With phone calls and meetings beginning informing some ESPN employees that they have been laid off, word will slowly trickle out all day long about who they are. There will be plenty of names you have heard of, as ESPN reorients their daily lineup of shows, and their online video and stories to match.

Get rid of Mendoza on SNB. Adds nothing. Bag the horrible SC6 show and send those two packing.

John Skippy Skipper needs to be let go. It was the higher ups that bid way too much on things like the NBA.

http://espnmediazone.com/us/john-skipper-message-espn-employees/

ESPN has been actively engaged throughout its history in navigating changes in technology and fan behavior in order to continue to deliver quality, breakthrough content. Today, we are again focused on a strategic vision that will propel our vast array of networks and services forward.

A necessary component of managing change involves constantly evaluating how we best utilize all of our resources, and that sometimes involves difficult decisions. Our content strategy – primarily illustrated in recent months by melding distinct, personality-driven SportsCenter TV editions and digital-only efforts with our biggest sub-brand – still needs to go further, faster…and as always, must be efficient and nimble. Dynamic change demands an increased focus on versatility and value, and as a result, we have been engaged in the challenging process of determining the talent—anchors, analysts, reporters, writers and those who handle play-by-play—necessary to meet those demands. We will implement changes in our talent lineup this week. A limited number of other positions will also be affected and a handful of new jobs will be posted to fill various needs.

These decisions impact talented people who have done great work for our company. I would like to thank all of them for their efforts and their many contributions to ESPN.

Our objective in all we do is to best serve fans and their changing consumption habits while still maintaining an unparalleled and diverse talent roster that resonates with fans across all our platforms. We will continue to foster creativity and investment in the products and resources necessary to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.

Thank you as always for your continuing dedication to our work.

Apparently ESPN is going all in on 'personalities' after spending their entire run saying the brand is bigger than any one name. The most transparent of which are the rebranded Sportscenter shows "The 6" and SVP's solo midnight edition.

Apparently ESPN has really stagnated in growth and it's damn sure got a bad reputation despite being the Worldwide Leader, but I've always found it interesting that ex-employees (even less bitter ones than Bill) talk about it like it's dying.

Here was a WaPo article from last fall about the whole thing: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2016/09/07/dont-tell-scott-van-pelt-that-espn-is-dying/?utm_term=.1e65e4109d0a

Initial rumors were that he was part of this sweep but it sounds like now they are just trying to get him into a more buyoutable deal for later. That sucks, I really like him as a broadcaster and as a person.

Pierre I mean he is already doing a lot of other stuff so he just keeps rolling and maybe has a little time for other stuff like books or another Canadian-based gig. Burnside and McDonald I feel for. Burnside will land on his feet for sure 13 fucking years, man. Stark was there like 17. It's crazy. It's a load of bullshit, too, because the company still makes money. Corporatization of news is getting scary. I think The NYT is still good. WaPo is iffy and it shouldn't be, Kaplan makes enough money for them that they can afford integrity.

In response to Reply # 0

Journalism has been a fight for clicks for years now-- as anyone who's watched or read ESPN in the past several years is already acutely aware-- but as more and more people cut the cable cord, more of ESPN's profits have started to disappear. The problem will get worse before it gets better.

I know I've read that ESPN is going all-in on digital and streaming, which is wise, but this means they're going to be even *more* click-driven than ever. So all of the things people hate about ESPN should amplify in quantity, because hate clicks are clicks, and thoughtful, well-researched journalism doesn't get clicks. Lord knows statistical analysis doesn't get clicks.

This also means that the names fortunate enough to not get fired will almost certainly have to do more work for less money to remain. And the majority of them will do so gladly, because paying journalism gigs are dying even faster than cable subscription numbers.

... but on top of everything you said (which I 100% agree with) there may be a slow cultural shift away from traditional sports as well.

The League of Legends final drew more viewers than the last game of the 2016 NBA finals (the Finals' best number in 18 years). Millenials already watch esports at a rate equivalent to baseball and hockey, and those numbers are only projected to rise at a staggering rate. The prize pools from esports are also rising, with the top DOTA player making almost as much as Dustin Johnson from the U.S. Open.

