"OKPW: Wrestlemania 34"
Wed Apr-04-18 10:21 AM by pretentious username

https://tinyurl.com/trillride (no, that's not a typo)

Same rules as always. This goes without saying but if Carmella's attempt at a cash-in is thwarted before the bell rings it does not count as a cash-in.

For the purposes of the Elias question we will define finishing moves by what's listed as "present" on wikipedia. For instance, I picked 3 cause I believe The Rock shows up and delivers 1 People's Elbow and 2 Rock Bottoms. If he happens to do one of his 1996 finishers (running crossbody or shoulderbreaker) I would NOT count that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwayne_Johnson#In_wrestling

If there's anything else you need clarified, let me know.

EDIT: oh yeah, also who else is going and what indie shows are you checking out? I'm going to some of the WWN shows (Evolve, Progress, Beyond), the Lucha/Impact show, and the Wrestlecon Supershow

Apparently this thing (pre show + main card) could be 7 hours. Godspeed if you're going to try and make it bell to bell.

I'd kinda just like to soak in the scene before the actual show, but if the friends I'm with don't wanna go for all of the preshow then I wouldn't mind missing some of it. If I could guarantee the cruiserweights were on last that'd be ideal, but it seems unlikely. They've spent 5 years proving these battle royals don't matter so those are whatever.

I want Roman to win. I've grown tired of Bork and tired of the Haymen promos also. As much as he's manufactured, I for one welcome our Roman Empire.

I want AJ vs Nak to be last and given a good amount of time. No 15 minute match, this one deserves almost if not 30 minutes.

I got a strange feeling Taker vs. Cena is going to be last with Taker coming out at the end of the show when everyone thinks its about to be over.

>Progress, Beyond), the Lucha/Impact show, and the Wrestlecon
>Supershow

I'm getting there Saturday morning. I might hit up Pancakes and Piledrivers 2 depending on how folks feel after breakfast and bag dropoffs/checkins.

http://www.wrestling-news.net/pro-wrestling-revolver-to-present-pancakes-piledrivers-this-saturday-at-wrestlecon-in-new-orleans/105173/

Allegedly, general admission is all that's left ticket-wise tho. Hmmm...a brother wants a seat! But that's what we get for waiting around too damn long to decide on an indy show to hit up!

Besides that, I'm all WWE for the weekend. I get my first NXT show...finally!

Mania is almost certainly gonna be long as hell, but there's some matches that I am REALLY excited for. Nak vs AJ for instance. Usos/New Day/Ex-Wyatts too. I wanna get there in the middle of the preshow, but I'll see what my goofball crew is talking about when the time comes.

We almost have to get Taker/Cena in some way, shape, or form. I'm terrified that Taker can't go at all anymore tho, so who knows how that's gonna shake out. I'd love for Jericho to show up to make it a Cena/Taker/Jericho triple threat, but that's a total innanet nerd dream. But Jericho is dope like that so we'll see. Or maybe we get another 'legends finisher parade' somehow.

Elias is going to be great too. They'll get someone to show up and interact with him in some way and it will be fun because that's what Elias does. Maybe Dwayne. Maybe not.

Bray Wyatt is gonna be Strowman's partner, right? Right? That or Rey Jr for some random ass reason. The funny money is in James Ellsworth, but I just don't think it's gonna happen.

NXT is always worth the price of admission. Enjoy. I can't wait to see Ricochet debut.

By then they stopped trying to make it up to Nitro's level but it hadn't yet gotten to the "so bad its laughably entertaining" level that it sunk to by 2000.

One that I watched had a main event of Bret Hart v. Disco Inferno... And all of the in ring promos had this lighting to make it look like it was a thunderstorm it was ridiculous lol

Haven't watched any Saturday Nights yet but I plan to soon.

finished with NWA World Championship wrestling, now watching Clashes and PPVs from 89-91

but i saw some shit i hadnt seen since the first time i saw it as a child, and its crazy how clearly i remembered it. Kevin Sullivan breaking Jimmy Garvin's leg, Dusty getting his eye gouged out, Sting beating Rotunda for the TV belt, Horsemen turn on Ole, Eddie Gilbert unleashing Ricky Steamboat...man. Plus THE best AND worst wrestling commentators of all time on the same broadcast team (Jim Ross + David Crockett) made for some hilarity.

we had cable very early (80's) and having access to Saturday Night (and Main Event to a degree) made Superstars look SO lame, and pretty much kept WWF a secondary interest for most of my fanhood.

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

The ladder creativity is great but it's been a sloppy affair with a ton of timing issues and/contrived setups.

That big VD/Ricochet spot in particular was pretty rough.

I dig the one-upmanship between Lars and KD though.

It's certainly possible that I'm just a little fatigued of this style of match at this point but I'm not at all engrossed in this, despite some great individual spots.

It came off great live even with the handful of rough spots. And Puma looked like a gawd to start.

That last match was rasslin poetry to me. It was lthe more successful version of the thing HHH goes for in his epic matches but he usually can’t get just right.

Zelina is such a great heel manager. Loved the ending of that match, especially after Cien played all the hits. The spike Rana looked absolutely beautiful- not as devastating as the one she hit on Drew, but the way Black posted up on his head was gorgeous.

And man - Gargano/Ciampa was an epic. LOVED LOVED LOVED the spot with the announce table cover, precisely because I've never seen anyone use that before. Gargano stopping before he stabbed Ciampa with the crutch was a fantastic spot, and man- the STF with the knee brace was such a great way to finish it. I kinda hope these two stay in NXT forever, because I'm positive Road Dogg wouldn't know what to do with either on Smackdown.

In response to Reply # 0

Predicted every match correctly

As far as multiman ladder matches go this is the best one I've seen. Great way to introduce EC3 and Ricochet to NXT. I think giving Cole the win was the right decision especially after what happened later.

Ember Moon may be getting the call up soon, and she should. And honestly I think she should be the one to break Asuka's streak maybe next year since they had such a great NXT feud. Anyway Shana getting the win here made a lot of sense. She's pretty much the monster female of NXT and this pushes how dangerous she is will still making Ember look strong. She went out like a G, not mad at all.

Undisputed Era needed this win and the Strong swerve no one saw coming at all. One of the best swerves I've seen in a minute. I feel like they have big plans for UE and I don't think there are any other successful factions in the WWE at the moment. Keep these guys together so they can do big things on the main roster one day.

Alister had to get this win but the way the match went at times I didn't think it would happen. Amazing match and this just shows Almas can go.

Gargano vs Ciampa. Holy shit. 5 stars. The small things like the ref not being in a ref shirt since this match was unsanctioned. The match going on last and after the normal Takeover time limit like those old school territory "lights out" matches. The storytelling, the ring work. This match had it all. Gargano has two 5 star matches so far this year in less than 6 months. MOTY contender for sure. Watch this shit!

So far to me Takeover = Matches
Wrestlemaina = Moments

I hope AJ and Nak can do something similar match quality wise because these are going to be hard acts to follow.

Hate to say it but I knew Vince wouldn't have two Japanese champions on the same brand simultaneously. Of course, I figured that meant they'd end up keeping the title on Styles but guess not.

Great match though I don't know if Charlotte should've been the one to break the streak.

Sorry, probably should've given the match itself more of its due but I was pretty shocked that Asuka didn't go over—thought that was as much of a lock as anything on the card.

Charlotte's face told the story of the whole match as it went on

i dont know the storyline*, but charlotte winning makes perfect sense, as does the post-match hug, if they are being put on different shows. also thething that really got over tonight was the belt itself. plus now they draw money on Asuka chasing flair, the same way sting** chasing nature boy drew better than the other way around. i wish asuka had done something dastardly actually. when she told the fans to shut up i literally edged forwrard in my seat.

*so i actually owe cold truth a response on this very issue to a very well thought out reply he made to me
** to write a good reply to CT i watches new RAW recently for the first time in 16+ years. asuka was the only interesting wrestler and at the time she struck me as a young sting+muta+goldberg kinda deal.

What was the point? 1)....The length of that match was about as long as the Undertaker could go.....2)....Cena, the ultimate company man, did Vince a solid by restoring the Undertaker's "Dead Man" mythical status after he took that HUGE L last go around at his last Wrestle Mania.

