In the end he will either go to a team with some established pieces (Milwaukee, Philly) or go to the team that will give him carte blanche to build a roster from nothing, which the Lakers might do. Pretty funny that the team is playing well and gets a great win over a rival and you're pushing the goalposts back. 'GENDAS!

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

So yes, better...especially defensively. BI is a key part of it, Josh is a key part of it, team defense is a huge part of it.

Lolz at your stupid binary comments and then trying to create some sort of “disrespect”. You’re like the Hines Ward of OKS right now, frightening level of insecurity.

Already a huge jump...then you consider that we’re the youngest team in the league, it’s an incredible jump.

Rob, Magic, Luke, and staff have laid the foundation that you have to be committed to the game and your team...the culture continues to shift, these guys continue to buy-in, and now we’re starting to install more offensive sets as well.

We’re on the way

In response to Reply # 5

There's really not a lot of major players in FA for this season, and if they are they don't have the most attractive situations (like a DAL or PHX).

It's a small thing, but I also appreciated how Nance/Clarkson knew about the trade ahead of the news breaking (vs like Blake). I got the warm feels when I heard they picked #8 and #24 as their numbers.

No surprise considering the pure class in which Rob and Magic have ran their prior organizations. They get it - every level and detail has to be top class.

This is why exaggerating and conflating arguments is stupid. Because Orbit will go further and also argue, "Luke sucks" before there's any evidence either way. Whereas the true point is it doesn't matter whether or not Luke sucks, it matters that he's given more time to improve, and to prove he doesn't suck.

I want black coaches to get the *SAME* chances.

Black coaches who started like Luke are branded
"unintelligent" and never given good chances again.
They are *never* judged on "potential"

White coaches are *allowed* to be shitty and *learn*
on the job.

I mean,

Brett Brown appears to be a *fine* coach for the 76ers.

He was *allowed* to have that job through their tanking
and horrific record. He was *allowed* to have their
terrible-ness pardoned. He WILL BENEFIT from that faith.

Black coaches DO NOT get those chances.

That is how racism works. The point is not that Brett Brown
is a terrible person. The point is that black coaches don't
get those *same* opportunities.

LOL.

We still gotta have these Fisher Price Racism 101
conversations?

STILL?

Do you guys really not understand racism, at all?

Or are you really this unintelligent?

The issue is not about how I think coaches should
be treated in the *abstract*

It is the *disparity* and *double standards*

Byron Scott was, ON THIS SITE, denigrated and critiqued for
his lack of understanding.

His past successes with the Nets were de-valued ("the East
was weak") and his flaws were inflated.

Scott was not a worse coach with the Lakers than D'Antoni
was. D'Antoni's NEXT head coaching job was with a top 4 seed
in the WEST lead by an MVP candidate...who then ADDED a top 5
all-time point guard.

It is Byron Scott's inability to get THAT type of job that is
puzzling. Same with Mike Brown. And Mike Woodson. And many,
many, others.

And let's not even TALK about the mid-season FIRINGS THIS
SEASON. LOL.

I'm not advocating that Walton be fired, but if the criteria is Mike Brown after x games, then Walton should've been gone a while ago.

Not to mention Fizdale and Kidd were both fired mid-season. Why does Walton get to stay then?

NYK is not exactly primed for big things but he gets a young group and a bridge year, basically anything he does will be gravy this year and maybe the following year, too. In Memphis things were deteriorating very quickly and only got worse. Kidd was a weird one. You get the sense he is not a very endearing person, although that isn't really a job qualification. Another way to look at it is that he had high standards and the team wasn't performing to them. I think Budenholzer will do all right there, though the team kind of lacks direction. They seem to be endlessly shuffling the deck around Giannis.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I liked Mike Brown over every other coach until Luke. I look at other decisions the old ownership and management made and it makes more sense why they would stupidly let go of Mike Brown 5 games in, and why new ownership and management stick with something they know will work if given time.

Of course, but that's under the assumption that black and
white people are given criteria for success.

Because he's white. Having a famous name doesn't hurt,
though his dad was a drug using babbling idiot for years,
not exactly a bastion of high IQ.

He knows less about basketball than Draymond, by
miles.

Kerr is a genius for setting a good environment for the
PERSONALITIES, not because of basketball IQ.