With super low barriers to entry to both participate and spectate esports, it's inevitable that esports will reach the same viewership levels as traditional sports. Cord cutting only exacerbates the issue because millenials (the new largest demographic, children of the baby boomers, the former largest demographic) have less inclination to pay to watch events they care little about.

ESPN and TBS have already televised top tier DOTA and CS:GO tournaments and it's just a matter of time until other games join the slate.

I think the earlier wave of Gen X was probably the last generation to be all about spectator sports - tuning into ESPN before the internet, buying season tickets, poring over stats. There's just so much more out there, not to mention the oversaturation of product (NFL on 3 nights a week, schedule announcement shows, a 3 day draft, a 9 month long NBA season, and baseball is well...baseball). As you mentioned with esports and other pursuits drawing eyes, "the game is on" just isn't as much of a priority for most people under 30. Most of the people I know who haven't cut the cord (self included), are over 30 and haven't done so to avoid losing live sports. Younger people could care less. Not to mention they see these athletes on IG or Twitter all the time, and ESPN isn't the only conduit into their lives. I'd like to see ESPN appeal more to the people who grew up with them and are still their demo - more 30 for 30-like content would be a start.

Streets won't let me chill.

they had that Madden series for several years, I'm actually kind of surprised they don't still do that or a spin-off covering FIFA.

The trouble with broadcasting sports simulations is that the best players in the world get there not through great strategy, usually, but cheesing the systems and weak points of those systems in their favor. Fans of the actual sport can just tell it's a video game and that ruins it. Broadcasting shooters I think is troublesome only because you can't get a feel for the field, just whoever they're spectating at that particular moment.

I think these sports-focused networks would be smart to start finding more ways to get fighting games into their programming though, because it's something that regular sports audiences can understand visually even if they don't understand the underlying mechanics of it and it translates easier to the macho attitude of most ESPN regulars (remember the shit ESPN caught for that first League of Legends broadcast?)

As evidenced by eleague with SFV and being shown on TBS.

I agree that ESPN has been on the front-foot with covering video games but as you said, the sports games don't really translate that well because most of the players are just exploiting things and it's obvious (I personally had a hard time watching the Madden show for that reason).

Their LoL coverage has been pretty good (and you alluded to the people bashing it at first, I think that comes with the territory when you're trying to expand into a new market) and imo those strategy MP games translate really well to TV.

Yup. League and DOTA get crazy viewership numbers because casters can explain things while the viewer can process what is going on because the action isn't absurdly frenetic (like, say, Overwatch). It's also because of this reason that Hearthstone also gets high viewership numbers on Twitch because there's time for the viewer to process and predict the correct play for themselves.

I try watching occasional Overwatch streams and even when they pull the camera out it's still not easy to digest everything that's going on. A single point of view is great for skill but not for field awareness but when you watch the field all nuance is lost. At this point I only watch OW streams if I want to pick up tips on specific characters. And it's why I never watch FPS streams otherwise.

I personally feel that ESPN or Fox or whoever will need to eventually commit to esports as regular programming. If they can't transition from being wed to cable networks then they need to figure out how to pull in the rapidly maturing millenial demographic. Treat League/Street Fighter/Counter Strike/Hearthstone (I'm biased) with legitimate analysis and coverage (not just broadcast the tournaments) like they do with traditional sports. Cover the players, their journeys, make stars out of some and villains of others. It seems silly now, but if you want people to watch TV again then put stuff on TV that the largest demographic would watch.

and I adore watching a good SFV stream on twitch. Outside of the mechanics and aspects of the gameplay (which I barely understand fully), the game on a graphical level is gorgeous. The only thing that bothers me is that some of the women characters are a bit overboard in their figures, but I guess Capcom is going for a younger male demographic, so I can't knock it. Some of Laura's costumes are a bit strong in that regard.

but I just told Charter to stick their cable package up their ass, yesterday. I said let me hold on to that high speed internet, though...lol. I got the highest SlingTV package (40), Hulu (8) and already had Netflix and 2 Fire Sticks. Dropped down from $116 to $48 a month. There really was no damn reason for me to hold on that long. And I STILL watched Mike and Mike this morning, lol.

