"Kyrie requests a trade. LeGM blindsided and disappointed (swipe)"

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20124505/kyrie-irving-seeking-trade-cleveland-cavaliers

Kyrie Irving is ready to end his run with the Cleveland Cavaliers, as league sources told ESPN that the guard has asked the team to trade him.

The request came last week and was made to Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. Irving has expressed that he wants to go play in a situation where he can be a more focal point and no longer wants to play alongside LeBron James, sources said.

Irving's agent Jeff Wechsler would not confirm or deny whether Irving asked for a trade.

"Kyrie and I had a meeting with Cavs leadership where we discussed many different scenarios in reference to Kyrie and his future with the team," Wechsler told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. "The basis of those discussions and what went on in those discussions are between the Cavs and us. We are respectfully going to keep those private."

The Cavaliers parted with general manager David Griffin last month after they couldn't come to an agreement on a contract extension. Cleveland has yet to name Griffin's replacement, and franchise centerpiece James has reportedly expressed concern about the team's direction.

James was informed of Irving's request and was blindsided and disappointed, sources said. Other members of the team have learned of Irving's intentions in recent days as well.
News of the request comes days after Irving told Sports Illustrated that the Cavaliers were in a "peculiar" place this offseason.

"I understand we're in a very peculiar place," Irving told the magazine. "We just have to, you know, make sure that all our pieces are aligned first, and then we go from there. It's the summertime, a lot of craziness going on in the NBA."

Irving has been with the Cavaliers since they made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft. After miring through three losing seasons, Irving and the Cavaliers' fortunes changed with the return of James. The Big Three of James, Irving and Kevin Love have reached the past three NBA Finals, winning the title in 2016.

How to handle Irving's situation is clearly complex for the Cavs, as James can be a free agent next summer. Irving has three years and $60 million left on his contract, but he can opt out of the final year before the 2019-20 season.

By asking for a trade, Irving would be willingly giving up the chance to qualify and sign a "supermax" contract with the Cavs in 2019. This provision, installed in the just started collective bargaining agreement, was meant to deter star players from leaving their teams as they came up on their third contract. This is when numerous stars want to move, as has played out with Kevin Durant, Gordon Hayward and Paul George.

After winning the Eastern Conference title in May, Irving described his closeness with James and how staying together can benefit them.

"When you get to that level of trust and you allow someone to come into a friendship that extends well off the court," Irving said, "and you understand how great this era can be if we are selfless to the point where we don't think about anything else except for the greatness of our team and what we can accomplish."

Irving had a good relationship with Griffin, who was a point man in selling Irving on a five-year contract extension in 2014 despite the team coming off four consecutive losing seasons.

Griffin understood Irving's desires for his career had to be managed and worked regularly both to challenge Irving and, at times, soothe him. Coach Tyronn Lue is also a strong supporter of Irving and has been a strong defender when his game -- which was sometimes more shoot first than pass first for a point guard -- came under criticism.

When Irving signed his deal, he expected to be the franchise player for the foreseeable future. But about two weeks later, James arrived from Miami. The sudden change of situation rocked Irving, and he has vacillated at times over the past three years about working as a secondary star to James and the original plan of having his own team.

He discussed the challenge during last month's NBA Finals.

"Having just a tremendously great player like that come to your team and you see yourself being one of those great players eventually and then he ends up joining it and then now you have to almost take a step back and observe," Irving said. "Finding that balance is one of the toughest things to do because you have so much belief and confidence in yourself. ... Selfishly, I always wanted to just show everyone in the whole entire world exactly who I was every single time."

With this in mind, Irving considered requesting a trade following the Cavs championship last season but decided against it, sources said.

Irving, a four-time All-Star, has assembled some terrific numbers during his six-year career. Last season, he averaged a career-high 25.2 points and 5.8 assists per game while shooting 40.1 percent on 3-pointers. For his career, he has averaged 21.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.

However, Irving has not excelled when playing without James. Last season, the Cavs were outscored by 90 points in 574 minutes when Irving played and James didn't. In the playoffs, they were outscored by 30 points in 61 minutes. In the Finals against the Golden State Warriors, the Cavs were outscored 37-13 when Irving was on the court and James was off.

don't be a stranger...

so I'm guessing its safe to say that LeBron isn't giving teammates nor free agents much confidence that he plans on staying in Cleveland after next season....

how bout Kyrie for Anthony Davis..... Cavs sign D.Rose and give him Bron and AD a shot to make a run out the east...

