Cmon, DC fans, let's not fall all the way off.

Didn't look good week 1. Kurt is not the answer, and definitely not worth the money he thinks he is.

We'll be 8-8 at best. What say you?

Lose Sunday and it's a wrap.
5-11 is in play.

The main thing I kept thinking watching that game Sunday is "what did you guys do all Summer?"

We were given a layup with the Philly game but blew it. They better show up or its going to get ugly quickly! I think the Rams are ripe for the taking because they flying high after whipping a Colts team that is TURRIBLE (Barkley voice) however, they gotta play!

When the score was 10-0 and we were at their 4 and threw two consecutive fade routes, I thought we were done! We had just run the ball down their throats but start throwing fades to Doctson who seem to be the ONLY route they trust him to run. But we held on...tough game next week.

But hard to figure on game day. He doesnt seem to 'fit' the offense meaning his natural movements seem out of sync with what they want him to do. Garcon (who they should have signed) was a fit, quickly in and out of breaks, tough and could catch in traffic Pryor is slow in and out and drops too many passes, especially in traffic. If this is a contract year and he is starting out like this!?!?

He struggled in the first half, it was his first pro carries but did better in the second as the went to some zone read plays (which he ran at Oklahoma). I think with some more reps in practice he'll be fine. Especially with Thompson being as explosive as he is...we dont need him wearing down so Perine is going to get carries.

Man that was a joy to watch.

Chris Thompson man.

Defense could not have played better. Brutally physical end to end and did not fatigue. Holding Oakland to a field goal late in the game after the PI call proved to me that these guys actually do have some heart. These tackles looked like they hurt dude.

This weeks Washington team looked promising on both sides of the ball (and without starting RB or TE). Will it hold next week at KC? Who knows. But the potential is definitely there.

When Lynch was slammed to the ground to prevent getting the 1st down, that was a sign the game was going to be something different...

...anything is in play.

For as messy as the offseason got, there's no denying how much better this defense is. Under Gruden we've consistently questioned what this team's "identity" was. But maybe they're finally realizing it, maybe they're determined to be physical-first on both sides of the ball.

i think we're gonna have a tough time getting the offense going. Oakland doesn't exactly have great D, KC does. and it's at Arrowhead.

i'm not sure i'm gonna make it to the end unless somehow we're still in it.

Thus far, your first round receiver toy has played about 5 games, caught one TD, and lost a game. Until he does something special again, Doctson's reputation will be "he blew the Chiefs game in 2017"

this is a weird bridge season with the receivers

it was actually somewhat wise by Cerrato 2.0:

You had to let 88 and 11 walk, and take your lumps with two young, raw talents in order to spend the money elsewhere.

One of them will need to become a true #1 in 2018 though.

you know what's making it all work (besides Kirk not Kirking):

for the first time in almost 20 fucking years (not since Chris Samuels) they drafted a goddamn offensive line.

funny how that works.

33. "Chiefs game pros and cons:"
In response to Reply # 0

Cons:
- We have no dynamic running backs. Several "guys". But watching Hunt for a full game was a revelation. Skins are talent depraved in the backfield. Perine especially may not be a pro.

- Lack of discipline from Preston Smith proved too costly in too many crucial spots. He has potential to be a special player. But committing the same penalty more than twice means it's a habit.

- Doctson blew it obviously. Hope he learns.

- lost seemingly half of the defensive starters. Hope they get healthy on bye

Pros:
- Cousins made plays and singlehandedly put them in position to win on last drive. A deserved criticism in years past was he can't improvise. He improvised down the stretch and got them where they needed to be. Masterful, shame it ended how it did.

- can't sufficiently describe my enthusiasm for this defense. Norman, Allen, Ionnidis, Kerrigan, and Swearinger in particular seem bloodthirsty. Would dread playing them if I were an opposing offense. They gassed early in the 3rd and still hung tough with a bunch of reserves chipping in. Such an inspired effort by them tonight and through last three weeks in general.

