"Poll question: How good will the Celtics be next year?"

The assumption is that they're going to be a monstrous problem and possibly become the next King of the East for several years to come. Kyrie & G. Hay are due back and joining a team that's already coalescing under the league's greatest system.

How good will they be next year?

Poll result (26 votes)
They'll win the East (9 votes)Vote
Whey'll win the Finals (1 votes)Vote
Philly Better (12 votes)Vote
Depends on where Kang goes (3 votes)Vote
I'm a Toronto fan (1 votes)Vote

sixers will have at least the two and maybe three (depending on free agency) best players, but the celtics have beastly depth and stars enough to do the job. the early 80s are back on.

Kyrie was not a great leader early in his career - and it's actually arguable whether he's a great *leader* now - as he stepped into a situation in Boston where he doesn't really need to be the leader - just a prominent piece of a super-balanced, expertly coached team.

I like Simmons and Embiid as leaders, more. However, I think Kyrie right now is the more accomplished, ready-to-win player *right now*. I am high on Kyrie because of his proven ability to play very big in big moments. He will be able to be what he's always wanted to be in Boston: a pure scorer who doesn't have to do much *but* score. And he can get buckets w/ the best of them - particularly when the pressure is on.

Simmons & Embiid have to prove they can do that in an ECF/Finals situation - but I think they can.

>and they're both at an age where they will continue to
>improve, as opposed to kyrie, who should be about to plateau.

Agreed w/ that - and Kyrie's durability is a big question.

i understand why you're confused, given that duke doesn't produce franchise players. but when you're an actual franchise player, your fans don't need to make excuses. we got two of those dudes. they get all the credit and the blame.

and covington is a made man. dude grinded and made himself into a dude worth every penny. he's straight with us forever.

or some real crazy shit like like Kawhi joins him in CLE among other roster moves happen in the offseason.

LeBron goes to Philly, it's Boston v. Philly until he retires, basically like having Houston v. The Oracle Death Star every year

we have the talent and at the times when this team has gelled they've shown they can hang with anyone and beat tough teams at home or on the road. Another year under Brown and Tatum's belt certainly will only help them. Interested to see what they do with the lineup when Hayward is back though. The rotations will take some figuring out but I trust Stevens.

this is the last year the celtics should be favored against a healthy sixers team. this was the year to knock us down, plant doubt in our minds.

but shit, even if we "only" make the conference finals this year? with Ben and Joel getting a year's better, Markelle even approaching a functional nba player, free agents, AND no previous playoff failure hanging over their head? we gonna eat em up.

In response to Reply # 8

but it's funny how - especially in the NBA - sometimes what's on paper doesn't manifest into practice. But I agree that Stevens is to be trusted in terms of how he can maximize the most out of players - and he'll now finally have a squad that is absolutely stacked with talent and workable pieces.

That said - I think people have been overestimating how easy it is to win the Eastern Conference (out of LeBron fatigue and just not being impressed by him anymore because we're so used to it).

The Celtics were a very, very dynamic team this year when Kyrie was healthy (and even when he wasn't) - but does adding Gordon to that equation put them definitively over the top? Or will his arrival thwart the growth of Tatum and Brown and cause some disruption to team chemistry?

I think they'll figure it out - but I don't know if that means they run the east without peer. I think when healthy -there are only two teams with more balanced talent: Houston and GSW.

russ and KD, shaq and penny, ralph and hakeem. three equally esteemed young cores that never won together. the hard part starts as soon as this season ends.

edit: that said, there were all-time great teams with top 10 all time players blocking those guys. the celts aren't and don't have.

shells is making it even worse with his absurd bluster. overhyped off of a 3-1 lead in the first round against the heat? lol. slow your roll.

anyway--there are two or three things we know that make this prediction game silly today:

1. Danny Ainge *will* make at least one startling move that dramatically changes what the celtics look like before the playoffs next season. I expect either a trade of Rozier for a first round pick.
2. Who the fuck knows which major player for the Cs or their rivals will be injured and miss the playoffs.

