Paul Pierce: Celtics' guilt over trading Isaiah Thomas is why they tried to honor both on same night
play

LOS ANGELES -- Paul Pierce dreamed of playing his entire career with the Boston Celtics. When that didn't transpire, and the team dealt him, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013 for a treasure trove of draft picks, he began dreaming instead of the day the Celtics would raise his No. 34 to the rafters.

That day is Feb. 11 -- and he will not be sharing it with anyone else.

Plans to show a brief video tribute to Isaiah Thomas, who was traded to Cleveland last August, have been scrapped after Pierce told Celtics head of basketball operations Danny Ainge he preferred to have that day to himself.

"Danny and I talked about it for 40 minutes," Pierce explained to ESPN early Tuesday afternoon. "He told me, 'This is what we have planned,' and at the end of the conversation, he said, 'If you don't want us to do Isaiah, we won't.' So I told him, 'I really don't.' So that was it.

"That's how we left it."

Shortly after ESPN reached out to Ainge to confirm this development, Thomas tweeted that he preferred Boston not run a video tribute for him after all.

Isaiah Thomas

@isaiahthomas
I'd like to thank the Celtics for their gracious offer to play a video tribute on Feb 11th celebrating my 3yrs in Boston. But since it appears this has caused some controversy w/ Paul Pierce's night I'd ask the Celtics instead to focus all of their attention on #34's career.

Earlier in the day, before Thomas' tweet, Pierce explained why he objected to plans to honor Thomas on Feb. 11.

"(Thomas) had a shot to be honored," Pierce said. "You came to Boston. Whether you are playing or not, you should have had your tribute then. I just don't see how, if someone is having a jersey retirement, they're going to be running other tributes for other players.

"Danny tried to sell me on it, but I told him, 'He had a shot, Danny, and he punked you on it. He pretty much dictated everything.' They let it happen because they felt sorry how (the trade to Cleveland) went down. It's guilt. That's what it is."

Ainge said Tuesday night that Thomas intended all along to bow out of the video tribute once he learned of Pierce's reservations. He also said when he and Thomas' agent, Aaron Goodwin, first discussed an alternate date for a Thomas tribute, which was originally scheduled for Jan. 3, neither of them realized the next time the Cavaliers came to town would be the night that Pierce was being honored. Thomas asked not to be recognized on Jan. 3 because he was not going to be playing in the game and he wanted his family present for the tribute.

"I wanted to make it clear that it was never my intention or Isaiah's intention to take away from the special day for Paul Pierce," Ainge told ESPN. "And no one was ever comparing I.T. to Paul Pierce. We all owe Paul a lot. Everyone in the organization."

Ainge said the team planned to play the Thomas tribute during the pregame introductions.

"It was only going to be during that segment," Ainge explained. "During the rest of the game, it was going to be all Paul Pierce. But, after listening to Paul's perspective, I understood it and shared it with Isaiah and he understood it, too."

Rajon Rondo, a member of Boston's 2008 title team with Pierce, expressed dissatisfaction when told of the Celtics' plan to also honor Thomas.

"What has done?" Rondo said before Tuesday's game, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. When told how Thomas led Boston to the East finals, Rondo replied, "Oh, that's what we celebrate around here?"

Rondo, now of the Pelicans, later added: "This is the Boston Celtics. This isn't the Phoenix Suns. No disrespect to any other organization but don't hang conference titles."

New Orleans' Tony Allen, who played alongside Pierce on Boston's 2008 championship team, said prior to Tuesday's game that Pierce deserved his own night.

"I'm with Pierce, man," said Allen. "(Thomas) didn't put in more work than Paul. Anybody disagree? OK. Paul Pierce put in big work, man. Why would they honor (Thomas) on that same day, man?

"Let my man get his jersey retired, man. Let him embrace that, man. He put a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this organization, man, and capitalized and had some good results. (Pierce) struggled with the team. I remember losing 19 straight with that man. Turned around and won a championship (the next season). Talk about Paul Pierce, man, don't mention (Thomas') name, the guys' name that don't stand in the same frame."

Pierce conceded that he gave his position some additional thought after his objections to a joint tribute made headlines. He says he consulted his agent, his wife, his mother and Garnett.

"Everyone understood where I was coming from," Pierce said. "KG was like, 'Isaiah who? Hell no, you're damn right you're not sharing your night with him.'"

That is no longer a concern.

"We owe Paul a lot," Ainge said. "I feel indebted to him. The whole organization feels that way. We will have a great night for him. Argument over."

3 truths about Paul Pierce’s Celtics tribute brouhaha

The Boston Celtics will not interrupt The Truth’s big night with a tribute video for Isaiah Thomas.

By Tom Ziller@teamziller Jan 17, 2018, 1:27pm EST

Paul Pierce won.