Doctson turned his body in mid air, secured the ball and put his other arm out. But when the defender fell on top of him it bounced out.

but that's typical skins ball. overall we looked good and could have won. just need more discipline on defense. it's hard to really complain about the defense because they are playing so cot damn well, but that shit on 3rd downs killed us.

some of the plays the D made were amazing. Norman ROCKING Kelce was fucking dope. and then the very next play Breeland came off that block and made a tackle out of nowhere. that shit was awesome.

but then we'd give it all right back and they scored TDs off the mistakes. smh.

and damnit i turned it off right after their winning kick. brushed my teeth and got in bed. looked on the phone checking the gram and shit and saw the final score of 29-20. i was so confused Haha. i hit my skins group text asking wtf happened, and they told me.

I love watching the guy play and he was great for WFC, but he just doesn't have the speed, quickness or route running of a guy like Boldin.

He puts up numbers with physicality, effort and attitude, and that's to his credit. But he was always a 2nd-tier WR, production-wise.

Defense starting to show some warning signs though.

No pass rush from the 2nd quarter onwards, nearly catastrophic breakdowns in the secondary.

He was throwing into single coverage, it wasn't a bad read.

Eagles are the better team right now, Wentz is better than Cousins, and WFC's offensive line is walking wounded.

I thought the team played pretty well yesterday. Wentz's two houdini acts were unlucky/impressive. The PI call on third down in the end zone was total garbage and a huge call. And the two missed 3rd and ones were bad plays by Kirk and Gruden.

but how about those other occasions where he held onto the ball too damn long and took sacks?

and yeah, the Eagles are a better team. and our 3rd down play calling was classic skins shit.

and Kurt plays well at times, but not often enough or when it really counts to justify this notion that he has that he needs to be paid out the ass.

we need to move Pryor to DB. we wouldn't necessarily need him to catch the ball then, just get to it and knock it down like he's so good at doing. and our secondary is thin af right now. haha

He would be hard to replace, but also if you pay him the $100M he's going to get next year, you know full well you're entering into a Joe Flacco situation.

It's a very hard call.

Pryor is just not a good WR.

And I like Ryan Grant but any throw that goes to Pryor or Grant needs to be going to Doctson. Get that dude as much exp as possible. That's on Gruden.

The third downs yesterday were bad football.

They need lots of talent around them to be great. Matt Ryan been super lucky with the talent and systems he has had around him, otherwise he'd be Philip Rivers.

Kirk needs a running game, badly. Gruden is not doing him any favors making him throw 40 times a game. The team needs a Brian Westbrook type RB but unfortunately, those type are not common.

I'd gladly overpay for a Matt Ryan. Most teams would, as most successful quarterbacks do need ample talent around them to be competitive. That's literally every quarterback in the league not named Brady, Rodgers, and Brees.

Which makes the decision to bank on Pryor and let Garcon and Desean go all the more confusing. Worse yet, we have a half dozen running backs on the team and none are NFL-starting caliber. It's as if they deliberately hindered Kirk's potential with his weapons.

How anyone could watch last night's game and pin the blame on Cousins is beyond me. He wasn't perfect, but boy did the run game suck, Pryor suck, and the playcalling suck.

But if Kirk had the weapons now that Matt Ryan has had his whole career, we wouldn't be questioning his ability. (But I also really despise Matt Ryan and think he is super overrated so take that with a grain of salt if you must).

I do agree that the Front office nor Gruden has given Kirk much help.

Maybe this lack of a running game is from Morris. He cursed us! Shouldn't have left Morris or Darrel Young go.

PS: Gruden unfortunately is so pig headed that he doesn't realize that he really does need a Fullback for his running game to be the most effective. While none of his RBs have been of great talent, the O-Line is definitely not the best when it comes to opening holes for RBs either.

This season might go to shit over injuries and the transition year of receivers, but the team shouldn't panic over it.

Keep Tommy Boy one more year. Try to sign Kirk (I guess?). DEVELOP DOCTSON. Maybe draft a RB (Perine and Kelly put in good effort, but neither are very talented). Let the OL heal.

Continue to try to improve the defense.

http://www.espn.com/blog/washington-redskins/post/_/id/33898/injuries-to-trent-williams-brandon-scherff-highlight-redskins-health-issues

Summary:

Trent Williams
A bad right knee that he said will require surgery to repair ligament damage whenever he stops playing this season.

Brandon Scherff
Grade 2 MCL sprain

Morgan Moses
two sprained ankles

Spencer Long
Knee/quad tendonitis, missed time in the last game

Bonus: starting-quality back up Ty Nsekhe has been out since week 3

I can't call it on the turnovers, guys like Chris Thompson - and Zeke for that matter - never just cough the ball up. It was soaked out there today.

