Best RB in college football last season. If the run blocking is even halfway decent, he's a Pro Bowler by year 2.

but McCaffery is the better all-purpose back. I think Cook will get more carries, but he will be running behind a weak OL. McCaffery may still split some carries with Stewart (I think he's still got a little left in him) and get some opportunities as a receiver and on special teams.

McCaffery has a better long term situation with Cam and that balanced offense. I still think Cook is the better runner though so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

McCaffery ain't bad but at 8 you pretty much want an every down back..

I will say the Panthers are using McCaffery a lot.. and he is great at being a decoy.

it wasn't the worst ever, but his short-area times (20-yard shuttle, 3-cone) and explosive drills (broad jump, vertical) were really pedestrian for a guy that always looked electric in college.

I know, football isn't track, but you'd think he would test more like he plays.

>first player in NFL history to score a TD on his team's first
>4 possessions.

Cook is a harsh, strong, and fast kick in the nads to 'the RBs are interchangeable' folks out there.

Kalen Ballage ain't doing what Cook did yesterday. The Chargers wish they had this type of running back explosion when a play 'gets blocked properly'. Mike Davis tries hard and has shown well for the last month, but he knows he ain't got what Cook has.

Kubiak is up in the box calling plays like 'man! This is easy!'.

Teams can no longer afford the cap hit because other positions have become
more important. ..So even if the RB is a star RB, and is still
in his prime, they can’t afford to pay him his market value. And they can easily find
a younger RB at a cheaper price, who may not be as great, but will be serviceable.

CBs ( as well as pass rushers) are the second most important position on the field, but it wasn’t that way in the 80s, because teams were more run oriented, so having
a top flight RB was a high priority.

The role of LB and RB have really depreciated over the years due to the league
being more pass oriented , so emphasis and priority are placed on QBs and Receivers,
and Pass Rushers and CBs to stop them.

That is pure bullshit.

and I get they don’t last as long but gotdammit, they do way too

can easily find a serviceable RB at a lower salary.

Also, it’s not a technical position like QB and CB, where you have to really
spend a lot of money to get a top player. You can find a really good running
back in the later rounds of the draft easily than you can a QB or CB.

Arguably the greatest RB to ever play the game, came from a HBCU, and that
was back in the 70s.

Once a RB turns 26-27, he isn’t old. He is still in his prime, but he is going to
want more money once that rookie deal is up, but teams aren’t going to pay it

Shit look at David Montgomery. He was a stud for us and on is only 25,
but he wanted to be paid…Bears let him walk and he signed with Detroit!
Why? Because they have Khalil Herbert a similar back, and he is still
on his rookie deal. And he is 24, just one year younger ..lol

this lie about easily replacing RB’s is bullshit.

Every year a new crop of talent comes in on the cheap.

RB is the only position where people act like you can replace a top RB with some no name and get the same results.

regardless of technique.. the RB touches the ball a ton. They should be paid more.

look at a player like JuJu. Paid 8 mill last year and had 78 catches.

RB will have 200 touches and get paid 2 mill. Game hasn’t changed that much.

and the best RB is Barry fucking Sanders

And yes you easily can replace a RB in this day and age because the game is more
focused on the pass than the run, so by default a top RB isn’t needed because there
will not be a lot of runs plays called. So it will be a waste of money, when a team just
needs a RB for short yardage situations and GL stances. Focking teams are now
throwing on 3rd and short as opposed to running the ball

There is no way around that.

And now you got hybrid WR/RBs in Metcalf, Samuel and Patterson who are eating
away at running back carries, and that’s just going to continue to grow.

It’s like the league is reverting back to 40s and 50s when players played multiple
multiple positions

FBs have already been completely fazed out due to PA and RPOs, plus teams
can just put a TE in the backfield as an extra blocker on situational plays.

It’s just the nature of the game

McCaffrey was injured because he bulked up to prove he could run between the tackles

and its football. Players get injured all the time

QB can miss a whole season with a broken ankle or torn ACL and its whatever but let a RB get injured and its “because of the position”

and especially with the protection rules…where with RBs they break down quicker
because they get tackled 20-30 (20-30 carries) times a game!

RBs get tackled more than any other player ln the field

Are you really trying to make a comparison here? There is none.

It’s unfortunate, but it’s the nature of the game.

Running backs are the Tires of the league …

In response to Reply # 76

Trey lance is back and Murray will be too

They will continue to play at a prime level for a long time.

Where as a RB will continue to depreciate

What the hell are we even debating here?

RBs take on wayyyyyy more punishment than a QB

Lol

In response to Reply # 78

because they handle the rock and take more punishment.

the argument most make is "RB take wayyy more punishment so they shouldn't get paid big dollars due to risk of injury.

and how do you know Murray will be back? What has he done? Same with Lance.