I think when Cena retires people will figure out how much of a stand-up dude he is.....

which is more reason that the match shouldnt have taken place in the first place. Is a 5 minute squash really redeeming yourself from a shit performance last wrestlemania?

2)....Cena, the

nobody is questioning his mythical status in 2018.

I mean he has been taking pins like crazy the last few months. Everyone knows what he does for the company. I know this match probably only happened because Cena wanted it. But this was a waste of time in an already over inflated show.

I thought that roll-through into the Styles Clash would be the start of a hot five-minute finishing sequence but then that was just it.

I've given Nak the benefit of the doubt on his WWE run to this point, and I'm not totally sure the underwhelming nature of that match is wholly his fault, but given Styles' track record against much lesser opponents I'm maybe ready to say Nak really is just being kinda lazy.

At least the turn will add some fire to the rematch.

They wanted to create an "Awww" moment for Wrestlemania. They did it on the backs of two of the hardest working guys in the tag division. Sheamus out here working fucked up with something that could soon end his career. Cesaro sacrificed his teeth on a PPV earlier for you people, and you repay him like this?

They couldn't have found someone else to bring in as a surprise? Shit felt disrespectful to those titles because WWE wanted to be cute.

Samoa Joe is returning from injury. Jesus Christ, Braun and Joe would be damn near unstoppable.
They could have patched things up with Neville. Red Arrow off of Braun for the finish? yes please.
Ambrose was returning. That could have been a fun tag team.
Hell, Braun walked right by No Way Jose. That would have been fun.

Reigns would be great if they fully committed to him as a heel.

Bith are awful propositions based on the way they've been booked.

I'm glad this shit is only ten bucks now, i'll say that

The IC match was good.

Charllotte and Asuka had the best match of the night by a fair margin.

Daniel Bryan had a great showing, but we had to endure the horrendous working punches of Super Shane to get to him.

Minus a few great moments it was all downhill beyond that.

The Rousey match could have been excellent, were it not painfuy overbooked. It did have some fantastic moments though.

Elias was cool

After that this was varying shades of bad, awful, and dog shit.

I enjoyed this but the finish was weak imo.

Rousey was great in that match. Kurt looks stiff as hell. Im glad he isnt wrestling full time.

Jinder winning was just wtf? Rusev is losing steam this was their chance to give him some juice.

everything else was just blah. Daniel Bryan had some good moments but the match was shit. Aj/Nak was weak. Smackdown tag team was straight garbage.

But man that is way to much wrassling for one night. The crowd was dead by the 4th match. When you lose the crowd forget it.

November 8th, 2005 The greatest night in the history of GD!

match #2 is a tad premature for the emotional climax. when they do the next return, WWE needs to strongly consider making them the main event. no one was ever going to care about anything the same way they cared about Charlotte's frustrated tearful face after yet another Asuka kick-out.

also, what didn't you like about the finish? i actually thought it was perfect, with the cherry on top of Charlotte continuing to sell her injured left arm as she bridged up.

also also, i really appreciated the restraint after the first match. Moonsault/suplex/spanish fly were clearly (and logically) set up as the only 3 high spots in the whole match and each one hit the mark. The chain wrestling after the missed moonsault was excellent, the suplex was a legit breathtaker that Charlotte sold perfectly (recurring theme), and the false finish after the spanish fly was perfectly done.

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

is that Rousey and Taker had both JUST DEMONSTRATED what backing someone down with good working MMA punches look like. And then Shane walks up with that baby-armed bullshit.

over the Summer. Have the homie Romie win it at Summerfest. Braun did the ambulance spot at Balls - there's his motivation for going after champ Roman, with a reunited Shield brought together to protect him. Yeah, Ambrose still gets hurt somewhere in there.

You can have Nak win the Rumble still to set up the WK10 rematch.

Braun gets shots at, let's say Survivor Series and HiaC, but gets Numbers gamed. Roman declares that he's done with Braun. He's beat him twice, what's left to do? He takes on, like, Corbin and Ziggler at Rumble and EC. The crowd goes home happy from EC after Braun wins that. Bam. Super-hot face Braun against heeled out Roman. You can even throw in Brock and make it a triple threat.

Brock and Heyman come out and announce Brock is forfeiting the title and leaving the company because there's no one left for him to beat. That brings out Finn Balor who says he's never beat him, and he never lost the title to begin with. Heyman agrees to one last match and the night ends with Balor as champ.

Brock sucks now and never comes around, but the title stays on him. Cool since Roman the character sucks...but Roman the wrestler is great, especially with a bunch of blood all over him. The match hand a chance to transcend, then right as it neared lift off it ended. Felt rushed.

They reference Brock/Reigns 1 all night, yet Rollins is demoted to the IC belt. Long term stupid, short term very fun watching at at home and for the crowd.

Strowman is better than everyone and is hanging out with a fifth grader. That sucks. And yet, that rules.

AJ/Nak - “Dream Match” as in “you may dream during it”? If not for the heel turn it would’ve been deemed a massive disappointment. But a heel turn after, so tight.

Washed Triple H and Kurt Angle in the same match...but Random Ronda Rousey is the only one in there worth a damn in 2018. I don’t even know what that means - I’m all set on Angle and Hunter on TV, but I also don’t know I’ll be nearly as interested in Rousey’s next move.

Baggy Jorts John bounces around for Old Man Taker like Shawn vs Hogan at Summerslam. But if I get past my cynicism I can’t deny it’s fun. Taker like “I came to play the hits.” It’s worthless. But, like, really entertaining worthless.

In a stadium, against big characters like Daniel Bryan and Shane, Zayn and Owens get gobbled up in the scenery. I don’t get them. They look like two dudes who walk around a Gold’s Gym for two hours without ever doing anything. Owens mantra is something like “fight all the time” or something, but cmon.

The great joke is that WWE puts out 50/50 programming all year then caps it with a 50/50 show. The whatever stuff - Taker/Cena, AJ/Nak - still served a purpose. On the other hand, Brock won, which makes more sense, and yet I couldn’t care less.

I'll make it quick
edit: No I wont.

Matt Hardy wins mens battle royal. He's not right now, might as well keep him that way, and we get reintroduced to Bray who from the looks of it didn't drown in the lake but came out #Woken. If this means they'll start taking Bray serious I'm all for it.

Woman's Battle Royal. Naomi... why? I mean I'm not pissed, but you have a few more that needed that win more than a former champion. Whatever

IC title was good. I had Miz keeping this one but honestly anyone winning would have been great. Rollins now has held all the Raw titles, that should have been a give away seeing as how much they were focusing on that. Still a great showing by both.

Flair vs Asuka. Probably the best match on the show. I had Asuka winning this but you know what? I'm not mad. You have two of the best female wrestlers. Reminds me of when Okada beat Naito and everyone lost their shit. Naito was on fire, Okada is still the best in the world so it makes sense. We had a credible person end the streak, she'll get the belt soon so I'm good with this.

The Rousey match was way better than I expected. No complaints.

US Title Match. Rusev is red hot right now with the fans. So ya know, give it to Jinder. Maybe we can get another Jinder vs. Orton feud out of this. My insides died writing that.

Smackdown Title Match. Would have had Usos retain. They have their main card Wrestlemania moment and walk away with a win to show appreciation for all they've done for the tag team division in the past year. These dudes were normally pre show only. The live action role players with the win. I'm not mad, just felt like whatever. Also match wasn't as great as regular New Day and Usos matches. This was a packed show though so some matches had to suffer.

Cena runs to the back to change into his Jorts. Elias gets some time. Taker walks to ring and wins in two minutes. This was basically a segment to me. Gave Taker a quick win over Cena without it dragging and looking bad. I respect it.

Owens and Zayn lose. Had to suffer through Shane to get to Brayn. Was ok, I'm glad he's back. Nothing else to see here.

Fuck, how many matches were there?!

Nia wins over Bliss. I'm glad there was no cash in here. After the whole HHH/Booker T fiasco years ago they had to let the bully lose.

AJ wins over Nak. I didn't care who won I just wanted a good match. Scratch that, at this point I wanted to see Nak take it. Wanted to see at least one rumble winner get a title. Does Vince hate Asians? Now we get cocky piece of shit Nak, which is good, still could have had him take the title. My beef with this match is it felt rushed. Wasn't even close to their first match in New Japan. Then you remember this is WWE, and match quality apparently only counts on NXT.