O-line was held together by scotch tape and volunteer firefighters.

I just don't get Doctson or Pryor man. At least in Doctson's case there may be hope - maybe all of these hugely costly fuck-ups by Doctson get filed away in his head and work towards making him better. The play is way too inconsistent, when he's targeted in a big spot he usually botches it somehow, either with a drop or by running the wrong route altogether. He has everything but the focus.

Pryor however is a lost cause and, even with that build, might be out of the league soon.

At Seattle next week to put the nail in this season's coffin.

that drop was painful.

I keep yelling that he should be getting all the reps so he can develop, but damn dude.

OL injuries are a massacre at this point. Most important unit on the team and they were down their 3 best players (plus a starting caliber back up OT in Nsekhe). Even Lauvao went out and he's not that good.

"don't do anything drastic to this roster" is still my refrain.

Ioannidis broke his fucking hand? Third string starting OT got injured? At this point 6 of the top 7 offensive linemen were unavailable?

Two TEs injured in the first half.

This team is mostly doing the best it can, damn.

I’m in complete shock. Defense was coached up and executed masterfully, KC saves the season, Doctson finally delivered on his potential. Time will tell if it’s the most important win of the Gruden era, but it’s without question the biggest. They should all be proud, a true stunner.

If you hold Seattle to under 20 points in Seattle, you've done enough to win.

should out to the second string offensive line who started a 4 of the 5 positions for WFC.

I think we're seeing a shift in the NFL now - from thinking teams can thrive with unheralded cheap RBs to realizing the difference that an elite RB prospect can make. Zeke, Fournette, Dalvin Cook...those guys had an impact from jump.

I'm hopeful we address it in next year's draft. Barkley won't be there but Bryce Love may be

I put this one on Kirk and Tommy Boy.

This was coaching, play calling, and rookie-level mistakes from Kirk to close out the game.

Self inflicted loss after playing a great game for ~50 minutes.

Maybe this saves them a few millions on Kirk's contract?

Seemed like a back and forth game. Some pretty good drives by Kirk. Great TD pass to Thompson on a wheel route (who later broke his leg and I assume is out for the year). Defense keep Brees & Co from going too wild.

Driving with less than 8 mins left I figure a FG will ice the game. Instead Kirk has a great TD pass to put them up 15 with about 5 minutes left.

Breezy marches down the field for 7. WFC gets it back. A first down or two ices the game. 3rd and 1 and Perine is stopped short.

Brees goes down and gets another TD in about a minute, leaving a minute on the clock. Converted 2 pt conv means tie game.

WFC gets the ball and immediately marches downfield. Around the 35 yd line, Kirk snaps it and immediately throws it to an empty spot near the sideline. Intentional grounding. Lose yards, lose down, 10s runoff. Sacked on the next play. OT. Offense does nothing, two long runs by Ingram, FG game over.

Apparently on the intentional grounding that lost the game, the coaches signaled for a bubble screen, Kirk thought he was supposed to throw it away, and the WR didn't know any of this and was still blocking.

Shit show all around.

D.C. Sports Bog
Kirk Cousins takes you inside his brain before that intentional grounding penalty
By Dan Steinberg November 20

The NFL, according to The Washington Post’s Mark Maske, seems to believe that the last-minute intentional-grounding call that pushed the Redskins out of field goal range and led to overtime during Sunday’s loss in New Orleans was erroneously called. Quarterback Kirk Cousins wasn’t under pressure as he threw the ball to the sidelines, with the implication that he thus should not have been whistled for the crucial call.

Presented with that information Monday morning, Cousins didn’t feel much better.

“The letter to Bruce Allen or whatever they do to say, ‘We’re sorry, wrong call,’ or whatever it may be, you know, it’s tough,” Cousins said during his weekly appearance on 106.7 The Fan’s Grant and Danny program. “Because nobody will be bringing that up in February or March, when we’re making decisions about which direction to go as an organization. You know, that’s the kind of thing that we appreciate the clarification, but it really doesn’t do much. I mean, this is our careers, this is our livelihood, this is what we do. It just is frustrating when a letter is really all you get, when it had such a major impact on the direction of our lives, when we’re in it and doing it every day.”

