Essentially this has been building since January, 2015, when the Raiders were looking to hire another head coach (who would eventually be Del Rio). About 15 minutes before Papa is about to go on the air that day, it officially leaks out that Mark Davis is about to interview Mike Shannahan. Papa gets on the air and insists Al Davis would NEVER even consider hiring Shannahan, a man that Al hated to his grave.
Even though the Shannahan interview goes poorly, Mark is still pissed off. Raiders pres. of operations tells Papa he has to call Mark. Papa does, and it also doesn't go well; after an argument, Mark hangs up on him. After that, Papa says Mark stopped speaking to or acknowledging him in any way. The team cuts him from the other ancillary broadcasts (official Raiders owned stuff). And it all leads to him getting fired on July 5th; the Raiders had been waiting to announce it until they hired Musburger.
Apparently before then Gruden had wanted to see about expanding Papa's role, but Mark had wanted him gone for the last three and a half years, and used the move to Vegas as an excuse.
So, yeah, it wouldn't surprise me that Mark Davis is that big of a tool.

his dad could do the same, but at least Al had an established legacy to fall back on. Even though I think Marc is moving the team in the right direction, it's not like he's accomplished anything yet.
this is really unfortunate. I considered Papa a staple of the organization. Plus he was 100% right about Shannahan.