Kerr always keeps a smart head assistant:

He's won rings with Alvin Gentry (who build the offense),
and Mike Brown (who built the defense)

Spurs down 1 with 14 seconds left: Pop draws up a brilliant two-way action scheme with Aldridge & Mills - and they execute and get a wide open look to win the game.

Lakers down 1 with 7 seconds left: No set at all. Just Bron one on one to shoot a shot he makes only 32% of the time. They had enough time to run a set - should've been running that set in practice/pre-season to test/experiment etc..

... which is fair. I've defended Luke as much as anyone here but expectations come with Lebron. That hasn't changed then and I wouldn't expect it to change now.

His rotations were severely questionable last year and they were horrible when Rondo came off suspension. I do like how he played the starters most of the game against Dallas though, last couple minutes notwithstanding.

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1058394511645253637

Sources: After a winless two-game trip, Magic Johnson's meeting with Luke Walton on Tuesday reverberated throughout the Lakers organization. The pressure's on the coach to win sooner than later.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/25156914/magic-johnson-admonishes-luke-walton-los-angeles-lakers-slow-start

Sources: Luke Walton takes heat from Magic Johnson for Lakers' start

In a meeting on Tuesday, following a winless two-game trip, Los Angeles Lakers president Magic Johnson admonished coach Luke Walton for the team's sluggish start to the season, league sources told ESPN.

Johnson's cutting appraisal elevated an already acute awareness within the Lakers coaching staff that there are intense and immediate pressures on Walton to deliver the franchise a winner in short order.

Despite Johnson's prior proclamations of needing to allow time for Walton to develop a young roster surrounding four-time MVP LeBron James, evidence is mounting that Walton's job security ultimately depends upon his ability to significantly improve upon a 3-5 record to start the season.

Johnson's aggressive meeting tone circulated to individuals throughout the organization, including to principal owner Jeanie Buss, league sources said. Throughout his tenure with the Lakers, Johnson has earned an internal reputation for an oftentimes volatile management style, including with his handling of Walton and the coaching staff, sources said.

Buss' support for Walton has remained unwavering since Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka assumed command of basketball operations in 2017.

Walton was hired by her brother, Jim Buss, and ex-general manager Mitch Kupchak less than a year before Johnson and Pelinka took over.

One of the greatest players in the history of the game, Johnson's business interests often lead him to be traveling away from the team. Johnson relies on Pelinka to run the day-to-day of basketball operations and offer reports and analysis up to him.

Luke Walton's Lakers are off to a 3-5 start after revamping their roster in the offseason and dealing with suspensions to two starters. Brad Rempel/USA TODAY Sports
Those invested in Walton's Laker staying power felt a wave of relief once Dallas' frantic comeback fell short in the Lakers' 114-113 victory at Staples on Wednesday. In the wake of Johnson's chiding, the prospect of riding a three-game losing streak into this weekend's games -- away at Portland and then the second of a back-to-back against surging Toronto -- loomed to those on the staff, league sources said.

The Lakers' slow start includes the absences of two starters, forward Brandon Ingram and guard Rajon Rondo, to suspensions of four and three games, respectively. Guard Lonzo Ball began training camp on a minutes restriction following offseason knee surgery.

The free-agent arrival of James has intensified expectations surrounding the roster. James has a history of clashing with coaches upon arriving in free agency, including with Miami's Erik Spoelstra and Cleveland's David Blatt -- but there have been no signs of James' disapproval with Walton. While the Blatt relationship never gained traction, James and Spoelstra built a partnership that led to two NBA titles and four Finals appearances.

So far, James has been publicly and privately supportive of Walton.

In the preseason, Johnson implored patience for his team and coach. While the Lakers have a talented roster of young players surrounding James, a cast of limited veteran role players have struggled defensively.

"As I was talking to Luke , we said, 'Don't worry about if we get out to a bad start,'" Johnson told reporters in September. "We have seen that with LeBron going to Miami, and we have seen that when he came back to Cleveland. He is going to struggle because there are so many new moving parts. But eventually we are going to get it, and we are going to be a really good team."

One area of discontent among some Lakers' veterans is Walton's repeated shuffling of lineups. Nevertheless, James rationalized Walton's approach to the roster in the wake of the victory over Dallas on Wednesday.

