i knew he had limitations and wasn't exactly the prototype for this era but i didn't realize he was such a shitty defensive player. i think he is not a "bust" but he is going to have take a big leap or adjust to a new role, a No. 3 big man who you use to exploit matchups and force subs. Not a stylistic comparison but a role comparison would be like Marresse Speights at his best. Some guy you can pick spots to do a certain thing and pay well but not too too much.

more broadly i wondre about that draft. towns, 'zingis, turner, booker ... these are the headlines and what else is there so far? maybe i am forgetting some guys.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Dude needs to get his mind right in order to capitalize on his potential, but he's currently stuck in a franchise where the execs, teammates, and fans don't want him there, and he's resorting to watching Reese Witherspoon movies for two hours just to escape his miserable fucking reality. It's a depressing reminder of the potential downside of being a super-young kid in the NBA. You may need to improve, both on and off the court, but if you fuck up and aren't mentally sound enough to take the shitstorm you will receive, it may be hard to pull yourself out. My heart goes out to him-- I really hope he gets a fresh start and a chance to pull himself together and show that he can be the same winning franchise representative that he was in both high school and college.

I'll now leave to avoid getting mad at the inevitable bait and/or pile-ons.

P.S. Please consult these insta-replies to responses I might imagine people would consider posting:
1. Yes, he did do the things that caused people to not want him there, and no, I didn't deny that.
2. Yes, he's still bad at defense, and no, I didn't deny that either.
3. Yes, I believed that he'd be a multi-year All-Star player based on what I'd seen to that point, and I wasn't the only one-- and I do still believe that, if he can get both his mind right and a new opportunity, he can have a long and successful NBA career, though my original projection ship has obviously almost certainly sailed.
4. No, neither him getting his mind right nor him getting a new opportunity is a given, and yes, it could all end poorly and/or soon for him. Which, in my opinion, would be incredibly sad for a player who did literally everything right in his basketball career up to age 19.
5. Yes, very few NBA one-and-dones had Okafor's level of off-the-court struggles as a 19 year old. I'd also argue very few players have had his level of high school and college accolades immediately followed by an 0-16 start to a pro career with a roster literally designed to lose, but hey, goes back to my point, pro careers can toss shitstorms at you, and you have to be ready to handle them, and he clearly wasn't when his pro career started the way it did. He still may not be ready to handle shitstorms. He'll have more headed his way this year, so I hope for his sake he's learning to cope.

Let's be for real, the Sixers have not accomplished anything and would welcome a guy who performed well under any circumstances. Even if that weren't the case, more consistent play would make him more attractive in a trade. The only reason he wasn't moved for a bag of dildos like Noel is that he is still under contract. He could speed up the process. I think he will have a long career in the NBA assuming he is healthy. But a star, I doubt it.

he started almost every game he played his first year. both years he got hurt. last year it wasn't like they didnt have minutes for him given the restrictions on embiid and the fact that he missed more than half the season. he has been given plenty of opportunities.

If he can just improve into an adequate defender, I’m sure he’ll be able to get on the court for somebody and put up nice numbers offensively. Can’t be too quick to write young players off that have at least shown something at times.

That said, he’s probably gotta make the most of his next legit opportunity or it will be looking real bad for him.

And tried to lose and signed up bullshit guards that weren’t even NBA players.

This is the first time they’re actually trying to win b-ball games. Obviously they’ve got Embiid in front of him - hopefully.

I can’t call someone a bust at 21 when he had a productive rookie year. If he gets a little further into his career and goes somewhere else and flops, fine.

Not sure why our FO hasn't tried to trade for...

oh, yeah it's OUR FO.

But yeah, he needs some defensive fine tuning, a little maturity (being home might help) and a team built on development. Which I guess is where we are.

Philly's on the brink and drafted 3 C's, one of which turned out to have Superstar potential (when healthy). So they can afford to be picky.

