It really seemed that, for a contract that size, it was either unload nearly/all of the money *or* get some decent players in return. Looks like they aren't kicking in that much money (MLBTR says 16mm total) and get a genuine prospect with Perez, a guy who's done a ton this year to regain his amateur shine with Cameron, and useful catching depth. There might be three MLBers out of this deal for them.
I kind of wanted the Twins to get in on this, though taking on Verlander's salary would have been totally out of character for them. Oh well. Good for Houston. Sad for Detroit, to say goodbye to a real star and a pretty obvious future HOFer, but nicely done on getting closer to being good again.

There were overlapping reports about Verlander needing to approve the trade, rejecting the trade, and ultimately approving the trade. Lots of confusion.
That was the most exciting waiver deadline I can remember. The Angels also went out and got Brandon Phillips and Justin Upton. That is really going to help their chances of making the playoffs in 2011.

He's having his best season since 2011 and he's no longer stealing 20 bases and playing respectable defense. I'm wondering if he just becomes Harold Baines in his 30s. Baines put up a line of .296/.379/.471 (129 OPS+) playing for 4 teams quietly amassing 18.1 rWAR and playing like total 60 games in the OF.
I can get behind "Professional Hitter Justin Upton".

He's been shitting on the Twins staff (not that this is difficult, but division scheduling means I have to watch it a lot) all season, which led me to the same research hole it sounds like you went down:
1. Justin Upton is 29? (thirty last week, it seems) 2. He's going to get 2500 hits and 400 homeruns just by hanging around 3. If he hits a nice stride the next few seasons, that could be 3000 and 500ish 4. I guess it's pretty easy to have a good compiler's HOF case when you become a regular at age 20.

They could have gotten better cost controlled relievers or starters for these players months ago. Verlander has a hefty price tag, and for a franchise that refused to pay the last two off seasons for pitching and still has to pay several all stars in the near future, this makes me concerned. Perez is 19 and in AA. Daz started slow, but he was expected to take time and had a good summer. Rogers is meh to me but is probably going to work out to be a AAAA level catcher/corner/DH. Two great and one solid prospect.
This absolutely had to be done, and I'm happy about the return. But man, the memories.
I started working at my current job that summer and began my career. I got married in October of that same year. My bachelors party ended up being the day of the first playoff game, against the Yankees, so we cancelled our original plans and went to a sports bar downtown to watch the game. When Magglio Ordonez hit the walk off home run to send us to the World Series I was on my honeymoon in Hawaii listening on the radio driving around Maui in our rental car. I remember that moment like it was yesterday.
Baseball was DEAD in Detroit before that 2006 year. Yeah they didn't win it all, but I'll never forget the feeling of baseball being back.
