Transgender boy wins girls’ state wrestling title for second time
By Associated Press February 25, 2018 | 1:44am

CYPRESS, Texas — For the second year in a row, a transgender wrestler has won the Texas girls’ Class 6A 110-pound division.

Mack Beggs, an 18-year-old senior from Euless Trinity High School near Dallas, entered the tournament in Cypress outside of Houston with an undefeated record. He beat Chelsea Sanchez — who he beat for the title in 2017 — in the final match Saturday.

Beggs is in the process of transitioning from female to male and taking a low-dose of testosterone.

It was his steroid therapy treatments while wrestling girls that stirred a fierce debate about competitive fairness and transgender rights last season. It’s been a lot quieter since last year when his march to a state championship was dogged by a last-minute lawsuit that tried to stop him.

Beggs had asked to wrestle in the boys’ division, but the rules for Texas public high schools require athletes to compete under the gender on their birth certificate.

Beggs entered the state tournament with a 32-0 record, beating three female wrestlers on his way to the championship.

“He has so much respect for all the girls he wrestles,” said Beggs’ mother, Angela McNew. “People think Mack has been beating up on girls … The girls he wrestles with, they are tough. It has more to do with skill and discipline than strength.”

McNew would not make Beggs available for interviews ahead of the state meet. The solitude allowed him to concentrate on the task ahead and perhaps shield him from attacks on social media and occasional insults from the stands — or even other wrestling mats — during meets.

Beggs’ road to the championship last season included two forfeits in the regional tournament by wrestlers who feared injury. Beggs faced only one forfeit this season. The opposing coach and teammates had insisted the girl wrestle Beggs, but she refused, McNew said.

Beggs’ family has repeatedly said he wants to wrestle boys. The birth certificate rule was approved in 2016 by the University Interscholastic League, the governing body for Texas high school sports. It was done to help schools determine competition, said Jamie Harrison, the UIL’s deputy director.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

i thought dude was just beating up on girls for easier competition. but he is pretty much being forced to (aside from just quitting wrestling).

still kinda weird to be able to compete while on exogenous testosterone tho. dude got that old ufc trt exemption shit going.

Chances are that most of the people boo'ing this person are anti-LGBT rights so this probably just give them incentive to mask their prejudice.

People should consider this: do you really think a person would turn trans just to compete in wrestling? Highly unlikely. Also - when a person goes through gender transformation they do alter their biological makeup and often stop producing many of the hormones within the body that designate "male" or "female" characteristics.

A person interested in wrestling as a boy should still be able to pursue it as a girl. I do see why some see it as somewhat of an unfair advantage - but it's a new world. What are we going to have - a trans league of athletics? They should be integrated into sports and I'm glad they have the opportunity to compete.

first, that's hugely presumptuous to assume most people there are anti-trans. Maybe they're pro-fairness?

Not really the kid's fault, it's the state's fault. But a high-school-aged dude at that weight is *far* stronger than a high-school-aged female at that weight = not safe and not fair. This dude is literally being allowed to take PEDs and compete at an amateur level against females.

He should wrestle dudes. It's that simple.

>first, that's hugely presumptuous to assume most people there

it is presumptuous but I would be interested in polling them to see if they were pro LGBT rights/equality. What fairness/equality that looks like in the realm of sports & trans-athletes does need to be addressed - because as I stated I do see a legitimate concern with regards to fairness. However, to me that doesn't mean you just carte-blanche ban trans-athletes from competing. We should be working to integrate trans athletes into sports leagues.

>Not really the kid's fault, it's the state's fault. But a

Yea - if this athlete is allowed to take PEDs then that's absurd. Regardless of whether a person wants to undergo the trans-gender therapy/medication - they are assuming the risk of being ineligible of competing *if* they have banned substances present in them while competing.

IMO it’s unfortunate but I think you have to tap out of sports if you take roids in HS.

Failure on the athletic commission and state's sport to not enforce the anti-banned substance provision.

My point was more targeted towards the general inclusion of trans-athletes within sports -- but in this situation I agree with not allowing *any* athlete to compete while knowing they have a banned substance coursing through their body.

but wrestling is all about strength and quickness and all that testosterone gives him a huge advantage.