Braun wins tag gold with a little kid from the crowd. He beat former Heavyweight champion Sheamus and Swiss Superman with a child. Not a real surprise partner, but a child. This would have been cute earlier in the night, not the second to last match though. I mean I know that was a cool off match but still. Apparently some of you nerds like this type of fuckery, so I won't say anymore

Brock splits Roman's head down to the white meat and retains. W.T.F. Ok I'm no fan of Roman, but he's there, and he does give a shit about wrestling enough to be around all the time. I'm sick of Brock, sick of the stale Haymen promos. I'd gladly give Roman the title so I wouldn't have to deal with their shit anymore. Got a feeling creative wanted to say "Ha Ha fuckers yall thought Roman was gonna win!".

How many times is this man going to headline Wrestlemaina? Just give him the win so we can move on. So we can have a champion that doesn't mind coming to work every week. Hey, I don't think the title needs to be defended on TV every week, it should be prestigious and only defended on PPV's if you ask me, but for fuck sake!

There was no reason to do this other than to point and laugh at the fans, but sometimes a predictable win is good storytelling (See NXT's entire Takeover). I assume that was a shoot punch because no way Vince would want that much blood on Mania with all this media attention.

I thought the show was meh. Wasn't horrible, wasn't good, just meh.

Should be Nak’s advocate. It would work and Nak’s easily a more varied worker than Suplex City Brock.

Raw could be bonkers tonight. Or...people could leave New Orleans pissed.

Zoomed out:

I loved the NXT Takeover show because it worked the way it’s supposed to per my perspective on rasslin after watching this shit for 35 years. Monsters are monsters that have to be taken down. Heels are heels that people throw strong hate on because they have earned it. Ciampa for instance. That is what a main event heel should get when he comes to the ring...just a pure rainstorm of boos and hope to see him get what’s coming to him. People still like to see bad people get theirs. Almas and old girl finally got theirs after cheating to stay on top. The tweeners like Velveteen get love from nerds like me cuz he’s good at what he does. The gymnasts like Puma Ricochet get love for elevating everything they’re involved in to a spectacle. And I’ll be damned if people don’t love the hell out of lil Jonathan Wrestling as a pure face. It was that way in Evolve when I saw him 2 years ago. It’s that way now. He is so good at this shit it ain’t even funny. I would’ve cried if he would’ve somehow lost that match. I swear. And they teased it amazingly well but allowed him to rise above it in a mostly reasonably way. And bang..it works!

Mania felt a little Russoriffic/swerve too muchy. Truth’s commentary over the years about the ills of horrible booking rang true a bit too often for my taste last night. I’ll make myself wait until the whole mania week ends before I go too far with anything too negative but I’m skeptical about a few things the morning after fo sho.

The funny thing: the crowd was lit for the moments where things were built even reasonably well. Ronda’s hot tag for instance. They built to that moment well, she delivered ridiculously well, and the crowd was overtly pleased. And when she finally got Steph’s hands pried loose for the armbar? Shiiiiiid. The crowd was hella happy. It was the mountain top of the show to me. Hmmm...imagine that! Build shit, pay it off, then build to the next shit. Simple storytelling! Don’t start me on her getting at HHH too! That dude is trying like hell to pay for his sins from 15 or so years ago.

Meanwhile, they booked Reigns to disrespectfully and repeatedly survive death itself at the end of a long ass show. The crowd saw it coming and shat all over it. The crowd damn near quit watching the match after he kicked out of the 2nd f5. There were super random chants. There were at least 10 beach balls. I don’t know how it sounded or looked on the network yet, but it sounded/looked like the worst thing ever in-person for a main event. Compared to nxt, it was embarrassing. At some point, Reigns kicked out of an f5 and the crowd chanted ‘bullshit’. That’s not good! And then, swervity swerve, bro with a 6th F5 to end it. Folks were walking out complaining like nobody’s business. That is not good!

I’m hoping/assuming Brock loses tonight to a non-Reigns entity. Well hell, we’ll see. It is clear that they know how to book stories well so it is just a matter of if this Brock story has a good end coming or not. I’ll take Taker putting the gongs on him, kicking his ass, and then vacating the title. I’ll take Paul latching onto Strowman and then letting that be what happens. It’s not happening, but I’ll take a Samoa joe appearance...even better, Cesaro. Okay okay...I’m dreaming now. But do something.

It did. Me and the guys I came with had an isle easily accessible so that helped at Mania. And I was legit amped for most of the main show card + the cruisers.. But after Ronda, I was scurred we were going past 11 pm central time. And I damn near wanted to leave before Reigns/Beef con Carne. I felt that match layout coming and it delivered my worst fears. Brock winning might actually be worse than wwe again not sacking up and letting Reigns win (again). I want to elbow someone in the face over Reigns getting another damn title shot in a few weeks. It’s embarrassingly bad. Some other time!

I was dying in the nosebleeds of the Smoothie King Center for nxt and raw. It felt like a quest to leave your seat for anything. And I felt like I was gonna need a minor knee procedure from those seats. I still don’t know what it was. Whatever happened, I’m never getting nosebleed seats at that stadium again.

I kinda failed the nxt show by being too tired to give the last chunk of it my all. I flew into New Orleans hella early that day and failed to get an old man nap in during the day (the crew I came with is mostly slow to make decisions, get ready, and all of that). The Ember Moon match was just slow enough to remind me that I was old af and tired. Those last two matches were special tho. I cannot wait to watch them back once I’m finally back home and I get a free few hours.

I was in much better condition for the raw show. And it helps that Raw feels small after mania.

77. "5 positives and 5 negatives"
In response to Reply # 0

1. Rousey was incredible
2. Daniel Bryan is back!
3. Charlotte v. Asuka was the best women's match ever on the main roster
4. Roman Reigns didn't leave as champion
5. Again, Rousey was incredible

1. Waaaay too long, I was starting to fade during AJ/Nak
2. Undertaker/Cena fan service/greatest hits served no purpose
3. Roman kicking out of 4-5 F5s was beyond dumb and deservingly got no reaction
4. Nicholas
5. Gonna use this spot to say one more time, Rousey was fucking incredible

I honestly struggled to come up with 5 negatives because everything I was coming up with all came down to #1, it was way too long. Too many special entrances, video packages needed to be trimmed or at least scrapped for some of the less important matches, and some matches could have been left off the main card altogether. If it means that much to get everybody on the card make this shit at 2-day event already.

This could have been an all-timer if the main card was:
- Braun def. Brock for the title
- AJ/Nak going all out
- Rousey match exactly how it was
- D-Bry return with even a little bit more D-Bry
- Charlotte/Asuka exactly how it was
- IC title 3-way
- SD tag
- Cena in the crowd the entire time, occasionally panning to his reactions to big moments

Obviously throw Roman in there somewhere, maybe sub him in for Angle in the Rousey match or add him to the IC title match. Scrap the US and Raw Women's title or move them to the pre-show. That card above is a fantastic 3.5 hours.

Usos and New Day deserved more time and a better match.

Cedric and Ali needed more time and could have been an insane match

AJ and Nak could have been as good as the first one, it was almost like it ended short and they slowed the match down because they didn't want them to show up the Roman and Brock match or something. Very odd

But hey we got a fucking kid from out of the crowd. That whole thing didn't even need to exist.

Granted, Steph is hot garbage in a ring, Kurt is officially dirts older brother, and Hunter has long overstayed his welcome as a performer.

I only say that to be diplomatic, because Ronda did far more than simply do her part.

I've never seen someone so fresh in the business carry that many seasoned vets toward such a memorable match. I'll stopp short of saying it's never happened, but goddamn.

That was outstanding.

She was magical. Special. Magnetic. When she lit up Haitch, She looked like a King of Fighters character launching a super.

That punch flurry needs to be a signature move.

This is the thing: I think it was mostly executed on purpose. Aka I think HHH understands this thing. And I think they saw her in training, made ‘oh shit, she’s good...and only we know!’ faces at each other, and set the match up wonderfully to showcase her. They built to that tag classically and then she came in and blew all of OUR tainted expectations out of the water. To me, there’s no way Haitch and them didn’t know all of this. That’s why I’m currently quite pressed about this whole Roman situation being so impressively botched. But hey...I’m trying to fall back and just watch it all unfold.

