"New Year's Soccer: Virgil Van Dough"

Biggest news of the week came out of Liverpool, obv. Premier League and Serie A only ones running at the moment. And the EPL has games Sat-Wednesday.

The ones to check are probably

Liverpool v. Leicester on 12/30
Arsenal v. Chelsea on 1/3

certainly wouldn't shock me if they didn't. 6th right now in xG differential.

this team isn't even close to challenging city. what they did for the 1st half of the season was completely unsustainable.

And we were content to continually try and jam the ball - that requires picking out the perfect pass, low odds. We have to introduce more width in the 2nd half - multiple channels are available.

Calum doesn’t make his body bigger, nothing deliberate, he’s a bloody fucking yard away when the ball is played at his arm.

Cotdamn man, unacceptable man. Fucking unacceptable and embarrassing decision. Then this cunt has the gall to give Cech a yellow bc he asks Dean a question about why that’s awarded a penalty when the refs made it a point to not call penalties on these close proximity calls...and instead of responding, he gives a card. Childish ass shit man, get this dude the fuck off the premier league pitch.

3 - Chambers still has the same problem: he does not understand risk/reward and he doesn't read the game well. Both are death knells for any CB and he nearly killed us in the 1st half. Our defense is already some shit but then you add in Chambers having to make good and quick decisions...not a good look.

4 - Ozil is a maestro when he actually has support and skill around him. That 1st half is arguably the best he's ever had for us and especially pertinent when you consider the beta in our attacking play in this game vs the last without him.

26. "We did but such a naive play by Bellerin"
In response to Reply # 25

There's zero need to put your fucking foot in there - just let it drop and play positional defense especially since you know Chelsea is going to be pressing and looking to go down in the box in order to get a game-tying PK.

I hate that call because it's a nick on the bottom of the foot that wouldn't actually affect a non-diving player but you simply do not put yourself into that situation there. Really stupid

30. "Our level of defending is laughable"
In response to Reply # 0
Wed Jan-03-18 04:43 PM by LA2Philly

All I can do is sit there and shake my head at how shitty our defending is.

Our CB's getting split by a simple through ball on 3 separate occasions, Morata in literally 10 yards of space on two of them. Bellerin with the silly penalty, Mustafi not turning his head to see if he has anyone running across his face resulting in the tap-in for Alonso....and those are just the big plays.

It's the quantity of the mistakes and it's the type of mistakes (bloody basic mistakes) that is maddening. Chambers playing in space is a recipe for disaster - he still cannot read the game nor does he understand risk/reward.

Utterly terrible man. The point is cool but it's the same defensive issues day in and day out. We can always make the excuse of injuries but lets be honest and the injury tracking data has backed this up - year in and year out, we're always decimated by injuries. The sample size is too large at this point, it's a systemic issue.

31. "Obiang v Son, who ya got?"
In response to Reply # 0

Son's strike was impressive for its sudden violence, but Obiang's is just as powerful despite his move seeming on the verge of failure the whole time (notice how his final control is just a tad rough). Of course you'd expect Son to hit a shot like that much more than Obiang, though in the end both shots are wonderful in their own way

Then you also have to consider sterling is in that starting lineup in ink somewhere.

He was going to walk in the summer for nothing so £15M for what would have maybe been a 5 month rental (assuming he would be healthy) for Everton is good money, also clears the room for the millions of central mids Everton already has.

KDB Is top 5 in the world easy. Hazzard, lukaku, they got defenders,

The talent is crazy but with KDB it feels like they are at another level at this point.i know the history, but remember the global poster childs for galactic chocking was Spain before 2010 (good I miss that, fuck Spain)

Who has more talent right now. I think talent wise I have them ahead of France

Still hoping for a 2002, unexpected Brasil resurection, but can't see past Belgium

though with him and suarez both there it gives me more justification for cheering for liverpool south. can't really be mad at the situation, since it's almost exactly what we just did with southampton and van dijk. but coutinho's creativity and vision are going to be hard to replace.

in reality, vvd + Keita + the current roster may/will translate to more wins.