I really seem to have failed in getting the message out to y'all last year. The Kyrie shit is OVER. I won. Nigga a perennial AS and sitting on 28 ppg for his NBA Finals career. There ain't anything else for me to do there.

Now see, I done already said I'm rolling with Tatum and the celts this season but y'all ignored it and now I'll be the nigga accused of tryna move goalposts...cause y'all constantly tryna dictate MY wins and losses while ignoring your own.

You iDenim rocking, bitch, work on your bum ass cheers for MY NIGGA SAVING YOUR FRANCHISE.

there is no way for you to win a Laker agenda....

none...

especially with Magic Johnson running the show...Bruins and Tar Heels jerseys hanging in the rafters....

now with a UCLA star point guard..... yes....the 5th impactful Point guard to enter the NBA from UCLA in the last decade or so while Duke has put 1.....that's right..1 impactful point guard into the NBA in the history of the planet.......

but now with Ball running the show....it's a lose lose for you..

BI will be solid....but Magic and Lonzo got him now champ...go back to sleeping through west coast games then trying to fool people into believing you actually watched the players you're talking about

DAMMIT.

Fucking GM Bron and his wish washy bullshit. Now Ky wants out as Bron angles his way out of town via sources close to the situation. There's no way we can trade Ky.

*EDIT*

He's mad about his role in the offense and wants to be the number one option.

If Bron is out and he's left with Love and Thompson, that would make him the #1 option by default. Then in two years, he's eligible for the supermax

I don't see how trading him to the Spurs works if he wants to change his situation if he really wants to be in the spotlight. He'd be behind Kawhi over there.

Sick of the East getting weaker. Trade him to Atlanta or something.

Why on earth would he want to leave Cleveland for Miami or New York from a competitive standing? That makes no sense to me.

Either that or he's tripping.

Even if he doesn't like Bron and/or his shadow it's not the smartest move.

I'm curious if he wants to go to a contender or just anywhere he can be the man.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20125297/lebron-james-intervene-cleveland-cavaliers-decision-kyrie-irving

LeBron James intends to let the Cleveland Cavaliers front office and owner Dan Gilbert take the lead in dealing with Kyrie Irving's trade demands, sources told ESPN.

Both the franchise and James were rocked when Irving asked the team to trade him last week. James was informed after Irving told the Cavaliers and was unaware of the guard's feelings, sources said.

EDITOR'S PICKS

Sources: Kyrie seeks trade to evade LeBron
Kyrie Irving -- one part of Cleveland's Big Three that has reached three straight NBA Finals -- has asked the Cavaliers to trade him so he no longer has to play alongside LeBron James, sources told ESPN.

Could the Cleveland Cavaliers win a Kyrie Irving trade?
Kyrie Irving is ready to leave LeBron. Should the Cavs make a move? Kevin Pelton examines possible trade options.
Irving did talk about the meeting to several other teammates, a league source told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

As the Cavs consider their options, sources said James has expressed to the team that he is focused on his offseason workout regimen and is planning to report to training camp with the intention of leading his teammates to a fourth consecutive Finals -- no matter who those teammates are.

This follows the pattern James has taken with the Cavaliers in recent years. James is always kept aware of the franchise's moves and sometimes will reach out to potential new players to discuss the team but hasn't wanted to be a leader in those decisions.

The Cavs have three choices: Reject Irving's plea and not trade him as he has two years (plus an option year) left on his contract; find a package of young players and draft picks; or find a deal for veteran players as they deal with the reality that James can be a free agent after the 2017-18 season.

The timing of Irving's demand is unfavorable to the team in the trade market, as both Jimmy Butler and Paul George, stars the Cavs attempted to acquire, have been dealt in the past month.

Figuring out a strategy with all these scenarios will be challenging for Gilbert and his front office, which is currently led by acting general manager Koby Altman.

Gilbert has met with Altman about the future several times. They have discussed assembling a leadership team with Altman as the permanent general manager, and sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that Altman's hiring is imminent.

Teams that might make sense:

Phx - Lots of young talent and with at least a year of Bron + a finals trip, Cavs would be good for the future. Phx could send - Bledsoe, Bender, Len or maybe Booker, Bledsoe and Bender. Ky, Josh Jackson, Chriss is a good core.

Minny would have made sense but they signed Teague and can't include him in a deal yet I don't believe.

