"Official 2018 NBA Summer League Post...first look at rookies next week"

Remember kids: The extent to which this matters or doesn't matter is completely dependent on how well or poorly these kids perform in relation to how well or poorly YOU think they'll perform in the NBA.

I don't care if it is just summer league. If he looks anything resembling what he was coming into Mizzou...couple people will need to get fired.

Bulls made the right pick but I wish like hell they could have turned Portis or Holiday plus 22 into Denver's pick (or another 10-13 pick). I would have even been willing to take back Manimal's contract to get it done.

MPJ plus WCJ equals homerun offseason for me.

Seeing what Philly did with #10, we could have been in that discussion.

denver was targeting zhaire, and didn't expect porter to even be there @ 14. so when he fell, they scooped him with the intention of trading down.

they called washington (15) and milwaukee (17) to try to make something happen and pick up an extra asset but when zhaire came off the board at 16 it became moot and they kind of got stuck with porter. bulls couldn't have gotten in that convo with the 22, zhaire was long gone by then.

idk man, 13 teams got to take a look at the guy's medicals and said nope, we good. including the guy who was telling anyone who would listen in '96 that a 17 y.o. kobe bryant would end up being one of the GOATs. THAT guy passed on porter, TWICE.

that says it all for me. bulls fans gotta let that shit go at some point. way too big of a reach to take with other perfectly fine players still on the board.

Bulls made the right pick and we are gonna be pretty good eventually and make strides next yr.

And because we made the right pick at 7, we could have risked it later.

And I still think Denver would have done it to move Manimals contract.

I'm gonna just wait and watch. I've been wrong before...but I've been right too : https://img.fireden.net/v/image/1446/32/1446327242946.gif

let's say i'm offering to sell you a sports car. idk, a 400 thousand dollar ferrari. the cuatrociento ochenta y ocho. the spider joint.

let's say i offer this car to you for.... 10 grand. but i also tell you there's an 80% chance that it'll break down irreparably within a month.

how do you view that? are you looking at it like

whoa, a spider for 10 grand? shit yeah, sign me up! fuck it, worst case i'll drive that bitch for a month and stunt on niggas.

or

this thing's a POS, i don't want it at any price! i'm not just gonna flush 10 grand down the toilet.

i haven't seen this kid's medicals, none of us have, but if these teams were legitimately scared off by what they saw, wrt long term recurring injury risk, are you using ANY pick on him? i mean, a mid/late 1st isn't nothing, you can still get legit rotation guys and even starters in that range. punting on a pick like that on what you deem to be a flyer is a tough pill.

i mean, i hope the kid's alright and has a long prosperous career, but i saw him walk down the stairs in the pre-show and he looked like fred sanford.

"Scared money don't make money"

If I have the dough to spend (and the Bulls do as a rebuilding team with $40 mil in cap space and a spare first rounder) I'd take the chance. Doing a cost vs usage assessment, most cars need replacing in 5-7yrs anyway. With that logic, $10K to stunt for 2 months is coming out ahead (or almost breaking even) on a car that would run me $400K normally.

Besides, I think 80% is a bit high on the assumption Porter wont have a decent career.

He could be a bust...injury prone and never reaching his potential. I'm just saying, getting MPJ at 14 is like finding a partially torn $1000 bill on the ground. There's a chance a store won't take it...but they might!

having extensive familiarity and participation with this surgery, 14 is extremely risk averse. this assumes that everything went according to plan obviously, but anyone who believed he had top 5 talent but passed below ~9ish, probably out-thought themselves on some Reuben Feffer shit.

I think it was the small sample size in college too, coupled with the hip strain during workouts.

Like perfect storm to scare off teams. Even if a team sat him for a year to strengthen his back/core like the kings did with Giles' knees, it's worth the risk.

And Porter looked better in 3 games than Giles did during his one yr at Duke IMO.

and not only the injuries, but there are some red flags re: his actual game. so-so handle, not much wiggle. i've seen a lot of scouts say he's not even an nba wing, and ultimately more of a smallball 4. more a harrison barnes or otto porter than durant or mcgrady.

very detailed and thorough.

but as to the content thats all more or less in line with what i was thinking. i dont believe he wasnt the top talent available for at least 6 teams to draft, although its possible, and if he wasnt, id guess they talked themselves into it bc of the injury.

i really do think a bunch of teams made a mistake, and i bet they made it off of the same information in that piece. 10-12% re-herniation rate is probably emough to scare them, even tho that i think that number includes non-compliant and non-rehabbed patients that may or may not be in poor general health.