They just need to move on from it but they don't wanna sell for pennies on the dollar. Dude was a high pick.

all they did was turn 30 and succumb to injuries.

take their rookie seasons...

okafor did 17/7/block and shot 50% and the bust talk already started.

zingis did 14/7/2 blocks and shot 42% and was the best fuckin thing to ever happen to basketball.

people still waiting on zingis to be the 25/12 monster they act like he is.

people still waiting on krazy kuts to be the 23/10/7 new age PG they wanted him to be.

but okafor? oh, nah....times up.

25. "No, He's Not a Bust"
In response to Reply # 0

He had as good, if not better #'s as Porzingis and KAT as a rookie.

The Sixers have almost ruined this kid. Some of which are flaws in his game, some of which were injury driven, and a lot of which are on the Sixers management.

Either he's a bust and the process is a joke (because he'd be the 3rd lottery pick out of many that hasn't panned out due to the process) or he isn't a bust and the process is a joke (because over the course of the process, they drafted 3 centers and only 1 of which will still be on the team, albeit just as if not more injury prone)

He needs to go to a different situation. Off the top of my head, he might fit in well in a place like Washington, Boston, Memphis or Toronto, where a talented big can tip the scales. Even Brooklyn would be a decent landing spot for him.

But to call him a bust at 21, with inconsistent playing time, and being told that he's on the block, being told after a solid performance he's not gonna play, being blamed for everything going wrong with the Sixer franchise...is premature at the least and pretty unfair.

Abdul Jabbar, Muggsy Malone you
I don't know what that means but you know what I meant when I told you (c) Sean Price

I do think the 6ers are to blame for the way this was handled

If we were going to trade him, why not let him stat pad while we tanked?

= we'll get nothing, he probably walks into FA

BUT, those other 2 names, Bennett and Thabeet = BUST!

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I really wish they would do this. I am not a Dookie at all, but he has handled this pretty well and played the good soldier. I'd like to just let him get on with whatever career he can salvage at this point.

I want to dump on Colangelo here but it's clear that leaguewide interest was low. You can spin his numbers in a direction but the reality is that he wasn't all that productive, he was very inconsistent and his effort in his own end has been terrible. Unfortunate that the Sixers invested a high pick in him and got nothing but I guess the same could be said of the Lakers and Randle. Kind of a suspect draft, I thought it had like half a dozen good players in it but that appears to be an overestimate.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

No doubt Okafor would be dropping 22+ on 50% on, say, that Kings. As it stands, he going to be going somewhere that actually WINS, so let's revisit DLo being better then.

And Lonzo some shit.

In response to Reply # 56

I'm not sure if you can have an open and honest discussion w/o defaulting into an agenda

...but...

I never really thought Oak was as bad as this situation is making him out to be

Honestly, I think he's more of a victim of this new NBA run and jack 3s +120PPG stretch 4s and 5s etc...

He's a highly skilled, actually, one of the highest skilled in the post rookie big men I think I may have ever seen

He was very consistent offensively as a rookie (=given the minutes)

yes, he's trash on D

but that's what coaches are for, right?

and I can't throw him under the bus when the team is intentionally trying to lose (=the rest of his roster was trash)

Alot of philly threads are pointing out that Amir Johnson is not better than Oak (=this feels intentional)

On the LAL, DLo never found his identity IMO

He disappeared when playing off the ball

Stays with +1 assist to TO ratio when the ball is in his hands

and became expendable with Clarkson's play (they put up damn near identical numbers, and I'm assuming his contract is for less $)

if we're dismissing Oak's rookie year, can't we do the same for DLo's 17' season in BKN

?

you can't understand it with an explanation

Philly mangled his situation terribly.

Teams wanted to trade for Oak, but could never agree on a price. At one point Philly wanted too much, and at another point they drove down his price to the point where teams would rather wait them out.

He's way too talented, and you can't disregard 18/7 as a rookie. Philly was just a terrible situation for him. He'd be a beast with a PG that can get him the ball in certain spots.

I hate Duke, but I'm rooting for the kid, I know he can ball (I find myself rooting for quite a few Dukies, like Jabari and Tatum along with Oak). Philly fucked this up
