"OKPW: Greatest Royal Rumble"
Wed Apr-25-18 09:46 AM by pretentious username

Weird name for an event that will likely be the 3rd best Rumble of 2018.

I updated the sheet so that the names on the left will track with your picks and I updated most categories with a drop-down menu. I expect this will make it easier to fill out on mobile devices, but if it makes it more difficult let me know. There's also always the option of messaging me your picks if you have a problem. Also, no prize guaranteed this year! Maybe there will be, but probably not. Last year's prize was a "cleaning out the house" kinda thing, so for now this is just for bragging rights.

Just like last year: all championship match predictions are who leaves with the title, not necessarily the winner of the match. If the challenger wins the match with a count-out/DQ/some other tomfoolery but doesn't take the title it does NOT count as a win on the sheet.

Get your picks in early, they lock at noon on Friday. If anyone new wants to join add your name under Y2Flound and go from there. Let me know if you have any questions.

Card is on July 7th at the Cow Palace in San Fran

Gonna try to scoop a few of these up. Would be my second NJPW show this year, these West Coast trips is killin a brotha but the one good thing is it really made me want to move out there after experiencing it the first time.

It was already bad before then but I kept tabs on it and kept flipping the channel. That moment though, that was it for me.

I'm back on these picks!

I won't see the show until Saturday night maybe. I assume it will be fun. And they have to do something to make it seem major so they'll be some title changes. I do NOT think Roman winning will be one of them.

Got in and went hard until everything is more than caught up. The job owes me this. I'm even locking the office door so I can project this on the big screen. Shame its no other wrestling fans to share this with. Bout to go grab some hot wings in a minute before it starts.

if there's one knock on ladder matches it's that 90% of them end the same way. Never seen anything like that Rollins spot. I liked Balor being too dumbfounded to react properly.

What a waste of time this whole thing is.

If they do this every year they really need to try harder to fit it into the existing storylines.

WWE even had a poll on it a few weeks ago. I can see Nak going for that nut shot and it not working then AJ pulling the cup out.

If I were booking this I'd have Nak win the title and hold onto it until Summer Slam where they can have a blow off match, but we all know what kinda fuckery can go down in the WWE. I have a strange feeling AJ will retain.

But if that's the route they go than that likely means AJ wins in which case why would this feud even continue.

The feud has to end if AJ wins again, especially clean after he pulls the cup trick.

Can they make that go until Summerslam to bust that out?

Makes perfect sense to me to have Nak win, but I can't see them pulling the cup trick and still having AJ lose. Unless some sort of faction or partnership with Nak forms and someone interferes. Unless they save the cup part for Summer Slam which may be even better given its one of their major 5 shows of the year and it would get an insane pop.

I'm kinda worried about Joe vs. Reigns also. Reigns needs this win more than Joe which is crazy. He's lost to Brock a ton of times now, if he loses to Joe he'll be so damn cold they might as well just cancel his push all together. Joe loses this he can still go after something like the US title if Jeff retains. I hate to say this, but Roman really needs to win this one to stay in the game or it'll truly be Bruan's turn as "the guy", which should have happened already if you ask me.

insists on "one more match" with Brock since Joe is "out of commission," wins the title and then ducks Joe all year until Survivor Series or the Rumble.

Bet they'll have Roman main event this again which is such a shitty move. And they wonder why everyone hates him.

Disrespectful as shit to AJ to be honest. Man has been one hell of a champ and one of the most over people in the company and he's the third to last match because Roman just has to main event.

This is so frustrating.

That section is a little more than left in other sections, but yeah no one was feeling it even though they liked Joe. Didn't help that the match was slow. This just shouldn't happen during main events.

So much fun. Rollins/Miz was match of the night. Pretty mediocre event overall. Another non-finish on AJ/Shinsuke was really frustrating and I think they're making the same mistake with Roman that they did with Cena after his loss to the Rock. Roman needs to lose some more before we can turn the story around and Samoa Joe is a perfect candidate to beat him but Vince doesn't see it that way I guess.

Super heel champ Lashley in TNA worked...not masterful, but it worked. This thing last night wasn't even his fault IMO...it was just bad to the point of being awkward and bizarre, the concept the execution...everything. Unless it leads to a squeaky clean Lashley that suddenly turns savage, this is doomed to die quickly.

