like i'd love to see a documentary about Walton's Portland ring. and just about him in general.

this one, Bad Boys, Winning Time, When The Garden Was Eden, etc

the NBA needs to beg ESPN to crank out more of these celebrations of the game's history and lineage. especially for the 70s.

unfortunately the one i want the most is the one i will never get. MALICE AT THE PALACE.

I wouldn't say it's impossible. Other leagues have allowed arguably darker subjects to be covered.

they touched on why the celtics could barely sell tickets
for a team that won 6 chips in a row (racism)

when i was younger i always remember
hearing about how the nba was unpopular in the 70s and early 80s
and was on tape delay etc
but they really dug into why (racism)

Only thing I wasn't feeling as much was the narration. Neither Wahlberg nor Cube. I've always got a soft spot for traditional talking head sports docs. Having Wahlberg or Cube as the admittedly biased omniscient narrators didn't add anything. I'd rather the players/coaches/reporters tell the story themselves.

The drama of those games is tough to be though.

i always knew he was cold but man i enjoyed trolling Bird stans.

this doc has given me a newfound respect for him. even though i know he missed the game winning shot in 87 Game 4, i still expected that shit to go in while they were reliving it.

also the similarities between Bron and Magic are even closer than i imagined.

Bron comparisons to Jordan.

Bron is more of an all-around player like Magic. Wasn't great at one thing but was good-to great at many different aspects of the game.

Bron was never gonna be the pure scorer like Jordan, Kobe, KD, or Melo. And none of them could ever be the all around player that Bron and magic are.

Magic is my favorite player of all-time. Bron though is the one whom I'd consider to be in the top three players of all time. And I'm not a fan of his. I just respect his game a whole helluva lot.

Two "biased" narrators each reflecting their side of a heated rivalry.

But it really takes you out things at times. It wasn't like Cube or Whalberg were providing any deep insights. And ESPN sure loves celebrity narration for these 30 For 30s.

Just let the players and coaches and reporters speak for themselves.

Didn't ruin it for me but they both took me out of it sometimes. The constant uses of "us" and "we" as if they're on the team was so annoying. Just narrate for Christ's sake, stop inserting yourself.

But whoever was doing the post-sound on this sucks at his job. And whoever was writing and producing the Cube/Wahlburg narration also sucks at his job. You gotta keep in mind when narrators are recording that stuff they're really trusting the producers and engineers to do a good job pulling everything together. The execution here is the worst I've ever seen from a 30 for 30 who uauslly make great tv. They skated because the content is so good....but this is not good tv from a craft perspective.

in terms of tone and voice.

Wahlberg was annoying when he'd dip into his super Bawstin accent, and Cube didn't feel natural all the time, but it wasn't distracting

Larry was a fucn savage. Kareem was a fucn savage. Magic choked like a MFer in 84... did not know that. Ainge has one of the most punchable faces ever. Celtics are easily the ugliest team ever assembled...

no matter how many times i watch 80s games, I still laugh that no one even got flagrants when they was basically strangling each other

the Lakers, overall: Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Scott, Coop, Rambis, Wilkes, Macadoo, Ac Green, were incredible. Fuck the noise the doc was saying (about the '86 Boston team), I doubt the Warriors could beat the versions of Showtime from the 80s in a 7 game series.

So so so good....a rivalry befitting the amount of time and detail put into this doc. This is by far the best depiction of the it and gives the next gen a much clearer view of how bitter it is - my nephews watched it with my brother and now have some semblance of understanding.

Incredible. Bravo.

I NEEEEEEEEEEEVER knew they had low ticket sales and no fan support due to the team being so Black! That's all the way ridiculous!!!

Now I get why Bird was so important for them. Trying to bring back their legacy, but to do it with a White player....and yes, I respect Bird even more too, seeing that he hated being labeled as a "White" player. But fuck, better yet, mothafuck the fans of Boston.

And to believe I was actually rooting for them this postseason because of IT. Nah, yo.

BRUH!

Red gets props for bringing all the brothers in.

The Black Celtics need to have their own documentary. I'd like to hear or read about their experiences a bit more. Seems like there would be some very interesting stories to tell.

Boston, as a city,... I can't even say gather the words to express how I felt after watching that part of the series.

Bird, as much as I hated him due to being a Lakers fan, is the baddest white dude to ever touch the pill. His attitude, demeanor, style, game, etc. made me hate him but also develop the greatest respect for him.

mind blowing, because EVERY Celtic fan I know, Black or White, young or old, hides that part of the history...unless they just weren't aware of it.

Worthy needed admiral ackbar to give him warning bc Bird knew Worthy would overplay if he made a hard push toward the ball...the trap worked, DJ reads it perfectly, and then Bird's beeline to the corner with the simultaneous over shoulder catch and jump stop right into his shooting motion...beautiful in all regards, esp since he missed.