Everyone laughed and ripped off jokes about Pierce’s Jan. 4 declaration that the Celtics shouldn’t briefly interrupt the night of his jersey retirement in Boston to honor Isaiah Thomas. But Pierce stuck to his guns. On Tuesday, we found out the Celtics will not show an Isaiah tribute video, instead focusing all attention on The Truth.

The Celtics had originally intended to show the Isaiah tribute video — a standard NBA laurel for All-Stars traded away — when the Cavaliers visited Boston on Jan. 3. That was derailed when Thomas — then just having made his season debut — asked them to delay the honor since he wouldn’t be playing that night and his family wouldn’t be in attendance.

One problem: The Cavaliers’ only other visit to Boston this regular season is Feb. 11, already lined up as the day the Celtics will retire Pierce’s jersey. (It’s also a big Sunday matinee on ABC.)

On ESPN’s The Jump, where he is a regular panelist, Pierce expressed displeasure with the idea that there might be a brief video of Isaiah highlights during one of the timeouts. The funniest claim in there was that Pierce, having witnessed Kobe Bryant’s jersey retirement recently, liked how the night was 100 percent Kobe, in every timeout. (Kobe, by the way, won five titles, an MVP, and two Finals MVPs with the Lakers. Pierce respectively earned one, zero, and one with Boston.)

Pierce told ESPN on Tuesday that he spoke with Celtics president Danny Ainge about the tribute foofaraw for 40 minutes (!), and reiterated that he didn’t want Isaiah’s video to play. The quote, straight from Pierce’s lips, is hilarious.

“Danny and I talked about it for 40 minutes,” Pierce explained to ESPN early Tuesday afternoon. “He told me, ‘This is what we have planned,’ and at the end of the conversation, he said, ‘If you don’t want us to do Isaiah, we won’t.’ So I told him, ‘I really don’t.’ So that was it.

“That’s how we left it.”

Almost simultaneously, Isaiah tweeted that he didn’t want a tribute video on Feb. 11 anyways, so Pierce could have his afternoon.

Isaiah Thomas

@isaiahthomas
I'd like to thank the Celtics for their gracious offer to play a video tribute on Feb 11th celebrating my 3yrs in Boston. But since it appears this has caused some controversy w/ Paul Pierce's night I'd ask the Celtics instead to focus all of their attention on #34's career.

The tick-tock is interesting: ESPN reports it reached out to Ainge to confirm the news, and within minutes Isaiah had tweeted his gracious offer to let Pierce have undivided attention.

Here are three takeaways from this whole thing.

1. Pierce was ridiculously selfish.
Pierce’s attitude is straight out of central casting for the villain role in a soft-feature teen movie about prom drama. Come on, Truth. This one-minute tribute to a dude who played through what Isaiah Thomas played through last spring is stealing too much spotlight from your Big Day?

2. No one gets to orchestrate their own tributes.
This applies not just to Pierce — who should have no role but showing up and inviting guests — but to Isaiah, who asked the Celtics to delay their tribute to him, sparking the whole fuss.

Isaiah’s rationale was sound: He wanted his family there, and they weren’t going to be there because he wasn’t playing. But trying to micromanage little kindnesses given to you is bad form. Everyone needs to be way less involved in planning their own NBA tributes.

The related reality here is that you really can’t control these things. The tribute is choreographed; the sporting event is unscripted. (Remember the Chris Mullin fiasco in Oakland?) At this point, nothing would be sweeter than for Isaiah to hang a 50-spot on Boston and steal the spotlight, or for eternal Pierce foil LeBron James to stick a game-winner.

3. Paul Pierce doesn’t actually deserve a shut-down-the-town Kobe-style tribute.
Here’s a spicy take for you: Paul Pierce is Carmelo Anthony with better PR and a little luck.

Like Melo, Pierce was a perennial All-Star whose teams were never quite good enough. Unlike Melo, Pierce received the gift of Kevin Garnett in lieu of forcing a trade when the run with the team that drafted him puttered out. That Garnett trade directly led to Pierce’s title and Finals MVP, and preempted a Pierce trade, which resulted in The Truth ending up high in the Celtics’ record books in terms of games, points, and other longevity-based stats.

Had Ainge not stolen Garnett from old bud and Timberwolves GM Kevin McHale in the summer of 2007, Pierce almost assuredly would have been traded before the end of the 2007-08 season. If that had happened, Pierce’s jersey wouldn’t be going up into the rafters.

Pierce was pretty good for a hella long time for one team, and that’s getting him a tribute night and jersey retirement. Melo has been pretty good for a hella long time for multiple teams, and odds are no franchise will retire his jersey. Part of that is Melo’s fault for pushing his way out of Denver.

