"World Cup Pregaming Post: Russian to the Party"

Friendlies are starting up, team preview capsules popping up on every website, yep it does look like we are getting close to the start of Questionable World Cup I (not the one with slavery, although...).

Another sign that we're getting close is the British tabloids are already in mid-competition form, with their usual efforts to sabotage the team this time focused on Raheem Sterling.

Anyone know of a fun prediction game we could do? I would do a spreadsheets one but they are murderous to keep track of and I'll be out of commission Jun 2-14 so if there's a good online game let me know.

------------------------------
For the record, my teams:
MLB: Mets / Soccer: PSG
NCAA BB: Arizona / NCAA FB: Michigan
NBA: Spurs / NFL: Jets

I just wear these to run or on lazy Sundays, so a looser fit would be appreciated (and they're always long so sizing up hasn't worked before)

Both loosened up their "authentics" even though they aren't exactly what's worn on the pitch. The Adidas ones used to be crazy tight like two sizes down tight, now they run true to size or even a little loose. I got the Colombia kit for the Mundial, both yellow and blue, nice fit and feel to both. Nike I got the previous USA kit, the aeroswift construction makes it form-fitting for sure but it is more ample just the same (measures wider in the chest and waist than previous kits).

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

it never really made sense, the flag has royal blue. the alternate kit is nice, too, but a little weird, the "solar red" or whatever looks orange. seems more like a training shirt but same basic design as the home so i got it anyway. i like the way the new authentics fit for sure.

31. "sane left out of germany squad."
In response to Reply # 0

wow. germany is stacked, but there has to be room for sane. i'm not as familiar with bundesliga, so i guess ... just surprised.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/04/germany-leroy-sane-world-cup-squad

Manchester City winger Leroy Sané has been omitted from Germany’s final 23-man World Cup squad, the German federation has confirmed on its Twitter account.

Sané, who won the PFA young player of year award after helping City to the Premier League title, missed out to Julian Brandt of Bayer Leverkusen, while manager Joachim Löw also opted to cut Bernd Leno, Jonathan Tah and Nils Petersen from his squad.

“There are certainly better days in the life of a national coach than when you must send four great players home who would have deserved to be at a World Cup,” Löw said at the team’s training camp in South Tyrol, Italy.

“You have to look at the big picture so we have a variable and well-balanced team prepared for all eventualities. We have good players on the wing in Thomas Müller and Marco Reus. Julian Draxler played a good Confed Cup, and made progress there. It was a tight race between Leroy Sané and Julian Brandt. Both have big qualities, both are good in the one-on-one duels.

“Julian Brandt was at the Confed Cup, had some strong games there, and put in good shifts in the training camp too. Leroy Sane is a huge talent, no doubt, and he will be back with the team in September.”

Sane has so far won 12 caps for Germany, but he has yet to find the back of the net for his national team. He has also only set up one goal.

“Maybe he has not fully arrived in the national team games. Maybe that tipped the balance,” said Löw.

“He did a good job against Austria, tried to work in defence, went into the transition play. No blame here. And his behaviour off the pitch was good as well.”

There were places for Sané’s City team-mate Ilkay Gündogan, Arsenal’s Mesut Özil and Chelsea’s Antonio Rüdiger, as well as goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has been appointed team captain despite his long recovering from injury. Germany begin their World Cup finals campaign against Mexico on 17 June and also face Sweden and South Korea in Group F.

Germany squad

Goalkeepers: Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain)

Defenders: Mats Hummels (Bayern Munich), Jérôme Boateng (Bayern Munich), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Jonas Hector (Cologne), Antonio Rüdiger (Chelsea), Niklas Süle (Bayern Munich), Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Moenchengladbach)

Midfielders: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Sami Khedira (Juventus), Mesut Özil (Arsenal), Julian Draxler (Paris Saint-Germain), Ilkay Gündogan (Manchester City), Leon Goretzka (Schalke), Sebastian Rudy (Bayern Munich), Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen)

Forwards: Mario Gómez (Stuttgart), Timo Werner (Leipzig).

No Chicago is a little surprising, as is Edmonton instead of Vancouver for western Canada. Maybe they didn't want something that close to Seattle? Guess I'll be headed to Kansas City since the rest of the midwest is out. I imagine Florida is just too big to ignore, but I'd hate to be the team playing in Orlando or Miami in late June.

58. "Chicago and BC leadership said "fuck off" to FIFA"
In response to Reply # 54

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said in a statement that “FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk. The uncertainty for taxpayers, coupled with FIFA’s inflexibility and unwillingness to negotiate, were clear indications that further pursuit of the bid wasn’t in Chicago’s best interests.”

BC's Tourism Minister, Lisa Beare, released the following statement to explain why:

"The prospect of hosting the FIFA World Cup is exciting for soccer fans, and has the potential to bring significant economic and cultural benefits to British Columbia. For the past several weeks, our government has been working diligently with the United Bid Committee—consisting of Canada, the United States and Mexico—to bring the 2026 cup to Vancouver, as one of the committee's Canadian host cities.

"While we support the prospect of hosting the World Cup, we cannot agree to terms that would put British Columbians at risk of shouldering potentially huge and unpredictable costs.

"Throughout this process, we have been in regular contact with the bid committee and other levels of government to support this bid, while protecting taxpayers. Through these conversations and our submissions to the bid committee, we have made numerous attempts to clarify the risks and obligations faced by British Columbians.

"So far, the bid committee has rejected our requests to clarify how much British Columbians could be expected to contribute. And they have declined to negotiate with the province regarding the concerns we raised.

"Should the bid committee reconsider, our door remains open to bringing some of the 2026 World Cup games to Vancouver."

Edmonton probably has our best stadium for hosting World Cup level games, something Vancouver probably doesn't and may not have been interested in building. I'm interested in Toronto actually appearing on the list for me, the city makes sense but that means there has to be some commitment in there to build something (or really expanding/upgrading BMO field) for it here which would be awesome but still feels unlikely, 8 years for a building project here that isn't a condo is no guarantee.

Aim is 40K seats (currently seats 30K), mainly achieved by closing the bowl and rounding the edges. Doesn't have to be a huge stadium; for example, Kaliningrad, which hosts 4 games including Belgium/England, only seats 32K.