I'm just greedy. We had already made the 'safe' pick. Do something risky for a change.

Carter - 6'11"
Lauri - 6'11"
Porter - 6'10"
LaVine - 6'7"
Dunn - 6'4"

This could have been the lineup. If Porter is healthy, this is a budding monster of a team...and one where Porter won't have to shoulder the offensive load. He can grow into his offense and learn how to play NBA defense.

The long-term studies on players following a microdiscectomy shows they have a drop-off in year 1 and then return in year 2 to their pre-injury levels.

Denver has the front-court pieces to let him acclimate and return slowly, without the pressur and work-load of a lesser team.

The question with Porter is what is his pre-injury level in the first place?

You're faulting Trae...who's giving up 5-6 inches and 30 lbs...for wrestling his arm away from Grayson Lambeer...clamping down on his shooting arm...while he's attempting to shoot

Let me guess, you didn't see the trip attempt about 1.5 minutes earlier either

Grayson's earned his reputation. He didn't instigate with anything dirty here. If this play didn't include ESPN's two most clicked-upon names from last season in college basketball, it wouldn't even have been included in a highlight package. All of these things can be true.

I don't think grayson did anything particularly wrong. he didn't trip or punch anybody. he *did* shove lyles and he did pin his arm at the start. that happened.

but the worrying bit is how he ended it. with his arms up, face like "I didn't do anything why are you picking on me"

just like he always does.

that's the weird part about the stuff he pulls. he appears to believe no one can see him?

This is why I think Doncic is going to be ROY. He and Ayton are still very raw despite their talents and, to an extent, physical maturity. Trae Young might flat out not translate.

Sexton, Carter and Knox seems pretty polished but I bet Doncic will shine more as a rookie. He is also gonna be playing with some decent talent, not decent enough that he will ride the pine but good enough to take pressure on him between Smith, DJ, et al.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

Not gonna win much, and that will be siced to the ends of the earth, but the young talent left behind is much more than what the Cavs were left with 8 years back.

Sexton showed a lot of promise. He definitely got passing skills. But like our last lottery guard, dudes bricking wide open shots when dude finds them. Dude is the epitome of SEC SPEEEEEEEEEED on the court. Gonna be a bad man in transition. He moves well without the ball. Not great finishing at the rim, and his shot is just OK. I am too used at watching a GOAT in that uniform being godlike offensively at that position.

Cedi Osman definitely been watching Korver work. But dude's ballhandling is pretty good. He can find the big man in PnR with ease. Shot wasn't always there but he definitely brought that FIBA swag.

Zizic has a lot more tools in his arsenal than the average big. Not very fast but definitely a modern NBA 5. Watching him out there just kinda makes me mad that he nor Cedi never found their way in LeSystem.

Billy P had a bit of the Hennessy Wing about him, with a few selfish plays. He cleaned it up later. 2 way deal was smart of the Cavs to do. He'll need to play more basketball in lieu of his NCAA career being cut short.

20 wins or bust gonna be more fun to watch with these guys over Captain Assfingers Casspi and the crew.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

LOL

If this dude plays significant minutes for the Jazz in the regular season...I'll be afraid for Donovan Mitchell

So in today's episode of Grayson Lambeer - The Educated Goon

The other team is up 13 with a minute and a half to go...and dude just decides he's had enough of Lambeer 2.0...gives him a love tap open handed to the jaw...

I think it's safe to assume he was tired of lil' Lambeer's bullshit for 40+ minutes

During the regular season...as the season progresses...I have a feeling opposing teams aren't going to retaliate against a 20%FG shooting 'fiery' 'scrappy' defense first guard

I hope it doesn't happen...but I have a bad feeling opposing teams are going to target Donovan Mitchell if baby beer can't learn to play nice with others.