That "You Still Got It" chant was ridiculous, since all he'd done was trade punches at that point.

If people think he's "still got it" based on that match, I'm not sure people understand how good Kurt Angle was in his prime.

If "it" is the ability to be a warm body in a match while going through the motions of his greatest hits without completely stinking up the joint I guess he's still got it.

Kurt stuggles with every move. Its good to see him, but not really. He's a shell, a shadow of his true glory. Same with Taker, Haitch, etc.

In response to Reply # 0

I interpreted it as an indictment of the poor quality match itself.

I highly doubt a quality, back and forth, competetive fight would have yielded such a burial.

I doubt people would have shit on it if each guy wasn't spamming the same tired ass move over and over.

Because that wasn't a match.

That as a 2K game with two unskilled players selecting the most OP characters and spamming the hell out of moves because A. They lack the desire, if not the skill, to put down a quality match, and B, the flawed counter/reversal mechanics make it too easy to bother investing time to develop enough skill to pplay the game in a more visually appealing and exciting way.

The popular opinions i see are still that this was all about Roman. If true, thats fucking stupid IMO, because regardless of how many F5's he kicked out of, it's a boring ass way to do a match regardless of who is doing it.

It was a terribly booked match, and a horrible way to main event the biggest night of the year, regardless of the participants.

IMO those chants were wareanted due to the quality of the match, nit just beacause Roman was able to keep kicking out of Brocks finisher.

We knew Brock was going to spam Germans (though the Belly-to-bellies were a nice variant). We knew Roman was going to kick out of at least one F5. But that he kicked out of fucking FIVE? Come right the fuck on. It's because the match was *SLAM* lay around *SLAM* lay around *SLAM* lay around.

Woulda been cool if Roman got busted open, fired up, and then got stopped with a Kimura (can't Superman Punch if your arm's hanging off)- they could have done a great Stone Cold parallel. Woulda been cool if they just ran at each other in the beginning and traded hands like the beatdowns in the build-up alluded to.

Shit, the Samoa Joe match was more interesting than this.

Fuck, Goldberg won with a flash Spear. Do that.

He kicked out of 4 or 5 F5s when it only took one to put down Braun. They allowed blading just to add emphasis on how badly Brock needed to beat him up before he got the 3 count. That ending was all about gaining sympathy for Roman and maybe even to show us "See! We aren't forcing him to be the guy, he's losing matches!" How many Manias before ended with the loser's music hitting and him walking about as the final image?

It reminded me of those early Manias where no matter what, Hulk's music and him posing was the final image of the night, even when he wasn't even in the main event match.

I’m with you for the most part.

It’s match construction mixed with horrendous booking. It was clear that Roman was gonna be setup to look like Street Fighter 3 Gill when folks had been dying on one F5 for quite a while. However, once Reigns kicked out of the 3rd F5, I considered everything after disrespectful to the whole weekend of events. Yeah, I was that ticked about it. It made the walk back to the hotel in drizzling rain even more lame.

Folks were ready to turn on that match all weekend and wwe did nothing to book around or through it. They basically booked the worst possible weekend and match for the situation other than a squash either way. Not even Johnny Wrestling survived as much as Roman did. And that was some Magnum TA vs Tully shit. And this fucker Roman getting another title shot just for fucks is shitty storytelling in a 2018 Wrestling world unless something crazy happens.

The moves being done aren’t significant issues. I think that’s where we might not be 100% on the same page. Brock is a mostly lazy and absentee champ who’s role as casual SNK boss has grown quite tired to lots of folks. That would be a problem regardless of moveset. The roster is great without him and Braun (and others) would be greater in a similar role if booked halfway decently.

And Roman Reigns is starting to look like Ultra Magnus. I don’t really think it’s his fault but it is damn sure his growing problem. WWE needs to solve it before they ruin a kid that they could forreal print money with. They aren’t exactly going out of business right now but I’d argue that they are leaving money on the table because of his booking right now.

In response to Reply # 0
Mon Apr-09-18 03:08 PM by Oak27

Everyone figured it would be Asuka - that they'd keep the streak alive, also have Rousey never lose and have them collide at Mania. But with Charlotte going over it's clear they are going with her, and I think that's the right choice. Asuka can't cut English promos that are more than just saying a few words, and Rousey can get to like a 6 out of 10 on the mic at best in the next year, so you need someone who can talk.

Charlotte seems to be THE leader of the pack when it comes to WWE-bred women and it only makes sense you have her beat Asuka so that next year when the casuals who really only turn up for Mania are wondering who Rousey is fighting they can say "Oh, that's the woman who made the undefeated chick tap out last year"

We all know WWE loves using the "women make history" and "for the first time ever" when it comes to the #WomensRevolution and at this point what else is there? They've had a Rumble, a MITB match, a HIAC, an Elimination Chamber, a PPV main event. The only thing left to check off the list is the WrestleMania main event. Rousey is their ticket, and Charlotte is a worthy opponent.

Keep Rousey busy with Steph through SummerSlam then have her start feuding with the Asukas, Sashas, Bayleys, etc. Have her win the Rumble, challenge Charlotte - who will have an equally dominating 2018 - and you have your WrestleMania 35 main event.

Nah. It’s fine. Shady cash in from a known shady character is fine.. I’m honestly glad they got the Carmella shady win out of the way. Charlotte is already established as the Queen Shit of the ladies no matter where she goes now. She won’t get lost in the mix cuz they probably need her as the foil for Rousey next year or at Summerfest if they want to move faster.

I think keeping Asuka away frokm both Charlotte and Ronda for a good while is a smart move.

That's assuming she goes to Raw, and Aduka comes to SD, of course.

Further, if Asuka comes and Charlotte stays, the IIconic beatdown menas it's clearly to set them up as allies in a build toward an eventual feud, which again.... smart money to let that simmer instead of doing the usual hotshot bullshit.

It's not burying the belt at all. To the contrary, it helps the MITB concept retain it's significance.

MITB has long been a tool to elevate talent into the title picture. Further, the where when, and how of a cash-in is and always has been an important facet of the concept. Post-Mania Raw has long been a perfect time and place for this. SD now gets some of that same treatment.

That isnt to say they always make the right decision, or go with the right person, or even give the cashier a chance.

In this case, they accomplished several goals. They elevated a quality heel into the title picture using the perfect gimmick for her character, introduced an excellent, well-regarded pair of young wrestlers, kept Charlotte strong while opening her up for a move to Raw while helping keeping Asuka away from her and Ronda for awhile, so that we get plwnty of time to build up a collision course for one or both eventual feuds.

I'm perhaps the biggest critic of WWE here, but this was one of the best booked segments between both shows, perhaps second only to the basic brilliance of maximizing Swag's heel status right away by having him take out a generationally beloved babyface the day after he returned from a three year absence from competition.

Literally everything about that cash-in screamed "big picture". I'm not sure it's possible to be more wrong about it than to call it a burial.

They've been getting a ton of shit wrong lately, this one couldn't have been executed any better.

It sets so many things in motion while still showing the importance of the MITB Briefcase. She's been thwarted with her attempted cash ins and have downright refused to do it at a time she thought wouldn't be beneficial. This was perfect.

I'm not pissed at Asukas loss, that streak ain't gonna be broken anytime soon, and in a way it was seen more important than a title. She's been NXT Woman's champ and never lost the belt, she'll be fine and won't have to streak making things super predictable anymore. Losing to Flair ain't a bad look when she's one of the best your roster has to offer. Maybe Ember can get that win over Asuka now also.

They need to keep Flair and Ronda away from each other as much as they can if they're trying to stretch this thing until Mania. I'd even have her tag until the eventual heel turn from one of them. Maybe we'll see the 4 HorseWomen for real.

But yeah I'm all for that cash in and introduction to the main roster for the Iconic Duo. Feels like one of the few things they got right around Mania.

This one ended against the "Queen" of the company at the biggest show of the year. A 3-year streak is still under Asuka's belt and is a huge accomplishment. I likely wouldn't have booked her to tap out, but that's nitpicking. I was more convinced that Charlotte could win than most but was surprised enough to pop even though I was cheering for Asuka. Asuka will get a title soon enough. She's fine and Charlotte looks even stronger.

