There's real stakes and Iran's keeping it together against Silviscoesta.

Anything less than a win is probably disastrous for La Roja. Wonder if that pressure will lead to some desperation-induced mistakes.

Iran's striker puts it just a couple inches left of goal, then Spain gets possession and remembers Diego Costa plays for them.

I guess it's not over yet, but it is.

1. Greatest number of points obtained in all group matches.
2. Goal difference in all group matches.
3. Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
(If teams are still tied based on the above criteria)
4. Greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned.
5. Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned.
6. Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned.
7. Greatest number of points obtained in the fair play conduct of the teams based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches as follows:
yellow card (minus 1 point), indirect red card as a result of a second yellow card (minus three points), direct red card (minus four points), yellow card and direct red card (minus five points). Only one of the above deductions shall be applied to a player in a single match.
8. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organizing Committee

Iran-Portugal could be really intriguing, although considering their past play, it could also be the most boring game of the year. It'll be tense though!

And then they go back to meandering. In that run before the goal, Mbappe made that run....50-60 yards where he sprints by the defender, and then you see Pogba, Giroud and one other forward streaking toward the goal....like that shit was scary....

but I think their mercurial nature is going to bite them in the ass.

they have the feel of a team that has been building momentum over a few tournaments, and are ready to turn things loose. Of course in a WC you can always lose no matter how smart you play, but they are gonna be a handful in the knockouts

FOH Argentina and your fake ass midget
been seeing commentary that Nigeria NT has split personality
they'll either come out ripping heads off like the second half today
or be meek and humble like against Croatia

I'm gonna need them to invoke the power of the Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo deities and Allah and Jesus so they can put Argentina out of their misery

When black player wearing your uniforms was a scandal. Not sure am African team will ever go far when 50% of the key players on teams like Belgium are 1st generation Africans.

Mind you their views have note really evolved, just more pragmatic.

Way of the world sadly, and my glass house has plenty of cracks.

All this to say fuck Luis Suarez cuz 2010 Ghana might have been the last semi final opportunity

European based Algerians/Tunisiand playinh for native country vs France. I would say that's just pragmatic decisions based on liklihood of playing time.

Although it would have been nice if blanc's racist rants about immigrant players while head coach of France would have had a greater impact on this generation

That’s probably the main reason (and Morocco is in that list too btw), but there’s surely also a very strong attachment of these players to their parents’ (or earlier) home country. Possibly in part because of how shabbily France has treated its minorities tbh

Not sure what you’re getting at here. Blanc should’ve been fired and faced little consequences for what he said (whereas others in the infamous meeting got canned), but IMO the biggest disappointment from the whole thing is that no real measures were taken to increase opportunities and diversity in the top ranks of French football. The grassroots levels seem more open and caring for kids from all backgrounds, from what I’ve read, but the federal structure could definitely use way less of a good ole boy mentality

it's the same all over the world. I was in France the two weeks before the tournament and the tie-in marketing was wild, literally every ad was futbol-related (bought a bag of special edition M&Ms with just blue, white and reds haha).
At least these dudes are entertaining, I tried 2mins of Uruguay/Egypt on Fox then remembered why I stuck to Telemundo all through Brazil '14

Durmaz blunder gave them an excuse to be rasists on social media. He received death threats both against him, his family and children. Really fucked up. The coach, Durmaz and the hole team made a statement today before training started. They ended it with the whole team saying "fuck rasists!".

In response to Reply # 209

fair play to Germany, they really dug deep to get it (with a nice assist from Durmaz, guess there's a reason why he's still at Toulouse and not a bigger club). A bit surprised how much space Sweden gave Kimmich, and I'd be interested to see what happens if he faces actual opposition.
The Mannschaft still has a grip of issues that will flare up if they make it to the next round, although at least now I guess they can at least find a plan B for their backline without feeling too bad. Kroos was much better in this game I thought, and overall it's not like this squad is a rusty car that will break down, someone will have to take them down

213. "The Gomez move @ the half was critical"
In response to Reply # 212

Gomez hasn't been in form but he's the only 9 we really have. Sweden's plan was to park the bus and it's really difficult to pick that apart with hybrid 9 like Werner who can't take up that space in the middle of the box.

Once Gomez came on, Sweden's CBs had to play narrow to account for him and Werner had tons of space on the left. Sweden adjusted about midway through and then Kimmich became the outlet on the right side.

I really hope Draxler has his role reduced because his link-up has been poor and he hasn't been incisive at all...the impact that Werner and Brandt make out wide makes his poor performance all the more salient.

Obviously I hope we get through to the elimination stages but I haven't seen a German team this sloppy and leaky at the back in a long time. The CBs are making so many poor risk/reward choices (headlined by Boateng obv, should't see another minute) and it's compounded by the midfield...when Kroos makes that type of mistake, you can't help but think it's one of those games.

They draw w/ Mexico in the 3rd leg - they're gone.

Germany's Cup was saved by one of the most timely, epic goals you could ask for. They were clearly the superior team - deserved the W.

Nothing like the Cup du Monde.

trust me I never say anything positive about ze Mannschaft unless I absolutely have to, but they did not steal that result. Durmaz is still a dumbass tho, and really Sweden had a very manageable counter right before that could’ve had them go up 2-1

I'm not sure they even had a midfield out there today.

All around dominant performance by Colombia.

Tough result for Senegal, but their defense never looked as strong as their attack.