It would be to their advantage to have a smiling nice Bobby that flashes back and snaps, then switches to normal nice smiling guy. Somewhat like a serial killer. Something happens in the match that flips his switch. He gets tied up in the ropes or some shit just like his siblings tied him up in the woods and dude just loses his fucking mind and gives someone a savage beatdown to the point that the crowd gets a bit uncomfortable. Maybe have the locker room clear out to pull him off and him get up and act like nothing happened.

Tried to do it on my phone and that shit was not happening at all, at least I have tickets for the G1.

What really helped these guys is they're also having a huge convention with a lot of stars from the past as well as present, then what is sure to be an awesome wrestling card. It helps with this being held in the mid west, cheaper tickets for people flying in from the east. My biggest issue with NJPW is its always on the west coast and I'm paying so much for the flight. Honestly if I would have gotten these I probably would have sold my G1 ticket.

Happy for all these guys for showing that it can be done, and so quickly. Best thing it can do is open people up to things other than the WWE.

In response to Reply # 99

Nia ain't great in the ring, so I do feel like this would be a better match up than someone like Charlotte or Asuka. I want to see her face the best after she has some matches under her belt. I would have preferred this match take place before or after Nia loses her title though. Ronda should not be getting a shot this fast she's only had one match.

I'd have her run through Mickie and Bliss maybe, maybe have Nattie do a turn on her and Ronda win their match. Nia is in the whole anti bully thing now, not sure how this match really fits where they're going with that.

Catch her off guard with a couple of choice right hands, and just mash her into the mat. Then you can build her to WM having learned from her overconfidence in both sports, adding moves and capabilities. But they're dead set on running Charlotte and Ronda at each other in New York that it's not gonna happen.

And to be honest by that time Ronda should have built up enough to challenge for the title there. She needs more appearances though and not just on PPVs. They let everyone else face random jobbers, why not her? I think she needs some matches under he belt and she does need that "one" loss that is a wake up call that makes her even more vicious in the ring. That loss could be Nia also, but she should have at least a few matches on her record first. You can't just throw her Nia now we only seen Ronda at the last Wrestlemaina and that was a mixed tag match.

Ronda - Charlotte and Ronda - Asuka are the biggest two matches out there IMO. Ronda’s gotta go through some others along the way first.

Nia’s already lost a bunch of matches in the previous couple years before her recent title push but has recently gotten some of that credibility back with her title push, so to me she’s perfect as an early obstacle for Ronda.

I always thought the Fall was the bigggest downtime but this might take the cake. The Raw and Smackdown after Mania gave me a lot of hope that they were trying some new shit, but now it just seems they're hoping MITB floats them until Summerslam time.

A bit disappointed in what they've done with the NXT callups so far. Ember just keeps buddying up with other faces and not getting much shine and I'm so far underwhelmed with the AOP debut. No Way Jose... well I guess he's exactly where I thought he'd be. The IIconics are the only thing kinda working right now.

Have the other champ defend all the time! I'll never be mad about a weekly open challenge segment, least of all when one of the company's workhorses is running it. Not enough to save an entire 3-hour show but it does help.

But holy shit at least be there!

Have the man in some non title matches.

Okada has had his title for years now, know why its not as bad as Brock? (Other than the man can wrestle his ass off) its because we still see him! Dude is in tag matches and it builds towards his title defenses. It's totally believable you'll see the ace of your company on the regular but the title defenses are kept to special occasions.

Such a talented roster and half the time it feels like they don't even know what to do with them.

In response to Reply # 117

Smackdown is not immune to this, but the problem is more glaring on Raw: not many wrestlers have a goal and the main title being around would clear that up a lot. Even when the wrestlers in question don't get to that goal right away or are thwarted later it's still SOMETHING to shoot for.

Which scenario is more interesting?

A) Champ goes out there and starts talking some shit. Wrestler A comes out saying he's after the title. Wrestler B comes out saying HE'S the next champ. Then Wrestlers A and B fight over it.

B) Wrestler A talks to Kurt Angle. Wrestler B interrupts. Then Angle puts them in a match.

Sure scenario A gets stale sometimes but there are different versions of it you can run with and scenario B is BEYOND stale.