"I think Luke's trying to figure out what works best," James said. "We knew it was going to be like that from the summer when 'Zo had the knee surgery. We knew we were going to have a lineup change there. Obviously, we had the unexpected one when we had the suspensions, so we had a lineup change there....

"We'll get to a point where we know how comfortable we need to be with different lineups."

What's more, James is still working himself back into elite playing condition.

Across the first seven games of the regular season, the Lakers have utilized 93 different lineups, behind only the Atlanta Hawks' 122, according to research by ESPN Stats & Info.

LeBron James is reportedly ignoring Luke Walton's play calls to nobody's surprise

Ben Rohrbach Yahoo Sports Nov 28, 2018, 3:05 PM

Entering LeBron James’ free agency, multiple reports indicated his desire to play off the ball more in his new contract. When he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, James praised Lonzo Ball and endorsed Rajon Rondo, the two pass-first point guards who would be responsible for his supposed adjustment. Come training camp, James went so far as to say this relinquishment of duties was “key for our team.”

This was all ridiculous, of course, because James is one of the two greatest players in basketball history, primarily as a direct result of his ability to control the game, and there was no way he was ever going to cede that stewardship to Ball or Rondo when it came actually to winning time.

Now, six weeks into his debut season with the Lakers, not only is James serving as the team’s lead facilitator, he is ignoring coach Luke Walton’s offensive direction, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst:

The scouts also have noticed that when James is running the point, he rarely looks toward the bench to receive play calls from coach Luke Walton. Even when he has seen them, the scouts say, he ignores them and runs the play he prefers. Walton has adjusted, and now when James is running the show, Walton will typically just let him call the game. This probably shouldn’t be considered a slight — it’s just James being James.

This is par for the course for James, who has usurped his coach’s command at every stop, with the possible exception of the Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra (only after Pat Riley ignored calls for his firing). And who can blame him? His ball dominance has produced eight straight NBA Finals appearances and three championship rings. He is one of the game’s great passers, and his encyclopedic knowledge of every defensive tactic ever thrown at him over 16 seasons exceeds most, if not all, active coaches.

James leads all Lakers in usage rate (30.4 percent), time of possession (5.6 minutes per game) and time per touch (4.27 seconds), as it should be for a four-time MVP without another All-Star at his side.

We should point out that the Lakers owned a top-10 offense before Rondo suffered a broken hand on Nov. 14, and the team has dipped to 26th in that regard in six games since the injury. This period of time, which features a 3-3 record, coincides with an uptick in LeBron’s overall control of the offense.

It’s got to be frustrating if you’re Walton, trying to steer a team when the player who all your developing talents are looking to for guidance is straight-up ignoring you. That this falls on the heels of reports that Lakers players are “discontent” with Walton’s lineups and team president Magic Johnson “admonished” the coach for their poor start is not a ringing endorsement of his authority.

This is the reason the Cleveland Cavaliers were left without an offensive system without James, to the point that Tyronn Lue was fired for failing to revamp his offense immediately upon losing LeBron. Such is the deal one makes when he signs on to coach a notoriously controlling superstar, I suppose.

But at least we know a Lebron isothree feet out from the 3pt line then taking a contested jumpshot isn't a playcall from the bench.

The LeFuckYouThree is hilarious to watch, but it's not exactly an offense we want to run.

- No idea why Lonzo was benched for the entire 4th against Orlando
- Hoping to see a starting lineup change tomorrow night, but not because of a Lonzo injury

but his rotations are easily the worst in the league. Lakers have lost at least 2-5 games simply because of Luke's rotations. Up 20+ on the Pacers, and Bron sits for 6 mins in the 2nd while Indiana comes back? Every single game Luke fucks up the rotations. Maybe Brian Shaw could do better. Maybe not, but Luke is not the coach for this team.

i just know i wanted Luke to succeed, but he's proven to be awful, and the Lakers will not win anything major with him. only thing keeping his job intact still, is the Lakers are playing decently in spite of his obviously bad flaws, but imagine this team with a competent coach....

Phil Jackson makes surprise visit to Lakers' practice facility
4:29 PM CT
Ohm Youngmisuk
ESPN Staff Writer

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Phil Jackson made a surprise visit to the Los Angeles Lakers' practice facility Wednesday.