You act like no one cares about her anymore when everyone still loves her and will pop for a title win. I believe she wins the SD title, Charlotte wins the Raw title, and Asuka gets her win back at Survivor Series. Then they go to a rubber match either before or after the Charlotte/Rousey program... again, all speculation, but as I mentioned the story isn't over and there's a million ways they could go with it, some entertaining and some not so much. Let's just wait.

Honestly you're the only one I've heard criticize this cash-in and I think you're off-base here. There have been a TON of MITB cash-ins from shady heels and they got over and didn't hurt the belt at all.

who's saying that? They built to this Carmella cash-in for a year so it automatically matters. Frankly this is already a better story than Becky's run, Natty's run, and arguably Naomi's as well. The fact that it was a cheap win IS the story here so I don't see that as "weakening the belt" really. And again, they can go wherever they want with this story and it is very possible it's gonna be more entertaining than Charlotte holding on to the belt and defeating all the same people.

I honestly feel like Asuka should have gotten out of the figure 8 and be the first and only person to do so. Give Flair that look of shock on her face when she can't believe someone escaped her hold. After that have her lose by pinfall. Then no one else gets out of that hold, you have the one person in the company that can do it and that's it.

In response to Reply # 145

the fact that you are "happy" that the best wrestler doesnt have it means that the belt has been devalued. moreover, if Charlotte goes to to RAW the whole women's SD division is devalued because they are overtly signalling that their best wrestler is moving on to bigger and better things.

im starting to realize that new-school booking for "smart" fans is incredibly boring to me. they had something that could have worked for months and a belt that meant something, and traded it in...for what?

maybe the game has passed me by, but this shit seems stupid. an emphasis on things other than the matches is boring business to me. i cared about WWE for the first time in over 15 years and it lasted less than a week.

>They elevated a quality heel into the title picture using the perfect gimmick for her character,

1)could have just had her win matches. 2) part of the problem is "her character". everything os so tightly wound that no one can get actual heat because no one attributes any actions to the performer. how do you build heat on someone when everyone is painfully aware that her "personality" is an entirely artificial construction?

>introduced an excellent, well-regarded pair of young wrestlers,

could have just had them win a match

>kept Charlotte strong while opening her up for a move to Raw

what charlotte did in the ring sunday keeps her strong regardless. going into what basically amounts to a developer's "debug mode" does notjong for the prestoge of the SD belt.

>while helping keeping Asuka away from her and Ronda for awhile, so that we get plwnty of time to build up a collision course for one or both eventual feuds.

they already had the feud youre talking about building. it was ready-made for 2018 to be the year for Asuka-Flair to be the biggest program in the whole company, and they killed it.

The story isn't over cause as we all know it never is. There's a million ways they can go with it and if we agree that Asuka/Ronda/Charlotte all look strong and if most people were entertained by the Carmella cash-in then I don't see the problem.

I don't believe this will be a long title run for Carmella, but even if it is I'll wait to see how it's booked before I judge it. She's not the best character, but she is pretty well-developed (especially by Smackdown standards) and I think she's very fun and decent in-ring.

>im starting to realize that new-school booking for "smart"

by that same token though: as great as Charlotte, her staying on the same show with the same belt beating everyone as a face could get very stagnant and boring. Whose to say the next thing they do won't be more entertaining than that?

>1)could have just had her win matches.

and then what? lose her MITB cash-in or let it expire? this was the end of a year-long storyline and the beginning of a new one. let's see where it goes.

you're not giving the audience's suspension of disbelief enough credit. people tend to boo the heels and cheer the faces even though they know it's all a work. that's not a problem unless a character is too boring or not worthy of their push. Carmella has heat cause she brags about things that aren't even that impressive (e.g. she won the briefcase and the title "by herself" which is an absolute lie)

>could have just had them win a match

against Charlotte? then you'd complain Charlotte lost. if they won a match against the other babyfaces it wouldn't give them much heat. i've been a big critic of Smackdown's booking in recent months, but this was a perfect debut for the duo and a fine cash-in for Carmella (not "perfect" just cause of the dumb ref spot).

There's many ways to build or continue the prestige of a belt and a sneaky heel getting cheap wins over really good faces counts in my book.

I wouldn't mind them keeping this feud going now, and they very well could, but I don't see any harm in saying "That was a great Chapter 1 in the story, let's wait on Chapter 2 so that there's more anticipation."

one problem (as i see it obviously) is that if Charlotte is moving to RAW after this, then its sending the message that even SHE doesnt care about the belt she lost. why would anyone care what happens to Carmella if even Charlotte doesnt want righteous retaliation? this is the problem with a total abandonment of kayfabe. the title holder was always perceived as being able to have a *better life* due to the wealth and prestige of having the title. this in turn presented the title as the absolute basis of every wrestler's ambition.

>I don't believe this will be a long title run for Carmella,

all that could be so, but a short run that hands the belt to anyone other than Charlotte or Asuka makes the whole thing even worse imo.

>

it wont be more entertaining than a belt trading trilogy with Asuka. it just wont.

>and then what? lose her MITB cash-in or let it expire? this

this is a legitmate question, but has everyone who has ever had a MITB cash-in used it successfully? follow-up, what is the success rate of MITB cash-ins turning into credible champions? these questions are what made me call it "debug mode".

>you're not giving the audience's suspension of disbelief

thats a heel archetype tho. if thats why she has heat, then its theoretocally possible for anyone to have the heat that WWE decrees they should have. it needs to be about *her*, not the archetype they assign to her. lots of bad guys do all the right things and generate no heat because no one cares about who they really are. ive known wrestling was a work since like i was like 10 years old, but i still hated the bad guys who made their personalities hateable. i didnt have to suspend my disbelief much to hate Ric Flair and Hollywood Hogan and Kevin Sullivan and Michael Hayes and even the Honky Tonk Man because they made it REALLY easy for me to believe that they were really that way as human beings. if modern audiences are willing to suspend their disbelief and boo someone strictly because they are checking the boxes off the list of heelish things to do...thats markish in every negative connotation of the word.

>against Charlotte? then you'd complain Charlotte lost. if they

no, not against Charlotte. against enough other wrestlers to give people a reason to think she *belongs*. even without watching, I knew who Asuka, Charlotte, Bliss, and Nia were, as well as a couple others. now, the day after the best women's wrestling match ive ever seen, the title is now on someone ive never heard of. its the belt thats suffering here, not any of the wrestlers...yet.

>There's many ways to build or continue the prestige of a belt
>and a sneaky heel getting cheap wins over really good faces
>counts in my book.

they cant go Honky Tonk Man with a world title. Ric Flair was cheap and dirty, but when it was time to wrestle Sting, or Lex Luger, or Ricky Steamboat he showed that he didnt NEED to be that way to be the champion. in fact, him being a credible enough wrestler thay he could have won WITHOUT cheating, is what made the cheating so hatable. he didnt *have* to, he *wanted* to. now it seems like they are kinda painted in a corner to:
A) have Asuka beat the everliving piss out of Carmella, which will harm that character, but would allow them to carry forward with Charlotte-Asuka this year with Asuka carrying "Charlotte's" belt, setting up the rematch we want.

or

B) have Carmella beat Asuka, which would make her 0-2 in title challenges (not great Bob ©)

or

C) keep Charlotte in SD and program it so that getting that title back is cast as something she would actually sell her soul for. unfortunately, everyone already suspects this is out the window.

>I wouldn't mind them keeping this feud going now, and they
>very well could, but I don't see any harm in saying "That was
>a great Chapter 1 in the story, let's wait on Chapter 2 so

abandoning a program that could have been huge and then hoping it will still be huge after times passes...is super risky.

>one problem (as i see it obviously) is that if Charlotte is
>moving to RAW after this, then its sending the message that
>even SHE doesnt care about the belt she lost.

nah, cause it's not her CHOOSING to go to Raw, it's the company saying they're moving her and others simply to shake things up. While I typically want to see someone get their rematch that doesn't break kayfabe for me.

>all that could be so, but a short run that hands the belt to
>anyone other than Charlotte or Asuka makes the whole thing
>even worse imo.

I mean I kinda assume that short run is then handing it to Asuka, but you earlier said who cares about that after her streak loss, so I'm not really sure of your point there. If you don't like Carmella and don't want her to have the belt that's fine, but I don't see this as a prestige issue and I think her character is stronger and more over than you give it credit for.

>it wont be more entertaining than a belt trading trilogy with
>Asuka. it just wont.