Rajon Rondo, who accomplished far less in Boston than did Isaiah once his Hall of Fame teammates were traded, lambasted the idea of honoring Thomas at all. One wonders if Boston legends of yore with fists full of rings are equally dismissive of achievements of the ballyhooed revival team that hoisted just one trophy. Everything is relative.

Pierce had an incredible run, his personal story is incredible, and he’ll forever live in Celtics lore. His No. 34 will hang with Jo Jo White’s No. 10, Dennis Johnson’s No. 3, Reggie Lewis’ No. 35, among more than a dozen others. The team wanted one minute to honor another All-Star-level guy who bled Celtic green before being shipped out for a brighter, younger thing. You’d think The Truth would be cool with that. Oh well.

1) there's some half-truth in that he was thinking of himself, but it's a night to honor him, so he's within the scope of normal behavior to want it to be focused on him.

2) This is just flat out false. If I'm being honored by an organization, I absolutely have a right to have opinions on how they do it (or don't do it) and to have those opinions be heard.

3) c'mon. Paul Pierce was beloved by Boston fans BEFORE he won a title. He gave his heart and soul to a bunch of mediocre teams for a decade-plus. Melo was never beloved by anyone, except in Syracuse. If the Celtics had never won a title, they STILL would be retiring his jersey.

1. It's Pierce's night. Of course it shouldn't be the same night.

2. He played two seasons for a team with 17 championships and 21 conference titles. He led them to a first round loss and an ECF loss. You don't *need* to do anything for IT other than a nice ovation for him next time he plays at the Garden. Announce his name and people will give nice applause. If fans are screaming for a video package when IT returns to town, fine, something pre-game that *isn't* a night of tribute for a title-winning Celtics legend would more than suffice.

3. The Celtics should stop trying to have it both ways. They traded the man after he played following the death of his sister. They made a business decision, the right decision. They should own that decision. They're feeling guilty because IT was mad at them publicly and some fans felt they did him dirty. Some nice video package about IT's time with the Celtics won't change a goddamn thing.

It's like a boyfriend who dumped his girlfriend for a prettier girl posting on Facebook about how "special" the ex will "always be to me, she'll have a place in my heart forever," etc. Fuck all that. You dumped her, she's hurt over it. No amount of public contrition is going to make the healing process go any faster for those hurt by the decision.

necessarily wrong, but its still tremendously childish for Pierce himself to speak on it a make a big issue about it.

Pierce is crybaby and still trying to compare himself to Kobe. First he wanted a "farewell tour" like Kobe. Now's talking about he wants his jersey retirement to be like Kobe's. You ain't Kobe dude, get over yourself lol....

He announced his retirement at the beginning of the season and people read into it because Kobe and Jeter made the farewell tour a thing. He never actually asked for a farewell tour in any shape or form.

Now's talking
>about he wants his jersey retirement to be like Kobe's. You
>ain't Kobe dude, get over yourself lol....
>

Any jersey retirement night should be 100% about that player and he's a local legend in a way that IT is not. Maybe he's being a little petty, but so what? He deserves his own night.

“I had a chance to watch Kobe’s, and throughout the game and timeouts, they were a lot of tribute videos for him,” Pierce said. “I enjoyed to watch that throughout the game. Hopefully, now, the Boston Celtics will do that for me. I’m not sure I want to see an Isaiah video that night.”

>but its still tremendously childish for
>Pierce himself to speak on it a make a big issue about it.

1. IT isn't infringing on Pierce's night. All is well.
2. IT is hurt for his return to the Garden.
3. The Celtics want to show a one-minute tribute video thanking IT for his two seasons in Boston.
4. Because IT isn't playing, his family won't be there, and he wants his family to be there, so *he* requests Boston move the video package to the next available night-- Pierce's night.

Instead of bringing his family out for a game in which he wasn't playing so they could see his one-minute video and watch him wave while people cheered, he thought the better solution was to ASK THE ORGANIZATION TO MOVE IT INTO THE MIDDLE OF A CELTIC LEGEND'S TRIBUTE NIGHT.

How in the fuck is IT, the two-year All-Star with not even an ECF to his name, the one who isn't in the wrong, while Paul Pierce, the fourteen-year Celtic with ten ASGs, four All-NBA honors, second highest leading scorer in franchise history, second highest PPG in franchise history, title winner, NBA Finals MVP, is the one to blame here?

Nah. All of that "he's trying to be Kobe" spin by the angry people is nonsense, and they should all know it. Pierce didn't get a huge farewell tour, no one's asking for teams across the country to acknowledge him as a GOAT of the game. There aren't big "thanks Paul" commercial campaigns. I can't even find a quote in which Pierce compares himself to Kobe in this situation-- am I missing some offensive Pierce quote, or do people think home court nights dedicated to the career of a legend on the night of the jersey retirement exclusively belonged to Kobe?

He is asking for one night, dedicated to his career, thrown by the franchise for which he is indisputably a legend. He absolutely deserves it.