It was the first time Jackson has been seen by the media at the facility over the past two seasons. The team said the former head coach just stopped by.

Lakers coach Luke Walton, who has kept in touch with Jackson and at times solicits advice from his mentor, said he didn't know his former coach was at the facility until media members pointed at Jackson, who was seated in a balcony above the court.

"I have not talked to Phil today, no, but if that's him, I'll head upstairs," Walton said. "... Even the one year I semi-retired, Phil's someone I like to stay in constant communication with."

Jackson still has several ties to the organization. Lakers controlling owner and governor Jeanie Buss posted a photo of her having dinner with Jackson, Kurt Rambis and his wife, Linda, in Manhattan Beach in early November.

Rambis rejoined the organization in September as a senior basketball adviser to Magic Johnson, president of basketball operations.

It was not known whether Jackson had any interaction with LeBron James.

Jackson once used the word "posse" when talking about James and his business partners in a 2016 interview with ESPN. In response, James said he and his partners were offended and disappointed as African-Americans by the use of the word to describe them.

17 turnovers against one the dregs of the league, in what should have been among the more disciplined games of the season after the Pelicans debacle.

I’ve never seen a coach this oblivious to which players and lineups are playing well and which aren’t. Tonight with Rondo to start the 4th was the most egregious example I’ve seen in my life.

The all bench lineups have been trash all year, he keeps playing them.

All the vets have negative net ratings, they not only play but get more minutes than Bullock and Muscala who have been good.

Refuses to stagger BI and Bron. Look at the team’s net ratings with one of them on vs both off.

It’s the same patterns and mistakes as nauseum. He talks about earning minutes, learning from mistakes yet it’s all just noise. He has some very good qualities but it’s all undermines by not being able to make clear-eyed decisions in-game. That’s such a priority quality for a good head coach.

what a trash season.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2825018-lakers-rumors-magic-johnson-ignored-pleas-to-re-sign-brook-lopez-julius-randle

Lakers Rumors: Magic Johnson Ignored Pleas to Re-Sign Brook Lopez, Julius Randle
Scott Polacek
March 11, 2019

Los Angeles Lakers' Julius Randle, left, and Brook Lopez watch the closing moments of the Lakers 113-102 loss to the Sacramento Kings in an NBA basketball game Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017, in Sacramento, Calif. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)
Rich Pedroncelli/Associated Press

Brook Lopez and Julius Randle are enjoying productive seasons for the Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans, respectively, but the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching staff reportedly wanted President of Basketball Operations Magic Johnson to keep them in purple and gold.

According to Bill Oram of The Athletic, Johnson "ignored the pleas of the coaching staff that he retain" the two bigs following the signing of LeBron James and instead added JaVale McGee, Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson.

The report comes amid speculation surrounding the future of head coach Luke Walton, with Oram noting that firing Walton "would cause considerable heartburn for officials within the organization who, according to team sources, continue to advocate for him."

The pair of frontcourt players surely would have helped a Lakers team that is among the league's most disappointing this season. Even with James leading the way, Los Angeles is a mere 30-36 and 7.5 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with just 16 games remaining.

The playoffs are an absolute long shot at best at this point, but that may not have been the case with Lopez and Randle instead of the journeymen Johnson turned toward.

Lopez is averaging 12.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game for the Bucks and is shooting a career-best 36.7 percent from deep. He would be an ideal big to play with James because his ability to extend his game beyond the arc would provide floor spacing for the King to either attack the basket or kick out for open looks.

His rim protection would also bolster a Lakers defense that is an ugly 23rd in the league in defensive rating in the last 10 games, per NBA.com.

As for Randle, he is averaging 20.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for the Pelicans as a constant double-double threat who appears to have a bright future at 24 years old.

Unless Johnson and the Lakers are able to add marquee pieces this offseason before James turns 35 years old in December, they do not share that bright future in the loaded Western Conference.

sure he's putting up numbers in New Orleans but their record is worse than the Lakers.

Defensively Randle is still a tweener, not quick enough to defend perimeter guys and not long enough to be an effective defender in the post. And offensively he's good but still gets lot of dumb offensive foul calls trying to do too much.

Fox is good but honestly I think he would be as underutilized as Ball is playing with Bron.

I agree about Thomas Bryant. I don't think Luke liked him for whatever reason.
