Two years of a star and you get two young guards under team control and a top-10 pick. In a broad sense that's great return. Bulls are in for a full rebuild so they start with three pieces. With Minnie they probably had too many young players. Thibs gets a player he knows and a guy who should make the pieces fit into place better. Strong two-way wing and a leader for the team.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Lauri Markkanen?

Minny gets a star and played better without Lavine anyways, Bulls get a new backcourt and #7.

This really doesn't blow up Minnie's spot. They plug Butler into Lavine's spot in the rotation (and then some), Rubio stays at the 1 and they get another player nine spots later.

Lavine's going to be fun as hell running out there for Hoiberg.

*Local media in Minny has been talking about how Zach looks to be in the best shape since he got in the NBA, so I'm sure he will.

the finn is a one-dimensional player for now. patton is also a pretty good shooter (aside from the foul line) and an athletic big man. he could at least play the same minutes for minnie ultimately if not be a better player. why did the bulls pass on dennis smith?

And the 7ft McDermott pick guarantees it.
LaVine gonna miss the whole season.
Wade gonna get traded or minimized.
Top 3 pick.

For once the shortsighted, risk adverse nature of our front office will hopefully pay off

The deal
Bulls get: Guards Kris Dunn and Zach LaVine, No. 7 pick of 2017 draft
Timberwolves get: Guard Jimmy Butler, No. 16 pick of 2017 draft
Chicago Bulls: F
After Chicago reportedly demanded multiple high draft picks (including the one that ultimately landed No. 1 overall) from the Boston Celtics at the trade deadline, it's stunning to see the Bulls deal Butler for such a paltry package.
In Butler, the Bulls had one of the most valuable player contracts in the entire league. Butler, who rated third in the league in wins produced based on ESPN's real plus-minus (RPM) behind LeBron James and Stephen Curry in 2016-17, has two more guaranteed years remaining at $18.7 and $19.8 million before a player option for 2019-20 (also for $19.8 million) that he's sure to decline barring injury. Over those two years, I project his production as worth about $90 million, giving Butler more than $50 million in surplus value to his team. That ranks 10th in the league.
Clearly, Chicago is valuing Dunn like the elite point guard prospect a handful of teams thought he was during the draft process this time a year ago and LaVine as a guard with star potential. Those assessments don't hold up to stronger scrutiny.
Given his age, Dunn was never a favorite of my statistical draft projections. He ranked 18th among last year's prospects in my stats-only projections and seventh when his draft slot (fifth overall, which also is predictive) was taken into account.
Dunn's performance as a rookie reconfirmed those concerns. He shot just 28.8 percent from 3-point range on 2.0 attempts per 36 minutes, and he wasn't much better inside the arc, at 40.4 percent. Among the 282 players who played at least 1,000 minutes last season, Dunn's .432 true shooting percentage ranked dead last.
On the plus side, Dunn showed strong defensive potential, and he played a little better off the ball after Minnesota coach Tom Thibodeau began playing him alongside pass-first point guard Tyus Jones. It's true that point guards develop later than players at other positions, so we shouldn't think of Dunn as a finished product at age 23.
That said, no objective analysis of Dunn's rookie season suggests he's likely to develop into an NBA starting point guard, which is how the Bulls are almost certainly valuing him in this trade.
Then there's LaVine, who showed exciting scoring ability before a torn ACL ended his 2016-17 campaign in early February. His 18.9 points per game last season were the sixth most by a player age 22 or younger, trailing Timberwolves teammates Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Devin Booker and Jabari Parker. LaVine accomplished that on good efficiency, posting a .576 true shooting percentage.
The problem is on the defensive end of the court. LaVine is a poor individual defender whose team defense instincts are lacking. He also generates few steals and is a nonfactor on the defensive glass. LaVine's minus-2.4 defensive RPM ranked in the league's bottom 30. To become something more than a potent sixth man, LaVine will have to improve defensively.
Worse yet, LaVine is entering the final season of his rookie contract. A realistic timetable for his recovery from ACL surgery makes it unlikely LaVine will be back for training camp, meaning Chicago will probably have to decide on a possible extension for him before seeing him take the court. The Bulls can wait for LaVine to become a restricted free agent and decide whether to match any offer, certainly, but at that point, he would be more likely to be fairly paid than the kind of bargain Chicago should have been seeking as part of a package for Butler.
Without being in the room for trade talks, it's tough to know what kind of offers the Bulls passed on to make this deal. But given that Dunn and LaVine should have relatively little trade value and Chicago had to give up its own first-round pick to move up just seven spots (a move equivalent to the value of the 23rd pick, per my trade value chart), it's hard to imagine there wasn't a better deal available.
If this truly was the best the Bulls could do for Butler right now, then I'm not sure I understand the urgency to move him. In the worst-case scenario, where Butler's trade value eroded further, Chicago could have just held on to Butler and tried to compete in the Eastern Conference during his prime.
I get the argument for moving Butler because the Bulls aren't particularly competitive with him, but not if this is all they could get in return. This package doesn't set Chicago up for a future any brighter than the eighth-seed purgatory the team was already in.
Minnesota Timberwolves: A+
For a year, we've been waiting for Thibodeau's regime to make a win-now move. The Timberwolves resisted last summer, spending modestly in free agency to conserve cap space for this year, and at the trade deadline. Now that this deal has finally come, it's far better than anyone could have imagined or perhaps even dreamed.
My fear was that Minnesota would continue to overvalue Dunn, moving starting point guard Ricky Rubio for pennies on the dollar to clear room for Dunn in the starting lineup. While we don't know if the Timberwolves will keep Rubio, the organization didn't hesitate to move on from Dunn when he fell short of expectations. And if you're as down on Dunn and LaVine as I am, the Timberwolves didn't do much to hurt their long-term future.
It's still a little early for Minnesota to really contend in the Western Conference. Wiggins is 22 and Towns won't turn 22 until November. But given their age, another year of learning Thibodeau's defense and their hope of improving their bad luck in close games, the Timberwolves were likely to improve by simply bringing back the same roster. Now, Minnesota should be considered heavy favorites to make the playoffs for the first time since reaching the 2004 Western Conference finals.
Amazingly, assuming Nikola Pekovic's salary is medically excluded (the Timberwolves recently waived the center, who didn't play at all last season due to injury) and Minnesota renounces the rights to restricted free agent Shabazz Muhammad, the team could still clear nearly $20 million in cap space to add to this group.
Barring a Rubio trade, the idea of pairing Paul Millsap with Towns in the frontcourt is probably off the table, but the Timberwolves can shop for a lower-cost upgrade at power forward to complement Towns and Gorgui Dieng. (One possibility? Nikola Mirotic, a restricted free agent who doesn't appear to be in the Bulls' plans now that they drafted Arizona forward Lauri Markkanen with the pick they acquired in this trade.)
While this mix isn't perfect -- Rubio, Butler and Wiggins don't offer enough shooting as a perimeter trio -- 45 wins is well within Minnesota's capability next season, and 50 wins is a distinct possibility. The Timberwolves have the next couple of years to try to win enough games to convince Butler to stick around long term. But that worry is for another day. As of tonight, Minnesota is a huge winner.