Philly - Why wait on Fultz? Send him and a bunch of salary cap filler. Ky, Simmons, Embiid

Boston - IT, Brown, Zizic maybe

Orlando - They have a lot of odd talent they could package.

Sacramento - See orlando

Denver - Faried, Murray, Beasley, Chandler?

Mil - Brogdon, Monroe, DJ Wilson, Future 1st

Detroit - Reggie Jax and Drummond

If Kyrie's reasoning is due in part to wanting to be ball dominant, then he'll still have to deal with worst in Philly with that offense being piloted by Simmons who'll go through frustrating growing pains in his first year, and Embiid being the main focal point when he's on the floor. Going from 2nd to 3rd cog on a team that isn't there yet could be why he didn't even bother thinking of that as a situation.

if you can turn an untested rookie, even a #1 pick, into a 25 year old that has 24/5/4/1.5 in 50 playoff games and a ring...you do that and worry about your teenagers later.

I mean, sure I'd take him, but not for any of the big three. Kyrie has to get significantly better to be the best player on a 5 seed, and I've seen no effort that he's willing to put in the consistent effort on a night by night basis to lead a team. Plus he's taking the ball and shots away from dudes, and we have all our dudes on good contracts and under team control for a long time.

plus, what kind of player do you think Fultz is? you have 16 shots per game going up from that position regardless.

Laugh if you want to, but that's what #1 picks turn into. And I've got Embiid for 5 more years, Simmons for 7, and Fultz for 8. I'm not trading that for a guy who can leave after 2.

And as we all know, Kyrie's teams have yet to play at a playoff level unless he's with Lebron. Kyrie and Embiid are admittedly intriguing, because Embiid covers all manner of defensive flaws. But let's not pretend we'd be adding a proven superstar. At best, he might be able to be 16-17 james harden, but I don't want to watch that ball hoggy shit, and that shot doesn't work in the playoffs.

Bottom line is, I like our hand just fine. Letting these dudes grow together is the best shot at a title.

yall sit around and slob on the Warriors, but as soon as Kyrie's name comes up the cognitive dissonance kicks in

cant fetishize the Warriors and then claim that Kyrie isnt certified as fuck after lighting them on fire and winning a ring

finally, the #1 overall pick isnt what you think it is. Of the last 20 #1 overall picks, only a handful became top 10 overall players, and even fewer for an extended period. Yao and DRose were felled by injuries (uh oh...), D12 had a short plateau, Blake has had top 10 seasons but is arguable, Davis is suspect as hell, and then there's Bron. Six guys in the last 20 years that even had SEASONS as a top 10 player, much less a consensus status.

Trading Fultz and some "assets" for Kyrie would be the smartest move the Sixers have made in years.

Stephon messed up by requesting that trade away from Minny. Ky had a bigger role as the number one so why is it hard to let someone else share the load?

Ride the wave and don't request a trade over not being the number one option. We saw what number one option Ky without any help accomplished. Hold it down for a year, Bron leaves and it's your team. Why is this so damn hard to figure out?

so he wants to branch out and be *THE MAN* and lead a team on his own..yea he couldnt do it when he was younger but hes been thru some shit and prob learned something(s) along the way.

he's betting on himself. kudos to him.

harden did it and it paid off. i dont see why kyrie isnt allowed to try either. his best chance at winning another ring is probably with lebron but if he thinks he can build a contender somewhere else and be the alpha dog, good for him.

i think he ends up in Miami..just my guess.

OKC could have been the class of the West. They never made it back to the finals. Harden never even sniffed the finals with Houston.

Their offer was around $1.5M less per year than Houston. Are you telling me that multiple years with KD and Russy wasn't a better situation than with a bunch of revolving door personnel that despite overachieving at times never made the finals? How?

He got what he wanted as far as being the No. 1 guy. The money, eh, not a huge difference. The competitiveness? He lost in that respect. Right now you could say the Rockets are in a slightly better spot than OKC but so much has happened since Harden left. If OKC had their big three in tact, the whole balance of power in the West shifts. You really can't say that about this Houston team or any other Harden has been on.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Is anyone saying the Cavs GAF where he wants to go? The word is that he submitted a list of preferences, but they don't have to adhere to them. I heard a rumor about Phoenix being interested but it sounds like BS. Booker+Bledsoe for Kyrie+peripheral consideration. Seems like a hustle-backwards move, unless Bledsoe is about to fall apart completely

LeBron will be a Cav this season and they have a free pass to the finals. If he decides to leave next year, fine, mass exodus. But why leave now?