Wack AF shot selection, wack AF AF defense and needs to use his handle/vision as his main assets. Too bad Atlanta has nothing on their roster and a need to sell tickets, so they will probably just turn him loose and ruin his career in the process.

who is to say how smith will fare against real men but against his peers i like what i am seeing. nice mix of inside/outside ability, not so much shooting but ability to handle like a guard but finish like a big. obviously we knew he was ATH THA LET TIC (c) Sir Charles.

sexton looks good. i didn't see him much in college.

Did everything out there, including several nasty blocks.

Maybe Bulls fans will stop insisting they should've drafted Porter soon and realize the gem they have.

on any of our potential draft picks. I knew nothing about any of these people.

But the WCJ thing seemed to make some sense as there is going to be a hole at center next year when Lopez is gone. The fact that this kid can shoot the three and do a bunch of other modern day NBA things makes it seem like it was a smart pick. But I know nothing.

I was worried that MPJ's ceiling was way higher than WCJ's but the health concerns seem legitimate and WCJ looks like a steal. His timing on the blocks and defensive awareness were very impressive last night. Plus he already has an NBA body.

That's two consecutive #7's picks that look like steals for the Bulls. Props to BarfPacks

nice one.

Averaging 13 and 13 first two games in SL. Same ol' unsexy Amile shit-- strong rebounds, strong defense, great team player, picks his spots on offense well.

If Lance Thomas has had a decade-long NBA career, Amile Jefferson will make his way onto a roster.

Your mouth to god ears...
I suspend the Duke hate for Amile. As an AAU coach in Philly, I've been in the gym with him at several workouts. I watched him during breaks between drills take extra time to mentor younger guys on how to do a post move, or get themselves in position for a rebound or whatever. He was doing this a 17 y/o 5 star recruit. He just always seemed like a solid character individual. I root hard as shit for the kid and hope your prediction comes true.

We're moving towards playing a traditional 5 for less and less minutes (BroLo got minutes last year because he was one of our best options) and making it more matchup dependent.

Other than games against bigs like Marc Gasol and Joel, I'd expect for Javale/Zu to get 15 minutes max. The rest will go to our stretch 4 and 5's like Mo.

Tickets are pretty inexpensive.
My boy and I would get two tickets and just roll between the Thomas & Mack and the Cox Pavillion all day.

Try to go on a day when the Lakers are playing.
Those fans from LA come through and it's a good environment.

Try hitting up Downtown Vegas.
Definitely better for families.
Check out the Downtown Container Park on Fremont St.
It has a large robotic preying mantis outside that shoots fire.
Very kid friendly, but interesting enough for adults.

-WCJ was the right pick (for the 5th time lol) and I'm not even mad at the Hutchinson pick so far (though I would have still rather had Porter than him).

-Bamba + Issac and eventually Gordon gonna be a nightmare in about 1.5-2yrs

-Kings are gonna be fun to watch but they might not start winning games until sometime in 2019.

-The Suns are going to scare everybody this year...even if they don't win most of their games. Booker, Ayton, Bridges, Jackson...fun.

-Trae gonna start slow...and we all should have known that.

-JJJ has a lot of dawg in him

-Knox (and possibly Mitchell Robinson) may have the Knicks thinking playoffs in the 2019-2020 season.

The Magic always have some interesting pieces and they never pan out. I suspect that it's because this game still requires shooting.

>-Knox (and possibly Mitchell Robinson) may have the Knicks

They think about the playoffs every year. It's getting there that's the tricky part.

I've given up on that too. Athleticism gives you defensive potential, but an organization needs to put dudes into a position to succeed. They can't even really do that. (Probably because offense relieves defense, but still. lol)

They may go from abysmal to mediocre, but the number of young guys who went from "can't shoot" to "good shooters" is insanely low. And the Magic need good shooters.

-Gordon added a 3pt shot last year and should improve this season from there (up from 28% to 33.6% and doubled his attempts).

-Isaacs J has look wet (at least from mid range) in SL so I'm cysing (for now) (he also shot ~35% from 3 in his limited time last season)

-And Bamba has 3pt range that should get better as he gets stronger/develops.

They still need more shooting but those 3 are definitely the cogs for a defensive powerhouse.