That's nothing new and has been true since the advent of the internet.

The difference though is that (live) sports are uniquely tied to the health of cable subscriptions, and millenials are uniquely tied to the rise of cord cutting. And millenials have long been at the age now where they're having kids (who are increasingly growing up in homes without a cable subscription).

That comparison I quoted above regarding esports viewership vs baseball/hockey was actually referring to *male* millenials... ie, young males still have a thirst for competition but now they're putting that attention towards esports (with expensive cable subscriptions helping to direct them there):

"Newzoo estimates that 22% of American male millennials watch esports, putting it virtually equal with baseball and hockey in terms of viewership among that demographic."

https://www.si.com/tech-media/2017/02/09/esports-industry-expectations-billion-dollar (great read into other sports business investing in esports)

The thing is, someone who watches reality shows and movies and gives two shits about sports was never going to be an ESPN/sports/esports fan in the first place. Esports specifically is thriving in part due to the large "paywalls" involved in following traditional sports:

"A new report released by Newzoo for the month of October highlights a substantial overlap in traditional sports viewers and esports audiences. What's more, 76 percent of esports enthusiasts state the time they spend watching esports is taking away from the time they used to spend watching traditional sports."

97. "Since when is "hockey on ESPN" a part of any metric?"
In response to Reply # 85

This is literally a quote from that article:

"What's more, 76 percent of esports enthusiasts state the time they spend watching esports is taking away from the time they used to spend watching traditional sports"

Hockey or not, esports is directly pulling from traditional sports.

Not sure what you're getting at here.

used baseball and hockey as comparison metrics (since they are traditional sports) for viewership numbers, NOT that viewers were watching hockey on ESPN.

Nothing about those viewership numbers have anything whatsoever to do with "hockey on ESPN". The comparison is that esports viewership numbers are already on par with sports like baseball and hockey (which happen to be traditional sports).

Like... you understand that, right?

the networks will be able to pay less for the rights to air games from the major sports leagues, right? I have to imagine paying those rights are a majoring sticking point for ESPN, and with cord cutting driving down the profits, other networks are losing money just like ESPN is.

I'm probably off in my assessment there, but I have to think the other cable networks are hurting along with ESPN with cord cutting digging into the traditional revenue stream.

They've got the NFL til 2021-- paid over 15 billion for that. They've got the NBA til 2023-- paid their share of 24 billion with Turner for that. College football playoffs til 2024-- over 7 billion there. Billion-plus deal for sporting events through ACC, Pac-12, and SEC conferences-- billion-plus for *each.*

The sports conglomerates saw the writing on the wall and forced ESPN's hand. We won't see what companies are willing to pay for these rights til early next decade... and by then, the cable subscription rules will have been totally rewritten, so it's hard to theorize.

to build him some robotic on-air talent to replace actual humans by the time those deals fully expire.

Several billion dollar deals. Billion. With a B. Seems like trying to get blood from a stone with the way folks (like myself) are cutting the cord en masse. Have to think several of the folks on staff there will see the writing on the wall in terms of getting let go eventually, especially Bomani Jones since dude literally has a degree in Economics if memory serves me right.

The funny and somewhat sad thing is that I don't think a good grip of these folks will get great life preservers from Fox Sports because I can't imagine that the grass is too green for that network.

... most of these deals were done 3+ years ago. Most companies were still thinking pretty differently then.

I imagine the sports held ESPN's hand to the fire by saying, "Look, we *know* Fox and/or Turner will pay for exclusive rights just so you don't get them. So sign us to a long and expensive deal or else." And ESPN, still not fully seeing the writing on the wall and believing that they were untouchable thanks to backing from The Mouse, was happy to oblige.

crazy how many of these people have ZERO to do with the NFL but the fact that ESPN paid for rights based on steady growth for what has instead been a marked decline in the NFL's popularity fucked them. I am not sure I buy it entirely, depending on how they replace these people I don't see how they could save more than a couple mil here while really shaking up the brand and some pretty recognizable faces.

