"fighting in pro sports..."

2 major brawls in baseball already, we already know how they get down in hockey, its funny how fighting is condemned a lot more harshly in basketball...even a physical sport like football they don't really allow it, do they have fights in soccer?

MLB brawls are a little bit laughable too but there will definitely be multiple punches thrown versus the controversial push/punch or glancing blow or push in basketball with much made of it.

I think it's mostly an inside vs. outside issue. Basketball players are expected to act more cultured since they play indoors (LOL)

The double standard for hockey thuggery is even more glaring.

The only "OH SHIT" moments I remember in football is the Odell / Josh thing and definitely the Talib / Crabtree because of the chain snatching / sideline busting / wrestling / helmet punch combination of action going on.

I agree with the overall point of this post, but that is a bad example to use of the NBA not being that bad as it was a historically bad brawl.

OK, I'll hit dude because I don't want y'all mad at me in the locker room but y'all expect me to fight him too?

hockey is probably the most inherently dangerous sport in the world, and the etiquette that keeps it from being a total car wreck has to be enforced. particularly in a sport where some enterprising coach could send out John Q Goonface to cheap shot a star without actually hurting his own team in the longrun

baseball has pitchers that will almost never have to stand in a batters box and face the music if they decide to throw at someone, and getting kicked out of 1 of 162 games isnt really that big of a deal.

football punishes its violations in ways that preclude someone from having to throw hands on behalf of their QB or something. same with basketball, in that dangerous plays are generally punished in ways that keep situations from escalating.

Fighting doesn't happen in football much because it is not an effective way to police anything or even get in a cheap shot. The helmets and gear just make it impractical. The fact is, most of the players out there are not going to touch the ball much or at all, they are basically already fighting each other every snap, and if you want to police something/get at someone, it's easy enough to do so before they blow the whistle.

Why break your hand trying to punch someone in a helmet when you could cut block them a few plays from now.

You can kill someone fairly easily in basketball.

I never understood that argument. It's stupid.

Basketball players don't fight because they don't
fight, because they know they'll be (culturally)
punished for it much worse.

It's how racism works.

>You can kill someone fairly easily in basketball.

no hitting of any sort is legal in basketball. laying someone out is legally built in to hockey. liberties are taken.

>I never understood that argument. .

it helps when you arent arguing against it before thinking about it.

>Basketball players don't fight because they don't
>fight, because they know they'll be (culturally)
>punished for it much worse.

no one fights because no one has a reason to fight. undercutting a dunker WOULD be incredibly dangerous. luckily it happens at a miniscule fraction of the rate of stick penalties in the NHL.

because the average NHL game has legal plays that would garner suspensions in the NBA

https://youtu.be/gm9cP7aIdb4

those are legal collisions, and the NBA would suspend guys over contact like that.

If you can't see the difference between a contact sport that happens at three times the speed with sharp sticks in hands and razors on feet and basketball, then I just don't know what to tell you. It's not comparing cricket to MMA or anything but it's kind of close.

The racism vis-a-vis fighting in the NBA is in the penalties levied and public reaction. Not in the danger relative to hockey.

If you put the average person on a basketball court with pros, they would look foolish and sorry, but they would be physically safe.

If you put the average person who could skate on the ice with pros, they would run numerous risks of serious injury or death.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

You could not play a vertical game, guys used to hammer the fuck out of each other. As teams saw the effectiveness and entertainment value, that opened up, but flying in for a layup was dangerous ass business then.

That was a long fucking time ago though. In the 80s there was some stuff like that still going on and we saw a lot of fights. Today the officials, the pay checks and mutual respect take care of that. It is very rare to see someone clocked in the air and when it does happen, heads roll. They obviated the need for fighting and reduced danger there. There is other cheap stuff that I think deserves a punch in the face but you're pushing a relativist argument devoid of fact or context all through this thread.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If you look at fighting in the NHL, it is WAY down. Entire teams have less than one guy had in the 80s or even ten years ago when guys like Kenopka and Neil were punching people in the face for a living. In fact you can barely make a living punching people in the face anymore, and you can't if that is all you do. I think the decline in fighting has let some guys get a little out of pocket and wouldn't mind seeing a return of the heavyweight to put some of these cheap little pests back in their place. The league does a weak job of it.

In the NFL the guys wear so much equipment and shit that there isn't much point to it unless they were to remove their helmets and square off like in hockey. Doing that on firm ground and with the size of some of those guys would be a recipe for disaster.

Baseball fights are mostly just exercises in hot-headedness and making it look like you'll stick up for the hot head on your side. Sometimes they get good but not often. I love the guys in the bullpen looking at each other like "do we have to go on the field or fucking not?" in the early stages of a fight. To me it's dumb and should come out of the game but I guess the "code" is a little more clear there than it is in the NHL, where it's complex beyond the point of comprehension and now really means very little anyway.

The NBA is the most interesting one. I was watching that throwback video with all the Boston and Detroit fights and shit. I don't know, on one hand I do think it policed some cheap stuff, on the other it seemed like a lot of it was done to try to intimidate star players. There was also a lot of sucker punching or nailing guys in the air. I do think fighting has a place in basketball and that Stern's NBA really had a knee-jerk reaction to it. I get that, right or wrong (obviously wrong), the league has to hold itself to a higher standard in terms of image, behavior, etc because it's a black league with a mostly non-black audience. But at the same time, there is stuff that can go on on the court and get out of control and, frankly, the only remedy is to stand up for yourself or your teammate. That shouldn't be punished SO harshly

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