I would be furious if my daughter reached the finals 2 years in a row and lost to this guy.

I guess it’s a “welcome to the real world” momennt for the girl who lost but damn.

I’m not anti but I feel like if you are transitioning you have to take this into consideration. I feel bad either way tho because if Texas let’s him wrestle against boys and he gets broke in half then it’s a bad look. Ionno.

I would probably have to put my transition on hold or just not wrestle beucause why would I want to fight girls now that I’m a dude?

What happened with the dude who transitioned to a woman and used to beat up other women in UFC or MMA? I always thought that was weird as shit. You became a woman to whoop their ass?

Participation trophies are one thing. Which im not even opposed to at all, but can see the argument.

But the people who shoot up schools dont do so because they got participation trophies and then had that kind of recognition taken away

uhh...do you all know how many people are "on roids" for medical reasons?

Taking testosterone for this reason under medical supervision is just a touch different than taking it to get swole, ffs. Both in rationale and in amount/method/outcome.

texas allows medical exemptions for steroid use. Which leaves one in the position of arguing whether or not transitioning from female-to-male under the supervision of a doctor is a valid reason for a medical exemption.

Easy fix - let him compete against dudes, and this all disappears and no one gives a shit.

i have no qualms with people and their personal preferences, but the rules governing amateur athletics are clear and steroids are not allowed.

I don't think in this case that it would have given the athlete any great advantage when wrestling in the boys division, but i can see how you would run into issues when deciding what exceptions you would allow for steroid use. So a transitioning female-to-male athlete obviously needs testosterone to make the transition, but what about teenage male with low testosterone? Is that fair that a male is then allowed to take steroids? Related - i did wrestle on a team with a kid who was hella short, and his parents had him on HGH, which is a PED, to help him grow, and he was allowed to compete. He was still a shitty wrestler, but i guess that's beside the point.

I lean towards just letting this individual compete vs. boys, and calling it a day. dude wasn't winning state in teh boys division, and this probably would have been a non-issue and no one would have cared. Texas being Texas, had to be dicks about it and make it a weird indictment on Trans people by making him wrestle girls, though.

*edit* it is important to note that steroid use is allowed for high school athletes in Texas, otherwise they wouldn't have allowed him to compete. They allow athletes to compete when taking steroids for a valid medical reason, under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Children take all kinda of medications and "drugs" at many different ages, administered by trained professionals and with parental consent.

What this has to do with recreational drug use is anyone's guess.

You didn't ask a question, you said your mind was "boggled" by the fact that teenagers take powerful medications but cannot drink beer.

I pointed out how there was nothing that odd about it in today's society at all. Or yesterday's for that matter. Lots of kids are sitting in class with steroid inhalers. The real issue for you in the the reason this child is taking medication, because you have some issue with transgendered people.

In the English language a "?" at the end of a sentence denotes a question.

I have an issue with transgendered men on steroids wrestling girls.

Do people not realize that a biological female on a low dose of testosterone is "on steroids" to the same extent that a teenage boy is. Obviously an issue if they are going to wrestle girls, but should hardly be a problem for them to wrestle boys. Both parties are going to be operating at comparable testosterone levels and honestly, the biological boys will have an advantage if anything.

This is about Texas being too dumb to let this child wrestle with the boys

the dosages that athletes typically take for performance-enhancing purposes are on the order of tens/hundreds of times greater than what's prescribed in transgender hormone therapy.

The funny part is how desperately you pretend it isn't about what it is about.

Why do you keep asking for medical specifics from me? If I give you an answer will you believe me? And if not , then why don't you go look it up? This is not some totally unknown things, people have been undergoing testosterone therapy for a long time. I'm sure you could find out, if you actually cared.

But since you asked, here is your answer-

HRT doses of testosterone are much lower than the typical doses taken by steroid-using athletes, and create testosterone levels comparable to those of most cisgender men. These levels of testosterone have not been proven to cause more aggression than comparable levels of estrogen. It is assumed that the effect of the start of physical treatment is such a relief, and decreases pre-existing aggression so much, that the overall level of aggression actually decreases.