1) Yeah, but they can do that on Raw or at these co-brand events w/o a problem.

2) I'm talking about this w/o the superstar shakeup involved, which again, can give you exactly what you're asking for anyway. In that situation Charlotte retains at Mania, Asuka stays on Raw since she lost, and there is either no Mella cash-in or she fails in her cash-in. So yes, a sneaky heel champ getting away with shenanigans is more entertaining than Charlotte defending vs. Becky/Naomi/Natty/Riott Squad for another few months. That is what I'm describing as stagnation.

>this is a legitmate question, but has everyone who has ever
>had a MITB cash-in used it successfully?

Damien Sandow lost his cash-in to Cena, Cena lost a (pre-announced) cash-in to Punk, and Corbin lost his cash-in last fall cause the character is dumb.

follow-up, what is
>the success rate of MITB cash-ins turning into credible
>champions? these questions are what made me call it "debug
>mode".

not sure of your definition of "creidble" here but i'd say more than 50% on the below list are. Certainly Edge, Punk, DB, Orton, Rollins, and Ambrose all became credible.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_in_the_Bank_ladder_match#Cash-in_matches

>thats a heel archetype tho.

I was describing the archetype but I didn't say that was all there was to her character and I don't think everyone could pull it off. I wasn't always sold on her but she's come a long way. I still don't think you're giving enough credit to her character.

if modern
>audiences are willing to suspend their disbelief and boo
>someone strictly because they are checking the boxes off the
>list of heelish things to do...thats markish in every negative
>connotation of the word.

Again, if you don't like her that's fine, and there definitely used to be a "Eh, who cares?" feeling when she came out, but she's been getting a good response for at least a year now.

>no, not against Charlotte. against enough other wrestlers to
>give people a reason to think she *belongs*. even without
>watching, I knew who Asuka, Charlotte, Bliss, and Nia were, as
>well as a couple others. now, the day after the best women's

>never heard of. its the belt thats suffering here, not any of
>the wrestlers...yet.

she's been on TV for like 2 years now dude, how can you not know who she is and also have an opinion on her win-loss record? They have heated her up recently, but it's a pretty common device for the MITB winner to lose a bunch before the cash-in just to swerve people. She's also had the briefcase for nearly a year, and it's been a great gimmick for her that she really milked, but it was time to cash in.

>they cant go Honky Tonk Man with a world title.

1) You're assuming a lot of things about her while seemingly not knowing her which makes little sense. She's not the MOST credible champ they've ever had, but Honky Tonk? cmon man.

2) How do you know they won't book her in a way that makes her look like one of those great heels you mentioned? I don't need her to be all that, but you're judging her actual title run when she hasn't even defended yet.

>abandoning a program that could have been huge and then hoping
>it will still be huge after times passes...is super risky.

it's not "abandoning" it's just picking a different strategy. They've invested a lot of time and money into the characters of Asuka and Charlotte and they're not gonna stop now. If they stay healthy there's no reason to think WWE can't heat this feud back up again whenever they want.

I'm sure if they ran that trilogy right now it'd be hot, but there's also the chance of fatigue and I don't think it'd fit the story right now the way it seems to for AJ/Shinsuke. Just my opinion though. I'm in for that match no matter what.

The belt is meaningless in terms of whether she has it or not.

She lost it in a cheap way like most MITB losing champs do, it didn't damage her at all.

She can either go back to Raw or stay on SD and continue to be the queen. It's like when Cena wasn't champ during his peak, nobody forgot who actually was at the top of the division even when the belt was being used to promote someone else at the time.

They ended the streak so that they don't have to worry about the "what happens when Goldberg gets the belt?" scenario. Now they can just focus on Asuka being a killer who lost an excellent match to a legacy who also happens to be great.

Plus, now Carmella has the belt, on a fluke, taking advantage of someone else's dirty work. And it didn't come at the expense of the Streak (i.e. imagine the shitstorm if Asuka won just to drop the belt to the cash-in?). You have two super over white-hot faces who can chase her down, while still preserving the Asuka-Charlotte rematches for later in the year. I don't expect Mella will have an extended run a la Jinder, but it's good to occasionally have a chickenshit heel with a title to chase.

That's how you complete a heel turn with finesse.

I think this just might be a moneg feud.

I'm much more forgiving of their oddly-paced mania match right now.

Agreed. Heel Swag > United States WWE Greatest Hits Tour Swag. It really is a good call and an opportunity to build to many good things.

And getting Bryan back is a magical dragon (wink) for WWE. For the next few months, they can lazily have GMs stick him in matches with any of the grand rasslers on the roster and 20 sweet ass minutes of any show is now filled. Once he survives that, they can throw him into something heavy (aka The Miz) for Summerfest and we can have some real fun. Or...just fucking do the Miz thing all summer long and I'll take that too!

I swear I am tired of Brock eating up the main event spot and belt on Raw. From over here, he's basically dragging shit down. His existence is slowing down Finn, Seth By God Rollins, and every badass rassler on Raw that we like because none of those folks are beating Brock. To me, the roster doesn't need him.

Brock isn't doing a MOTHERFUCKING THING to save them from how shittily they've booked Roman's main event existence and that was his assumed reason for existing as an absentee champ for the last year and change. It is basically not reasonable for Roman to beat Brock without shenanigans of some kind now. Pretending to be woozy while delivering 8-ish Superman Punches/Spears isn't gonna cut it.

I am wondering who they have intended to take Brock down now if it isn't Roman+shenanigans. It should just be Strowman for my money. If he's the champ, he could be just as unbeatable as Brock except he'd actually be around to have matches more than 4-ish times a year. He'd threaten to provide someone those hands to excited crowds around the world and we'd all love it for a while. He could get some actual title matches going on Raw occasionally and he could still do his absurd shows of strength as champ. It all writes itself.

In response to Reply # 0

I've been wondering this for a while. They seem "committed" to having multiple storylines, or at least matches, with the women on each episodes of each show. The problem is, one of the two of them are usually terrible, especially on Smackdown Live. Would tag belts be an easy way to make the second storyline actually count for something?

They also have some pretty natural tag teams/stables: The Iconic Duo, Absolution, The Riott Squad (this would give both them and Absolution an actual purpose), Naomi/Becky Lynch/Charlotte?, The Welcoming Committee or whatever, Alexa Bliss/Mickie James, etc.

It seems they've gone away from this with the men in recent years but they could even have it where being involved in the tag team title picture doesn't automatically rule you out from the solo title picture. It just seems like there are a lot of fights that just kind of happen for no reason and they're wasting the talent.

Edit: And I know not every storyline needs to be tied to a title but the non-title storylines on the women's side seem especially pointless and there are plenty of solo/non-aligned workers around to not undermine the top prize.

Probably. But they need to make it matter instead of having it be a 'we don't have anything for you...tag it up!' plot device.

Their need to figure out the Raw booking so that it doesn't seem so much like 'whew! We gotta fill these 3 hours..ummmm, Sami/KO! Get out there and have a match. Yeah, the nerds will like that!'. Sometimes, matches that 'don't matter' can turn into some really fun and cool stuff. But they have to do right by those things when they happen.

Cesaro for instance. He ended up decently, but he should be sneaking into title matches sometimes and having more grand matches with some of these wrestling machine guys on the roster.

I think we are about to hit another era of factions. It could be really fun if they don't saddle too many of the factions with too many dead weight/take the pin folks.

Several women have complained already that the biggest issue in the division is that if you aren't in the title picture they don't give your story any time.

Look at how they blew a chance at Sasha vs Bayley having an epic Mania match and just didn't really let the feud boil hot enough. Now they are fighting on Raw. Hopefully it keeps going and can have a huge match at Summerslam in Brooklyn but I doubt it.

As they continue to grow the divisiont hey will either need to give it a seperate show (probably won't happen because it will feel dismissive) or invest as much time in it as the men's division on TV.

It's not far fetched to even make a womans IC level belt with how many good women wrestlers they have now. People like Peyton Royce or Mandy Rose are never going to be people who can take down Charlotte realistically, but they'd be great mid level champs. Before any of that though, they have to be willing to invest more than 20 minutes of a 3 hour show into the women's stories.

