"Old Man Basketball Diaries: The un-retirement of the semi-retirement"
Fri Jun-08-18 02:10 PM by auragin_boi

I haven't hooped since April 2017 (injury...sever bone bruise sat me down for 3 months almost, then life the rest of the way after that).

I'm going to hoop tomorrow for the first time in a little over 13 months.

...
...
...
Pray for me y'all lol

I've probably gained a smooth 15-20lbs. Dropped about 7 of that swimming for the last 2 weeks.

If I make it out of this without a sprained ankle, pulled hammy or calf strain, it'll be mission accomplished.

I fully expect my game to be hot garbage and my lungs to be on fire.

LOL

As long as I don't die...Basketball Gods, please don't let me die! lol

I am starting the trek myself after a long layoff. I gained 20lbs recently (wife had our son) so now that I can get more than 5 hours sleep (LOL) back to the court I go. Plus a new rec center opened up near my house so I gotta check it out.

Also, getting through pain free is my MAIN thing. I suffer from plantar fasciitis (worst pain you'll ever feel and worst injury to have as far as basketball is concern). I have been to 4 different doctors, cortisone shots, shoe lifts and MRI. Hopefully I can stay in one piece.

I've had strains in my feet and THAT sucked. Couldn't imagine dealing with that full time.

I'm going to stretch like an old a** man before I go out there. lol

And I'm pounding ibuprofen when I get home. If I can make it through tomorrow relatively unscathed, I think I can get back on track.

Its crazy...you take one bad step and your managing pain for almost a week. And LOL @ stretching but hey...we do what we gotta do. I'm going to put on a stretching exhibition, LOL!

Yep, I got my Motrin ready...I take it an hour or so before playing (Motrin, banana for potassium and water) before I played when I first hurt it. I am going to have to double up now...LOL!

i am having sort of a mystery issue around the ball of my left foot and big toe. at first it was a medial side discomfort at the medial side where the ball of the foot comes up the side but i thought it was just callous/blisters and i could take care of it easily. but for the last week, every other run i get a deep ache in the ball of my foot and the bottom of my big toe. sound familiar?

was when I got out of bed in the morn. the first few steps were really painful on the inside of my foot, from the arch to the heel. after several steps, the pain would go away.

I never had pain while active. it never hurt during running or while playing ball. after periods of rest is when the pain happens.

I didnt know something was wrong til it was too late. It happened so fast. One Saturday, I played ball with the fellas as normal. My feet were hurting but nothing too serious, I thought normal soreness (we would play 3 hours at a time). The next day I could BARELY walk. So its hard to say how this thing happens.

But it could also be a handful of other things based on location alone. The foot (and hand) are very distinct in your brain's homunculus so pain location can be trusted.

Just for reference, plantar fasciitis has become a garbage term for any pain on the bottom of the foot.

usually i hear it's a rear-foot issue. i remember when tim duncan and pau had it hearing some detail about it.

i worked on my foot a little basically trying to get any kind of protrusion out of the equation. i guess the pain on the bottom is totally new, not sure what's going on there. probably will stop varying shoes so much also, try to narrow down any variables.

surprisingly, my knees have been cool during this break. My back on the other hand...anytime I try to do anything not normal, back be like "uh, hol up bruh! you gonna try this without stretching me out...NAH, take this tightness with you and sityoass down!"

The swimming has helped with the back though. Now I am afraid for my knees. Not as much as I am for my hammys, ankles and calves.

I ain't touching a league until the fall. I need to feel like I have game again before I try anything organized.

at my gym but its MWF at 10AM, i am not checking for that. it's nice to play against older guys when you can though, there were some cuchos in colombia with an afternoon game that i always liked playing with because they were slower and more willing passers (though some of them were surprisingly immature lol).

i play against younger guys mostly now, anywhere from 16 to 25. sometimes i even work with them a little on their game, i got one kid (HS senior) to improve his shot dramatically with some simple pointers. another kid i worked with in colombia is playing professionally now though i had a very small part in his success. we still talk from afar and review stuff. there is a guy at our gym who is definitely going to play college ball but he doesn't need my help. in the past three months he has improved by leaps and bounds, really transitioning from a 5 to a 3 nicely to make the jump to the next level. once in a while i will give him a tip but mostly i get him the ball, i wouldn't be surprised to see him starting for a mid major in 2-3 years (HS junior now).

