NFL players take their protests from the field to lawmakers by Katie Leach | Oct 24, 2017, 11:43 AM
A group of NFL players are stepping off the playing field to talk criminal justice reform with lawmakers amid weeks of ongoing protests.
The Philadelphia Eagles' Malcolm Jenkins, Torrey Smith, and Chris Long are heading to the Pennsylvania State Capitol on Tuesday to discuss issues such as mandatory minimum sentences and transparency in policing with their state legislators.
"I believe wholeheartedly in what I'm doing," Jenkins said.
Previously, Jenkins took part in the ongoing league-wide national anthem protests by raising his fist while other players took a knee, which gained the attention of President Trump who has repeatedly expressed his disdain for the demonstration.
Now, taking the protests from the field to the Capitol, Jenkins told reporters "We've seen other guys getting involved in their communities, other teams, other players. And, a lot of that comes from leading by example."
The players plan to continue their legislative efforts to reform the state's criminal justice system with the advocacy group The Players Coalition.