(Though DJ Augustine shot .41% from 3 last year or Fournier shot 38%...their O needs improvement definitively but if they move from middle of the pack defensively to top 10, they could improve rapidly)

He was hot in 2017 but look at his splits, especially as the season went on. He regressed like a motherfucker. And his FT shooting really didn't improve at all, so it's not like he's adjusting that stroke. http://www.espn.com/nba/player/splits/_/id/3064290/aaron-gordon

>-Isaacs J has look wet (at least from mid range) in SL so I'm
>cysing (for now) (he also shot ~35% from 3 in his limited time
>last season)

He can shoot well enough, you just have to believe that he is *that guy,* and he's low motor, low strength, and all potential. I'd believe maybe he could be the third option/stretch shooter vibe... but I need to see a *lot* more to believe he's a difference maker. The potential is there... but again, it always is with the Magic.

>-And Bamba has 3pt range that should get better as he gets
>stronger/develops.

He shot 27% from 3 and 68% from the FT line last year. I'm... not holding my breath for him to be a DeMarcus Cousins style guy who can step out at will. I watched a *lot* of Bamba in college. My thoughts from the Justivity post:

"Despite his size, he got bullied by college bigs-- not even the biggest and strongest ones either-- because he's so thin and lanky. He's also not a very physical player at this point in general-- doesn't set hard screens, would rather watch the ball than box out, etc. He's also a guy who settles for jumpers on offense for the same reason-- and he doesn't pass well either. So, y'know, that's all scary if you're trying to take him Top 5... Get him to 250-260 lbs, teach him to bang inside a bit, and you have a quick-on-his-feet big with a 9'6 standing reach that could hit 33% from 3. That's an absurd combo of things. That's All-Star material. But if he struggles with the weight and/or his shot, he could easily just become a taller John Henson. He'll stick around the league because he's an elite shot blocker who can run the floor well and who's long enough to snag enough boards to make playing him just worthwhile enough... he should be targeted exclusively by a team in hardcore multi-year tank mode, who can afford to bring him along insanely slowly... If a team expects 22+ minutes from him next year, I think they'll be really disappointed. And he's got to go somewhere that actually develops players well, because while Bamba's a smart dude, he has a lot of game to learn."

>They still need more shooting but those 3 are definitely the
>cogs for a defensive powerhouse.

Yeah, I said the same about Elfrid Payton, Victor Oladipo, and Aaron Gordon too, and they were still bottom half of the league in defense, including along the perimeter. It's hard to see Gordon and two Gumbys and fully believe. Again, I get the potential, I love me some wingspan and what not... but yeah, I've made this mistake too many times with young teams that have good potential. I've got to see a future star on the roster, minimum-- and I'm not yet ready to see Gordon as the leader of an actually good team. Maybe if he can shoot 36+% 3PT and 75+% FT. (He's also *never* really been good defensively, which just fucking baffles me personally.)

I tried to watch the first Knicks summer league game to get a glimpse at Kevin Knox; I believe this game was televised on ESPN from what I can remember. The basketball was so ugly, I had to turn the channel after two or so possessions. You peoples in here that are able to stomach whole games of this Summer League must be truly patient individuals; I know for sure I am not.

There is usually one guy on each team I want to get a look at. I kind of focus on him to start and end the game and let the rest go by.

I can't fathom who would ATTEND these events, though then again people have done worse to escape the summer heat in Vegas.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

RoLo is most likely the starter and will probably get around 25 minutes per.

Some of these rooks are going to get all the minutes they can handle and will have the green light to do whatever dumb shit they feel like to rack up the empty stats. Don't think that will be the case with WCJ.

I think it'll be difficult for a team like the Bulls to keep the young guys off the court. The future of the team ain't in RoLo's hands, and I wouldn't be surprised if they made a move to try to get some sort of asset in exchange for him before he walks next year.

yeah i can't get enough of this kid.

it's already abundantly clear, even at this early juncture, that he didn't get the opportunity to showcase anything close to his full package in college.

back to the hoop. face-up. long ball. nice floater. finishes at the rim with either hand. runs the floor hard. attacks the glass on both ends. excellent passer on the short roll and from the elbow. can switch out and stay in front of guards on the perimeter. protects the rim.

he's a perfect fit next to lauri. bulls got a fucking steal.