For various reasons. One moved, one’s wife just had a baby, one works evening now, etc. We’d been playing regularly for 3-4 years every year in the fall and spring. We can’t get enough to show up anymore and haven’t played since last fall. I’m feeling good and just itching to play too!

Might have to find a league to join. But our run really was perfect : mostly decent to good players who know how to play, everybody playing hard enough to get a good run in but not getting carried away with it, etc.

I can’t go back to showing up to gyms and just picking up teams. Too many clowns who think they’re Russell Westbrook just pounding that rock and jacking stupid shots, or clowns arguing about the score. I got no time for any of that anymore.

I'd been playing with the same group of regulars at the same Y on the same day at the same time for about 13 yrs. Then a few guys fell off, then a few more until we'd have 6-7 and no options for a full run.

Had to find a different spot at a church not too far away. Some of the old regulars pop in there on occasion but again, I haven't hooped since last April.

Losing my normal run probably helped egg it on.

Mid-late 20’s I didn’t ever really play consistently in those years.

But I was playing almost as well as I ever had the last couple years. Better diet, consistent workouts, zero injuries, consistently playing....I was doing my best to stave off aging and was playing almost like I did In my early 20’s. Was even going by people and getting to the basket and finishing in traffic once I’d been playing for a month or two....stuff I hadn’t done in years. Clock is ticking. I don’t want to lose a step (or many)by the time I find another good run, because once I do it’s probably permanent spot up shooter time for me.

I was like, "I lost a whole damn year". My original intent was to hang up my sneaks at 50. So I'm going to stick to that but losing a year...a whole year...made me feel like I'm running out of time.

I will never take that much time off again if it isn't injury related...at least until my self proclaimed retirement age of 50.

I don't think I'd gone a month without hooping since I was in middle school if it wasn't injury related (knee surgery knocked me down 6 months 10 yrs ago).

The last few months. My new place is a couple of blocks from a park and outdoor court.

Early Saturdays I go out and shoot. Jumper still ok. But I really have no interest in playing. I've had this Achilles tear fear for years and now that I'm 40 I'm Very cautious.

That said I did get pulled into a 3/3 half court game and did decent. Might start dinner yes more often.

Sad

Played for about two hours. Almost straight through (sat one game).

Teams I was on went 2-3. I was like 2 for 8 on shots over that time. Shot 3 airballs (two 3's and a long J) and realized jumper is gonna need some work. They lined up well but were about a foot short lol

2 buckets were layups. Played decent D but admittedly I looked for the easiest matchup each game. Still played good team D. Got various steals, blocked a shot. Got a few assist but my strength was rebounding. Led the team there.

Set some good screens too. In short, I wasn't the worst dude on the court due to bball IQ. If I had my offensive game though I think we would have won 4-5 games instead of 2.

No injuries, back was a little tight but nothing I couldn't deal with. Not particularly sore either. Little drained but I'm chilling today outside of maybe some swimming.

Good to be back!

No judgement, though, since I got winded shooting for 20 minutes this morning. Granted, it was humid as shit, i was hungover, and i ate shoo fly pie for breakfast, but still.

The fact that I could take 13 months off and play with guys aged 21-48 and still hold my own...not being the worst guy on the court, being some leg strength, conditioning and jumper away from having great impact...AND I didn't get hurt...W all day. hahahaha

I was a little sore yesterday though. Had to take it a bit easy. Was still mobile but I wasn't doing nothing to strenuous.

when i first came out i couldnt hit anything outside 15 feet. i started dead lifting and shooting 50 threes a day (sometimes 100) and now my stroke has improved dramatically. my release is never going to be fast but i can catch and shoot decent and if you let me spot up then you better cue mike breen.