But, if we were to assume that all teams are fully healthy, it seems obvious that RIGHT TODAY, they are clearly the leaders in the clubhouse for making the finals out of the east. Because they take this year's team, add Gordon Hayward (more than any rookie can do for any other team) and have three young players who are improving rapidly as much as any other three young players on a team that should have been the #1 seed except for injuries this year. Embiid/Simmons/Fultz might* be slightly better than Tatum/Brown/Rozier, but they also don't have Kyrie + Hayward with them.

Assuming no crazy trade or other moves in the offseason, the Cs are bringing in Hayward and that'll directly replace Smart's minutes with a better player. And that's before considering whatever Danny does to upgrade the center position. Be it re-signing Greg Monroe for bench points or

*yeah, that's right--I said might. Tatum and Brown are both YOUNGER than Embiid and Simmons. Shit, Embiid's closer in age to Kyrie than Tatum by two fucking years. HOW BOUT THAT, HUH?

prime dwight howard beat lebron and went to the finals. let's see if this fraud can do it. if he can't, he's not even better than dwight, who, while nothing to sneeze at, ain't all that. people expected BIG things from dwight after his big splashy early years, too. i know i did.

lemme tell ya, the heat be ON once that honeymoon over, shells. they find new dudes to cyse and say they better than your guy and you get aggy and be like "OH NO THEY DIDN'T!"

circle of agenda life.

no excuses.

tatum's reckoning starts next round. kyrie gets a year reprieve, but he's living on borrowed time.

problem is, Embiid isn't a whole team by himself. you got a hot center, we got a hot team. that might be why the Cs went 2-1 vs. the 76ers with Embiid healthy. And the Cs are adding Hayward for next year. Who are the 76ers adding that can even come close to competing with that?

edit: oh, I see. Lebron. well, that'd be interesting. but other than that pipe dream, who?

Simmons would be third on the team today if the Celtics were healthy. And like with embiid, jaylen and Tatum are both younger than Simmons.

If they're the two best players on both teams why'd they catch Ls to the Cs this year?

i know his cheeks tightening up seeing what jaylen doing. and tatum will be WAY better next year.

and they have NO ONE to control kyrie. fultz ass will get mixed up all series...all 5 games (and i mean that).

it kills them that ben is a trash shooter. it really does.

and danny ain't gon do nothing but draft or sign some big athletes for jo jo. that ain't much. i mean, he ain't anthony davis. no reason to be scared. now, if he was anthony...whew. but, he's NOT.

and don't let danny get anthony.

Jaylen and Jayson are gonna be so good next year. Jaylen already added a shot most people thought he'd never have. Jayson with some more muscle on his drived? Sheeeeeeeeeit.

Meanwhile, Simmons is a 56% ft shooter. Ain't gonna develop a shot.

which claims that, per minute, i should prefer the players I mentioned. And that's one thing if you're gonna compare low minute to high minute players. but most of the players I listed (except for David West, but I liked including him for the lulz) are all high minutes players.

It's not Anthony Davis' extra 4 minutes on the court per game that makes him much, much better than Covington. It's that Anthony Davis is much, much better than Covington. That the statistic is Per minutes doesn't explain that garbage ass finding.

In response to Reply # 80

They are absolutely *stacked* - but with emerging talent that makes the organization look like prophetic talent assessors. And you have to be quadruple-stacked to compete with the lopsided talent that the Warriors boast.

The challenge will be in retaining all of this talent. Rozier has made a case all year that he's a starting pg caliber guy. Tatum & Brown are playing so well that Gordon will have to fit in and share minutes as opposed to being the feature. But they all seem to love being in Boston - just like the Warriors' players love being in Oakland. It seems that sacrifices will be made to keep this core intact - but there are some questions marks: Kyrie's health/durability moving forward - Gordon's fit w/ this ensemble etc...but it's a beautiful position for Kyrie -- he can come in and just score in bunches without having facilitate, rebound, or expend a ton of energy on the defensive end. He can really be a scoring specialist which is what he's best at - and what's probably best for his body as well moving forward given his questionable durability.