In response to Reply # 0

this goes w/o saying but Takeover stole the weekend (and I went to some really fun indie shows too). Even the match in the toughest spot imaginable (Ember/Shayna) delivered and the other title matches and Gargano/Ciampa were everything I could've hoped for. Glad to see heel Roddy is back.

Getting this out of the way: Mania was too long. That's the cloud that's gonna hang over this thing every year until they figure out something. I found myself yawning at the start of AJ/Shinsuke and that shouldn't happen.

All that said, I had a blast. The only real negative was that the Superdome was phenomenally unprepared. The lines for the bathrooms and concession stands were absolutely insane.

-The cruiserweights got a distracted crowd into it and the IC match was a perfect way to start off the main show. I mostly missed the battle royals.

-Charlotte/Asuka was hot and I'm not as down on the result as others (I think Asuka's getting her win back and am glad the streak went out with a bang rather than a whimper).

-There was some controversial booking in a lot of matches and I think they could've mitigated the reaction to that if they gave the fans a Rusev win here. Having him get pinned is just dumb.

-Cena/Taker and Braun/Nicholas were the funnest segments. Silly stuff that I couldn't get enough of. Nicholas was crazy over.

-Credit where it's due: The Rousey match was hot as hell and very well-booked. I was a critic of the program and they won me over big time.

-SD tag title match was the most forgettable. Didn't even realize how short it was till I checked wiki.

-Bryan's return was huge and he had the perfect opponents for it.

-Loved the story Alexa and Nia told here. Again, a tough spot for a women's match and they still delivered. Nia was very over here and on Raw.

-AJ/Shinsuke was definitely not the match we were expecting and it's been noted by everyone that this was where the crowd fatigue really set in. If there's one booking decision I'd change I would've had Nak turn heel in the match and steal the title. That said, I think this heel turn is huge for him and that he'll get the title eventually because of it, just would've been nice if it happened at Mania.

-I don't need to say anything about the main event other than it's the one time I've supported beachballs being tossed around.

-Raw was even more of a blast and didn't feel like 3 hours. The debuts and returns really popped the crowd. Samoa Joe may be the best promo in the company.

it's like they've never run an event before, let alone a mania just 4 years ago. I got a bag of peanuts and a water in the preshow. It took 20+ minutes and I never tried to buy anything again. No wonder every restaurant within a mile had a line around the corner afterwards.

Yeah, it was a mess on the lines. The dude I bought stuff from early in the night was confused the entire time..like he was on something. In my mind I was thinking ‘really? Popcorn and bottled water is not an exotic order/request!’ I wanted to go get into another line. I tried to grab some nachos later on in the night and yeah...dude had to walk off somewhere to get my chips and they only had cheese. The chick who was manning the booth was sure to give me the business when I asked for the chicken nachos...like I was supposed to know they didn’t have one of the 3 options for nachos. By that time they were obviously tired and carrying all sorts of attitude. It was crazy/bad. But it just seems like a bunch of the New Orleans folks are tired of hosting these types of events. I’m guessing WWE will be back again in a few years tho. Walking 15 minutes one way to the Smoothie King Center and 10 minutes the other way to the French quarter was just too damn convenient and easy!

like they had run out of half the shit already and still couldn't find the shit they did have. Every few minutes someone would emerge from the back with a couple hot dogs or a bag of nachos with a look of like "oh wow, didn't even know we had these still." They even ran out of rolls and handed plain hotdogs in tissue paper to people, and that was before the actual show started. I wasn't gonna get on the case of low-wage workers cause that's not my style and they get yelled at enough, but holy shit half of them just walked back and forth looking at stuff and not taking orders.

They want Roman to be the next Cena, the babyface who does all the make a wish events and is a hero to the kids.

They are refusing to budge on this idea, but at the same time refusing to give him the actual title and run at the top that they keep building to which is ruining him even worse.

Precisely. Vince may be the only person who doesn't realize this and he's had plenty of chances to make that correction but refuses. He sees him as Stone Cold when he'd be much more successful going the Rock route. He could turn heel for literally just a few months and everyone would be on board and he could go face again. This whole "When is he gonna get over?" conversation would be over and done with. One of the many reasons WWE needs legitimate conversation. Vince wouldn't be able to run the Roman experiment into the ground for this long if he had another company on his heels.

but now Cena is pretty much "established" a certain way, all that heat has fallen upon Roman. I agree, he needs to go the "Rock" way. He isn't nearly the talker that Cena or Rock are, and he doesn't need to be. It lends so much to being a heel that ends up being cheered for. Almost like early 2002 HHH (that period when Rock was gone, and Austin had turned into the worst kind of heel that still backfired because everyone was doing the "What" chants).

Leaving Mania I saw Bob Backlund walking in the other direction of the crowd. He was in a hurry and didn't look particularly happy, plus he's a bit crazy so I probably wouldn't stop him for a convo anyway. I quickly yelled out "Hey Backlund!" He waved his hand without looking back then patted a random child on the head. Don't think that kid knew who he was or what was going on.

Hehe. Bob is keeping kayfabe alive one incident at a time! Funny story.

I wish I would’ve run into the New Japan guys. Chaos and Tanahashi were in NOLA. Okada was chillin in an OGBC shirt at mania if pics are to be believed.

A couple of my goof troop ran into Big Cass at the airport Tuesday evening. Allegedly his knee is good to go and something is coming for him soon. Can’t teach that! And no, they didn’t ask him about Enzo.

All I got was a walk by from a clearly trying to hide Christian. Hat with his head down type of deal. He waved and kept it moving. He’s a guy that I’m surprised hasn’t managed to get cleared for some kind of light duty action. Even Bret managed to have a few ‘matches’ with no bumps or head impact. Meanwhile, Del Rio no-shows casually, gets canned, and get hired again.

Just how much money did they pay the WWE?!

They even had to call that shit the "Greatest" Royal Rumble just so you don't confuse it with the "Mediocre" Royal Rumbles from the past. Entire card feels like someone with a lot of money wanted to book a few of these matches.

Its a casket match too. We would have seen Rusev get buried, now he's removed entirely from the match. It's almost symbolic. The man has a entire day named after him, he deserves more respect.

If you know me, you know it’s not gonna be one. Hehe...

WWE could be better of course. But with NXT basically being the best Indy and WWE’s roster as is, this is a great time to like rasslin. And the WWE Network? Shiiiiid...awesome as fuck.

Enough of that for now tho. That wasn’t the thing. Here goes: I don’t want us to leave mania week without focusing on this one thing: Daniel goddamn Bryan got cleared and is on the scene working matches again. He’s not doing dumb ass suicide dives or head butts and his matches are still good. This a dream come true that could easily get lost in the mix and I don’t want that to happen. This is the ultimate in awesome and we all need to drink it in somewhere in between trying to rebook every shit Reigns angle or title change. So, drink it the fuck in! Dude gets to do this again, he’s happy as hell about it, and we get to see it happen with a bunch of badass rasslers standing in line to work with him.

I was in the middle of Mania thinking of everything that was left and I almost forgot it myself. There were so many badass moments during mania weekend that I can think about and smile right now:

- Ronda Rousey isn’t just not bad. She’s grand. Money shall be printed.
- Daniel Bryan: wrestler.
- Prince Puma jumped around like a cartoon in that ladder match. It validated the mythical stories. I already knew but it was excited to see and hear other folks find out.
- Velveteen dream. Period.
- That southern-style grudge match masterpiece between Ciampa and Jonathan Wrestling. Godly build, execution, and storytelling.
- Almas vs Black
- The overness of Alias. There were so many Alias t-shirts that I never wore mine in NOLA.
- Bray Wyatt’s career is getting saved by the Broken Brillance
- Seth by God Rollins and AJ Styles (and Feets Balor too)
- Nakamura is becoming a real character in WWE.
- The women roster is so good that 3 of the 4 horsewomen are catching hell. They now have good matches all the time and not just good for women. I never thought WWE would get there. And hopefully they’ll do right by the crew soon and get them some good stories going.
- With so many good women, Steph is basically destined to get her soccer mom-style fine ass kicked more regularly. That alone makes her character much better. Wrestling doesn’t work without heels getting Comeuppance! Ahem, Brock.
- Kurt is a shell no doubt but I love that he made it back. Jeff and Matt too.
- HHH continues to try to pay for his past sins by flopping around for everyone every year at mania.

