching ban. Like Patrick Mouratoglou said, they all coach out there and the rule is just hypocritical

For the record, my teams:
MLB: Mets / Soccer: PSG
NCAA BB: Arizona / NCAA FB: Michigan
NBA: Spurs / NFL: Jets

but Osaka was annoying the shit out me with all those tears.

You won. Don’t feel bad about it. The boos weren’t for you. I know she is young and sensitive but the whole “I’m sorry I disappointed everyone by winning”

Unless she was being passive aggressive that shit was pathetic as hell. I wanted her to enjoy the moment but she seemed so sad. I just hope she doesn’t flame out due to the pressure. She got game and that serve is ridiculous but she really didn’t know the boos weren’t for her?

She's 20...TWENTY. I was goofy as shit at 20, lol. Now, she's starting down her idol...who's story she is well aware of. Throw in all the drama and then the win...that's a range of emotions, bro. As far as pressure...I don't think that's gonna be a problem for her. Like she acknowledged...everyone was there for Serena...Besides her mom, dad, coach and a few friends. Through all the stoppages and drama, she kept playing. A couple of times Serena was getting her frustrated with actual on-court play, but she held her head like a mofo.

if you having any understanding of naomi's backstory (and/or japanese culture), you'll know that serena is her idol. like, legitimate idol. homegirl said "i love you" after her semi-final win when a reporter asked her if she had a message for serena going into the final.

and japanese culture, by default, lends itself to caring about the group (fans in the stadium) over the individual. with dual citizenship, she chose to represent japan over the united states, saying her personality was more japanese than american, which it is. everything about her comments and disposition after the match were aligned with the culture. my girl (born in japan) texted me after the match saying "everything she did post-match was straight japanese."

and btw, japanese culture >>> american culture

These interview highlights are so cutely lmao. Her Indian Wells victory speech was great. She’s gonna have to grow up at some point, but she’s still a kid. She wanted to be her bubbly/awkward self but couldn’t really celebrate in light of today— especially since it happened to her hero.

I think it would’ve been awkward no matter what if she beat Serena— cause Serena is her idol— but the ump situation made it tougher.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Honestly it doesn’t matter about whether there’s a no coaching rule or not. In tennis it is all about the players on the court. You can execute or you can’t.

Everyone wants to make a big deal because this happened to Serena. She was clearly outplayed and coaching wasn’t going to help her win this past Saturday. Naomi was that good on that day.

they've built up tennis to be about the two people on the court, and about them having to work through or figure out how to fix their game in the moment. The coaches can help prepare you for your opponent, but if they bring something unexpected or find some weakness in your game and you can't tell what it is but observers tend to have a better sense of what's going on, they don't want a coach to be able to tell them that. Or if you forgot what you practiced, that's on you once the game starts. It's like taking a test. I get it and I appreciate it as something particular to the sport, 'rules' are always going to be 'made to be broken' but I don't think that means it needs to outright change just because the enforcement of it here was an issue.

drawing up plays and diagrams.

Yellin something from the stands though or hand signals...cmon we doing too much. You can't have rules that you cant enforce.

What prevents the coach from texting someone sitting in another area and then having them give a signal. What if the coach scratching his head is a symbol.

Ish is goofy.