Legs and core and I need to get up some shots.

I haven't shot on a real hoop the entire time I was out. Like there was NO basketball. I dribbled on occasion but nothing else.

But I'm with you on what I need to do.

Glad you're still in one piece. I got the days mixed up and the 30+ night is Monday night so I am playing tonight. I went up there yesterday and shot around. My brother in law is in a league and wants me to play on Thursday nights so I am thinking of that too. Just gotta pace myself.

i gave up static stretching and just do light warmups, my calves always get tight and i drink a lot of water between games, i have a pretty good verticle which i have to use at times to get boards, since im only 5'8, but that takes alot out of me, i try not to put effort into jumping if i dont have to, i will eventually cramp if i jump too much, ill stretch it out for a bit anf i might be good to go for another 5 min or so

In response to Reply # 13

Adidas uses a lot of what I call "decorative Boost" and especially in their bball models like the Hardens and Crazy Explosives. It looks to be a certain volume but if you bust the shoe open you'll see it's less than half of what the midsole appears to be. You can feel it where your foot sides, well below where the Boost comes up ostensibly.

Harden 1 was just a great shoe because it was exceptionally supportive for a low top, had functional (not so much plush) cushioning and had good materials. The two is kinda nice but not crazy about the material setup. Waiting to see if they do a primeknit version eventually.

I hope your cramps get better, have you tried taking a magnesium supplement? That will help you. Just water may not be enough, boost your mineral intake, especially magnesium. I used to get this weird sort of soft spot in my left calf and taking SloMag, Magox or other high quality magnesium supplements got rid of it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Had a good run of not getting hurt or nicked up for a few months-- then caught a left ring finger sprain, a black eye, and a TMJ sprain in the span of the last month. Irritating, but I'm counting my blessings that I've yet to pick up some foot/ankle/knee issues in a long time.

I stopped playing for a long time like eight years and then was kind of on and off. Lately I have been playing a lot, first at the unidad deportiva in Medellin (4-5 times a week) and now the same amount at LA Fitness back in the States. These little fast fuckers are getting a little harder to keep in front of me but I am getting back to owning the glass. Also playing 2s and 1s (which I sort of hate) has forced me to shoot threes regularly for the first time in my life (I had just a good enough long ball to make them guard me up high before). On a good day I can shoot 20 and make 15, average day more like 10, but I've got a good enough stroke to hit them in games. That's been the main thing I have worked on. As a youth player I used to play in the low post but that shit sucks in pickup games, you just get fouled every time. If I score inside it is off a put back or a weakside dive.

But yeah I am very firmly in my 30s now and warmup is so key now. I have to really work to keep my rotator cuffs loose and callouses are a constant nuisance. It's better than a lot of guys though, I see guys out there in their 20s coming off achilles and ACL stuff.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I could have probably played that much 5 yrs ago. Last year I was doing 2-3 days a week before I sat down.

Going forward it'll probably be 1-2 days and minimal back to backs. I'll just stay a little more active in between hoop days.

And yes, the speed eventually catches up. They get faster, you get slower and smarter (hopefully).

is playing with shorter guys as teammates. the always put me at center, but that's not my game. I've always been more a slasher/driver, but not a back to the basket type guy. but since I'm normally taller than a lot of them, I'm the default center. and I'm not even that tall at 6'2.

I can still jump decently and run pretty good. can touch the rim, but no more dunking after acl repair.

played in a parents vs coaches game earlier this year. had folks asking how old I was, lol. guess I'm still in decent shape.

I don't get how the fuck people don't understand that it's no fun at all to be getting hit and scratched and taking the ball up top all day in a PICKUP GAME. We are here to have fun, experiment, do exercise and the only time you should give a foul on purpose MAYBE is a game point situation.