And even then, he showed it during Duke's M2M phase, it's just everyone else wasn't nearly as good as he was at it. It was very evident that he was a good defender to anyone who watched.

The production was all there. He had comparable OREB% to Bagley and Ayton, better than Bamba and Jackson. Better 3P% than all of them. Better FT% than all but Jackson. Better assist rate than all of them. Better at drawing fouls than all but Jackson. His block rate could've been higher outside of the zone, but even then, he was *still* Top 3 in the draft at it.

I think people just got caught up in the "upside" of the others, meaning their superior athleticism or whatever. They failed to realize how strong and balanced dude's game was and how his youth means his skills still have upside too.

Still flabbergasted dude wasn't taken Top 5. SMH. Thank God he ended up with Hoiberg and Lauri, man.

obv i didn't watch him like you did, but from what i've read/gathered there's a lot in his bag that he simply wasn't asked to do @ duke.

Duke fans are used to screaming about wanting more touches for the big men year in and year out, so yeah, they could've/should've fed him more.

But they did use him in PnR a good amount, showed his ability to operate from the top of the key (his high-low with Marvin Bagley was a highlight EVERY TIME he did it, it was masterful and we should've run it every single play of every single game), showed his footwork down low when fed in the paint. He ran the court well, defended well, blocked well. Even in the zone, he was terrific at the base, and he'd even play on the outside of the zone when Bolden was in, so you could see his feet moving. Everything I'm seeing him do in tweeted highlights, he did at Duke enough to make me know he could do it-- except the constant switching even to guards, but we knew he could switch, it was the other guys who couldn't, so the zone prevented him from really showing his M2M prowess against the better teams.

Teams also did begin to close in on Carter defensively (and Bagley, for that matter) when it was clear our shooters could run cold, so that led to a lot of offense where Trent and Allen were running the show, when really they should've kept finding ways to dump it down low. Which was unfortunate. But there were also games in which he'd singlehandedly dominate-- the reason we lost to Kansas in OT was because he fouled out on some bullshit, because they had NO answer for him down the stretch of that game. He was throwing Duke onto his back.

I also just don't think the "he deferred a lot" narrative should apply as much to young big men who play in the post, tbh. It's a lot more telling when guards and wings defer or disappear. Sometimes big men just aren't being fed the ball enough. Plus I don't really ever fault Wendell for kicking it back out of the post when fed if he didn't like his matchup or saw an open man on the perimeter.

Or, to put it another way, people blamed Grayson for disappearing and Trevon for disappearing this season, but I never once heard a Duke fan bitch about Carter not trying to make a difference out there.

one of them joints was a Kevin Love Hadouken across the court that went right into a dunk. what was ill about it was that I was sure dude was walking the ball up the court (the Pacers were too)

another one was an ill pass to the corner for the open man to get the 3 when I swear dude was going to the hoop. Low-key Steve Nash-like there

looks like Dung can at least find his man in space easily after drawing attention, so he ain't just a shooter

And whenever he wasn't jacking up awful shots, he showed incredible PG technique.

It's just his ability to consistently do that instead of trying to carry the load himself.

The more he tries to hit his men with passes instead of trying to toss up 40 footers? The higher his ceiling will get.

Locking down defensively with effort and communication, running the offense to get good looks at 3 or in the paint...just running teams off the floor.

Lebron was there as well today...big hug for BI and Josh Hart. Dude was on the sidelines shouting player tendencies and reviewing the box score, I love this dude.

he isn't great at finishing or in ISO (thank God).
what he is good at is not hogging the ball, taking his shots where he can, and deferring to the hot hand when it's time. all at a blinding speed. getting a decent number of assists to shut out the dum-dums.

I think he's more of a PG than that "combo guard" tag he got based on his college play where he had no choice but to take the game over.

really like what he's doing with Preston, Lee, and Artis out there. Of those I expect Preston and Lee to become "Full Cavs". man, I wish somehow Scoochie could get on the roster. dude is pretty nice. hope he can hold on until Hill comes out of the rotation.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Hart and Svi were dead out there. Props to the Blazers...that was basically their bench unit out there playing but undefeated in SL is a good accomplishment nonetheless.
