"Weekend Soccer 08.26-27: Four Real?"

Despite the apparent weakness of the opposition, you'd have to be a curmudgeon to fail to note United have clearly been in control of things in their opening 2 games. With Matic steadying the middle, Pogba's been freed up to maraud around the field, while up front Lukaku has shown he has the combination of power, skills and speed that could be very useful to break deadlocks. Whether the return of Ibra to the club will be another positive or a hindrance to their current harmony is another matter but that'll take a few weeks to figure out. Right now the priority is Leicester's visit, which will be a good occasion for the Red Devils to test their back-line's solidity. Vardy and Okazaki have been in fine form, with both looking lively and at 2 goals already, while Mahrez has started showing some of the form that made him the player of the year in 2016. United should have be able to master the midfield and inject pace on the wings to trouble Leicester, but it will be interesting to see what happens if the Foxes score within the first five minutes, as they've done in their first two games.

Liverpool and Arsenal have so far both shown some of the exact same positives and negatives that have marked their recent seasons. Arsenal could have the edge if Liverpool shows any effects from their midweek European success, but it's tough not to see this as a must-win for the Gunners, which is not a good spot to be in, away from home at a top 4 rival.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/aug/27/paris-saint-germain-agree-deal-kylian-mbappe-monaco

Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a €155m (£143m) fee with Monaco for Kylian Mbappé and personal terms with the player, but have yet to convince Uefa that they will be able to comply with financial fair play rules if they sign the young Frenchman in the same window as paying €222m (£198m) for Neymar.

PSG, who finished second behind Monaco in the French league last season, have worked hard for the past week to try to convince their Ligue 1 rivals to let the talented 18-year-old go and while a deal has now been reached they have yet to get the transfer past Uefa.
Transfer window 2017 – every deal in Europe's top five leagues
Read more

Uefa is adamant that its FFP regulations work and the president, Aleksander Ceferin, said on Friday that it would punish clubs “severely” if they do not comply with the rules. “I am very serious,” he said on Friday. “We will try to help . We will try to advise them on FFP. But if they don’t comply we will punish, and we will punish severely.”

He added: “I am not talking about PSG. I am talking about every club in Europe. We are monitoring the situation, the transfer window is not closed yet. Trust me, we’re working on it.”

PSG were sanctioned for breaking FFP rules in 2014 after a sponsorship deal, arranged with Qatar’s tourist body, was deemed to have been of insufficient value to match the £167m PSG received for it. Manchester City, also in 2014, were fined €60m (£55m) and told that instead of naming a squad of 25 players for the Champions League the following season they could name just 21 with eight of those homegrown.

FFP was introduced by Uefa seven years ago to stop clubs involved in European competition from spending more than they earn. The basic principle is that, beyond a small loss currently set at €5m (£4.6m) over three years, clubs’ outgoings must match their incomings. Since then, as well as exempting any expenditure on infrastructure or youth development, Uefa has also allowed owners to spend an additional €30m of their own money over a rolling three‑year period.

Monaco have already sold several members of their title-winning squad with Bernardo Silva, Tiémoué Bakayoko and Benjamin Mendy all joining Premier League clubs.

Sterling chips in a deflection in the 7th minute of what was supposed 5 stoppage minutes.

Plus a red after the goal for Sterling who's been a whiny asshole all day as always.

Plus Pep spent most of the match crying about time wasting.

officiating was pretty trash all game though re: Mata's goal.

I would like to see someone NOT named Lukaku take our penalties (Pogba, Micki would be my preferred).

At least other clubs actually make wholesale changes in order to address constant failures. Our board and Wenger are fine with doing the same shit over and over hoping for different results - Wenger's lineup selections today with Bellerin out of position to appease Ox, naively playing Ramsey yet afuckingain in CM where he exposes the entire backline with his terrible discipline and drifting forward, Welbeck instead of mfing Laga, Ozil again being pushed out wide...against a team that thrives on the counter.

It was such a fucking embarrassment, most disheartened I've felt since getting thrashed 8-2 (in fact even worse, bc it makes it even more salient how other clubs actually have expectations to win while we maintain the same fucking status quo.

Ozil and Alexis wasting their damn careers on this bullshit. What a crock of shit this organization has become.

At least in the 8-2 you knew you'd lose going in. But the players all tried. It was just a shit roster.

Wenger ballsed the lineup all the fuck up today and then they quit before the kickoff
World class players just not even turning up. Sanchez is the only one above this lot. Ozil isn't.

Yeh, clearly he's not above this lot.

Otherwise, I agree with you for the most part. Sincerely the most flabbergasting lineup selections I've seen from Wenger and the team had zero belief or fight. Flat out embarrassing.