They should just have one, that's has a revolving cast of Black Guys to give his hot takes vs a revolving cast of White Guys. You pick who hosts that week out of a lotery and that's it. And you get a double bonus if the black guy was a former-pro or the white guy has a Jon B. beard.

The combos are endless.

Herschel Walker and Michael Rappaport

Nick Cannon and Andy Roddick

Just go on and on....

kinda feel bad for Chris, he had a nice little thing at ESPN...now he's basically at the JV team sports network to keep his paper up. I've attempted to watch that show a couple different times but that Nick cat is unbearable to me.

8. "Why wasn't PP's ceremony scheduled vs the LAL?"
In response to Reply # 0

as per Frank's reply, Ainge is doing too much here

and it's starting to feel like they're trying to right a wrong

I'm assuming they intentionally scheduled this vs CLE

to take advantage of the nationally televised exposure

BOS is on national TV once a week

and you would think this would go further vs their historic rivals, the LAL, not CLE

compounded by acquiescing to IT's demand that his video tribute be run when he's playing, family in attendance, etc...

IMO, it's disrespectful to PP

his night.

How were the Celtics supposed to know IT still wouldn't be playing by February 11th?

Besides, you can't blame a team for throwing a big tribute night during one of the biggest home games of the season. Not when IT's the one who wanted to move his video into a night that was scheduled nearly half a year prior.

In other words, PP shouldn't have been put in the position to be put on blast for speaking up about this. The fucking Celtics should've nixed IT's bullshit right away. The Cavs were in Boston on January whateverthefuck. Celtics should've told IT "your video's being played tonite." HE is the diva in this situation, requesting that the vid be shown at a later date, so his family could be there. He had what 10 months to plan for his family to be there for the video ? Why'd he have to try and intrude on an already-scheduled Pierce jersey retirement nite ?

PP shouldn't have to share his nite with anyone. He earned that jersey retirement, and is a Celtics legend. IT was here 3 years and despite the high level of respect I have for the way he plays and approached his time here, he didn't win shit and doesn't deserve any say in his post-Celtics-career tributes. He should feel fortunate they're even giving him one in the first place.

The Celtics are to blame. IT is next on the list. PP shouldn't have been put in the position to be publicly embarrassed over something he earned.

For anyone saying, "What'd IT do for them to deserve a video tribute" - this really is pretty standard for the next time a former star comes to town.

I think IT was petty to say that he wanted it when his family was in town...I know he wasn't playing, but just wave dude.

I think PP is giving this too much credence. It's like 30-60 seconds.

I also think PP deserves all the recognition that night, so I kind of get his POV here but I think it's dumb the retirement has to be against the Cavs for some dumb reason.

...in January, when he was injured. Played the video, had him wave. All over.

All that said, Pierce is still being petty. It's a minute out of a night dedicated to you. Are you that insecure that you can't give up a minute? I've been to player dedication nights before, even for other sports. The ***entire*** night doesn't revolve around the player.

And the other Celtics on the '08 team need to stop woofing. Right, IT didn't do anything for the franchise, but you cornballs still won't talk to Ray Allen. GATWTFOH.

Now I am not in total favor of having a tribute for Isiah, announce his name, let him get the ovation, move forward. However, Pierce being all upset about that happening on 'his night' is petty. You gonna live in Celtics history forever, you worried about a 30 second tribute!?!?

It seems like the Cavs visiting Bos would take away from Pierce more than an IT tribute video.

And I think it was big of IT to bow out.

If the event was the retirement ceremony like your analogy, i would agree. If they were honoring IT during PP's ceremony i'd agree.

I don't see how the 2min video during pregame intros takes away from PPs ceremony. i just don't see it *shrug*

Two were for Ricky Henderson. The first was when they officially retired his number. The second was last year when they named the playing field after him. And this is Ricky, who is not only the best player to ever play for the Oakland A's, but also one of the best baseball players of all time. For the first one, he got the all the pomp and circumstance in a ceremony before the game. He got to address the crowd. He threww out the first pitch. He got his huge, prolonged, standing ovation. The second ceremony was similar to the first, except he didn't give a speech.

And yes, during both game the showed Ricky-related highlights on the scoreboards between innings. But they also did Dot Racing. The also had shots of people in the crowd waving at the camera. In other words, all the other "normal" shit that the do during the other 80 home games.

So you'll excuse me if I find Pierce insisting that the night has to ONLY be about him kind of silly. And petty.

Again, saying, "Well, if you want to drop pizzas from the ceiling, that's cool. But I'm damn sure not allowing you to talk about any other players on MY day," is petty.

I don't even think during the second ceremony for Ricky they showed anything else besides the tribute video before the game, and THEY WERE NAMING THE DAMN PLAYING FIELD AFTER HIM.