I feel bad because I know some of these people. Some will be fine, Ed Werder will end up covering the NFL before the season begins. Pierre LeBrun still has his TSN/RDS gig and will undoubtedly be pursued, few if any people have the connections he has. Some others I know will land on their feet. But it's not a glamorous or high-paying industry. Those guys, Scott Burnside and a few others had very good contracts and will land on their feet. Still others were making it on the salary of a lousy school district's teachers or less and will now have to knock on a lot of doors to continue doing what they love.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

LeBrun, Burnside or McDonald, it was more the editorial side of things that was lacking and probably will continue to lack. I wonder if now secondary guys like Chuck Gormley will get more work. I imagine Custance and Strang will definitely get more carries now. They cut back a lot of the localized coverage (ESPNBoston, Chicago, etc) a couple years ago and didn't really replace people. How thin are they going to spread themselves?

1 - they have lost viewership and subscribers as the model has become less traditional with many other options

2 - they paid an inflated rate for their NFL and region specific rights (SEC network, Longhorn network, etc). They essentially paid at the peak of the market thinking it could only go higher...completely wrong.

As a result, suffering some serious revenue hits and therefore having to cut costs.

Most of the on-air talent they let go hadn't really developed a thing they were known for. A lot of the people they've kept really hustled to bring new, unique content. Even a dude like Tom Haberstroh, who is a fairly anonymous personality, busts his ass to produce big number segments.

If you're at espn now, you better be really entrepreneurial. You need to develop a unique voice and produce content that people like for the tv or the web site. If you try to just be a traditional _______ (anchor, reporter, talk show host, etc) you better be the absolute best at your field, or else espn is going to see you (probably correctly) as replaceable.

It's not humane, but like somebody said above, corporations gotta corporate,

ESPN is laying off these people due in part to signing those mega deals with sports leagues as millennials cut the cord. If ESPN gets rid of Bomani, Lebatard, Stugotz, Wilbon, or Kornheiser then I will never return to their brand again.

If networks move away from mega deals in the billions with sports leagues then things change dramatically. The NFL's model is built around pressuring cities to build stadiums as owners reap in >70%+ of the profits. Add in broadcast rights and owners profit rises.

What happens to pro sports without the billion dollar tv deals?

one of the big problems with journalism and particularly sports journalism is the permanence of the moment. the idea that what is shall continue to be. a lot of things are missed because of this and having so many people in the media doesn't seem change it.

same thing here. right now things were moving quickly in one direction for some time and now they have halted or swung back the other way. the money is still huge and it gets reduced a little it will still be huge.

if anything i think the franchise value could burst. in many cases these things are more assets for the super rich to leverage than actual huge money-makers. but there are few of them, they are leverageable and the rich will keep the values where they are as long as they can.

i think this decision was a corporate thing, period. profits aren't meeting projections, trim some fat. it's also a clear indicator that ESPN is not about news, it's about entertainment. they like to make that statement wherever possible, it seems.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

but I cut the chord and while I still tune into ESPN for games using someone's password I damn sure don't watch SC or any other shows like I used to.

I can use the app to check scores and highlights.

ESPN fucked up paying a premium for the NFL and SEC. I think when you do something like that you have to put chord cutters into the equation.

If I don't have ESPN could I at least watch a few games and sit through a few more commercials or an ad at the top of the screen?

Maybe it isn't possible but I think you have to ad some type of premium tier for app ads and let folks watch for free or risk losing viewers

anyone losing their job is good...just curious. Like...they let Robin Lundberg go, but kept Golic Jr. They let go of Trent Dilfer, but kept Ryan Clark. Let go of Jayson freaking Stark but kept Freddie Coleman. These are just examples, not pointing anything out in particular as being egregious.

I'm guessing Dilfer's salary was quite a bit more than Clark's, for example, based on their tenure alone.

I've read in some comments sections that the "real america" just wants sports and not awards to Caitlyn Jenner or comments on gun control when it's related to sports. This piece while it makes good business points goes off the rails at the end:

https://theringer.com/espn-layoffs-d7fad2feb8d5

The relevant bit to this conversation:

2. Libtard ESPN got what it deserved! So goes the take bubbling into the feeds of media critics, and being shot from the elephant gun wielded by Jason Whitlock.