WWE just needs to figure out their Raw main event shit and it will be the smoothest of sailing. I’m talking Ron Isley with the ponytail, cane, and spanx on the edge of a boat singing out into the ocean-level smooth sailing.

In both Kayfabe and real life

You bought front row tickets to Mania as a fan and didn't bring your fiancee to the event that you proposed at last year, AND her sister was there in the front row too!? That's bad boyfriend material

In real life, it did seem odd she wasn't there when Brie and him were both there in the audience, like there was just no reason for her not to be there....If they had just broken up or were on the verge of it then it totally makes sense.

Like lots of relationships, I assumed it was one of convenience. Once shit got difficult with them both off the wwe road, I was scurred that it was doomed. Real talk tho, I think it’s great that they didn’t go through with it just to do it. Who knows if it’s really just a Cena thing. I can’t imagine he’s not in proximity of hella pies tho. And Nikki will be fine too as long as she doesn’t race to marry some dude.

That's a downgrade if I ever saw one.

Bruh must have been crying himself to sleep after rolling around in that knowing what he had before. Amy said he was "too athletic" in the bedroom. Which translates to her just wanting to lay there and not bounce back.

She prob broke out in a sweat just getting her clothes off.

It's just a swerve because everyone assumes Rollins is going to SD now since the US title is on Raw.

Hardy will take it to SD and hopefully give Rusev a run with it.

Meanwhile Jinder can probably feud with Rollins going into Summerslam

I don’t want him to beat Brock as this character. Something has to change or they just can’t go through with this. The original finish they allegedly laid for the mania match was HORRIBLE. It would’ve been an even uglier crowd if Brock would’ve laid down for that spear after that shitty match. I’m hoping to watch it again in the next few weeks to see if it ages decently once I’m less pissy about it. I doubt it but we’ll see!

He’s a good hand and folks backstage like him. And he kinda needs to be pushed kinda heavy or folks won’t care at all. At least it wasn’t Orton. He needs to turn before Summerfest. He’s almost down to being nothing but the word ‘Glorious’ already.

Same. I kept waiting for the turn and it never happened. Smackdown got throttled down bigtime last year. It sad that they seemed to tank their own show. KO/Sami/Shane went on forever. Jinder and Orton too.

I thought it was gonna be Styles or Bryan the way they hyped it up. I'm not mad though. Raw will be easier to fast forward and Smackdown will be stacked.

It was well done, but it very much was just a book report about him. Page 1 He was born this date in this place, last page he died on this day in this place.

For everything I heard I was expecting a little more new info or footage that nobody had seen.

That being said, I'll take any main stream attention to wrestling that paints it positively in general.

They make a ton of merch money for them so I kinda doubt they go that route, but I agree they need something else (I'd love to see them freebird a singles title). The Usos feud kept them fresh this past year but that's not likely to happen again.

Decided to stick with it after the tourney to give it a fair shot and now I'm kinda going out of my way to watch it. Drake Maverick is a solid GM character. Like Regal in the sense that his personality comes across just enough but he doesn't overtake all the storylines. I'm glad Cedric finally won the title and I like badass Gulak but my favorite part has been the Lucha House Party vs. Itami/Tozawa feud. Don't think that combo of dudes is capable of having a bad match.

I'm just gonna watch the shows without overthinking who is being pushed, buried and where booking is going and just let everything unfold in front of me. I'm interested in seeing how my enjoyment of WWE and wrestling in general changes, if at all.

Hell of a show for a house show. Knew i would be fun but didn't expect it to be this good.

Highlight of the night was DREAM vs Ricochet
These dudes need a network feud like right now. Completely tore the house down.

Black vs Almas was great also.

Ciampa I'm convinced is one of the best heels in wrestling right now. Johnny's music hits, he wasn't advertised so people went crazy. Ciampa comes out and the music just stops while he belittled all of us and cheated the entire time against Kassius Ohno.

Sweet. I need to get to an NXT house show. I'd prolly wanna spring for some good seats too.

And yeah...Ciampa is balling right now. Johnny Wrestling is a helluva babyface to play off of and Psycho killer is doing his part with it.

I was in 4th row and only paid $40 I'd say it's really reasonable for the price. Got to talk to quite a few of them after the show. Candice loved the fact my daughter had a shirt of hers that WWE doesn't sell.

Ciampa's social media game is tight too. Keeping that kayfabe alive and I love it. Ricochet is going to be a mega star if they don't fuck it up once he finally goes to main. I pray Vince doesn't mess up DREAM also.

Johnny doesn't need to be on 205. They're looking at what could be one of the biggest baby faces in the company. His and Ciampa's feud needs to spark back up once they get moved. Both of them are over as fuck as face and heel. Almost makes me nervous for anyone to move up anymore.

Vince better stay the hell away from sweet sweet Velveteen. There were a lot more Dream shirts in New Orleans than I expected. AKA he's over. Not Elias over, but over.

And yeah...Puma is obvious money since he can still do so much physically insane stuff. And he looks fast doing everything: running, jumping, falling..all of it. There's no way WWE doesn't already love him.

The way Sami (and Bayley) got handled just after NXT scares me for Johnathan. KO and Sami are doing okay now I'd say, but it took a little longer than maybe it should have with them..Zayn especially. Sami was not making split roster PPVs for a while! That's a damn shame. But it seems kinda obvious that WWE will hit them up quickly when they need some good rasslers in important-ish spots. WWE just trusted them to go out their with Bryan before rolling to Miz and Friends. Now I'm hoping like hell that Cass doesn't get too excited with Daniel one random night. If he somehow hurts DB, he could just retire.

there are so many great high-flyers out there today but there's just something a little different about the way Ricochet does it that keeps you transfixed. He makes look like so effortless while doing stuff only a handful of people are able to do.

in an NXT show and I've never been mad about the money I spent. I've had cheap seats and good ones and it's always an incredible time. Besides seeing your favorites there's always 1 or 2 newer wrestlers at every show who surprise you with moves you didn't think were in their arsenal.

In response to Reply # 0

I'm torn cause I don't know how major this event is or if anyone cares and I feel like half the people here won't bother with picks (or won't get around to them by noon on Friday) and that's a bad starting point for the predictions, but if there's interest I'll do it. BTW, I did a prize for the past year but I'm not sure I will be able to this year so it may not matter. That was kind of a "cleaning out the house before I move and here's some wrestling stuff!" thing last year so this one will be just for fun.

It's weird to me that they haven't announced a prize for the Rumble winner yet. That's throwing me off and seems like it would be a better hook than anything else they've thrown at it so far.

I'd say SPOILERS but I doubt anyone here was planning on catching it.

If you haven't followed the drama: Del Rio was fired after no-showing the Impact/Lucha event at Mania week so they transformed that night's main event into an Aries/Fenix/Pentagon triple threat. Fantastic match so they ran it back last night for the title and Pentagon won. I think it's a smart move to get some new eyes on the product. I know I'm gonna start tuning in and will probably even order last night's show too.

cringeworthy for different reasons, but every time I see an unprotected chair shot to the head my mind immediately goes to Benoit.

It's how the women are there almost exclusively as objects of sexual innuendo and to oogle at.

that interview seemed scripted and he did seem nervous taking that angle so I wouldn't be surprised if he has regrets. He's a pretty liberal guy. Mark Henry did say as much in his Table for 3 though so it's not exactly a lie.

Good lord. And they even would zoom in on the ones about Shawn Michaels and you know what they all said.

The chair shots were bad but the blatant racism/homophobia makes me embarrassed to show people who weren't into wrestling back then.

In response to Reply # 249

Brian Pillman pulled a gun on Steve Austin... a fuckin gun! That entire segment was memorable.

Golddust giving Ahmed Johnson mouth to mouth while he was on the stretcher and obviously didn't need it. My mans woke up to gold face paint around his mouth and went THEE fuck off.

DX and their shenanigans.

I could go on for days, but its memorable because they were doing shit that was unbelievable at the time. You had to tune in each week just to see what would happen next. Looking back on it now it was straight cringe, but I realize I'm looking at it as an older cat now. Younger me just wanted to see something extreme and try to catch some titties (puppies). It got to a point when I was getting a tad bit older and my thought processes changed to "god damn why can't they just let them wrestle and not play in the mud so much". I started gettin ass around that age though so I saw no need for bra and pantie matches.

Wrestling was wild as hell.
