"dat Morey: Bron best ever "by a bit of a big margin" (swipe)"

Before anyone get's their heart rate up, it's just postin on a Thursday in August. Relax.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/24384359/houston-rockets-gm-daryl-morey-calls-lebron-james-best-ever-big-margin

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is a stats guru. He says he has checked the numbers and there's no question: LeBron James is the best player in the history of the NBA "by a bit of a big margin."

Talking Wednesday in an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Morey said, "You look at his ability to generate wins and championship probability over time, and you basically break that down. You don't need all the numbers. You can watch as well and see that.

"But if you basically isolate that and also look at the career he's had, frankly I think at this point it's become a bit of a big margin, actually, where he's come out ahead. I know that's a little controversial."

LeBron James told Sports Illustrated in 2016 that his motivation was "this ghost I'm chasing" who played in Chicago. Ethan Miller/Getty
Morey has spent 12 seasons with the Rockets, 11 as head of basketball operations. With a background in computer science with an emphasis on statistics, he has built a Rockets team that had the best regular-season record in the NBA in 2017-18.

Talking about the Los Angeles Lakers' outlook next season with the addition of James, Morey said, "I would expect, I hope, that we're ahead of them and I would expect Golden State to be ahead of them, but I would never count out a LeBron James team. He is the greatest ever in my mind."

As the debate over Michael Jordan versus James as the greatest of all time continues unabated, ESPN looked at the numbers in May and found that James was closing fast on Jordan. The factors considered were championships added, regular-season versus playoffs stats and quality of play.

James has three titles to Jordan's six, and four MVP titles to Jordan's five. At 33, James continues to play at near-peak levels deep into his career. ESPN's conclusion was that to the extent it's close now, James' eventual superiority is all but inevitable.

Lebron, Jordan and Kareem are in a dead heat right now,
and Lebron looks like he's at least going to be a very
good player for a few more years.

Kinda obvious, almost.

I mean, if you’re boiling it down to a longevity contest and basing it on MVP’s and rings, then Kareem is the greatest.....and ESPN never mentions him.

Again, I'm open to the convo.

I'll go toe to toe with a Kareem supporter, that's a good fight. Some spots I'd win, others I'd lose, we'd likely agree to disagree but I wouldn't be at all mad at their stance.

I'll go toe to toe with a LeBron supporter, it COULD be a good fight. But most of these dudes don't fight fair. Bron has a stake but he loses in a few major ways even though he wins in a few ways too. He needs more work due to his failures. Could he still get the crown? Sure, a few more rings with the Lakers and I'd move Jordan aside. And hell, even without the rings, he might do enough to be in the convo with Jordan and Kareem as 1a, 1b, 1c. But...there's work to do.

I'd welcome a fair fight though...and I wouldn't even be mad at their stance at the end of it either, though until his careers is over, I'd respect it a bit less than the Kareem argument.

Because Rings Matter.

It made it feel like they’re just making it about longevity. Which if they are, then Kareem has the greatest resume. You can’t have the Jordan vs. LeBron debate, talk about “eventual superiority” and not mention Kareem.

IMO, that’s a little different than “whose better”? To me - we’ve seen peak LeBron. He hasn’t slipped, but it’s hard to imagine him going beyond this. Ain’t no “eventual superiority”. We’ve seen them all at their best. Whose better?

for Bron...care to point it out to me...?

No beef with an exec preferring Bron based on appearances, longevity, etc...

But words like better than MJ by a big margin, championship probability, winning

3 for 9 is actually an improbability

Those metrics are easy to refute...and he offered none.

I don't think either Jordan, Kareem or Bron (the clear top 3 GOATS) are so clear-cut above the other 2 so as to characterize their undisputed goatness "by a big margin" - but just from a statistical standpoint - the eventual analytics (once Bron is done and assuming he continues on this unprecedented trajectory deep into his career) will clearly yield him as the *statistical* favorite - and it's feasible that it will be a wide margin, too.

Efficiency ratings? off the charts.
Scoring? likely will finish top 2 all-time, maybe even #1
Assists? easily will finish top 8 - maybe even top 3
All-time playoff stats? He's already 1st in points, 1st in steals, 3rd in assists
Most game-winners/buzzer beaters in post-season history? Already #1
Has led two of the worst teams to ever appear in a Finals; constantly over-achieving with teams that wouldn't scratch the playoffs w/ out him
8 straight Finals Appearances - which is unheard of in the modern era and may never be witnessed again.

et. al

Some shit I been said years ago

You don't need advanced analytics to see that, especially after it was said repeated and defended over the past however many years since I posted that projection

So you disagree with Morey's claim today

Got it

Guess it comes down to what you value more, statistics or rangs and thangs

But yea - it's fairly easy to surmise Bron's dominance with basic fact attacks - you don't need to go into 538 nerd doldrums.

>Guess it comes down to what you value more, statistics or
>rangs and thangs

Or all of the above (including context, nuance & a thorough analysis of the entire body of work).

He’s not trying to win championships, Jordan would never have done that.

He’s talked about his legacy being secure and LA is not a serious contender this year. He obviously went there to build his fortune. I’m not mad at him at all, but there’s no way he can ever be better than MJ now.

Before that move he had a chance at least.

and when Mike had them headed for the playoffs before he got hurt, that was great stuff.

Just like it will be when LeBron helps get these young Lakers built up to be a contender.

64. "Hard to compare based on ages"
In response to Reply # 9

MJ had fewer miles on him when he was 33. Came in the league at 21. Didn’t play when he was 30. Retired again and didn’t play when he was 35-37.

LeBron’s been in the league since he was 19, with no seasons off. He’s already played more games and minutes than Mike did.

That doesn’t make 34 year old LeBron = 38 year old Mike. Age does mean something.

But 34 year old Mike had a lot fewer miles on him than 34 year old Bron does.

Everybody looks at these arguments a little differently IMO. My feeling is we’ve already seen them both at their best, so “who was better” should already be decided.

Goal posts are being moved like the last scene of a spike lee flick. Tryna elevate a dude who choked in as epic a fashion there's ever been, and excuse his lack of championships, in the one sport of the four majors where an individual player has the most influence on winning and losing.

When someone shows me Jordan choking when he had two all star teammates, I'll concede this premature plea copped half baked turd.

you're gonna have to unpack this analogy for me. succeeding the most disgraced modern (present conditions pending) presidency compared to one of the first 6, who was a legacy???

i remember wayyyy back, before the Heatles days, jambone commented on how people who said lebron didn't need all that help, were flat out wrong. like every nba champion, help is needed. the only star i can think of who didn't have all star support was hakeem during houston's first championship year, but he had some special talents that year, including a young big shot bob.

the cry was that lebron needed "help," then he got HOF help, and as soon as each year didn't end in a crown, the "help" was torn down for not measuring up. perhaps HE didn't measure up. We know that for a fact in 2011. The part no one is willing to sit and talk about because it's so damning to his overall placement in "best ever" talks. Over the course of a multiple game series, such weak play is unprecedented for a player of that caliber. I will be the first to say that he has become a better player and is extending his prime in impressive fashion, BUT stats being compiled by someone who has the ball in his hands the majority of the time are not awe inspiring.

it's only when his ability to catch 6 that his stats have now been elevated to this otherworldly metric. sorry, not buying it.

and again, I'm saying top 5 period, top 3 can be said as well. But 2011 when he had EVERYTHING going for him, and RAN through the east, against THAT particular championship team, plucky but not otherworldy? NAH SON.