We’ve been here before, too. When the NFL ratings sank last season, it was all Colin Kaepernick’s fault. One of the curses of living in interesting times (Donald Trump Edition) is that every media organization bears the mark of a secret political agenda, according to that one guy on the message board who has figured it all out.

Are ESPN’s layoffs the direct result of Bomani Jones having a particularly righteous night on the radio, or the network showing Michael Sam kissing his partner? No, no, no. Pierre LeBrun does not (as far as I know) wear a pussy hat. If the take comes from someone who works for a competing cable sports network, be twice as skeptical.

“Is ESPN a liberal network?” is a legitimate and interesting question that deserves examination. But if you see someone saying ESPN got comeuppance for its “agenda,” they have, in nearly every case, just revealed their own.

Any idea when the pod will be back? Always entertaining, really enjoy each episode

The podcast was the biggest timesink for me. I caught on late to them, maybe towards the end of last year, but I would listen consistently here when I could have been listening to political or current events or technology podcasts.

Had a really wide range of guests who were all knowledgeable and fun to listen to. Will mos def miss this podcast.

they missed buccigross, custance, shelbourne and some others but their days are numbered. they want people who can do multiple sports and who can do any platform. if you are just a writer and can't do shitty tv stuff, you are gone. fox sports already did this. csn did something similar enough to be compared. basically the people who generate the information are worthless unless they can talk like an expert on things they are not and do it on camera. the mush heads like skip bayless and jemele hill are taking over the world.

And her sports knowledge is solid enough that she sounds competent enough speaking on various sports-related topics.

I've always liked her perspectives and outlooks on sports culture, but I do have to admit, I've never heard her break down sports strategy in a way that was unique or showed a great strategic knowledge.

But like you and some other folks were mentioning, the network is moving away from specialists and towards trying to create a collection of shows which feature conversations you would hear at a bar.

I like her on TV, but to be honest I miss her writing. To me, she was a really good writer.

I think what folks r saying is that EVERYBODY is getting it in this ESPN bloodbath....Online writers, SC talking heads, bloggers.....

The big connection to all this is cable/satellite TV is dying....People r cutting that cord...That would have happened with or without SC being LIT as hell....This has an impact on everything (TV and online)....

The NFL have looked at such dwindling numbers in terms of people checking out of paying high ass cable bills they are basically telling ESPN they are no longer valuable to them which KILLS their bottom line....

are you saying it doesn't?

of course not, most everybody would agree the on-air programs aren't a draw anymore

and of course that is part of the downsize

cord cutting being a large factor of course

I'm still not seeing the debate here

?

I'd assume the biggest draws to the website are streams and boxscores

ESPN's parent company is disney? and they have contracts with all the major sports

it's not like they are doing any investigative journalism

and watching talking heads scream on each other been tired

the fok do you need writers and on-air personalities for to post scores and live stream games

?

nobody wants to watch the shows, nobody wants to read the articles, they just want the highlights and the boxscores. that's what he's saying, I think the tone he's using is getting in the way of that. he's not ignoring that a lot of the firings were website writers, he's arguing they're just as irrelevant to the common ESPN user who just wants to see highlights and know who scored 2 touchdowns that day.

given how they shuttered Grantland and have never found a way to make it easy to just find the writing from the writers you enjoy (assuming you're a weirdo that likes articles like me) I wouldn't be surprised if most of their traffic was highlights and boxscores.

their website, at least on the phone, is almost entirely highlight clips now, it's really hard for me to find an article to read. it's a little better online, but you definitely see it there as well. every post is primarily a video until you've scrolled past eight or nine posts. it looks a lot like Facebook all of a sudden.

smh. best thing they had going over there.

http://mashable.com/2017/04/29/espn-killed-truehoop-podcast/#o7kfXpfcXSqA

ESPN killed something else with its layoffs, its best hope to reach millennials: TrueHoop podcasts

"Stop hitting yourself... Stop hitting yourself..."

That's the sound of ESPN bullying itself into irrelevance as we've now learned that the self-described "worldwide leader in sports" has killed the best thing to come out of its Bristol, Connecticut headquarters in recent years: the TrueHoop network of podcasts.