He wasn’t being shy about that controversial call, and in fact, Cousins went into incredible depth describing the play. He acknowledged that his goal on that pass was to throw quickly and incomplete toward the sideline, but he seemed not to think that his actions met the definition of grounding.

“It was essentially like clocking it,” he told the station. “I mean, I wanted to just spike it. I wanted to throw it at Jamison shins, which would have been better. Maybe if I throw it right at Jamison’s cleats — like you do with a screen that’s dead, you just throw it at their cleats — then would have said ‘Oh, there’s a receiver in the area.’

“I just tried to do the exact same thing by just throwing it over his head out of bounds, thinking he’s still in the area, the ball’s going at him. If he had turned and looked at me and the ball had gone 10 feet over his head, they would have said ‘Oh, just an inaccurate throw.’ But I guess because he didn’t turn and look at me, they’re allowing that to affect the judgment of the call. It just gets to be a little grey.”

Why did he want to throw the ball incomplete? As Cousins explained it, when the offense works on the two-minute drill in training camp or practice, if they need a field goal and reaches field-goal range, “we pretty much play conservative at that point.” The Redskins were at the New Orleans 34-yard line, needing only a field goal to win, so Cousins thought that threshold had likely been met.

“And the call came in to run it, and so my thought process is we’re running a one back power play, and I’m gonna hand it off,” Cousins told Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier. “We’re running at all costs. And we had no timeouts left, so once runs it, basically we’ve got to kill it on second down and then the field-goal team comes out on third down and kicks it.”

But, according to Cousins, Coach Jay Gruden saw that the Saints defensive call would leave the scheduled run play “pretty much stuffed.” This might normally lead to an audible into a pass. Cousins didn’t go in that direction, though, because “this is a run at all costs play,” he said.

“The whole point of calling a run is to run it; if we want to throw it, we’d call a pass,” he said. “So I’m at the line of scrimmage, and I see Jay kind of on the sidelines, and I see what I think to be in the noise — I can’t really hear him — but I see him say ‘Throw it.’ And I’m assuming what he meant is the play’s dead, the run’s not gonna work, it’s not gonna get us , if anything we’re gonna lose yards. Right now on the 34-yard line, yards are precious.

“So I’m thinking ‘Well, Crowder and Doctson are over there, if I literally just throw it over their heads, they’re in the area, they’re eligible receivers,” Cousins went on. “Not to mention if I’m not under pressure it’s not intentional grounding, because I’m not really at risk of a sack. So I can just throw it in their general direction, and because I’m not under pressure and because they’re in the area, it won’t matter. And you saw what happened. I threw the ball and it looks like I’m throwing to nobody, but in my opinion — or before I threw the ball, my opinion was he’ll be in the general area.

“How do you define the difference between an inaccurate pass and intentional grounding, especially when there’s nobody pressuring you in the sense that you’re actually at risk of a sack?” Cousins asked. “So I don’t quite understand the rule, because if I threw the ball down the field and there was a receiver 15 yards away but I threw it so inaccurately that it was 15 yards away from him, that’s never called intentional grounding. So where is the difference between an inaccurate throw and intentional grounding? That was my struggle.”

Of course, the penalty was then compounded when no one seemed to realize that the clock was running after the subsequent 10-second run-off, which Cousins confirmed.

“I didn’t realize the clock was running,” he told Paulsen and Rouhier. “I didn’t know that. I was just trying to make sure our protection was good, because they brought a pressure and wanted to make sure we were picked up. And I felt like if we could get five, 10 yards here, who knows, maybe we’re back in field-goal range and we still have a chance. This is a really important play, so I was trying to make sure our protection was good so that if I had to go downfield, I could.”

Instead, Cousins was sacked, on the final play of regulation.

The quarterback also took issue with the hit that left him briefly stunned earlier in the second half, immediately before Washington’s successful fake punt. Cousins didn’t slide on the play, and was tackled short of a first down. Earlier in the game, he slid for a first down and then received a 15-yard penalty for taking a late hit.