Daniel Jones is getting 41 mill per year... for 15 fucking passing TD's. If he gets hurt next year, shrugs right? He'll be back and better than ever.

75. "bro, it kinda IS because of the position, doe...."
In response to Reply # 73

and I respectfully disagree about McCaffrey. He got injured because that position is HARD, man and some humans are more prone to get injured. Like Reggie Bush...he was a fucking specimen, but he got hurt ALOT. I remember hearing Marshall Faulk say once you play a down in the NFL as a running back...your body is never the same. Think about how many guys we see/have seen where we like...yo, he's NICE at RB. Then his body just gets ground up and they fall off. Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, McKinnon, David Johnson, etc. It's not even like they become trash or anything...it's just what that position does to the body. I once saw Eddie George and Javon Kearse, walking around downtown St. Louis when they were in town for a game. EG didn't even look like a human, lol...but Tennesee giving him 300 carries that season, legit broke his body. That's why I don't begrudge these dudes for getting they bread, but running backs...GET EVERY COTDAMN DIME POSSIBLE. PLEASE!!!

In response to Reply # 75

Background:

In recent years, several studies have correlated pitch count with an increased risk for injury among baseball pitchers. However, no studies have attempted to draw a similar conclusion based on number of carries by running backs (RBs) in football.

Purpose:

To determine whether there is a correlation between number of carries by RBs in the National Football League (NFL) and risk of injury or worsened performance in the subsequent season.

Study Design:

Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.

Methods:

The ESPN NFL statistics archives were searched from the 2004 through 2014 regular seasons. During each season, data were collected on RBs with 150 to 250 carries (group A) and 300+ carries (group B). The following data were collected for each player and compared between groups: number of carries and mean yards per carry during the regular season of interest and the subsequent season, number of games missed due to injury during the season of interest and the subsequent season, and the specific injuries resulting in missed playing time during the subsequent season. Matched-pair t tests were used to compare changes within each group from one season to the next in terms of number of carries, mean yards per carry, and games missed due to injury.

Results:

During the seasons studied, a total of 275 RBs were included (group A, 212; group B, 63). In group A, 140 RBs (66%) missed at least 1 game the subsequent season due to injury, compared with 31 RBs (49%) in group B (P = .016). In fact, players in group B missed significantly fewer games due to injury during the season of interest (P < .0001) as well as the subsequent season (P < .01). Mean yards per carry was not significantly different between groups in the preceding season (P = .073) or the subsequent season (P = .24).

Conclusion:

NFL RBs with a high number of carries are not placed at greater risk of injury or worsened performance during the subsequent season. These RBs may be generally less injury prone compared with other NFL RBs.

71. "Here is why they released him in great detail"
In response to Reply # 0

“Cook, who turns 28 in August, was set to take up $14.1 million in cap space for 2023 and was due to earn $11 million if he spent the season with the Vikings. Those are big numbers for an aging running back who surpassed 1,500 touches in his career last season.

The Vikings would owe Cook $2 million if they release him. By doing so after June 1, the Vikings would save $9 million in cap space while taking on $5.1 million in dead money on their 2023 cap.”

82. "RB’s talking about the disrespect"
In response to Reply # 0

I really don’t understand why elite RB’s can’t get elite contracts.. even if they are shorter contracts.

Why can’t Josh Jacobs get a 3 year $60 mill contract?

If a player is getting 300 touches, 2000 yards and also protects a QB on pass plays why cant he get a nice bag while a WR is getting $30 mill for 100 receptions?

Taylor and Najee speaking on it. Zeke got a bag tho, but when a team like the Giants gives the QB 42Mill and Barkley gets $10M?? Shit is upside down.

I know, I know.. the market, blah blah blah.. but I’m talking about the best at the position. People say that these dudes are easily replaceable but its not true. You can get another RB but will they be as special? Usually this isn’t the case. Same can be said for any position besides QB. You can find someone else who can run routes or play cornerback. Its done every year. Yet they act like replacing a RB is the easiest. Anyone is replaceable.

——

Earlier this week, Najee Harris of the Pittsburgh Steelers campaigned for teams to pay his fellow running backs after Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook were released by their former employers. Big-name ball-carriers such as Saquon Barkley, Tony Pollard and Josh Jacobs have had their rights retained via franchise tags that prevented them from reaching the open market, too.

As recently as Wednesday morning, the New York Giants reportedly were "content to let Barkley play out the season" on the $10.091M franchise tender for 2023.

In January, Taylor told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that he had undergone ankle surgery following this past campaign to address an injury he initially suffered in Week 4 of the season. While that setback presumably could make the Colts think twice about handing the 2021 rushing yards and rushing touchdowns leader an extension this summer, Taylor made it known that his camp has approached the club about the 2020 second-round draft pick remaining with the only NFL home he's known.