The news that the podcasts will shut down comes along with the massive layoffs announced earlier this week.

Along with the initial cuts of about 100 staffers, ESPN also quietly let go of one of its most impactful team members, Henry Abbott, the guy behind ESPN's TrueHoop brand of basketball stories, videos, and podcasts. His ouster, ostensibly, spelled the end of the podcasts.

And as sad as many are that Abbott is gone, there's a lot more angst about the death of TrueHoop's network of podcast shows, easily ESPN's "coolest" collection of characters and content that was digitally native, millennial-focused, and ESPN's best example of its ability to connect pop culture and sports.

As a listener, I was there at the beginning of TrueHoop's rise, having just returned from several years of living abroad and looking for some under the radar real talk to reconnect me to the American pulse. I watched as the guys — a rotating line-up of ESPN NBA reporters Ethan Sherwood Strauss, Tom Haberstroh, Amin Elhassan — diverged from Abbott's official TrueHoop video entries and Skype sessions on the ESPN site and went underground, first on Spreecast, then on Blab (both live streaming sites, now defunct), and occasionally on Periscope, to add video to the audio sessions, which were long, unstructured, and incredibly personal.

It was great. Like eavesdropping on a group of your friends after a game of pickup basketball at the park. Along with dissecting basketball statistics and resurfacing little known NBA insider lore, they talked about the finer points of East Coast rap vs. the rest of the country, the deep state politics of sneaker-head trends, how to properly troll your enemies on Twitter, the art of tracking Instagram memes, and even talked about who got offed on the latest episode of your favorite prestige cable TV series.

With seemingly little interference from the top brass at ESPN, over the course of several years, the TrueHoop podcasts went from unnoticed experiment to becoming ESPN's most social media-centric voice, drawing in more front-facing ESPN personalities like Brian Windhorst, Kevin Arnovitz, and Rachel Nichols, the television host of ESPN's popular NBA show The Jump.

Later, the shows moved away from video and focused on the audio podcasts. They expanded to several shows per week, each with its own theme: Black Opinions Matter Monday, the Asian culture-focused Fresh off the Bench, Warriors Wednesday, and the Friday Mailbag, a podcast that pulled listeners from social media and made them a part of the show.

As the TrueHoop podcast brand grew, more of ESPN's more vibrant voices joined the mix, along with something very different: podcast co-hosts who had no official relationship with ESPN (shouts to Big Wos, an early member of the TrueHoop family). A mix of fans of TrueHoop turned co-hosts, friends of NBA players, and even journalists from competing sports brands, TrueHoop had done something very rare: TrueHoop did something very rare: it replicated in a podcast the openness and inclusivity that existed almost exclusively on social media.

Along those lines, it was also one of the most diverse parts of ESPN, giving greater voice to women who are sports nerds (shouts to Kaileigh Brandt) as well as various people of color (Asian, black, Hispanic, and international). TrueHoop also served as the primary platform for one ESPN's rising stars in Elhassan.

Of course, TrueHoop was working far too well, so ESPN decided, for reasons that haven’t been publicly shared, to end it all. I can only guess, because they talked about it on the podcast so often, after years of building equity with fans, the podcasts had only managed to garner a few advertising deals. Whether that was a result of TrueHoop's unique, unofficial-by-design structure, or ESPN somehow dropping the advertising ball in general I couldn't say, but the popularity of the podcasts didn't seem to be accompanied by an advertiser presence.

Which is why it was such a surprise a few weeks ago when ESPN gave the green light to the TrueHoop-related "Sidecast," a video broadcast on the ESPN app that played alongside a live NBA game. It was one of the most innovative things I've ever seen ESPN do — using its official digital tools to bring its passionate social media and podcast family to a wider audience by tying it to a major NBA event.

Apparently, that one-off experiment wasn't enough to save TrueHoop.

On Thursday, the same day the layoffs had been announced, Jade Hoye, the lead producer of the TrueHoop podcasts, used Twitter to let everyone know that TrueHoop was done.