121. "What is wrong with the WWE IMO"
In response to Reply # 0

Most of us agree that WWE Kreative has been anything but for the past who knows how long. Terrible booking and silly storylines have been a constant for ages...but I think there is another reason that I can barely make it through a RAW or SD show...the matches are wrestle-by-numbers and all the talent do all the same moves.

It used to be that besides basic holds, each wrestler had a few moves hat were their own, especually finishers. Now everyone does superkicks, "suicide dives" over or between the ropes, and top turnbuckle climbs. Everyone does the same moves, just giving them different names to fit their gimmick. And the most obvious one (at least for me), You can predict every move in order for just about every guy there.

Add to that the fact that the production telegraphs the matches as well. Every time the camera does a close-up on a guy, be sure that a run-in or a counter is coming, and in six man matches, the match doesn't end until every person involved does their finisher with the last man standing getting the pin.

I think this combo is the reason I like AJ so much...no one else does the calf crusher or the Styles Clash, or a couple of other moves that he uses, and he puts them together in a manner that seems fluid to me. He's a breath of fresh air in the staleness of typical WWE fare.

Am I nuts? Cynical? Just plain wrong?

As a performer I don't get why you'd want to do things so many other people do. Superkicks are crazy over-used, the dive through the ropes, those enziguris on the ring aprons (everyone does those!).

Something else about the day-to-day watching of the product that can really irk me at times is the commentary. They just recycle set phrases like "These two know each other so well", "Well scouted", "Mind games being played", "You can't win the title on the outside"... It can really be very irritating at times.

in the “big” matches at PPV’s, the way they all kick out of each other’s finishers, and have so many near falls and false finishes....that really mentally takes me out of any match that I’ve managed to stay into. It feels like a misguided attempt to have an “epic” match every time now.

And yeah, the production is actually awful for watching/enjoying the matches. All the closeups and camera switches are disorienting.

I find that when even I do watch, I start messing with my phone and check out of like 95% of the matches. I’m close to being completely done with it, I think.

In theory the production should be presenting it as a real sport (which new japan does perfectly btw) and this completely goes against that. Most of the moves look more impressive in the wide shot anyway, especially high spots.

RE: run-ins... the crowd usually reacts 5 seconds before so it makes no sense why they never catch a run-in before it happened.

>Am I nuts? Cynical? Just plain wrong?

No, the suicide dive has been dead for me for a while and a high spot has to be extra special to impress me these days. I agree with the scripting of the matches. Not to keep smarking out here, but this is another thing NJPW does better. Different company with different goals tbf, but their lack of predictability is worth noting. Okada's been champ for 2 years and I'm still on the edge of my seat every title match.

The switching cameras for every punch, every kick, and every move is supposed to make the moves seem more real, but it really shows how bad some of these guys are at selling, but they don't see it that way. You're right, New Japan lays it out like a real sports event, and it comes off much better.

I agree. The title matches aren't so contrived, so they come off as realistic. One contender falls, the "next in line" steps up to challenge, not Rousey getting title shots after a couple of appearances, shitting on the entire roster that busts their ass for the company. hen Jericho showed up NJPW, he has the resume to fight anyone, but they put him against Omega...a big match that doesn't cheapen the title.

Another thing that helps New Japan areb the factions. Having LIJ, Chaos, Bullet Club, Suzuki-Gun, etc gives the opportunity to have battles between smaller groups that make sense, instead of the WWE option of mish-mashing all the faces together and all the heels together in matches against each other that make no sense.

i recommend it over going to Raw or Smackdown. No sitting through backstage segments or bad "this is your life" retreads. Just wrestling, and they typically go all out.

It can very easily change the way you 'assess' how good-looking lots of the ladies are. I went to a TLC years ago, saw the Bellas and made a decision to never sleep on them again.

Dominion is on the 9th and it'll be their 4th match.

This is the second, its a long match but worth every minute. I'm interested in who's gonna take the 4th. I want to say Kenny but Okada has been unstoppable so far and every time I think he's going to finally lose he pulls a win out. Anyway, to me this is the best of their 3 matches.

I think Kenny takes it this time (yeah I've said that before) but I've also been convinced that Naito was the long-term plan for a year now and I wouldn't blame them for going that route.