92. "BOS & CLE are mirror opposites re: organizational competence"
In response to Reply # 91

It's actually amazing just how adept Boston is right now in assembling teams, scouting talent, and instituting coaching excellence.

Cleveland on the other hand? Yikes. Blunder after blunder. It's prob best that they just start from scratch after this year. They should appreciate every minute of Bron pushing them into these playoffs - because I really don't think he's staying unless they can attract 2 big free agents (which is almost impossible given the current contracts on the books).

In response to Reply # 86

They didn't move for Hayward just to flip him after half a game in a Boston uniform. Stevens specifically wanted him for what he knows he can do with Hayward on the court. It's not like they took a flier on Hayward or some shit-- Hayward knows Stevens's style perfectly already and fits it beautifully.

In response to Reply # 93

He can score, sure, which makes him that much more dangerous for Stevens but the fact that he likes to pass and he'll play D.

Man, listen. I'm terrified of both Boston and Philly but Boston runs deep. The only thing that gives me hope is the salary cap. We gonna have to deal with it until the youngin's are up for 2nd contracts.

But Ainge STILL got draft picks that'll help get a big to replace Horford. SMH. Philly better make the most of this top 10 pick they get this year. They gonna need it.

id lean Smart btw. will be cheaper at this point, and sadly, yall have a veritable cornucopia of scoring options. Smart's the dawgiest dawg in your backcourt.

Smart might not get offers he's hoping for. The real problem is Rozier clearly deserves 30 minutes and will leave. Smartest move is probably trade Rozier at high value and re-sign smart.

If Rozier could get the Cs a legit C prospect back, I'd take it. Grumble, but understand.

In response to Reply # 90

one, you're capped out and will be for at least the duration of the horford contract (and probably longer, if you give tatum or brown their money).

two, unless you're willing to pay a massive, massive luxury tax bill, you probably won't be able to afford to keep tatum, brown, and hayward.

three, scary terry may have already played himself out of your price range. Someone will absolutely pay that guy at least ten million per year, and no team can spend that money on backups for very long.

four, the limited number of teams with cap space might keep the price tag for terry low, and it will definitely keep smart's pricetag low.

five, based on smart and his agent's comments, he seems like the kind of guy who would carry a grudge if boston doesn't give him what he wants, to the point of going somewhere else for the same money boston offers him.

since some of these guys are going to have to leave the team eventually, danny might want to load up on guys like terry and marcus as solid guys on decent contracts who can offer immediate help to trade partners and salaries to balance a superstar trade.

of course, that assumes ownership is willing to go into the luxury tax a year or two early, before tatum and/or brown get their money. i have no doubt they'll go into it at that point, but getting started on the repeater clock before then means it gets really big really quick.

my guess: smart walks, rozier sign and trade for a top five protected first rounder (assuming you can sign and trade restricted guys, I always forget that).

In response to Reply # 96

if they trade him, it'd probably be this summer, not next.

also, the cap is manageable. complicated in 2 years, but manageable. Depends on what Horford wants/expects and if Danny will max Kyrie or trade him because Trader Danny trades.

if the Cs could reasonably expect to wait another year to make the Rozier decision, that'd be dope because another year of playing and the Cs could legitimately decide to sign him long-term but cheaper than Kyrie and trade Kyrie (not that that is wise, but it leaves that option available). but they can't and it's not worth it. trade him, get that extra pick, be a team with 3 or 4 max stars and a whole shit-ton of youngins hustling.

He wouldn't start next year anyhow.

With Rozier, it's all about whether you believe Rozier's numbers are sustainable. If you think his 38% from 3 this season is his peak and not the start of a trend, then obviously deal him ASAP (I tend to feel this way tbh). If you think he could play just as well next year as a sixth man of the year contender type of dude... that makes things more interesting.

but if he's 10 million or less per year, it gets complicated.

He does have Nerlens agent (still? how does that guy have a job?), so I expect stupidity to reign. He still can't shoot. He's still worth playing large minutes in a rotation. He's fine coming off the bench.