That's the best revenge you can think of.

Thibs chose exactly the right time, when Forman and Paxson started panicking after negotiations with other teams hit a wall. He knew these guys like the back of his hand, he knew their jobs were on the line and played them beautifully. I would not be surprised, if some of the Bulls staffers were feeding Thibs inside info all this time, just out of hatred for GarPax.

61. "It's time to call the Jimmy Butler trade a win-win."
In response to Reply # 0

Tom Thibodeau knew.

Whether out of hatred or habit, plenty of people excoriated Bulls management for trading one of the NBA’s best 15 players in Jimmy Butler to Thibodeau’s Timberwolves last June.

Summarizing the stereotypes, Zach LaVine was a risk, coming off surgery to repair his left ACL. Kris Dunn was a bust, a broken-down shell of a former lottery pick. And Lauri Markkanen was an unknown, a soft European headed the way of Andrea Bargnani.

But Thibodeau knew. To get a lot, you have to give up a lot.

“Zach is going to be terrific,” Thibodeau said in an interview last July at the Vegas Summer League. “He’s a great worker. He puts a lot into it. He has made great strides each year. And he’ll continue to because of the way he approaches things.

“Kris started putting work in as soon as we told him to this offseason. He never missed a day. That tells you a lot.”

And Thibodeau valued Markkanen so highly that the Timberwolves had planned to select him if they hadn’t traded the No. 7 pick to the Bulls.

This wasn’t just Thibodeau placating his former employer. The former Bulls coach knew exactly what he traded to get Butler.

“You have to make the decision of where you are with your window,” Thibodeau continued back at summer league. “Both of our windows matched up. It was a good deal for both teams. They got quality players, and we obviously got an elite player.”

Fast-forward six months.

Butler has vaulted into most valuable player talk by leading the Timberwolves to a top-four seed in the vicious Western Conference, where only the Warriors rival their intraconference mark. At averages of 21.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2 steals, Butler is posting nearly identical marks as last season, when he earned All-NBA third-team honors.

That’s an elite player.

LaVine made his debut Saturday — albeit on a 20-minute limit — look about as effortless as one could after an 11-month layoff. That’s testament not only to LaVine’s work ethic and skill but his athleticism.

“He gives you the ability at the end of the shot clock when you don't have anything to just rise up and freeze a defender and make a shot with a high degree of difficulty,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “That's a skill, obviously, that you have to have at this level. Zach, at times, makes the game look very easy.”