However, I also didn't know that his family couldn't be there that night. Which... makes sense for him to object about. I don't know if it enough for the Celtics to change there plans, but I understand IT's sentiments.

To your first point, the Celtics are indeed to blame for this whole thing. IT takes second place. PP is nowhere on the list. He deserves his night. End of story.

have to do shit for him. IT's ego and pending max contract demands is reason Boston shipped him out. That same ego wanted to have his tribute on a day when he was 100% so his family could see him drop 30 and stick it to the team that traded him.

But IT doesn't get to call those shots, Ainge should've told him that up front but like Paul said Ainge got punked. After dealing with Paul as a player for 10+ years through good times and bad Ainge, should know what a crybaby Paul is and that he wouldn't like IT's tribute being on his day.

Both are acting like spoiled brats. It's like someone telling you their getting you a gift and instead of saying thank you instead you say "I don't want that I want something else!"

Also for the record it was Paul Pierce himself who brought Kobe's name up...:

"The 10-time NBA All-Star, who spent 15 years in Boston, referenced Kobe Bryant’s dual-number retirement with the Lakers as an example of what he hopes to see.

“I had a chance to watch Kobe’s, and throughout the game and timeouts, they were a lot of tribute videos for him,” Pierce said. “I enjoyed to watch that throughout the game. Hopefully, now, the Boston Celtics will do that for me. I’m not sure I want to see an Isaiah video that night.”"
https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-celtics/2018/01/04/paul-pierce-doesnt-want-to-see-an-isaiah-thomas-tribute-video-on-the-night-of-his-jersey-retirement

those are HIS word, even in retirement he's still trying to compare himself to Kobe lol...

Pierce always had a complex about not being considered a top tier talent amongst the likes of Kobe, AI, Bron,T-Mac, etc.. so he's always played with a chip on his shoulder and it also whats driven him his entire career.

And yes, he's secretly envious of Kobe especially, being that LA is his hometown and he wishes he starred there under the glitzy lights. I say all this as a long time observer and big fan of his, but its quite obvious lol

Paul Pierce forever, but i can't even cosign everything my own Mom does.

That said, it was also lame for my fellow little man to request a piece of Paul's night. IT will always be able to call Boston home in my book, i'd love to see him back in green some day, but lame is lame, and I get Paul's issues with it...i just like to see grown men be a tad bigger about stuff like that. Pierce shoulda swallowed it, rolled with it, and it would have been great anyway.

Everyone came out looking diminished.

FOH. If you don't sit your ass down some place fam.

I was at the game when Jamal Crawford played the Clippers this year. There was zero talk about it. No publicity. Nothing. They ran their little tribute video, and the announcer mentioned it. He waived. That was it. I don't know if generations of Crawfords were there. I'm not even sure he knew it was gonna happen. He looked caught off guard.

This nigga wants to schedule his tribute?

Let Michigan want to honor Jalen Rose at half time and Desmond Howard show up at the same game with his family and get a highlight tribute and do his Heisman pose at half court. He'd be fucking tight.

Don't get me wrong, Pierce ABSOLUTELY deserves to have the day ALL TO HIMSELF for what he did for Boston. No argument there. Even the way he handled it with Ainge privately was cool...Ainge asked him about it, and dude was like I'd rather not share the day.

BUT

To go out of your way (moreso the rest of the old Celtics) and just dis and dismiss IT (the Isaiah who, what has he done shit) is petty as hell, and almost grimy. Dude WANTED to stay in Boston and was legit HEARTBROKEN when he got traded. Some of his best and worst moments were with Boston. This is a cat that many people felt shouldn't even have been in the league, and balled his ass off. Not only that, he stepped aside when he found out Pierce wanted the day to himself and all these heads is just dissin' him. It's bitchmade on the former Celtics to go in on Thomas like that...straight bitchmade

Ainge fucked this one up

You gotta love Rondo talking that hanging banners shit like he hasn't been a straight up LOSER for years and years now. I used to really dig that Big 3 era Celtics squad but man a whole lot of those guys just sound like mad, bitter bitches these days. Except for Ray, who is out there getting catfished.

doesn’t detract at all from Pierce being honored IMO.

This “my special day” bullshit is just too much.

And IT shouldn’t give a damn about the Celtics IMO. They just traded you and they are the competition now so fuck them and their stupid little tribute.

It's bringing focus to another player on the nite when PP's JERSEY IS BEING RETIRED. That's a big deal, and should remain a big deal. Name me one single player in the history of sports who shared his jersey retirement nite in even the tiniest way with another player who didn't play with the player getting his jersey retired. I'll wait.

Iont give a shit about either of these dudes but you only get to retire a persons jersey once right? Why share it in any way with another player? Did they even play together on the Celtics?