Somehow, if feels like we've been here before — with the death of Grantland. Back in 2015, just months after firing its founder, Bill Simmons (now of The Ringer), ESPN announced that it was shuttering Grantland. Although Grantland never seemed to reach its traffic or advertising potential, it was undeniably the best pop culture gateway-drug to sports ESPN had ever produced. Given that history, it seemed almost inevitable that TrueHoop would end under similarly murky circumstances.

But the difference with TrueHoop was, despite its outlaw-ish aesthetic within ESPN, it was primarily created and staffed by employees who were deeply tied to the larger ESPN brand, and no major Simmons-esque character emerged from TrueHoop's fold to give ESPN president John Skipper any backtalk about what the network should or shouldn't be doing for TrueHoop. At least on the surface, TrueHoop appeared to be a labor of love, separate from the staff's normal duties at ESPN.

In the wave of layoffs of veteran reporters and on-air personalities, ESPN also laid off Strauss, one of the pillars of TrueHoop.

His loud "Radio Ethan" alter-ego, a fictional blowhard terrestrial radio sports host who offers nothing but the most bombastic and controversial hot takes in search of ratings, was a popular staple of TrueHoop. It was a great inside joke about sports radio, but one that was apparently lost on ESPN, which has held onto some of the kinds of voices Strauss regularly mocked.

So far, Simmons' second act with The Ringer is still struggling to match the pop-culture-meets-sports resonance it had with Grantland.

As for TrueHoop, a quick search for the name on social media and on sites like Reddit will tell you that this is a brand with many loyal fans.

They're sad to see it go.

It's a business. The traffic and advertising potential is the only reason it exists. I also don't know how many people only interested in pop culture went to Grantland and were like, "Oh shit, SPORTS!"

I'd also like to see something more than conjecture that these podcasts were reaching millenials. It wasn't the most successful ESPN podcast by any stretch of the imagination and it apparently got a quarter of the downloads that Zach Lowe's podcast did.

This is like when someone's favorite low-rated TV show gets canceled. It sucks but, putting emotions aside, the business end of things probably made the axing the most logical thing to do.

Let's look back at ESPN's Page 2. I'm sure that made no money for anything ever, but it was then device by which the company discovered Simmons, who made them a lot of a money. You keep creatively vibrant places open because you don't know what they'll produce, but you can expect something that's profitable down the line.

Like Jon Snow being resurrected by Game of Thrones' Red Priestess, the basketball gods have decided to give one of the most beloved sports podcasts a second chance.

ESPN's TrueHoop podcasts are back. But there's a catch: the pop-culture-meets-sports-talk series of podcasts have a brand-new name, and a slightly different, but mostly familiar lineup.

The social media-fueled outrage, bewilderment and, yes, outright sadness that rained down upon ESPN via Twitter last week following news of TrueHoop's demise has somehow managed to pierce the cold corporate heart of the Bristol, Connecticut-based sports network. Beginning Friday, according to a source familiar with the network's plans, most of the people behind the popular TrueHoop series of podcasts will return under a new name: The Basketball Analogy.

Produced by Jade Hoye, the man behind TrueHoop's sound and much of its rise to prominence, the new podcasts will return familiar voices to listeners like ESPN NBA experts Amin Elhassan, Tom Haberstroh, Kevin Pelton, Brian Windhorst, Kevin Arnovitz, and Tim MacMahon, as well as show regulars like Big Wos and Zach Harper.

The turnaround comes after a torrent of angst from fans of the podcast, many of whom reached out directly to ESPN via social media last week.

I was actually starting to watch ESPN because of things that were said on TrueHoop podcasts but oh well @espn https://t.co/Eabn3HAtp6

@ESPN_FanCentral in 2015 Grantland was the best show for young people espn had, they killed it off. Now the same for truehoop pod. Yall suck

Can't get over this devastating True Hoop podcast news. No more @FreshOffBench?? No more #BOMM?? Genuinely appreciate your work @TrueHoopTV

— Rebecca Tran (@beckietran) April 28, 2017

Please help me during my time or mourning @BigWos @talkhoops @tomhaberstroh.

TrueHoop can’t die. When’s the spinoff? I’ll pay money.

