"Michael Bennett held at gunpoint by Vegas police (swipe)"

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20604486/michael-bennett-seattle-seahawks-accuses-las-vegas-police-excessive-force-considering-civil-lawsuit

Seattle Seahawks star defensive end Michael Bennett has accused police officers of pointing guns at him and using excessive force during an incident in Las Vegas last month.

Bennett posted a statement on his Twitter account Wednesday, saying that he felt "terrified" and "helpless," and announced that he is considering filing a civil rights lawsuit.

According to Bennett, the incident occurred in the early-morning hours on Aug. 27 after the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas, when police apprehended him after hearing what sounded like gunshots in a crowded area.

Bennett said officers pointed guns at him "for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time" and ordered him to lie down on the ground.

Bennett wrote that one officer, with his gun drawn, warned him that he would "blow my f------ head off" if he moved. Another officer jammed his knee into Bennett's back and handcuffed him, according to Bennett.

Bennett said he was placed in a police car before officers confirmed his identity, realized he was not a suspect and released him "without any legitimate justification for the Officers' abusive conduct."

"They apparently realized I was not a thug, common criminal or ordinary black man but Michael Bennett a famous professional football player," he wrote.

Bennett said he has retained John Burris, an Oakland-based civil rights attorney, to investigate the incident and determine his legal options.

Burris released a statement Wednesday saying that Bennett "was unarmed, sober and not involved in any altercations or dispute at the time the police officers arrested and threatened to use deadly force against him."

Bennett, 31, said the incident is an example of the racial inequality that he is protesting by sitting for the national anthem. Bennett sat through the anthem for all four of the Seahawks' preseason games this summer and has said he will continue doing so.

"I have always held a strong conviction that protesting or standing up for justice is just simply, the right thing to do," Bennett wrote. "This fact is unequivocally, without question why before every game, I sit during the national anthem--because equality doesn't live in this country and no matter how much money you make, what job title you have, or how much you give, when you are seen as a 'N-----,' you will be treated that way."

Bennett has been a vocal advocate for former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the first NFL player to publicly protest during the anthem last season.

Kaepernick, who remains unsigned this season, tweeted his support of Bennett on Wednesday.

"This violation that happened against my Brother Michael Bennett is disgusting and unjust," Kaepernick tweeted. "I stand with Michael and I stand with the people."

The Seahawks have not commented on the alleged incident. Seahawks center Justin Britt also tweeted his support of Bennett.

Britt has stood by Bennett's side with a supportive hand on his shoulder while the defensive end sat on the bench during the anthem before the Seahawks' last three preseason games. Britt began doing that after Bennett sat alone on the bench during the anthem before the preseason opener.

Shit is disgusting.

They hate him already because they are rednecks and he kneeled during the national anthem.

But this story broke and they were like "he's a liar and a SJW. This didn't happen. I won't believe it until I see a video"

Then someone posted the video and it changed to "We didn't see what happened before the vid started. He looked like a suspect. He was dressed like a homeless person. He shouldn't have resisted"

And then I saw this gem. "What blacks should be asking is, "what are we doing that makes everybody suspect us when crimes occur?" Rather than, "how dare you suspect us?""
That was by a verified graduate of the university smh

If you're referring to some sort of monetary form of punishment, that would the Las Vegas citizens footing the bill, no? That is unless you're actually angling for some sort of criminal form of punishment and not something civil. I'd be completely stunned and shocked if that actually went down.

was that the police themselves aren't going to lose a dime if the penalty is either a civil form of punishment or a settlement paid out by Las Vegas itself.

pay police settlements out of pension funds and watch whether police "behavior" improves.

but as long as taxpayers are paying the bill, they don't give a shit.

I assumed this has happened to most black men.

I'm a 5'8" educated black man who is quietly unobtrusive and I have had a gun pointed at me three times in my life. Twice by police. Refusal to answer questions, knee in the back, etc. Honestly, I'm wondering why I always was left on a curb or face down on the ground, they let him sit on a bumper at least *sad laughter*

In no way is this meant to diminish what happened to him, it's fucking horrible. I'm just saying this is what I took as regular behavior, at least as a younger man, I never even bothered to report either incident. Just swallowed my impotent rage and was happy I got let free in one piece.

I'm from the lost black tribe of Israel, the Yos

It happens to people you work with.

It happens to people you don't work with.

It will happen tonight and the black person will go to jail over it somewhere in the country.

Reactions around the web and social media are disgusting because they lack humanity. I tire of "having to prove these actions are racist". It is absolutely demoralizing to see cops treat Michael this way because he's big and black. When white people commit crimes cops don't attack the nearest white person and say fuck their civil rights during the situation.

Yes, I've gone through similar situations and it's unreal. You can get killed and the cop will get away while your friends and coworkers condone the cops' actions as justified.

Bennett makes like $15M a year.

Even if it was a $50M settlement, I'm not sure how much better it would make him feel.

Cops sure as shit aren't going to change anything about how they operate.

He suffered no injury. Just hurt feelings. He probably won't file suit. If he does - I doubt the city settles. If it goes to trial I don't see him winning much of anything if the city is found liable at all.

I worked on cases like this in Chicago. Juries don't give a fuck unless there was some serious bodily injury. Hurt feelings ain't shit.

but there isn't any video to prove he was trying to evade police.

of course there is video when he is handcuffed but if cops are going into a casino after hearing about a fight or gun shots why wouldn't they have cams on to show it?

they said he was crouched down behind a slot machine when cops noticed him and then he took off running. Who doesn't crouch behind shit when they hear gunshots?

that's all I know