Feeling like he's the dumbest owner running ship since Sterling. Lebron probably pleading the 5th on questions about sticking around after the season certainly doesn't help either, but that concern is greatly minimized had they say... keep their GM around who was grinding on getting PG

In response to Reply # 0

Presumably it's Fox + Hield + First round pick + something else. Fox is definitely the centerpiece of the deal.

To that I say hold it and let us see how these players develop until the all-star break. We don't have to trade Ky now anyway. This is the dumbest move in NBA history on Ky's part coming off a finals appearance in a greatly weakened east. Best believe absent of the greatest trade offer in sports history Ky's ass goes west somehow. If Sac then Phoenix if not Phoenix then who knows. Maybe LA? Going to the Lakers for a deal centered around Lonzo gets rid of LA as a destination for Bron.

he sees Bron peepin Lonzo in summer league..

he hears Bron's agent is sending high signs to the Lakers...

He's scared that Bron's gonna try to shake and join Lonzo who's showing signs of being next level.....

so Kyrie decides to preemptively bounce to find another landing spot for his all Becky parties...so he's not left holding the bag while Bron treats the nba like its a premier soccer league with cats bouncing from team to team....

141. "Report: Kyrie Irving believes LeBron James leaked trade request (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

this story gets better and better

http://nba.nbcsports.com/2017/07/23/report-kyrie-irving-believes-lebron-james-leaked-trade-request/

Kyrie Irving reportedly requested a trade from the Cavaliers, noting his desire to leave Cleveland was based on parting ways with LeBron James.

That all remained under wraps for a couple weeks.

Why did it become public now?

Stephen A. Smith on ESPN:

According to my sources, they believe LeBron James had everything to do with news getting out that Kyrie Irving wants to be traded, because Kyrie Irving and his representation and others met with the Cavaliers a couple weeks ago, and not a word got out until recently. They believe that LeBron James got word of it and was put off by it and leaked it. I’m not going to accuse LeBron of such a thing. I don’t know that to be true at all. But I know that’s what Kyrie Irving believes.

To reemphasize, Smith is not reporting that LeBron leaked Irving’s trade request, just that Irving believes LeBron did. That alone speaks to their disconnect.

Why would LeBron leak it?

Just speculating, but maybe to ruin Irving’s chance at a smooth exit. Irving is trying to bail on LeBron, and LeBron might take that personally. Leaking the trade request would be in character for LeBron as a passive-aggressive response.

But the trade request becoming public also hinders Irving’s trade value – which hurts LeBron’s team. However, people don’t always act logically when they’re upset. And maybe the Cavs won’t be LeBron’s team long enough for it to matter.

Again, though, nobody is reporting LeBron actually leaked it. Irving’s reported accusation means enough in itself.

In response to Reply # 141

The first leak often drives the court of public opinion and in this case it's been "kyrie wants to leave Bron bc he'd rather be the man than actually win". Bron comes out looking like the back-stabbed Julius Ceasar while clearing the way for his departure.

He has certainly learned from the shellacking he got over the "announcement" and his PR game has been excellent...highlighted by him controlling the narrative of returning to the Cavs as "coming home" rather than "going to a team with a tremendous amount of assets allowing him the most longevity in competing for rings".

Teams will be be competing against each other. If one team low balls cle bc ky wants out, another team will swoop in with a better deal.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Yeah the owner is sh!tty. Guess what, 97% of the owners in the history of the league are sh!tty.

People won't admit, but this says A LOT about Bron's leadership.

Also, in general, it is pretty bad when the off-season is this much more interesting/surprising than actual play.

unless by "his own game" you meant "the same game everyone else is dealing with."

which, would be accurate, but redundant.

That's what I been saying the WHOLE FUCKING TIME.

FIVE people took more shots than Kyrie Irving last year FIVE. This dude is mad the "team is not his" in Bron's contract year as Bron is positioned to leave. All Kyrie has to do is stay and the team is "his". Be clear Bron is not dumb and will not push to be the #1 option in year two or three of his next deal. Ky wants out on a championship team that just reached the finals. He is heralded as the Cavs savior for staying put next year. We don't have to trade him because Koby is not an idiot. He trades Ky then Bron leaves thus leaving KLove and pieces left on the roster.

