"Poll question: Better player: Pierce or Melo?"

obviously Pierce had the better career even without the ring, but who was the better player??

Its like ppl forgot how nice Pierce was before the Big 3, but Melo is consistently seen as some kind of generational talent with bad luck

Poll result (29 votes)
Pierce (20 votes)Vote
Melo (9 votes)Vote

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

All NBA teams: Pierce - 4 , Melo - 6.

On what basis has Pierce had the better career even without the ring?

Melo's individual accomplishments are better: more All NBA teams, scoring title, better stats.

At best (for Melo fans) it's REALLY close.

Look, we've been arguing about Melo on this board his entire career. Over a decade. I've been on every side of it. He's always overrated to one side and blasphemously disrespected by another. Well, guess what? He's much closer to the end than the beginning now, and he's looking at a career that yielded a handful of decent individual accolades and absolutely nothing noteworthy as far as winning goes. That doesn't entitle him to automatic superiority over a guy like Pierce, who is a Finals MVP and played LeBron to, at worst, a standstill they were both in their primes (Bron entering, Pierce exiting, of course). Melo's got NOTHING like that to boast about, and that trumps the fuck out of one scoring title and some gold medals.

Anthony will be in the HOF one day. He's had some success. But Pierce was a better-rounded player who accomplished more.

Interesting how rings are the be-all end-all when it fits your narrative, but when it doesn't THAT's when you account for outside factors.

They beat Philly, Detroit and Indy in a two-year span. That's as many series wins in two seasons under Jim O'Brien with Don 'Toine and a bunch of ragtag fucks as Melo has won in his whole career. Pretty lazy effort there, man.

Not sure why the "in a 2 year span" is important because while that's true, so is "3 series in a 9 year span".

Acting like Pierce's pre-KG teams were more successful than Melo is an incorrect narrative.

Melo, one trip to the conference finals. Pierce pre-KG, one trip to the confereince finals. Melo, one trip to the second round, Pierce pre-KG, one trip to the second round. What I said was that before Garnett/Allen, Pierce had won as many series as Melo has in his whole career. That's a fact. The in a two-year span is also a fact added for emphasis.

So yes, prior to KG's arrival, Pierce had already had as much playoff success as Melo has in his whole career. Yeah, regular season the Nuggs won more games but we aren't talking about that. Are you going to cyse the Utah Jazz now or does this signal the end of this weak-ass "rebuttal?"

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I am not that someone.

Of course this is all just looking at an arbitrary period when the Celtics were extremely poorly run and basically got good by accident (smart coaching hire, though the Joe Johnson trade put a limit on how far they could go). Once they had competent management all they did was win a title, have a nice playoff run and then go to Game 7 of the finals again. Let's not poo-poo Pierce's contribution either, he was the Finals MVP. You can spin and spin here, nothing is putting Melo past Pierce. This has nothing to do with agendas because as you will recall I hated Pierce. Melo is just a nuisance, his name pops in conversations where it doesn't belong. Pierce was a legit rival, one of the craftiest (read: fucking annoying) players ever.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

24. "Pierce, obviously"

Could get it done in more ways, more contexts, at both ends, etc. Even without a ring I would take Pierce. Obviously he had a ring and was one win away from another. I will also go out on a limb and predict that Melo will never have the sort of old-man glory that Pierce did in DC. It's not a HUGE gap between them but it's very clear that Pierce was better.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

so yea melo is oks whipping boy going on like 4 years in a row

but yea only way this is even close in ppls mind is Melo basically underachieved
from being like a projected top 50 player of all time, talent wise

while pierce treaded water for years and then overachieved in his second act