After missing the first four games because of an open dislocation of his left index finger, Dunn has come on strongly enough to at least create debate whether LaVine ultimately will represent the centerpiece of the trade. His averages of 13.8 points, 6.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds at least double — and in the case of scoring, quadruple — his averages from last season, though in 12.5 more minutes per game.

And remember: Thibodeau was high on Dunn even before this season.

Perhaps more importantly, Dunn consistently has displayed a fearlessness and kind of short memory you need to become elite. His game-winner Wednesday against the Knicks in double overtime on a tough shooting night for him is the latest example.

And then there’s Markkanen, who has averaged more 3-pointers per game than any rookie in league history and ranks second to Ben Simmons in rebounding and fourth in scoring at 15.5 points per game. Similarly to Dunn, Markkanen also has displayed the ability not to shrink from big moments.

Simply put, the reason the Bulls’ rebuild appears ahead of schedule is the young players have learned how to win more quickly than even management envisioned. Along with the Suns, the Bulls are the youngest team in the league. And such teams don’t typically fare well late in close games.

After their disastrous 3-20 start, the Bulls have. Nikola Mirotic has helped in this category. But so have Dunn and Markkanen.

In this day and age of social media and instant analysis, there’s a rush to declare winners and losers. In this case, there’s no point.

Both franchises gave up a lot to get exactly what they wanted.

and that was without seeing what Laurie brought to the table.

As it stands...this effectively puts us past the Nikko bs, LaVine is a starting caliber 2 and Dunn, if he can get his shit together, is a serviceable point.

We weren't going anywhere with Butler...I'm glad he went to a competitive team. Wish him the best but ttyl bih

getting a lot of the deal. Yes there were risks but WTF who was going to give three blue chips for one? So far those risks have paid off, maybe not in spades, but they have paid off. Minnie got a nice deal as well. They needed to consolidate talent and get better defensively. Check and check.

As I said there - Minny needed a superstar on the wing and actually played better ball without Lavine on the floor, meanwhile the Bulls got their new back-court and the #7 pick which has turned into a very impressive pick.

All parties got what they wanted - I do wonder if Chicago could have leveraged more and not given away that #16 asset.

I thought they should have taken Dennis Smith and a lot of people here did, but many acted like they wouldn't take the Finn with like the 25th pick or something. If nothing else he could shoot and there was potential for other areas of his game to develop.

Most of the folks I know thought his projection was pretty easy-- starter-quality stretch 4 eventually, a strong spot up shooter, and not much else-- that the "new Dirk" comments were all major cyses. That's still obviously worth a top 10 pick-- especially in a Hoiberg system-- but since the Bulls seemed far from contention, I can't blame folks who thought other players had higher upside for thinking the pick was a wasted opportunity. In particular with Dennis Smith, as I know a number of folks thought he could be a future All-Star.

I did *not* anticipate that his rebounding rate would be as high as it is right now. He was a pretty average rebounder last year, and his interior strength against college competition was definitely considered one of his weaker points going into the draft. While he was an obvious elite shooter last year, I also didn't expect him to put up multiple 30-burgers in his first three months-- he didn't do that against the Pac-12.

It may also (not to blow my Hoiberg horn some more) be a case that Markkanen is simply the perfect match for Hoiberg's style of play, that what he displayed at Arizona was a little more restrained by Arizona's slower tempo and iso heavy offense.

Not that the pick would've made a difference in the immediate results-- it just seemed like a lot when there were admittedly questions about Dunn and LaVine's floors (though they obviously both had high ceilings) and Butler was a proven All-NBA caliber player already. I was impressed by the balls on the Wolves to say "yeah, we'll give you these three prospects for an All-NBA guy... but we need a mid-first rounder too."

I'm mostly just glad that this team is helping Bulls fans finally come around on what I've vocally believed all along-- Hoiberg has the stuff to be a terrific NBA coach.

Pretty good pick to throw in but the swap up was 11 big spots.

the 16th pick is not breaking a deal for jimmy butler. whether the bulls would've made a good pick (and they've done better than most with mid to late first rounder) is irrelevant. They gave away an asset for nothing.

plus, like, you don't get to claim a win when you sell a guy in the rotation for the best basketball team ever for cash considerations in the same draft.

this is really easy to just say, with no corroboration, when you're not actually in the negotiating room.

minnesota knew they were giving up a lot in this deal. dumb ass fans and "pundits" didn't, but the team knew. maybe they do walk if they don't get another asset back. not for any of us to say, really. kind of baseless speculation tbh.

now here we definitely agree. they could obviously have used bell.

And Lavine's a starting quality 2. Glad to see Dunn at least looking better than he did as a rookie, too.
