"Was Tim Hardaway's crossover really that good?"

I know he dissed Iverson's crossover recently but unless people want to say that no one was really working a crossover back then therefore players weren't really able to defend it then fine but I really don't see the hoopla around his crossover and never have. From his youtube clips I just see bad defense on a majority of them. Not all but many,

Now if you want to say he deserves credit for being the foundation that inspired today's great crossovers I can accept that.

That UTep 2 Step was devastating down hill...the speed at which he went through the legs...which typically meant a change of direction...but then back across the body, stunned most defenders. And he could do it with either hand.

It's the perfect 'simple but effective' cross but still looked pretty in game speed. And I DARE you to run full speed and try to pull off that move effectively. Without a tight handle and excellent footwork, it just won't work.

after he hit you with it. He was either at the rim making a layup or pulling up and putting a J on you.

And it was only one of the ways he would break your ankles.

I mean, his crossover eveN served him well when he was a busted down and older version of himself in a Heat uniform.

Not saying he's the best of all time, but to call his crossover overrated is a bit much, at least in my opinion.

2 major reasons:

1 - He made sure to attack and sell the straight line hard drive or pull-up jumper off a hard dribble to start the game. Once the defender was leaning to that side and guessing, he would pull the cross-over out.

2 - He was extremely consistent with his initial move...whether he was going to do a straight drive or pull-up jumper or a cross-over...it was always the same initial burst. It's akin to a great fastball/change-up pitcher, the release and delivery is always the same...that's how it was with Tim and his initial move.

This is why you see guys jumping...it's not "bad defense", they are leaning and anticipating, then he reads it, crosses, and they look foolish to the naked eye.

Tim was probably the quickest with it too. Especially when he did it in transition.

AI move was a carry and has been illegal for like 15 years now.

He kind of hid it from view. Used it as a change of pace move. He was good at being able to read your movements and break you down with it. I do remember him doing it in transition which is kind of crazy if you think about it. I don't remember him losing the ball with it though either.

TH was the first to really trademark that move tho...

Sure seemed like half the highlights for crossovers were against John Stockton.

tim's was not as cool as theirs or god shammgod's but it was very economical and effective. his ability to change directions and create space with minimal bounces and steps was sick. he could cross it over and change directions with his body in a split second and when he put it between his legs it was kind of a four-direction deal. you didn't know if he was going right or left, driving forward or stepping back. very nice moves.

I specifically remember his Heat days because I'm a Knicks fan, and when he was on the roster, he primarily used his crossover to create distance for clean three pointers. At that point, he was too old and broken down to truly penetrate with consistency.

broke dudes down and made them look stupid. post knee injury his crossover was more mechanical but still effective. when he was in his physical prime he was a joystick type guy. he would be tight with his dribble and then just bust off in whatever direction the defender let him.

would get a whistle blown on us every single time and a coach's reprimand.

Pretty much all the "sick ball handling" we see from recent generations (and would emulate as 90s youths) would be blown dead in it's tracks by adults who came up in the times of either Cousy or Pistol Pete, etc.

In that environment, Iverson (one of my absolute favorite players ever) wouldn't have been able to function , while Hardaway would be thriving in any era in any town, including Iverson's time . And even if it wasn't as flashy, it was "killer" effective. Razor sharp with the little things.

I still like ai better tho lol