“When you slide, you do kind of open yourself up if that DB wants to be stupid and use his helmet as a weapon, you pretty much make yourself available for him to do that,” Cousins told Paulsen and Rouhier. “Whereas if you try to juke him or just dive around him, yeah, you may get hit in the side but at least you’re not getting hit in the head. And I’d rather take a hit to the side than a hit to the head. … I thought that also could be flagged. I felt like the DB basically again used his helmet as a weapon to try to hit my head. I don’t understand why it’s not flagged. I don’t think we should have needed a fake punt. It probably should have been another penalty, because he’s doing helmet to helmet again. But I guess because I’m not sliding maybe the rule is different.”

I give WFC the edge since Sean Lee is still out.

He had two nice TD throws and some good runs but was otherwise bad, as he's been all year.

Dallas OL and Alfred Morris are the reason their offense did anything.

For the entire first half the DAL pass rush ran STRAIGHT into the backfield every single time like the OL wasn't even on the field. By the end of the half Kirk was (wisely) going straight into a scramble as soon as he got the snap.

Turnovers killed the team. Defense didn't play great. WRs had drops. And the 3rd string OL finally caught up to them.

Oh well.

In response to Reply # 0

I think I've made it know that I'm not a fan of KC. Between the 20s he's great. He puts up stats but in the end he simply cannot beat good teams. I think the sample size is large enough now to know this is a fact and not just a random sample.

There are some really bad QBs in the league, really bad. KC is a good QB however he's not $25 - $35 million per good and we see how many holes this team has to fill. So the organization has a choice:

- They pay KC his huge contract to the point they cannot put a team around him (see right up I-95 with what's going on with the Ravens)
- Or, they let KC walk

I would like to see somewhere in between. The best case scenario is they lock KC up for a 5 year deal at $20 million per. But I don't see this happening. KC has bought into his own hype and he thinks he's Top 5.

If they cannot get him for anything less than $25 million per year, let him walk. The organization has been rebuilding for so long what's another few years.

The Flacco comparison is a good one. Kirk is in that 2nd/3rd/middle tier of QBs. He can't make mediocre players into stars (Like Brady, Brees, Russ, etc), but he can put up good numbers (even his RZ is getting better) with great players around him.

When you have a ton of money tied up in your QB, the wild card is whether you can draft well. If you do, you can create value and talent without using up a ton of money.

Flacco's contract is a big reason the Ravens have fallen off, but so is Ozzie Newsome's drafting. Ozzie's been on a run of mediocre and bad drafting for a while now. And if you're not finding a starter or two in the mid/late rounds, your roster is going to get real expensive (or real bad) real quickly. Ask the Giants.

So if WFC actually had a front office that could draft, I think it would be smart to pay KC whatever he wants and surround him with great weapons.

But given that the GM is fucking Bruce Allen, that plan won't work.

Shame but not a surprise that Allen and Snyder chased out of town the only competent drafter this franchise has had in 20 years.

Another wild card in this is where WFC ends up in the draft and which QBs are available. If they have a shot at a good QB prospect, let Kirk walk.

It's also not a surprise that those two morons have managed to create a nearly unprecedented muddled QB situation after being handed a viable starter.

and then reconsider how valuable Cousins is

Now, to be clear, I echo almost everything you said except for the part about beating good teams. I think he's totally capable of beating good teams, but he's handcuffed by mediocre coaching and less-than-stellar talent around him. And, the truth is, that's most quarterbacks in the league = only as successful as their coaching and surrounding talent. You take a guy like Case Keenum - a career backup - and equip him exceptional coaching, pass catchers, and defense, and voila, you've got a Pro Bowler on your hands.

So I would encourage you to take a look around at every team and then make a comparison to our situation.

The obviously better situations:
Patriots
Packers
Steelers
Saints
Eagles

The probably better situations:
Chargers
Panthers
Seahawks

The comparable situations:
Vikings
Cowboys
Lions
Giants
Texans

that still leaves so many quarterbacks that Cousins is obviously better than, and a good handful that are open for debate.

If there's a way to keep him "affordably", and still draft and nurture talent, then I personally feel you have to.

People love to say that Joe Flacco handcuffed the Ravens because of the contract, but Joe Flacco handcuffed the Ravens because he just sort of sucks. In addition, there were three hall of famers on that last Ravens Super Bowl team on the defense - Reed, Ray, Ngata - and they all split, and Ozzie Newsome has whiffed on a lot of picks of late. It's more complex than "well they can't pay anybody." They brought in Eric Weddle and Elvis Dumervil via free agency and are still paying Suggs, and they also drafted CJ Mosley. The matter isn't money, it's that they suck at offense from the top of the organization to the bottom and historically have.

