That one year at UK isn’t doing shit different than one year at any other program would do for the top guys.

UK is obviously a great program and so is Duke....but not so much better than all the other top programs for recruiting to be this lopsided.

* If Cal and K were THAT great, they’d alternate winning the chip every single season this decade given how they get any recruits they want.

Other top recruits go other places or better recruits go other places and end up worse.

So there's that.

Recruiting, developing talent, and winning the Tourney are 3 diff things.

You probably get tight when you have to replace 2 starters. Try 4 or 5 every year. Shit ain't easy.

>Other top recruits go other places or better recruits go
>other places and end up worse.

Not sure about that, for the top, top guys. As a Cuse fan I fully believe Carmelo would’ve been the same level player regardless of where he went. Might not have won a chip everywhere else because Boeheim was smart enough to leave him the f alone and give him the ball.

>So there's that.
>
>Recruiting, developing talent, and winning the Tourney are 3
>diff things.

Yeah, it’s hard to win a one and done tourney. Developing talent for the very top recruits in one year is overrated IMO. Again speaking from a Cuse perspective, Syracuse gets WAY more credit for a Hakim Warrick - a nobody recruit with little game when he showed up and raw athleticism who became an All American and 10 year NBA player - than they do Carmelo Anthony.

>You probably get tight when you have to replace 2 starters.
>Try 4 or 5 every year. Shit ain't easy.

Definitely not easy to win in a one and done format. I’ve thought Calipari was good since UMass. I guess my point is the recruiting results are way out of wack recently with how good he is in comparison to other coaches. And I don’t get it.

Some dudes want to learn from a HOFer and earn their spot.

Some dudes just need a change of scenery if they haven't been balling well.

The track record of dudes who transferred away from Duke has *not* been great, historically. Semi Ojeleye is the only one who really prospered-- and he even said publicly it was because he wasn't mature enough to handle the pressure that came with playing at Duke. (And, to be fair to Semi, he's literally the *only* transfer that occurred because I thought he was *earning* minutes that K simply wasn't giving. The other guys who transferred for more minutes were absolutely getting the minutes they were earning.)

I'll be very interested to see how Thornton does at USC, btw. If Melton is suspended forever, maybe he'll get ~18 MPG on that roster... but he was getting more at Duke his freshman year (26 MPG!) and his dad got mad about that, so unsure what's going to happen with this situation. And if Melton comes back, dude will likely ride pine and wait for next season.

He's *very* sped up-- forcing shots, committing turnovers. He's not letting the game come to him.

The one good thing: he's not shy. He comes out looking to make plays. I think by midseason we might see a little more from him, and we'll certainly see him next season. But he's not a player ready for major minutes.

And negative recruited the 2-3 zone....and used what defense to come back yesterday?

He’s just another good coach that’s really good at talking a bunch of bullshit.

Lol... Cal don't give a shit about Syracuse dude. He's not negative recruiting your zone.

He's been saying he doesn't play zone for years, but they've been asking for him to do it, because of the teams size.

He seemed to be all Cuse for a long time and they badly needed a PG this year and he was the only one they recruited, and he supposedly told them shortly before he committed to UK that he was Cuse bound. Only a few truly know why he switched up. But here he is as a backup....doubt that’s what he was hoping for.

>Lol... Cal don't give a shit about Syracuse dude. He's not
>negative recruiting your zone.

Everyone negative recruits the zone. Don’t know why. It’s not like most of those bullshit college man to man defenses are the same thing as NBA man to man either. Or that the NBA really cares either way. They still pick our guys when they’re good enough or have the right measurables.

>He's been saying he doesn't play zone for years, but they've
>been asking for him to do it, because of the teams size.

Just thought it was funny that he played zone to come back. Richards specifically said something about not being a “zone guy”.

We only recruited 2 pgs really last year. Maybe 3 if you count Waters.

He's not a backup. Cal went with SGA for some reason. Quade has been one of the highlight players so far in pre-season.

The kid goes. And he will hoop for us a lot this year.

He's a multi-year player though.

I’ll never understand why these kids all line up to go there, K isnt playing more than 6 1/2 no matter what and you’ll be recruited over. ACC not an option for Tucker anymore. Should’ve went to Cuse or GT in the first place.

... and he knew who K was recruiting the following year. He knew who was on this year and who'd likely be on next year. This wasn't recruiting over. This was Tucker not being as good as he thinks he is.

I think he saw himself in the role Alex O'Connell earned. AOC has been better than Tucker from the first public scrimmage. As a result, AOC is almost certainly in line to start next year, which is likely where Tucker saw himself when he committed.

I would've hoped that Tucker would view this as a challenge and work twice as hard, as he was almost certainly going to be a four-year guy anyway. He wants to leave and get those minutes ASAP with less competition in his path. Can't blame him. I wish him well.

Of course he’ll be recruited over. And Duke only wanted him once somebody left. He should’ve seen the handwriting on the wall, and if he still wanted Duke then be cool with not seeing the floor for a few years because it was obvious that’s what it was gonna be.

I’m not blaming Duke, I’m blaming him for not using common sense in the first place and then doubling down and bouncing before the 2nd semester. I say this all as an adult and not a 19 year old, though.

Curious that he wasn’t even playing in a lot of the blowouts though.

The narrative is "played poorly preseason/in exhibitions, got his spot taken by AOC, got pissy/lazy in practice, sunk further down the order, started looking for an out immediately."

The first two things definitely happened. The practice thing is all hearsay, obviously, but it fits.

AOC passed the higher-rated Tucker in the order. Just like Vrank passed Bolden and Jeter last year. Just like Thornton passed Sulaimon back in the day. He digs hustle, hard work, team play.

In response to Reply # 50

So yes, by a bit, although Kentucky is also easily sub-200 in the country bench minutes every year, save for the platoon season. Which, as stated above, reveals everything you need to know. If every guy on Cal's bench was ready to play, Cal would play them. Cal's sub-200 in bench minutes nearly every season because not every recruit can come in and give quality enough minutes right away to create platoons. It's always the dream, but rarely the reality. Same for Duke-- Duke's had K go 9 deep in seasons past (2014 the most recent one in memory, same for 2012), but their two most recent titles came from playing 7. The guys who were ready to play title-caliber basketball. It happens.

It's not like Duke has an abundance of guys on the bench who put up terrific efficiency numbers and then don't play either. When they don't play, you see low efficiency/bad shooting/high TOs in their minutes. I'm sure the same goes for who Cal gives minutes to.

Which is fine. It obviously works for him. No idea why a kid would sign up for that if he wants/expects freshman year PT and he’s pretty clearly not in that top 6-7 though. Waste of 2 years...the one sitting at Duke and the one sitting out.

In response to Reply # 51

He played 26 mpg as a freshman, and the only incoming guy who was PG-adjacent was Frank Jackson, but everyone projected him as more of a combo guard anyway. He almost certainly would've started as the only quasi-true PG on the roster.

Of course, we see now that his family is crazy and gassing him up. He's looked really bad in limited minutes at USC, and that's after sitting out and practicing with the team for a season.

The rumor was that Thornton wanted to stay at Duke but his family pushed hard for him to go somewhere he could "be the man." I always wonder how many of these transfers were fueled by the players and how many were fueled by the families.