Even if they did it’s sports. your jersey retirement night should be your night. They should run all that shit past you and you should get a say in what you want.

Perhaps the Knicks isn't the best of examples since Boston themselves are overflowing with HOF'ers. NONE of them shared a "Honors night", and given Pierce is next up in those rafters, having someone like Isaiah who isn't nearly as accomplished to still get a "hey we loved you when you was here" honor when he ALREADY had his chance that HE passed on the 1st time. That is all a bit much.

Let me be clear, the Celtics are most at fault here for not saying Pierce's date was off-limits. They disrespected Pierce and put him in the position where he could've either been gracious (but offended) or petty (and maybe a little less offended).

That I.T. had a short video on the day Pierce was honored would've been a footnote in history.... a trivia question.

This little controversy is probably more memorable than the "shared" event would've been.

Again, the Celtics should've protected him from this moment.

You don’t retire someone’s jersey and show a 2 minute highlight of another player who now plays for a different team. Celtics shoulda ran that shit without even getting IT’s permission.

They should’ve just did it without asking anybody and nobody would’ve really noticed or cared and it wouldn’t even be a story.

And if Pierce really did notice and take exception to a little 30 second video and ovation for Thomas, while they’re rolling out the red carpet for him later on....too bad. I’d like to think most people are a little more humble and reasonable than that.

IT's tribute was originally scheduled for january 3rd.

but because it was the 2nd game of a B2B and he wasn't playing, he requested the celtics reschedule it. prolly cause he wanted to show out and drop 30 on them, rather than just wave to the crowd and KIM.

and their only other return trip happened to fall on the same day as pierce's jersey retirement.

even if you think pierce is being petty, it's in response to some shit that the other guy caused. and caused out of pettiness!

not sure why he's the one getting the brunt of the criticism. why does he need to be the bigger man?

Isaiah was way more beloved, more central, a better player
and did more for the franchise than Barnes ever did.

He had one of the best seasons in Celtic history.

seriously, if it's not that big of a deal it should have been done on the 3rd.

Obviously it's a big deal to IT.

It's DEFINITELY a big deal to PP because he gave that team a lot and this is his night. I mean, maybe it's cause folks haven't had that type of career but ionno. Hanging a jersey is a big fucking deal. Last thing you want to hear is "would you mind if..."

I find it hilarious how you niggas expect employees to not
expect transparency and decent from their employer. IT didn't
throw a tirade. His tone is of that of employee/employer shit
and is totally fair. Any franchise player traded with no
consultation has a RIGHT to not have good things to say about
the situation. He understands that it's a business. He's one
of the nicest guys in sports. But that doesn't mean he
shouldn't feel some kind of way. Anyone would.

What in the ENTIRE FUCK are you talking about dude ? That is so outrageous.

Not to mention the fact that he's hardly a franchise player. I give him all the credit in the world for the AMAZING season he had last year but that was BEYOND the best he'd ever be able to give any team. He's not bringing anyone to the promised land. He's not LeBron. He's not Steph.

FOH with this "franchise player" shit. He overachieved and I love him for it but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

You're an imbecile.

Being frustrated that a franchise tells you one thing and
does another is a perfectly reasonable thing to be upset
at, and players have been mad at that in every sport for
half a century or more, and will continue to be that way.
And it's perfectly fine. Many trades are made with consultation,
so that the player traded is at least mentally prepared. That's
how classy front offices do it.

Sure, at the end of the day it's a business, but that goes both
ways:

Lebron's decision on TV was in very poor form. KD not calling
Westbrook was poor form. Teams trading players they TOLD they
weren't going to is poor form. It goes both ways. (and both Lebron
and KD and the teams have the RIGHT to do what they want. But we
can call poor form, poor form. It's all good.

Hell, you ever see Jason Kidd's reaction to being traded
from the Suns? Way, way, way, way, way saltier than Isaiah.
Hell, Isaiah has handled it as well or better than most
players of his caliber

>Not to mention the fact that he's hardly a franchise player.

He finished top 5 in the MVP race and was the best player on
a 1-seed.

He's plenty franchise.

I

Lebron are each going to end their career top 5 at their
position (Lebron any position) all time. You don't need
to be that to be franchise. A franchise player is one that
if you build around them, you have an elite team.

By definition, Isiah Thomas is franchise player: a Top 5
MVP finisher who was the best player on a 1-seed. It's not
up for dbate.

I'm still waiting for someone to give a good reason why a Celtics champion, who played his ass off here for 17 years and had an immense impact on the organization, should have to share his JERSEY RETIREMENT NIGHT with fucking ANYBODY, for any amount of time (90 seconds or 2 seconds), nevermind a guy who barely made a dent here comparatively.

PP is having a ceremony as a sidebar to the game. If it was HIS night, there would only be a ceremony and no game and yeah, then it would be silly for him to share his night with anyone.

but there's a game, and during the game he's getting his jersey retired. It ain't the other way around.

