"College football week 1 games post"

All the other posts are full with off field drama and shame. Rightfully so, but the games are starting and I'm hyped. Also I've found myself back in IN and couldn't resist getting talked into going to the game tonight. Ross Ade ain't great, but really shows out at night.

Go boilers! Not confident, but excited. Should be a fun game regardless.

As far as the rest of the weekend:

- WV vs TN was thinking of going if I was home this weekend
- Auburn vs. Washington. Huskies are my Pac10 team + I'm team Peterson
- mich/ ND
-Miami / LSU

games like this remind me of just how impressive Northwestern's rise to pseudo-relevance has been, becuase they're still woefully under-talented relative to the powers in their conference but they remain competitive

Defense got better in second half. 3ints= 21 points in first half was too much to overcome in end

Fun, if not crazy/wild atmosphere.

Also, fuck! I forgot how long CFB games can be.

Teams so far. But I think it's an intentional trade-off. He so intently focused on intensity and driving swagger/confidence that he's fine with some undisciplined play. But not like that!

6-2 is shaky to win the coastal, but if yall can pop VT and Miami for us...

that would be super helpful

and FSU-GT has been fun as hell every time for the last decade. a 3rd ACC championship matchup would be sweet.

we're money.

if not? i dunno.

our defense is savage though. our whole starting defensive backfield will be drafted, as will a couple guys who are on the bench simply because they are underclassmen who have to wait out their higher-ups.

having Hunter Bryant and Chico McClatcher back should keep the offense ticking even though no one knows a single WR's name.

traveling across country has me just as nervous as anything. pac 12 teams just don't do that all that much.

blown out by SC, you guys, Auburn, losing by a TD at Kentucky then actually kind of "hanging" with Georgia before they were like "wait...we've got like 4 NFL running backs on our roster...bye". After the Barry Odom meltdown presser...I thought for sure he was gone...then we run off 6 wins to end the regular season. The defense cannot go anywhere but up. Last year we won the home opener against Missouri State, but they hung 42 points on us...ugh. Hopefully we choke out Tennessee-Martin today, as we should.

I count six, maybe seven wins on the schedule. I'm not worried about Wyoming. But we could easily lose four of the six, if not all six.

Purdue will be tough, obviously UGA, USC, and ALA likely will be losses and I could see Memphis giving us fits if our defense isn't tightened up by then.

I've looked at the schedule several times and I can't decide what I feel as far as a record. Like you said, the defense is going to determine a lot. While this wasn't giving up 43 to Missouri State, last year...I don't think we could see enough from Saturday's game to know anything for certain. I will say that I was disappointed by the lack of a pass rush. I feel like we have been waiting for Terry Beckner to be dominant for some time, now. The Perdue game will let us know what to really expect, I think. It'd be nice to go into the Georgia game 3-0, because we will probably have 3 straight losses, starting with the Bulldogs.

nice to see the evolution of the big 10. that game wouldve been completely unwatchable for the past decade.

fitzgerald platooning thorson in the first half was bizarre.

Bet on my boys to cover and they delivered. Few things feel better. Need Joe Giles-Harris to be healthy, but other than that, great first game against a team that beat us last year.

Dude is legit not a good coach or seemingly a program builder either.
Texas will somehow be worse after him than when Brown left
But hey, at least they started upgrading the facilities.

in what was basically an away game and without their stud LT.

with that said, if they win out in the pac (which they prob will) i would still find it hard to make a case for them in the playoffs.

This offense is WAY better than Colorado.

Probably the best true freshman linebacker in the country with Robertson.

N'Keal Harry is a 1st round pick WR and Manny can jump over your favorite DB.

Huge game against Sparty next week

the defense will be fine, even tho the mistakes were all lethal. Hawkins not coming down with that ball in the endzone seems anomalous; he was in perfect position. they were way too amped up, and once they settled down they were dominant. penalties and overrushes were the cause of most of NDs scoring drives (or turned 3 into 7)

but the offense STILL cant pass protect. ND got pressure with 4 off stunts ALL night. also waited WAY too long to get Chris Evans involved. also did not get the expected production out of TE. McKeon did nothing and Gentry only did slightly more. idk what they are gonna do about these tackles, but it seems like everyone is gonna be banking on in-season development, which... *sigh*

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

I was actually encouraged by a few things:

- Guarantano looked completely different. He was hitting timing passes and throwing darts on favorable downs for the defense. he should be the guy, and Jordan looking like a young Jalen Hurd was a nice surprise.

- OL is going to be a huge issue. our guards look like tight ends. WVU was dictating the LOS, God bless what SEC fronts will do

- Defense was in the right spots, but they just aren't talented. no wonder so many freshmen are playing in the secondary. they got baptised by an experienced qb-wr corps but there will be better days.

- Pruitt did not look overmatched and team was well-coached for the most part. second half was ugly though so he has to correct that and get them to stop the bleeding.

played well for a half but their lack of talent and weakness on OL/DL (who can rush the passer?) will show up over 60 minutes. got to keep coaching and hope some young talent develop.

fuck Grier. he was shit in the first half but had some nice throws in the second. he won't take the next step until he gets that hero ball out of his system.

i seriously dont know what the fix is for michigan...maybe they should make a serious run at dabo (the only coach who seems to have urbans number)

or go after some current assistant we have right now

(i dont get the big deal about iowa state HC matt campbell, the guy who supposedly has the inside track to TOSU job if URban ever quits or leaves)

this team is asleep. he threw a pretty deep ball to the WR, who made little to no effort to grab it and the DB made a really good play.

this game has had some odd plays to completely sway the mood. a dropped TD, a TD that the replay booth wasnt paying attention to, an embarrassing punt block return... and FSU had 4 big plays and players would fake injuries to stop their offensive flow.