The truths:

1) he can definitely scheme offenses and usually has his team ready to play

2) he cannot field a competent defense to save his life and his team is sometimes completely unprepared to take the field altogether (Packers playoff game, Giants season finale last year, etc)

He’s as good as he is bad.

I'm not sold. I've never been sold on this man.

His weaknesses are obvious and he has not shown not one iota of improvement as a coach. His teams show a lack of discipline, they lack preparation, he can't run the ball (even with a good RB), and he is very slow to make any adjustments to his game plan. Nope. Is he the worst coach ever, no. But even bad coaches can make a playoff berth. He's a bad coach.

He might be a decent coordinator. His offenses are pretty good. But all the rest of the phases of being a good head coach, he lacks. He has very poor leadership skills for a head coach.

The deserved criticism of Bruce Allen is that he's an arrogant asshole. And he is.

But he's had two drafts and McCloughan had two drafts and none of these past four drafts were especially great:

2014, Bruce Allen as GM:
(no first)
2- Trent Murphy
3- Morgan Moses
4 - Bashaud Breeland

2015, Scot McLoughan as GM:
1 - Brandon Scherff
2 - Preston Smith
3 - Matt Jones
4 - Jamison Crowder

2016, Scot Mcloughan as GM:
1 - Josh Doctson
2 - Sua Cravens
3 - Kendall Fuller
4 - Matt Ioannidis

2017, Bruce Allen as GM:
1 - Jonathan Allen
2 - Ryan Anderson
3 - Fabian Moreau
4 - Samaje Perine

honestly, every one of those drafts looks the same to me - a surprising hit or two, one or two obvious duds, and no special players. Teams that take steps towards continued success usually had a year or two where they took a transformational player, one who can occasionally win a game by himself. In four years, we haven't taken one guy who matches that description.

Allen can take credit for Morgan Moses and Breeland, great picks given the spots they were taken, but in no universe was Trent Murphy worth a 2nd round pick.

McCloughan deserves credit for Scherff I guess, and his biggest hit was nabbing Crowder in the fourth, a very good player. But the back-to-back busts of Doctson and Cravens sets us back a bit, Matt Jones is awful, and Preston Smith should be giving you more for a second round pass rushing prospect.

Honestly, much like Jay Gruden who is as bad as he is good, Allen's record is as good as McLoughan's was bad. Translation: Allen is as mediocre as everyone else in the building.

The most unforgivable decision Allen has made was obviously just not figuring out the Kirk thing. That, along with not finding a way to keep Garcon, is bad.

In DC, he more than any other single person is responsible for maybe the single most important development in the franchise since Joe Gibbs unretired: actually building a goddamn offensive line. In two years he rounded out one of the best young OLs in the league.

>2014, Bruce Allen as GM:
>(no first)
>2- Trent Murphy

Good draft.

>
>2015, Scot McLoughan as GM:

>2 - Preston Smith
>3 - Matt Jones
>4 - Jamison Crowder

Also UDFA Quinton Dunbar

Very, very good draft, even with Smith looking mediocre. The Scherff pick was roundly criticized for taking a guard that high, now he's one of the best guards in the league and 2nd best OL on the team.

>
>2016, Scot Mcloughan as GM:
>1 - Josh Doctson
>2 - Sua Cravens

Plus Rob Kelly as a UDFA is good value.

Both Cravens and Doctson have had injury problems, but Doctson showed some great talent this year and Cravens had a good rookie year until he got hurt.

If you want to call them busts, that's up to you.

Ionnidis was a strong starter until he got hurt. That's a good 4th round pick.

>
>2017, Bruce Allen as GM:

>4 - Samaje Perine

McCloughan was fired like 7 weeks before the draft. We can be pretty sure that Allen didn't start the Redskins draft planning from scratch. Or if he did, he's stupider than I thought.

Either way, there's only one player of note here so far, he was kind of a gimmie pick when he fell to the Skins.

Perine looks replacement level. Allen and Moreau didn't contribute much this year so they're unknowns.