Kenny Omega is your new IWGP Heavyweight Champion

Chris Jericho wins the Intercontinental Championship

Young Bucks win Heavyweight Tag titles

Mike Elgan wins NEVER Openweight title

Takahashi wins IWGP Junior Heavyweight championship

Non Japanese hold most of the titles now which is wild. I honestly hope Kenny keeps this for awhile.

This thing lived up to every bit of the hype that was behind it.

I don't wanna hear anyone bitching about WWE matches when they don't watch alternatives like this. This is fucking wrestling right here. Been up since 3am and I'm still too hype to sleep after this. Both of these guys went over an hour and delivered.

Okada's reign was legendary and Kenny defeating him in this fashion is more important than the title itself. Whoever was set to defeat him would become a pro wrestling God. Do yourselves a favor and watch this match.

Seems like this is all to make a play at the international market. Surprised they're still high on Elgin tbh but the other results are fine by me. Jericho is looking chunky and winded though. Was he like that at Greatest Royal Rumble or is that just his diet the last month and a half?

The drama of the main event is really something. The near falls these 2 pull off are a thing of beauty. I know people tend to get hyperbolic when these 2 fight, but it really is theater. There are a handful of wrestlers who have a claim for being the best today and their case is stronger than everyone else's. My favorite match between them is still the time limit draw I think, but each of them is nearly perfect.

it's the last time either of them are fighting in the ufc. i hated seeing it. punk looked horrible, it spoke worse for the ufc for letting him fight than for punk doing it. i get it, he's got a dream, he worked hard, he sells tickets. but there's a line that the ufc has to draw before they start replicating some of the old japan circus show cards.

actually to show that you need to be more than tough...that not anyone can do this sport. it would have worked if you had more of a physical specimen (a younger james toney/herschel walker)...but punk isn't phsyically intimidating anyone.

That match was ridiculously good and physical. Dream is awesome as hell. I hope they don’t Tyler Breeze him too much. Aka he’s gotta pull some wins out to pull off all of this great character work and rock solid rasslin.

(lord willing) he's gonna be around for a very long time and as long as part of the story is "he's so talented for a young guy" then he can lose a lot along the way if he's always putting on good showings. there will be a limit to it, but for now i'm fine with his booking.

But I will say that there’s no excuse for the main roster if NXT can start with a tag match that fucking hot and go right into Dream/Ric.

Also, that smile on Nikki Cross’s face right before she dropped out 😻😻😻

Man, these nxt shows are great to attend. You know you’re not getting hit a 5-hour thing so you don’t have to pace yourself so much during the show. Aka you can scream like a jackass anytime you see something cool. And it’s a fun watch as well. I can’t think of one Takeover I didn’t like. And there’s always some gold on there.

Johnny and Psycho Killer...this is some feud of a lifetime shit here. There storytelling is almost too on the nose at times but these matches are so damn good that it doesn’t matter. Every dude on the roster worthy a damn is wishing for a shot to get a program like that in wwe. You think Sami would like it over feuding with Lashley and selling a delayed vertical suplex like it’s a burning hammer?

My only issue with the match is the whereabouts of the ref between Ciampa getting on the stretcher and Gargano bringing him to the ring. He never rang the bell after Ciampa got on the stretcher, so where the fuck did he go? Did I miss a ref bump in the midst of Gargano punching the hell out of random road agents?

There is no spot on this card they could put this match where that chant wouldn't happen.

If they put it on before they opened the arena as a pre recorded match I have no doubt that one of the janitors would start the chant.

I have no idea why Asuka would be "shook" by Ellsworth in her, when the much more obvious move (Iiconic shenanigans) was right there.

And I can't call it, but I feel like Strowman with the briefcase doesn't really do anything for Braun. He absolutely should be regularly fighting for the title, but if one F5 is enough to put him down, then great, he looks a little weaker for needing the case. There was more they could do with just about anyone else that got the case.

The Nia/Rousey match was pretty great, and Bliss with the Rollins-style cash-in (hoss Samoan and MMA ace, interrupted by Hoss Samoan's former buddy) worked wonders.

Big Cass tapping out to Bryan? Fine, but I've seen it.

