There is still nearly an entire month left before the transfer window closes, but as exciting as the rumour-mill can be, this weekend finally brings some competitive FOOTBAW back into our lives. Well, or as close to a real game as the Charity Shield can be. Chelsea have done some moves both canny (Morata, Rudiger) and puzzling (letting Matic go to Utd), which puts into question how well they will do with a much busier schedule this season. For Arsenal things are a bit trickier. They got Lacazette which could turn out a great move, and have kept Alexis so far, which means on the surface they've reloaded. But they're still lacking the controlling midfielder their play is crying out for, and do not seem to have firm plans to get one. Expect lots more of Arsene-related hand-wringing no matter what the club does this year.

Suddenly hip Ligue 1 gets underway today, with champs Monaco hosting Toulouse, while PSG might possibly have Neymar on the field tomorrow when newly promoted Amiens visit the Parc des Princes for their first ever top-flight game.
