Dude needs to get his mind right in order to capitalize on his potential, but he's currently stuck in a franchise where the execs, teammates, and fans don't want him there, and he's resorting to watching Reese Witherspoon movies for two hours just to escape his miserable fucking reality. It's a depressing reminder of the potential downside of being a super-young kid in the NBA. You may need to improve, both on and off the court, but if you fuck up and aren't mentally sound enough to take the shitstorm you will receive, it may be hard to pull yourself out. My heart goes out to him-- I really hope he gets a fresh start and a chance to pull himself together and show that he can be the same winning franchise representative that he was in both high school and college.
I'll now leave to avoid getting mad at the inevitable bait and/or pile-ons.
P.S. Please consult these insta-replies to responses I might imagine people would consider posting: 1. Yes, he did do the things that caused people to not want him there, and no, I didn't deny that. 2. Yes, he's still bad at defense, and no, I didn't deny that either. 3. Yes, I believed that he'd be a multi-year All-Star player based on what I'd seen to that point, and I wasn't the only one-- and I do still believe that, if he can get both his mind right and a new opportunity, he can have a long and successful NBA career, though my original projection ship has obviously almost certainly sailed. 4. No, neither him getting his mind right nor him getting a new opportunity is a given, and yes, it could all end poorly and/or soon for him. Which, in my opinion, would be incredibly sad for a player who did literally everything right in his basketball career up to age 19. 5. Yes, very few NBA one-and-dones had Okafor's level of off-the-court struggles as a 19 year old. I'd also argue very few players have had his level of high school and college accolades immediately followed by an 0-16 start to a pro career with a roster literally designed to lose, but hey, goes back to my point, pro careers can toss shitstorms at you, and you have to be ready to handle them, and he clearly wasn't when his pro career started the way it did. He still may not be ready to handle shitstorms. He'll have more headed his way this year, so I hope for his sake he's learning to cope.