Even when Can leaves. Which, frankly, I don't get what the hype is about. He's limited, IMO.

i just think he isn't a great fit for Klopp-ball. so his exit would be good for you and him.

But the way he plays now and under Klopp just isn't very effective.

He shows flashes, and certainly has the occasional brilliant pass or shot.

But I feel like every time he's the holding mid, the midfield is ineffective.

This is the worst Arsenal defensive team I’ve seen in my lifetime...the lack of coverage and risk/reward understanding in the midfield and the back, the lack of connectivity in the backline...the amount of open space and ease of play is laughable.

Of course pace can make up for some things but if your back 3, wingbacks and holding mids aren’t connected, don’t read the game, and don’t understand risk/reward then no amount of pace is going to make up for that.

The amount of times we get caught on odd man breaks, the amount of space, the basic communication breakdowns...we’re trying to run a nuanced formation with a team who has an elementary understanding and chemistry, at fucking best.

coach, in any other sport, who was allowed to cook for so long while producing minimal results.

i mean, i realize soccer is a bit of different animal as it's important to play in CL and whatnot, and Wenger has done that minus a year here or there and he's kept Arsenal relevant in the sense that they mostly finish top 4.

THAT SAID, you can't tell me there's NO other coach out there who could get more out of the players or do more tactically. On the other hand, Arsenal doesn't like to spend very often and that's also hurt them but I'm not too up on whether that's on Wenger or the board.

Fucking embarrassing. What was the excuse when Leicester won the title?

The hopes have gone from title contention to hoping to be in the top 4 and if we do make it, praying we get the easiest matchup in the CL knock-out stages.

That normalization is the exact reason we’re in this damn mess. The change should have been made years ago, now we’re getting leap-frogged bc of blind loyalty.

CIty, United, and Chelsea have spent FAR more. They can afford to buy players that we apparently can't, and they can definitely afford to buy more, and to swing and miss on big signings and just replace them the next window. The $ gap is too big to reasonably expect Arsenal to be winning the league

Or that we play Mesut out wide rather than in his normal 10 role, or we play Mikel Arteta at holding mid for 5 years, or that we continue to play only zonal marking on corners, or that we play Ramsey out of position for his entire career, or that the midfield doesn’t understand risk/reward, or that the backline communication breaks down on simple 1 striker coverage or...the list goes on. All Kroenke’s fault

we all know arsenal's issues, which are plenty. there's no excusing them.

but they're not going to realistically compete for a title until they spend more. period. listing leicester as an exception, as if it disproves the rule, is kind of silly.

tottenham and liverpool have improved... to top 4 status. which is where arsenal was for years. whoopty damn doo. they still ain't winning shit.

as far as real contenders, it's always going to be the same 3 teams it's been for the last 15 years. because they outspend everyone else.

How did Leicester City win a title? How was ManU under Moyes and Van Gaal while spending?

We have the same on pitch issues year in and year out for basically the last 10 years now. Blaming Kroenke is a mental midget rationalization.

You want to talk transfers...we’ve had the chance to have Kante for 30m, Higuain for 40m, Suarez for 40+, Draxler for 30, and this past summer Lemar for 60 at the start of the summer (then we ordered 92 once Wenger got desperate)...that list goes on and on. Guess who runs the valuation policy and deemed those values to be too high? Wenger.

Your loser mindset would fit perfectly on our current board. Popping champagne to to finish 4th while normalizing it and rationalizing every step of the way. Embarrassing.

This isn’t about the FA Cup. This is about the same shit we’ve seen all season - junk defending. We aren’t winning shit with how poorly this team understands risk/reward and the lack of balance or understanding between the back 3, wing-backs, and central midfield.

I hope this team flames the fuck out so we can finally move on.