So in other words NO, you don't know, that's something you googled. The article linked only say says Mack Beggs was taking a "low dose of testosterone". There are no specifics about exactly what he is taking or how much. A "low dose" of any kind of drug could be a high dose for the next person.

You're talking out of your ass like normal.

We DON'T know how much testosterone the person in question is taking (along with any other drugs).

The issue is that there isn't some firm delineation between a physiological and supraphysiolgical dose/blood level. Likewise there isn't a firm cutoff as to what moves into the realm of performance enhancing. The 'normal' reference range for the T level of a male of any age is going to be huge. And dose response isn't an exact science. Two people can take the same dosage and metabolize the drug very differently yielding very different blood levels. It's very difficult to replicate a 'normal' output of testosterone production via supplementation. And again, it's almost impossible to define what a normal output is in a healthy male. I'm guessing this is at least part of the reason why sports governing bodies ban medical TRT across the board because there's just too much gray area here.

I would say it's pretty much impossible for anyone to prove or disprove that the person in question has derived any type of performance enhancement from their hormone therapy.

so why wouldn't they allow it for a transitioning female taking steroids to compete against boys?

I see your point though, and this is exactly why the UFC and other professional sports leagues have decided not to allow TRT exemptions. It's a tangled fuckin rabbit hole to go down.

it's not like legit physicians are passing testosterone out to high schoolers like they are middle aged men.

and assuming the HS's arent drug testing im not even sure why your testosterone prescription would need to be disclosed to anyone.

The person in question is a biological female though. Whatever performance enhancement they are getting is not going to make them stronger than boys of the same age.

Also, this is high school sports, not the Olympics. Having taught and coached in schools before, the point of youth sports is not to provide a perfectly even playing field, but to give kids opportunities to participate and benefit from sporting.

You have some boys who are too old for the JV team but clearly have not physically developed enough for the varisty team they are trying out for. You have girls who have been playing basketball their whole lives on teams with girls who are still figuring out how to shoot the ball. It's not some exact science. But here we can see that this is not fair to the girls, and also not far to the kid who WANTS to wrestle the boys. Any educator with sense would have this kid wrestle with the boys. That's what he wants to do. That is also what would be more equitable for the girls. There are no losers in that scenario. If they start whupping all the boys and bench-pressing cars after practice, then you can move on to wondering if that is unfair.

My guess is that wouldn't happen. How do I know this? This isn't the first transman in history, so far I haven't seen too many of them using their "low-dose testosterone" given powers to take over men's sports, so I'm calling bullshit on this creating some new problem.

If your argument is that biological women taking testosterone are going to be operating at a level that makes it unfair to men…I'm going to need some convincing, or historical precedent.

I'm not even sure what you're talking about. She's competing against females so why are we talking about it being unfair to men?

Furthermore, all I said was that we don't know anything about her drugs, dosages, etc. and therefore cannot speculate on whatever performance enhancing effects were derived.

I said nothing about fairness one way or the other.

Why would any of us know with any specificity what he's on?

He doesn't have to reveal that to anybody except whoever sanctions and regulates high school sports where he lives. And they should be able to get data on what is or isn't a reasonable dosage for someone undergoing his kind of treatment from many different places.

But my guess is they don't want to know, because they've taken an ideological position rather than a scientific one.

This really shouldn't even be a controversy. This issue has been solved by science but it's only a controversy for those that want see it only from an ideological position.

by saying you don't understand how being on roids isn't a disqualifier.

People have been trying to explain to you how it might be but then you moved the goal posts by asking people "well how do you know how much he's taking?"

We don't need to know his details to understand that there are boys and transgender boys competing while taking testosterone and different organizations have figured out how to properly regulate it.

With all the controversy around him, you'd think the school system (in Texas of all places) would've already disqualified him by now on the basis of taking testosterone. He's been undefeated 2 years and they KNOW he's been taking testosterone the ENTIRE TIME.

That signals, to me, they have regulations on this and he's compliant. I don't know for sure but that would sure be an easy way to have legally ended this controversy a long time ago.
