i think Kershaw can get 50 more wins in his career, Scherzer looks promising--he isn't slowing down at all, it appears. Hamels has an outside chance, Sale probably has five more years in him which would get him to 200 but he also could destroy his elbow tomorrow and Porcello has an outside shot just by longetivity and playing for a good offensive team.

i'm surprised King Felix is looking so done, but he is. and then who knows if any kids under 29 have a prayer.

and all the players they got rid of are either still good or actually got better (JD, Robbie Ray,)

the robbie ray as an all star thing is extra painful because he was supposed to be the centerpiece of the return of the VERY FIRST rebuild trade (Fister)

they fired Dombrowski and tore it up for literally no reason. the Boston turns around and hires Dombrowski and voila.

smh is right

$30 million per was a grip of money. I think the history of huge contracts for pitchers dictated you let him go. Unfortunately for the Tigers, he beat the odds and became a Hall of Fame type player.

But getting rid of JD and JV were unforgivable to me.

youre right about the money and the history, but that was the exact moment they decided to throw their cards in.

once that happened why keep *anyone*?

but JD is so damn young still. i mean...cmon. he couldve been a part of whatever they were rebuilding FOR.

I would have bet Livan would have gotten there instead of Bartolo at the end of 2012. He was 7 wins ahead of him at that point too and (maybe) 2 years younger.

Shit's crazy. Bartolo had a bad July, (0-5 in starts) but the next W he picks up puts him ahead of Dennis Martinez. Also ties him with Warren Spahn for most wins in his 40s (unofficial as I just looked at BB-Ref season ages as opposed to actual birth dates).

Pitchers after WWII to accumulate 1000 IP after 40:

Phil Niekro
Jamie Moyer
Charlie Hough
Nolan Ryan
Warren Spahn
Bartolo Colon
Randy Johnson
Tommy John

He could flounder around with injury problems for a couple years, as long as it isn't a linear decline that ends his career prematurely, he should make it

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Guys I figured had some kind of shot at 200 wins without projecting too far ahead:

Justin Verlander (199 career wins/75+ in the last 6 seasons)
John Lackey (188/60)(Retired?)
Zach Greinke (184/93+)
John Lester (171/86+)
Felix Hernandez (168/70+)
Cole Hamels (153/62+)
Dan Haren (153/34)(Retired)
Jered Weaver (150/48)(Retired)
Ervin Santana (149/53+)
Adam Wainwright (147/67+)
Kyle Lohse (147/29)(Retired)
Jamie Shields (142/55+)
Tim Lincecum (110/31)(Retired)
Matt Cain (104/19+)
Edwin Jackson (101/31+)
Brett Myers (97/0)(Retired)
Chad Billingsley (83/3)(Retired)

Plus Bartolo who was 39 years old, had just been suspended for PEDs, and had been retired 2 years before. Go figure.

So in that list you got one mortal lock (Verlander), 2 pretty good bets (Greinke, Lester), 2 outside chances (Felix, Cole), and a couple wildcards (Ervin, Wainwright). Lackey apparently still wants to pitch and only needs 12 wins, so he's not out for the count yet. So out of 17, looking at maybe 4 guys. That feels about right.

In response to Reply # 30

He hasn't looked liked Felix Hernandez much in the last 3+ seasons. The Mariners had demoted him to bullpen but then somebody got hurt so he's back in the rotation for the moment. He's got one more year on that contract. He's going to need to make an adjustment

It's wild because at the end of 2014, he was 28 and coming off a monster year. The consensus second best pitcher in baseball behind only Kershaw. Since then he's 43-33 with a 4.22 ERA failing to reach 200 IP in each of the last 3 years with stints on the DL. His strike outs down and his walks up.

The obvious undercurrent of this thread and the OE original is that it is very difficult for pitchers to stay healthy. And how they handle it when they're not young, invincible, and with awesome stuff. Some guys go up in smoke instantly (Brandon Webb), some guys figure out different ways to be successful (Sabathia, Colon), some guys magically find ways to add 3 mph back to their fastball (Verlander), and some just kind of hang on (Edwin Jackson, James Shields).
