"Poll question: Would Melo make the Rockets better?"

Rumor has it that Carmelo Anthony is in talks with The Rockets, and the Miami Heat. While I think him going to Miami means he's actually given up on being on a winning team, I think it would be better for him. He could shoot all he wants, no pressure to win big and would probably get into the 2nd round again.

I don't see him getting much tick in Houston on a championship or bust team. HOU is in an interesting situation right now, they're OLDER at key positions, and would only get older & slower by adding Melo.

Poll result (29 votes)
No, he's washed (20 votes)Vote
Yes, he can still contribute on offense. (6 votes)Vote
Lets wait & see. (3 votes)Vote

Not sure if I missed anyone.

If that’s all their forwards, I think he can help them....provided he can hold up physically and still put the ball in the basket. Not too many players are still factors, especially on contenders, in year 16 though.

As long as Melo can still do it.

And as long as Chris can hold up physically, too. Melo hasn’t played with a guard interested in getting people the ball since 40 year old Kidd.

Russ was the very least of Melo's problem last season. It was documented and discussed by numerous people how Russ went out of his way to get Melo involved and in his groove. Melo simply is not a 1st or 2nd option and he thinks he is. He's essentially going to be replacing Ariza???? He isn't in the same galaxy defensively and at this point, he's not shooting better. Melo wants the ball in his hands. How is that going to happen with either Chris or James on the floor at the same time? That's the issue, IMO.

If I remember correctly, they played together, on the court, roughly 20 to 25 minutes a game . They can fold Melo into that so that he's on the floor with one of them at a time.

And dude was probably acting the way he did to help get himself kicked off the team. He may turn into Olympic Melo while in Houston. This could work out much better than people are thinking.

I never questioned CP3 and Harden together....Melo is not at their level still, skill-wise. I also said repeatedly that I'm not in the "Melo is washed" camp. I just think he's not a lead dog, at this point.

They are both the d'antoni type players.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

970 minutes in 49 games.

they'll figure it out.

they do need to find another wing defender tho. and i'm sure they will. morey doesn't get caught off guard, that dude's always thinking 10 moves ahead.

i'm sure he considered the possibility of losing ariza and has some contingencies in mind, either for later this summer or next february.

i'm telling y'all. daryl's not done. no way losing a guy as valuable as ariza catches him unawares, without several backup plans in the hopper.

this would be a pretty intriguing move, taken in conjunction with the presumptive melo addition.

https://hoopshype.com/2018/07/30/houston-rockets-nicolas-batum-trade-rumors-ryan-anderson/

Nicolas Batum could make a lot of sense in a trade to the Rockets
By Bryan Kalbrosky | 12:05 am

The Houston Rockets are reportedly interested in trading for a defensive-minded player, especially after losing Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute.

@BenDuBose
Brian Windhorst on ESPN regarding potential #Rockets moves beyond Carmelo Anthony: "They are active in the trade market."

Says Houston is showing some willingness to take long-term money back for Ryan Anderson. "They have been talking to teams about adding defenders."

10:37 PM - Jul 27, 2018

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Rockets would be willing to move forward Ryan Anderson in exchange for a long-term contract. Anderson, 30, is owed $20.4 million next season but will come off the books after next year.

Anderson has been mentioned quite a bit in trade rumors because he does not add tremendous value on either side of the ball yet will be one of the highest-paid players on their roster.

If the the Rockets were able to add someone like Charlotte Hornets forward Nicolas Batum, it could make sense for both sides. Houston would get a significant contributor on the perimeter, while Charlotte would get to dump Batum’s big contract (potentially without surrendering an asset like a future first-round pick). Batum is one of four targets recently linked to the Rockets in such a deal, though not at all by Windhorst.

@CountingBaskets
If the Rockets grab Batum for Anderson, I think they're back to being as legit a threat as they would've been with Ariza and LMM.

5:37 PM - Jul 29, 2018

Assuming Batum opts into the final year of his contract, he will make $76.7 million until he is a free agent again in 2021. It may be tough for Houston to pay Batum north of $24 million per season over the next three years, especially if they are a luxury-tax team.

But considering the franchise is in win-now mode, Batum might be more appealing than paying Anderson without him playing in a featured role.

Batum has averaged 1.6 three-pointers per game during his career and has also had success as a distributor. He has averaged 5.7 assists per game over his last three years in Charlotte. The forward has also contributed 5.8 rebounds per game during his time with the Hornets as well.