Roman/Jinder? That's a Raw match and nothing you can do to dress it up makes it a PPV match. Plus Chicago was always gonna boo this out of the building.

Lashley/Zayn? Didn't even bother watching.

These would all be fine if the card wasn't 4 and a quarter hours.

I was fine with the Asuka booking (although it should take more than a superkick to put her down), but Braun doesn't need the briefcase and there were a lot of guys in the match who would've made a lot more sense as winners.

When did this match even take place? I legit thought they dropped it off the card last night and I sat there the whole time (was doing other shit though).

That's crazy that I could just forget about a match that quick. There were only a few interesting things on this card. Holy shit this needs to be cleaned up quickly. You always go from a clean Takeover to a sloppy main roster ppv.

Their philosophy is to get everyone on the card. Duel-branded PPVs were the opportunity for them to go the quality-over-quantity route and even save matches for later PPVs. Instead, we get several matches with zero-or-less heat every PPV with absolutely no stakes that we surely have either already seen or will see a rematch of on TV the next night or next week.

Ronda killed it again, she sells VERY well. But eventually she's going to be in the ring with women she's superior to (in kayfabe) and will need to be able to carry a match offensively.

Undercard matches like Bryan/Cass and Seth/Elias exceeded my expectations.

I like Braun as the MITB holder. My hope is that he straight up challenges Brock on some "I don't need to sneak attack or wait for the perfect time, I can beat you straight up. See you at SummerSlam." The only problem with that is - especially when coupled with the women's MITB already being cashed in - we don't get any of the ongoing drama that comes with the MITB briefcase being out there on a week-to-week basis.

A few negative comments:
-Coach needs to be fired. He's horrendous. That whole spiel when Ronda was in a bearhug and him calling it "a good thing for Ronda" so she could get rest was embarrassing.
-As someone who hasn't watched much of the weekly TV - if any - since Mania, I appreciate the video packages, but we really don't need one for every single match.
-That women's MITB match had a horrendous collection of talent. And the women just can't do these multi-person gimmick matches.

And to a lesser extent some other women's gimmick matches.

They can't take the bumps we are accustomed to seeing, their bodies just can't do it...or at least very few of them can.

So what we had was a great match, with good spots, but there was no high spot peak like we are used to seeing in the men's match because it's not possible.

They can't get dumped off the ladder to the outside, they can't have the ladder tipped over while they're on top, can't be slammed off of it, all of the go to spots are off the table. What we were left with was climb, get pulled down, repeat. We kept expecting a big moment that never came because it's what we're accustomed to there.

The final big spot (even without the botch) was nothing more than Alexa tipping Becky off the ladder softly to the ground.

I love the women's division, but they need to find matches that fit them better than just trying to do everything the men do. There has to be some way to use those 8 women in an exciting match that doesn't involve expectations we have about big spots.

I wish they didn't feel the need to have a women's counterpart to every match the men partake in. They can be treated as equals without having a Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber or MITB match. It does nothing but expose the women's limitations and water down the novelty of those matches.

I remember one of the recent case holders using it to set up a match.

I think he's doing this as an act? That he's the aloof, "rusty" commentator. But when Cole can't keep whether Styles or Nakamura won THE MATCH THAT JUST FINISHED, it falls super flat.

>-As someone who hasn't watched much of the weekly TV - if any

With gimmick stuff, that allows them to get the match losers out of the ring, clean up any ladders, replace turnbuckles, and check the ring. It's a necessary evil that they used to cover over with much more frequent backstage interviews.

he did, he challenged Punk for the following week on Raw which I believe was the 2,000th episode, or some other milestone. He ended up winning via DQ.

I like Braun doing it because cashing in on the spot the traditional way cheapens the victory. It works great for the heel or underdog face, but with Braun they've built him up to be able to destroy everyone 1v1 (sans Brock and Roman). This is their chance to have him go over that hump.

He won it and announced he was going to cash it in at next year's Mania main event. Then he got injured

I know the risk with doing this, lack of spontaneity, chance he flames out or gets injured etc... but now that you have 2 MITB winners it would be so great to set something like that up and let it be a 9 month long story.

Charlotte winning would have been perfect for it, announce she wants to use it to be the first woman to main event Mania and we spend all year wondering against who (obviously Rousey).