Yeah, obviously there's going to be a game with 2 teams and dancers and t-shirt cannons and whatnot. That's not the same as sharing your jersey retirement night with a weird "and here's a video package for a guy who was here for a little bit!". I'm not even saying Pierce wasn't petty in his response, but what are you even arguing here?

obviously there is still a game people are showing up for, but the night itself is meant to honor that guy and that's why tickets become harder to come by and all that. it's not like they're sticking the jersey ceremony in between mascot dunks. it's a big fucking deal and a short tribute video to an obviously less important player would feel misplaced.

It wasn't billed as "The Pierce and IT night" it was the Pierce night for months and then the Celtics tried to shoehorn IT into it to appease everyone. As a Celts legend he absolutely has a right to say no to that. You wanna argue how he goes about it? Fine, but this whole "it's not actually his night" thing is weird. I'd call it hair-splitting, but there's not even a hair there to split. Every jersey retirement is considered that player's "night" and nothing you've said has proven otherwise.

If you're in Boston - you *had* to plan the Pierce tribute game when cleveland is in town? (once a year) - knowing that IT will be there? You couldn't pick another of your 40 home games to do this?

PP is petty and shouldn’t have even commented. The Celtics would have looked like ducks if they’d gone forward with combining tributes.
IT tribute for what? Being on the team. GTFOH
PP deserves his own night.
Jalen’s opinion, about PP being petty, is spot on though.

Soooooooooo your official stance is that PP should have been fine with having his jersey retirement night impeded upon by a guy getting a participation trophy, a trophy which you don't think he deserves, and that PP should've stayed quiet, even though you simultaneously acknowledge PP deserves his own night ? Twisting yourself into a pretzel here.

WHY SHOULD HE STAY QUIET ABOUT THIS ????? His jersey gets retired once. He shouldn't have to be put in the damn POSITION to have to comment on some shit like this. The Celtics are to blame. Pierce deserves to be heated. Beyond that, Ainge fucked up by telling the media that Pierce talked to him about it and should have taken this on by himself, since it was his fault to begin with.

the Celtics would have liked like fools. PP didn’t have to add to the shitshow by saying a word. Of course, he deserves his own night but would his legacy have been tarnished as a result of the Celtics combining his night with the gifting of a participation trophy to IT? I highly doubt it!

Now, all of ‘em look dumb. Sometimes, a man just gotta shut up and just let happen what’s gon happen. This is one of those cases. Now, and again, they all look stupid.

“Y’all go head and do what you think is best” kinda situations.

The Celtics were essentially showing Pierce exactly how they feel about him.

I ain’t bout to beg a mofo to treat me how I want to be treated when, considering my tenure, contributions, and achievements with this organization, they should already know what to do.

PP deserves his own night.
PP petty for voicing his displeasure about their plans especially since they’re showing him how valued he is by even suggesting the combo tribute.

Both can be right. Right?

Show the mofos how to treat you instead of tell ‘em. Problem is that he wasn’t willing to say FUCK Y’ALL. He wants to be hailed as a Celtics great when they wanna coronate him while, at the same time, pay tribute to a dude who ain’t done nothing.

PERIOD.

He had to speak up for himself, because if not the organization was going to undermine him on a night that he's supposed to remember for the rest of his life.

As a Black man I applaud Paul Pierce for sticking up for himself. It's crazy how often I see Black men try to talk other Black men out of sticking up for themselves. I don't walk around assuming that ANYONE else is going to do right by me and mines. It's on me to make sure that they do.

but it rarely happens in sports for a night like PP's night.

That's just.. weird. Almost seems forced like they trying to make IT feel as good as possible by getting his clip played on the same night PP goes into the rafters.

That's not how it works tho...

at least that's not how it should ever work. This shit reminds me of Moonlight getting shitted on at the Oscars... or Black dude who won the Apprentice and Trump asked him if he was willing to share the award with the runner up. Black dude was like "hell nah, it's mines.. I won it fair and square"

but why even have to do that shit?

They scheduled Pierce's jersey retirement months ago. They wouldn't move it up suddenly to accommodate a tribute of a guy who was there for 2.5 years.

He just should have handled this behind closed doors with Ainge or even went to IT himself and explained his side of the story.

Celtics shouldn't have put him in this position, period.
Now is not the time for Paul Pierce to be sympathetic to everyone else's feelings. Just honor him like you're supposed to, instead of him having to ASK for the org to honor him properly.

That is true, but he should have worked this out through back channels and said something political like, 'I'm looking forward to the night and hope it works out well for me and Celtics fans'.

PP isn't in the wrong per se, but he's made an awkward situation worse which is the point I was trying to get at.