Is Michigan’s problem talent or scheme? Gross.

What did Miami do all summer? They were a top 10 power through most of last year.

And the Noles could barely snap the ball right. Wholly incompetent in coaching and execution. Rolled by Virginia Tech AT HOME?

What do these teams do all Summer other than squats?

you're michigan, and it's the big 10. i understand if you lack, say, explosive skill position players (which they might) or big fast linebackers, but the midwest pumps out corn-fed OLine beasts by the pound. Either Harbaugh recruited the wrong guys or he can't teach.

they dont. not even close. which makes it even more frustrating. evem the big white TEs are SPARQ monsters.

>or big fast linebackers

Michigan doesnt even recruit that, their legit prototypes are Bush and Hudson.

but the midwest pumps out corn-fed
>OLine beasts by the pound. Either Harbaugh recruited the wrong
>guys or he can't teach.

Harbaugh's mistake was in who he hired to do both of those things. And its not exactly like they were left anything worthwhile. Hoke's. 2014 OT class (5th year players) was ONE dude (RT Juwan Bushell Beatty). The 2015 hybrid class had 3 (including 6'3 LT Jon Runyan Jr and late flier Nolan Ulizio). Drevno's 2016 tackle class had Ben Bredeson (who is a good starting LG) and...nothing. Its as much a numbers thing as anything else, made worse when '15 recruit Grant Newsome got his knee liquified. Ive mentioned literally EVERY tackle on the roster in year 3 of the program or older.

Beyond that, the oldest OTs are RSFR. You hope freshmen break through to become stars, but if they dont, most teams arent negatively impacted by that. Michigan might need them just to keep Patterson alive, which...bummer.

Ed Warriner and Greg Frey are very good tho and the freshmen ARE talented. This shouldnt be a lasting problem.

fsu has a horrible line. qb had no time to really do anything. and it didn't help that they didn't call for that replay. and later in the game, had a chance to score in the red zone but turned it over instead.

it's that simple. Saban does this nearly year. Jalen got the job the same way. only time I recall this not being done was with McElroy. He did it with McCarron, Sims, Hurts, Barnett, Coker.

This situation is different tho. Nobody that started the previous year was in jeopardy the following year. but no one came in on fire behind those guys like Tua did in the championship game.

not mad at Saban. he put the better player in. Also wouldn't be mad if Jalen left.

played better than Tua. this is a program in the middle of a dynasty; starters lose their jobs all the damn time.

not really the coach's job to decide on a starter ahead of time so the back-up has more time to transfer.

Hurts is a good player and I'm sure he could have absorbed the outraged man-crying on ESPN for a day if he wanted a starting guarantee somewhere else.

>not really the coach's job to decide on a starter ahead of

to con the player into staying when he has no legit shot at starting

Problem was, Saban never was, and it was on purpose if Tua is so clearly the man.

if I'm the coach I'd play it coy to keep a quality back-up as well. no different than recruiting promises everyone makes.

Saban is self-serving, just like every other coach at this level who knows they can get fired after one bad season.

what Hurts "deserves aint got nothing to do with it."

Hurts is a very accomplished college football QB. he got beat out by a better player.

Chad Morris didnt name a starting QB before week 1, nobody on here felt sorry for Ty Storey...

im not defending Saban, and i dont care what idiot college fans would say about Jalen if he transferred

I am just not surprised Jalen got beat out by a QB, and i'm not surprised Saban withheld the starter prior to week 1.

yet they were straight with him after spring practice once they knew which direction they wanted to go.

and im not trying to sell you that OSU is any more or less of a win at all costs program than bama or some demented 'my coach is more moral than your coach' nonsense

OSU just played this much differently.

not an NFL QB, so why force it?

could be a dark horse Heisman candidate a la Josh Nesbitt. 2000/1500/30 would not be out of the realm of possibility

definite upgrade educationally

FSU took out Francois, put four running backs in the backfield, then did a direct snap read option on 3rd and goal...from the 11-YARD LINE? holy WTF.

I liked the Taggart hire but looked like he was he trying to prove himself a genius tto the nation in one game.

Colorado @ Nebraska - should be a fun game. wonder if the Nebraska game cancellation hurts them or not.

UCLA @ Oklahoma - lol. maybe best thing that could happen to UCLA is Speight being nowhere near the football this week, but I expect Oklahoma to win by 3 TDs here

USC @ Stanford - good test for a young SC team, hard to say how good Stanford is

U of yAy @ Houston - I expect a Wildcat win here. maybe the worst offensive coordinator in college football history will realize Tate is a dual threat quarterback

AND FINALLY

SPARTY @ SPARKY - ASU actually has a ridiculous record against the Big 10, so hopefully that is maintained here. ASU looked impressive albeit a ton of penalties, but I think they have the offense to outscore the slow corn fed stuck in 1975 MSU offense.

i expect Murray to be a Heisman finalist

Cinci ran for 194 yards, Oklahoma ran for 316 last week. still laughing at that spread

yeah it'll take a lot for Arizona to win but i think they played BYU pretty solid all night then just collapsed late offensively. how good is Rice? they had a second half lead against Houston.