@PaulHeadleyNBA
Batum could easily match or exceed Ariza's 3 point shooting in Houston. He's a better, more versatile defender (in my opinion anyway).

He averaged 5.5 assists a game last season.

I'll be buzzing if the Rockets get him. Make the playoffs much more interesting.

10:24 AM - Jul 29, 2018

Batum is three years younger than Ariza, who left the Rockets to sign a lucrative one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns this offseason.

Batum’s assist percentage has been in the 90th percentile or above for his position during six-straight seasons, per Cleaning the Glass. But even though he can still help a team, Charlotte would likely be enthusiastic about moving off his deal since they’re in no position to contend going forward.

It’s possible that the Rockets could even obtain a future draft pick in such a trade with the Hornets. If and when Houston adds Carmelo Anthony, it may not be the last of their moves this offseason. Perhaps trading Anderson for a player like Batum would be next on their to-do list.

well against the Warriors:

CP3-Steph
Harden-Klay
Batum-Durant
Melo-Draymond
Capela-Boogie

And Batum had a down year with the elbow injury. If he's healthy on this team, he's SOOOO valuable because he's not a ball hog guy. He's more of a facilitator that can score (mold of maybe a pippen). He could do the heavy lifting on guarding Durant and he's still an offensive threat with a decent 3pt shot (35% career shooter).

This would be great for the Rox.

batum, tucker, gordon all guard multiple positions, chris is a fireplug at the point of attack, and capela's an anchor inside.

i think once they get melo done this has a good chance of going thru. charlotte's gotta be eager to get off batum's money.

as far as playmaking, distributing, quarterbacking an offense and integrating pieces, chris is one of the best to ever do it. certainly better than the other guy, no dis.

They get to a certain point where they can't do it at a high level on a nightly basis but the skills just don't leave.

I think Melo will be a lot better than some people think in Houston.

Chris is an exquisite distributor...we know that. Melo and James together is where the the problem will come, IMO. When James dribbles for 20 seconds of the shot clock then drives, shoots, or kicks out...it's usually to a willing guy sitting patiently in the corner. If Melo decides he can be that guy...it'll work...so far, everything he's said is he does not want to be that kind of player.

and at this point in his career.

He's gonna get alot of open looks. If he can't knock it down at 40% or better they'd be better off with PJ Tucker on the floor.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

In response to Reply # 0

For:
-Bench role would mean he faces second units
-Iso-heavy system that theoretically plays to his strengths
-Prior relationship with Pringles, knows CP3
-If playing with starters, will have two playmakers to get him looks
-No real expectation of defense

Against:
-May not accept diminished role, much less readily enough to succeed
-Got plenty of iso looks last year and didn't thrive.
-CP3 demanding as hell.
-Not really a knockdown shooter but also no longer a guy you can bank on to create a lot of his own shots. OKC needed him to hit open shots as a third option, often he missed them
-Not many ways he can contribute if he isn't scoring between limited dimensions and physical decline.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

And down to 37% last season.

We’ll see if he was down 6 points last year because he’s washed, or if it was just a bad year in that regard for whatever reason.

We heard a lot about “Olympic Melo” going into last season and even his catch and shoot numbers with NY, and because of that many assumed he would fit that role well in OKC. It just didn’t work out like that.

knows how to get guys going. He understands when and where they need the ball. He understands how to create space to get guys open. A lot the little things that 90% of the point guards in the league today have no clue about.

of Chris' shorts would turn him into prime Ray Allen or something. I told y'all...he think he still REAL good!! I said as long as he still felt that way it wasn't gonna work. Don't care who the PG is. I watched all 82 reg. season games...and the Utah series...when Melo made 25 percent of WIDE open shots. He not a knockdown shooter. He still wanna get the ball and do multiple jab step/2 dribble/pullup. He don't wanna wait in that corner til James or Chris kick him the ball. LOL. That said, I have been the main voice in that I didn't think he was washed, it was never any agenda I had against dude. I just didn't think he was still a top flight guy. He thinks he is. Damn...at least it lasted a full season in OKC. It's been 11 games and they having crisis talks, LOL.

Yes he’s coming off a horrific 1-11 game where he did nothing but miss shots, so that will get the attention. Before that he just had a stretch where he had over 20 points in 3 out of 4 games and had 6 3’s in a game a couple times. So he’s had some good moments as a shooter. When that’s the only way you can get buckets and you can’t guard anyone, you’re going to be a liability on the nights they aren’t dropping though.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

He was missing open Jimmy's.

If you can't hit open shots, don't matter if its John Stockton or yinka dare passing to you.