I try to post up and you just end up getting hit, wrapped up, pushed or slapped on the hand. We have a couple guys who can do it and attract that kind of attention you're describing where I play but overall post ups are just garbage, especially 5 on 5. Same thing with driving from a set offense (transition is another story), you just end up either going into a big crowd out of control or getting hacked.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The guys I had been playing with were pretty good about not hammering people in the post or on drives when they were clearly beat, and actually trying to play defense in there without fouling.

Not perfect, but most were pretty good about it and it made the run better.

Dudes 16-26...yeah, you're right.

Mixed bag, you get decent flow.

Older guys, they know how to play it.

Me, personally, I've never understood why people clamor for contact. If I choose to drive or post up, the whole point for me is to avoid contact. If I have you beat off the dribble and I see people packing the lane, I'm: https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7vBwCb0zKYI/VsszAFlWQZI/AAAAAAAABnc/SDD-ZkNA1KE/s1600/pullupj.gif.

I dunno once in a while in a three-on-three game there is enough space and chill to play a real game. 5on5 almost no chance and of course threes count so much (1s and 2s) that they are the preferred shot anyway. Best you can hope for is some guys flashing to the bucket to create spacing and not make the rebound a foregone conclusion for the D. If I see four guys outside I will go inside, mostly looking for an offensive rebound. It astounds me how guys who are adults still dribble with their head down. There were a couple younger dudes who loved pulling threes and doing crazy drives (they were athletic but not skilled) and at one point I just stopped guarding my man completely. I revealed to him that I wanted to see if they would ever pass to him. For 10 out of the 15 points in the game I didn't guard him. He didn't touch the ball once off a pass.

all I'm saying is, I'm trying to 'avoid' the contact. I got bills to pay so me banging with someone who probably doesn't know how to play clean post defense is a lose-lose.

It's more important for me to outsmart someone than to overpower someone.

Like with your example. You got to play 4 on 5 on D, which means your team probably won, because you recognized you could outsmart guys. Limited skill doesn't preclude intelligence.

That's the best part of playing now for me. Watching a guy who's obviously more physically gifted given their age/activity vs mine and killing them with smarts. lol

So much space, in Colombia there were often so many people that we'd have to play four 4on4 halfcourt games but at this LA Fitness if there are eight people a lot of times people are too lazy to play full court (and conversely if there are like 16 people they wanna play 5on5 full-court and make people wait ... not very practical!).

4on4 full-court gives you so much space and opportunities to make plays. It's not a regulation sized court anyway so why not?

they wanna play 1's and 2's and I hit 'em with math.

1pt doubled is 2pts, 2pts doubled is 4pts...are there any 4pt shots in basketball?

You want it to be accurate, play 2's and 3's to 32 or 1's and 1.5's to 16 lol

We usually play all 1's so people shooting behind the 3 line are just shooting riskier shots. But people have gotten so good from long range, it isn't as much a detriment anymore.

Most times I hit the court is strictly to shoot around by myself. I am on a group text with some guys that play once a week. I haven't been in a while, but I should start tagging along again.

I am trying to get my vertical up, just for kicks. I've been hitting the squats and also trying to clean up my diet so I'm less anchored to the ground. Also doing some struggle plyos, aka standing backboard slap layups when I go shoot around. I wouldn't need that high of a vert to dunk. And I figure at our age, it's my last chance to try to dunk, since I never have before.

there is a white kid at our gym who is 14 and 5'8" or so, he can yam and yes i feel a little ashamed. but the reason i bring him up is that he hit the squat rack hard. when i first started playing with him he was knicking the rim, not he can dunk maybe 1/3 attempts. soon he'll be doing it in games, i also think he has some growing to do because he's got big hands/feet for his size (pause)