Does Ky really think his 5.5 assists per game are enough to push his new team past Golden State?

so we still going with the "he just didn't want to be stuck on the Cavs if Lebron leaves" narrative?

https://theundefeated.com/features/cleveland-cavaliers-kyrie-irving-lebron-james/

“Kyrie isn’t saying he’s better than LeBron and should be seen that way,” a close confidant of Irving’s told me. “He’s saying he’s not about to let LeBron ‘SON’ him … treating him like he’s the child and LeBron’s the father or big brother he’s supposed to look up to.

“Kyrie knows he’s a franchise-caliber talent. He wants to be treated like it. And he’s tired of hearing about what LeBron needs, and he’s damn sure tired of hearing LeBron sound like he always needs more. As if the crew they have isn’t enough.”

... Irving could’ve pointed in a variety of directions (owner Dan Gilbert, specifically) as the cause of his irritation.

Privately, he pointed right at James and didn’t want to play second fiddle to him next season. Tired of flagrant preferential treatment, James’ indecisiveness about his future and James’ ability to manipulate storylines in his favor, Irving has had it.

the constant wanting the "supporting cast" changed..and shuffled...and having it actually happen.... that's always been something that I wasn't feeling about LeBron.... I mean people talking about him coming to LA.... I'm cool..he'd have to leave that GM shit in Cleveland.... I can imagine Kyrie whose hitting his prime as a star..seeing the team completely catered to Bron....thinking he may leave again...he's not trying to be the jilted side man and wants things his way now..

really not mad at him....

him for Wiggins would be kind of ill...Cleveland needs to get something back they can build around post bron if necessary...

All Cavs fans are tired of the "will Bron leave" angle because it hurts the organization's chances of winning. We can't make trades if people don't know if Bron will stay in Cleveland. It's stopped us from in no particular order:

Amare Stoudemire in his prime
Chris Bosh, allegedly, to form a big 2 during the decision debacle
Paul George
Carmelo Anthony

KY DOES NOT PLAY SECOND FIDDLE TO LEBRON. 5 people in the league took more shots than Kyrie Irving last year so this point is utter bullshit. None of these people are Cleveland Cavaliers by the way. Ky should've requested concessions for his people to get roles with the Cavs during his negotiation as he was/is all we have left. This is the equivalent of Nick Van Exel demanding a trade because he doesn't have the same prestige within the organization as Shaq.

Where's Ky going to get traded to that doesn't leave the Cavs in a shitty place with bad contracts or terrible players? He lacks a no trade clause so technically he can go anywhere if playing in Cleveland is that bad... If Ky wants out then he needs to get his trade value up so we can not get fleeced. We do not have to trade Ky for anyone at this point and he can pout all he wants, take shots at Bron on IG all he wants, or retire if going to three NBA finals in three straight years next to Lebron is such an issue. Pull a Carson Palmer if it's that bad.

Criteria for Ky's push for a trade to not be an L:
Reach more finals than Lebron without Lebron on the team
Average 8.5 assists for the rest of his career
Miss no more than 10 games per season moving forward
At least five all-NBA defensive team selections
Average 54 wins moving forward for the rest of his career on his new team as the #1 option with team catered to him.

Nah, he's got to get to four w/o Bron as #1 option and reach eight to be considered on par with Bron. The clock is ticking hard as shit. Assume Ky stays and leaves in 2019. If he can reach eight finals w/o Bron from then on as #1 option then he's on par with Bron then this request is not an L. If he goes to two straight finals then the argument changes to eight straight NBA finals.

We're not trading him to the Boston Celtics but if he goes there then this is a possibility especially if they add an elite rim protector. The Celtics in a weak east without the dominant Cleveland Cavaliers should easily be able to do this with Ky at the helm.

Other than that his choices are void unless he waits for his contract to expire and become a free agent. We aren't trading him for a box of dildos and his new gives up all their best assets to get him. If Ky goes then it needs to be to Phoenix for Bledsoe, Josh Jackson, and a first round pick.

*EDIT*

The Cavs agree with me apparently:

http://nba.nbcsports.com/2017/07/30/report-cavaliers-would-pull-trigger-if-suns-put-eric-bledsoe-josh-jackson-in-kyrie-irving-trade/

“If that deal (Bledsoe, Miami first rounder and Jackson) for Irving was there, it’d be done by now,” a league source with knowledge of the Cavs’ thinking told cleveland.com.

So yeah Ky can go to Phoenix since playing in Cleveland for championships year in and out is such a bad thing.