— Laidlaw (@BuddyRuski) May 2, 2017

The podcast's name change comes in part as a result of the departure of Henry Abbott, the founder of the TrueHoop blog. Abbott, who was a victim of the network's recent layoffs, was central to TrueHoop's written component, and while he regularly appeared in TrueHoop audio and video, in recent years, the TrueHoop podcast family of hosts and regular guests had expanded far beyond the founder's direct influence. ESPN still effectively owns the TrueHoop name, but the change allows the network to rebrand the popular series of shows without any direct ties to the brand's founder.

With the arrival of well-known Yahoo basketball columnist Adrian Wojnarowski and his The Vertical site and podcast to ESPN so soon after the layoffs, some have openly wondered if there might be a connection between his arrival and the shift in TrueHoop's status. That remains unclear, but given the competitive nature of the basketball beat at ESPN, the coming months will likely see an aggressive approach to delivering NBA content in a variety of ways.

Under TrueHoop's new The Basketball Analogy name, a rotating cast of basketball insiders, journalists, and occasional celebrities will continue the tradition of TrueHoop's weekly themed podcasts, along with the same music cues, "bossanova as censor beep" breaks, and Hoye's well placed desk bell "ding" audio punctuations.

Unfortunately, one of TrueHoop's fan favorites, former Golden State Warriors beat reporter Ethan Sherwood Strauss, is still effectively out of the official ranks of ESPN's basketball cabal following last week's layoffs. But since the podcast is known for welcoming even competing journalists into its fold as guests, listeners may yet get to hear the comedic rants of his "Radio Ethan" character in the future. Fittingly, Strauss' last story for ESPN, published on Tuesday, tells the story of the top team in the NBA, whose only weakness may be its inability to properly harness the talent within its ranks.

But with ESPN's unusually nimble turnaround regarding the podcast, there may yet be hope that the media giant can get past the negative taint of the recent layoffs, and begin leveraging its more internet savvy in-house talent.

And a big name too boot in John Clayton.

I didn't see it mentioned here, but I saw a headline on si.com that the Mike & Mike show is getting the axe. I wasn't a big fan of that show, but that's pretty big news if true, since that show has been on for quite a long time now.

Morale over at ESPN must be pretty low though if the firings are still on going.

ESPN was apparently planning to give Greenberg his own show, and at least originally planned to keep Golic on the air with a new partner (either his son or Trey Wingo). With all the lay-offs, who knows if any of that is still going to happen.

I haven't watched/listened to M&M in maybe a decade so I'm not too caught up in it but I know it's not unprecedented for beloved radio duos to be at each other's necks behind the scenes after a certain amount of time together. If they're not, you wonder why someone would go through the trouble of trying to make news about it other than boredom. I'd wager the truth is in the middle.

for not clicking on the actual si.com article and going on the headline alone. Thanks for the info. Were they the first sports talk radio show to broadcast on the radio and television?

In response to Reply # 0

I am not calling for Mel Kiper's firing in favor of Mike Mayock. ESPN needs to restructure and realign their NFL draft team starting with hiring Mike Mayock away from the NFL Network and encouraging Mel Kiper to resign.

supervises espn's total web and television coverage of the nfl and nba draft. i'd be legitimately interested to see if and how he could improve thr format.

Bonus is that it would keep him to busy to really fuck up ESPN's nba coverage any more than he already has.

In response to Reply # 149

I don't even have a good explanation for it.

nfl network has kicked the shit out of them on the draft ever since it existed.

I only watch the nba draft on ESPN because what else are you going to do

I will miss his contributions but the nature of the industry is such that you can still make them even as a full-time faculty member. Adande is great at what he does, he and Elliotte Friedman might be the two guys I most respect all-around. In terms of just writing probably John Branch, at his best he is really fucking good and he can bring it in different contexts.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

most notably Stewart Mandel, long-time national CFB writer for Sports Illustrated before moving to Fox.

the company message is a "pivot to video", then other writers found the Fox Sports Twitter account asking people to use their video content (interviews, etc) for free. so they don't want to produce anything. plan moving forward is to just lock Skip Bayless in a mirrored room for 8 hours.