Rozier might not be happy with a 6th man position. He may really want alpha dog status.

In response to Reply # 99

It's possible either Smart or Rozier, both age 24, might think that, if they can't get some ideally huge offer elsewhere, signing a shorter deal with the Celtics (2 years, maybe) and increasing demand through strong off-the-bench play on a perennial contender is worth something. Certainly guys who've come from or stuck with the Warriors would get paid a lot by losers (see: Barnes), and with Kyrie and Hayward coming off injury, there may be opportunity for good minutes to keep the stars fresh and healthy.

But you can't guarantee health or minutes, really, and especially with Rozier, you can't guarantee that your play will maintain at this small sample size's level. So if there's big demand, try to meet it now. I'm not 100% sure what the Smart demand will be. Rozier's demand may be big for a loser in need of a guard-- question will be how *much* that loser would want to pay, and if Rozier would rather do that than try to hold out, keep winning, and prove his worth further over the course of another year. Does Rozier think he's a 38% perennial 3PT shooter? I'm not sure that I do.

Try to sell them the first paragraph's message: nothing raises your price like being a valuable part of a winner. See if that works-- if it doesn't, bye.

i doubt it after he showed out as a starter, but you could give him 25-30 minutes a game easily as Kyrie's backup + playing along kyrie in a small ball lineup.

Alternatively, you keep Rozier for cheap and get a replacement in the draft in 2019 while hoping Smart will not get the offers he wants and get Nerlens'd by the same agent that Nerlens'd Nerlens

if rozier signs an extension for anything less than 4 for 44, he's got the worst agent in the world. i'd bet great money he's not on your playoff roster next year.

if i'm danny, i try to strike at the draft this year and trade him for a top five pick and dude who can be your center of the future post horford. there are just so many dudes at the top of the draft that are perfect for you guys and, when paired with brad stephens and his system, will make multiple all star teams.

of course, you might not need to do that if the lakers pick conveys. grr.

He'd want Jaylen (who he'd turn into the second coming of Kawhi, as that's basically what Stevens was aiming for), future draft pick(s), and salary to match (maybe sign Rozier to a deal @ like 12-15mil per, and include him, Theis maybe).

When the smoke cleared, Ainge would be 2 future picks light but his lineup would look like:

-Kyrie/Larkin
-Hayward/Smart
-Kawhi/Tatum/Ojeleye
-Morris/Monroe (Re-signed)
-Horford/Baynes

And Tatum would get hella run in the small ball lineup where he replaces Morris.

And THAT team would win the title next year.

But we all know it ain't happening (well I'd be very surprised if)

I don't think what's going in Boston is an X and O thing, it's more of a locker room thing. Still, managing that is part of Stevens's and a part where he is evidently lacking in experience. I also think Ainge has created kind of an unstable environment there. A big part of it is just having a lot of talented players who obviously can't all be part of the long-term plan. But other parts of it are just his general Saudi-like willingness to put asset management above all else. That will seep into the culture of the team eventually, and this is from someone who really admires the job both guys had done to this point.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Obviously the young guys were playing over their heads last year and their numbers would drop with two more heavy-minute guys in the rotation even if they weren't. Of course there were doubts about what version of Kyrie and Gordon they were going to get but I think that's pretty much been within the range of reasonable expectation.

But even as a skeptic, I just thought 1) they had *zero* shot at the NBA title and 2) they weren't automatic in the East. Right now they aren't even automatic to get out of the first round and I would be flat-out surprised to see them go beyond the second.

Kyrie goes to Brooklyn in place of D-Lo and they end up being better than Boston?

A young core of players made a run to the ECF...a year later, looks like they’re blowing it up

‘Rie gone
Horford gone

They moved Baynes, and are talking about moving Rozier...for cap space

To do what?

Haven’t heard any FA names considering BOS and those picks aren’t going to make up for the losses

A lot of folks were partying after the Fultz deal

2 years later...BOS is blowing it up...?

TF is Ainge doing?