The only time it's fun is when guys are willing to move the ball to get good shots but if it's just one or two guards pulling up all day it is very boring and you get little exercise. There are a couple groups of guys at my gym I like playing with, we usually have 3-4 shooters and everyone is willing to work to get each other open. Some of these other dudes are really stubborn, they don't want to use screens or even entertain moving the ball inside/out. Some dudes are out there just for the "glory" of the zero people watching being impressed by their ability to hit one out of every eight bad shots they pull

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

"Ran 3 games "

For 2 weeks I just shot around but finally I ran 3 full games. I gotta say, my wind and legs surprisingly were not an issue. What the issue was having the 'live bullets' come at me. I havent played against any real defense in a WHILE so I barely could catch the ball in traffic or drive. But I made it, hit a few jumpers. Gonna keep working out and get ready for the next run.

I played for the 2nd time in 3 weeks on Saturday. MUCH better day. Muscle memory started to kick in. I actually hit a bulk of my jumpers (NO AIRBALLS LOL), played much better D and even imposed a bit of my will on a game.

Felt like I was getting it back. All this while playing against a team full of guys younger than 25. Was 2-3 on the day again (lost all 3 games to the >25yr olds lol) but I single-handedly almost won one of the games against the >25yr olds.

One more month...I'm good.

Probably about 1/4 in game and 2/5 shooting around. Been nailing mad game-winners for some reason, in some cases it'll be the only bucket all game. I also have pretty good timing going to the offensive glass now, which is key in such a three-heavy game. My main problem is that I can't guard anybody in space. I can handle the ball fine and move a little on offense but almost anyone under 30 is too damn fast for me to guard on the perimeter. If the guy can only shoot or can't shoot at all, I am fine, but if he is halfway quick and is a threat to shoot then I am screwed. Sometimes we'll talk about it and I'll either run the guy off the line or give him space behind it to pull a long one, which is a pretty low percentage shot.

I saw a couple much older dudes, both about 50, one guy was real fit still. You could see it cost him afterward but he was playing at a heavier pace than the young bols. At one point he got five steals in seven trips down the floor, mad rebounds and loose balls, too. He was not very big either. Then yesterday the full-court games dissipated kind of early so I stayed to shoot around and this older guy, nice dude, came in. We played a couple games of 21 (which I let him win) after he showed me knee. Got a knee replacement about two years ago and he is just now getting back to shooting, HORSE, etc. Big ass railroad track scars. Not looking forward to any shit like that.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I hurt it by packing some damn boxes! The fuck?? Packing and carrying roughly 30 boxes, I guess all the stress on my wrist that I never would’ve batted an eye at hurt it? Feels like tendons or ligaments on the top of the wrist. All jacked up. Can’t bend it back or forward without it hurting, range of motion is far less, can’t do a push-up without feeling like I’m getting stabbed in the wrist/forearm. Finally getting better this weekend, but it’s been like 2 weeks. Before the last couple days, just catching a pass would’ve hurt. I finally had a new run all lined up and had to tell them I couldn’t play for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile LeBron played 82 last year? Jeez.

Getting old sucks. As a 9th grader I got fouled hard while in the air and came down with my hands out to break the fall and jacked my wrist up.....I’m 100% sure I healed more quickly from that than this.

That sucks. Its amazing how the older we get, the nagging injuries occur. Heal fast as you can and get out back out there !!!

i really have to work on lateral agility though. in a five on five game i am ok but playing twos or threes is a challenge to play d for me now.

So this past Monday I ran 4 more games. I was DOOMED for failure but I did ok. Soon as I got to the gym, I look through the glass and guys are standing around. Soon as I open the door, they said 'You ready? We need one more'
Me: Of course lets go..
Now, I only stretched 10 minutes before I left the house but here I am about to run full court no sweat no nothing. But I did manage to run 4 games, score a few buckets but my defense....Its a work in progress.

As for pain, my knees were very sore but thankfully my feet held up (have plantar fasciities ) so thats a huge plus.

Happy hoopin...and stay healthy!