Of course this takes commitment to long term storytelling so it'll never happen again.

Heel Ziggler is a good look IMO, and the alliance with Galloway/McIntyre works for me as well. I really don't like Seth in this face-esque role, so his dropping the belt is fine with me. I thought Elias was gonna get it on Sunday, but *shrug*

Honestly, I think McIntyre, Ziggler, and the Revival should become a mini-faction, a move that could help them all out a little bit. All of them are kind of dry personality-wise, but a no-nonsense faction like that could go over a little bit.

which is part of why the booking for them doesn't make sense to me. They come in kicking ass for a month or so, get eliminated quick in the tag team battle royal, and now Ziggler is back on another singles run? Plus there's the whole mess of explaining his nonsense with the US Title earlier in the year, which they haven't attempted because it's impossible.

I really don't like
>Seth in this face-esque role, so his dropping the belt is fine
>with me.

Completely disagree. They've struggled with face Seth since his return from injury but he's hit his stride in 2018. It's not just workrate either. I think his mic work has been much better than it was the previous couple years. The pop he's getting in every city is massive.

I feel the same way about this as I do Cena's US Title run. They had a hot run but the wrong guy took them down (in Cena's case it was a quick Del Rio match). I didn't need it to be Elias specifically, but someone who could use the rub would be nice and Elias is a great candidate. Ziggler will likely fart away this title within 2 months and then we'll forget all about it. It really could've been a moment too.

And the disdain for him is that he's been treated as an afterthought ever since that Survivor Series, after which WWE had him doing fuck-all. If it weren't for their hard-on for Reigns, he really could have been built into the biggest thing in the company. But it wasn't meant to be, and the weird way they handled his contract expiring with the anti-gimmick gimmick did a number on his popularity.

And in the intervening years, he's been surpassed by quite a number of performers on the roster.

the way the WWE runs i can easily see them just bleeding this elias concert gimmick dry without ever seeing if he can solidify himself as a belt holder.

he's nearing Bray Wyatt levels of Ls.

The belt will be back on Raw and these main eventers need to be available for main event feuds every month again, that's my theory.

Hell maybe Rollins will be the Summerslam match that Braun sticks his nose in.

and with how many titles they have they can also just say "ok the IC champ is getting matched up against the WWE champ this month" and that will actually simplify things for that PPV.

I've been considering that, but I'll wait till I see it. Still feels like Roman's spot unfortunately.

A big ego similar to Enzo

Shoemaker or someone said a few weeks ago he wasn't supposed to beat up the midget Daniel Bryan, they specifically told him not to and he did it anyway and they were very mad.

Add that on top of his wrestling just looking bad no matter how many moves they gave him to try and it wasn't gonna work.

Rip. He was one of the ‘big foreigners’ who turned me onto All Japan Pro wrestling. I still believe that the template for most of the epic matches over the last 20-ish years have a base in some AJPW match.

Vader was also the shit on virtual pro wrestling 2. Or fire pro. Straight critical!

Can't make it out to San Fran like I planned. For $200 you can have both. They're elevated floor seats. That's less than what I paid for them.

Hit me up if interested.

Seriously...enough is too much at this point.

Now he's fighting The Revival AND Lashley? One feud isn't enough...he needs two matches per RAW now?? Please stop with him already.

Also, the Bayley/sasha thing...a counselor???C'mon son. As many friendships that have turned sour over the years, this one deserves a counselor to mend the wounds? FOHWTBS. Just let them feud and get it over with.

Why don't I "get" No Way Jose?

Lastly, we know they like to recycle stuff, but Bryan and Kane?? My god, is there no original thought at Titan Tower??

P.S. Authors of Pain need belts immediately if not sooner.

This wasn't a bad card. Bucks came though was a great tag match and all the singles matches delivered.

My boy Juice got his first title, dude has come a long way and I'm super excited for him.

What's going on with Bullet Club?

I honestly hope this means the end of JR and Barnett on the AXS announce team. They do a horrible job and half the time are calling the wrestlers and moves by the wrong name. I love JR for what he's done in the past with WWE but he doesn't have that type of passion anymore and doesn't follow NJPW enough to put in the effort of properly calling the matches.

They need Kevin Kelly and Don Callis.