I wasn't following the story of the tribute until PP made his comment about wanting the night to himself and likening the night to Kobe's night. If the Celts just made a press release that they decided to only honor Paul Pierce that night, I don't think anyone would have really cared about the story after a day or so.

If PP said, "The Celtics and I are working out exactly how to handle the situation," and then not have his conversation with Danny leaked to the press, Pierce would have not been criticized, the Celtics would have came out like they were doing right by Paul while also being considerate.

IT would have been made out like he was being slighted by the organization again, but that's what happened anyway.

The way it worked out now, the Pierce looks mean-spirited and curmudgeonly, the Celts look wishy washy and IT looks to be the only adult in the situation.

Pierce isn't wrong for wanting a night to himself but he didn't manage the press well at all and while he's not at fault for his wish, he is at fault for mishandling the situation.

his role had diminished with the team, he was losing minutes to Avery Bradley, his name was constantly in trade rumors throughout the season. It made sense for him to choose his own destiny than to continue to get jerked around in Boston. Despite all that BS "brotherhood" talk everybody knows his relationships with those other guys wasn't really that great so he didn't owe them shit. Guys leave teams all the time and don't "check with" their teammates before they do it lol.

disrespected in Boston, what better way to get even than join the enemy. Boston had basically marginalized him and written him off. He was always the most criticized of the Big 3 from day 1 and got the least credit when things went well. He probably should've been Finals MVP over Pierce.

Pretty clear it's pointless to continue this discussion since you just keep moving further and further from the original points, but ...

What ?! Where did this even come from ? Because he was involved in trade talks ? Kinda proves my original point doesn't it ? Wahhhhhhhhhh. Whiny little Ray.

What on EARTH are you talking about ? Do you have any evidence of this or are you just saying words ?

It was know fact, Ray struggled early on because as shooter it was tough for him being a #1 option his whole career to being #3 but by the time the playoffs rolled around he was playing at a high level.

Boston hadn't written him off. Doc was managing minutes and Ray didn't like that because, again BACK TO THE ORIGINAL POINT, he's a whiny baby. So he ran away, like whiny little babies do, took half $ to go to Miami, get less minutes, and ring chase.

So you took me on a tangent that actually helped prove my point. I appreciate that.

its comical that you guys are acting like Ray constantly being on the trade block wasn't a thing...:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1094863-why-ray-allen-is-the-most-coveted-trade-piece-of-the-celtics

http://www.espn.com/boston/nba/story/_/id/7830058/doc-rivers-says-boston-celtics-nearly-traded-ray-allen-memphis-grizzlies-oj-mayo

https://www.celticsblog.com/2012/10/25/3557122/more-ray-allen-trades-that-never-happened

He could've stayed on a Boston team on the way down only to be traded somewhere he may have not wanted to go or control his own destiny and go play in Miami with the defending champs. It was a no-brainer.

So I can't blame him for feeling unwanted by the Celtics. Their offer was more of the Cs not wanting him to play for Miami than them wanting him to play for Boston.

does no one else get annoyed when Jalen Rose constantly interrupts when ever one of his co-hosts is about to make a point and he'll just interject with some cornball joke or his horrid singing? I'm not saying the dude is without his merits when he makes his cognizant points or insights, but him constantly interrupting folks annoys me to the point I have to turn the channel. It reminds me of when folks do that in real life, which is a pet peeve of mine.

aren't the best to listen to, if Jalen at least interrupted with something tangible or insightful, I'd rock with you in that regard. Unfortunately, he chimes in with cornball non-sequiturs that have nothing to do with what the person that rightfully has to floor is saying.

I suppose I'm in a minority, but it's annoying none the less. And I imagine the Disney/ESPN/ABC producers are given Jalen the green light to do this, so I don't fully blame him. I still turn the channel when it happens though.

but ya'll niggas sure getting worked up about HIS day. lmao. Callin Ray Allen petty for using the gram lolol. This is downright hilarious.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

when you're upping a post where you argue a jersey retirement is the same as a bobblehead night for approximately 100 replies.

principles or get in my feelings bc I don't care about either of those dudes. Do I still have an opinion??? obviously. But do I care if PP get in his feelings..no. Do ya'll...clearly.

i mean ..we talking about ray allen being petty bc he posted about golf. How long was his social media hiatus supposed to be for? Could he slide in a model DMs or would that have been out of bounds too?

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

but i'd hardly hold him up as a beacon of unpettiness in an otherwise petty world. and yes, you seem to care a lot about this subject.

I can get why KG and Pierce were mad that he didn't give them a head's up but I think they held on to that beef too long. People painting Ray as an innocent bystander in this story are doing too much though. Like he didn't know going to the Heat w/o telling them would piss them off? lol, cmon now.

*shrugs* I believe Pierce and Ray when they say they buried the hatchet, which I always stated they would, so it's all a moot point anyway.
