"The College Basketball Coaching Carousel Master Post"

Some relatively interesting jobs out there.

Indiana
Illinois
Washington
NC State
Cal

Cuonzo took Mizzou and is taking Michael Porter Jr. with him.

NC State wants Archie Miller, but the word is he's not really interested and Sean is advising him not to take it. (Rumor is Sean believes he'll be in line to get the UNC job when Roy retires. If that's true... gulp.)

For Washington and Cal, they should both look at Eric Musselman and Randy Bennett.

For State, if it's true that Archie ain't down... look, Kevin Keatts's season just ended. Don't overthink it. The man can coach.

Illinois prepping to give Tony Bennett a top 5 coach salary, at minimum. We'll see if UVA matches it-- and if they did, I wouldn't be surprised if Illinois offers top 3 money, topping Self and Miller's deals. I'd be very interested to see what UVA does in that scenario.

Not sure if Archie would want to coach in the same conference as his brother, so that might be a stretch too... but not impossible.

...but since the school has zero history spending THAT kind of money on a sport that isn't even their top revenue earner, I'm hesitant. Just because they have the money to match and they like Bennett doesn't mean they *will* match.

Yurtseven and Kapita will both likely be back. Markell Johnson will be back. Abu back. Maverick Rowan has been a bust, but maybe a new coach will help him live up to the hype coming out of HS. It's not a team totally without talent.

They won't be good, sure. But maybe if Markell Johnson can do decent work, feed the bigs, they can have a decent enough offense to win some games.

In response to Reply # 0

Very surprising because he was the coach in waiting to take over for Boeheim.

I'm thinking maybe Boeheim isn't retiring after next year and Hopkins was done waiting.
He did make some vague comments on retiring a few weeks ago IIRC.

In any case, good hire for Washington.

They know he'll leave the second Boeheim retires. Maybe they just want some stability, and I'd imagine Hopkins would be relatively affordable.

Still, maybe it means Jimmy's planning on coaching another 4-5 years. In which case, sure, makes some decent sense for Washington.

In response to Reply # 24

The Athletic Department at SU has completely changed since Hopkins was made Coach in waiting years ago.

Hopkins had a contract and it would've been honored, but he was not the new AD's guy and I think 1) he knew and felt that, 2) He got tired of waiting, 3) He can carve out his own head coaching career without the pressure and unfair expectations of following a legend, 4) Washington gave him 6 years.

Just what I've pieced together from following the situation.

The previous AD had a "succession plan" that had Boeheim retiring after next year. I think Boeheim knows that was done to placate the NCAA and is not legally binding and he's going out on his own terms and not the NCAA's.

after georgetown fucks up this debacle and infuriates big John and JT3 while simultaneously assuring georgetown of a shitty, half-ass replacement because they wait too long to start their search for a new coach, big John decides to troll georgetown and sends his son up north.

and then jt3 actually performs well. but cuse fans would be rooting for a Thompson and georgetown fans would be leaving verizon emptier still for a white retread who continues to lose local recruits because big john destroyed any hope for georgetown's future.

fuck i'm salty. the administration is playing the situation so fucking badly.

And if he doesn't, what's the difference? They haven't been any good in half a decade, and just went 9-22. It's not like he's going to fail to build on something that's established, because there is nothing there.

I'm rooting like hell for him and legit bummed out that he's gone.

I don't know if people realize how important he was to the Cuse program the last 15 years or so. He(along with current OKC front office guy Troy Weaver) revitalized the recruiting once they put him out on the road in 2001 and brought in the bulk of the players that won the national title. And he had a huge role in the day to day operations of the program. I think he shouldered a lot more weight than most number 2's.

Keeping Conroy was clutch w/ may keep the Garfield guys.

Now there's rumor, probably very unlikely, that Hopkins will keep Porter Sr. as an assistant, thus keeping Porter Jr. and his brother, Johntay.

either way, i'm much more optimistic about dude than 5 minutes after it was announced.

because apparently Hopkins met w/ the Porters last night, and when asked today he said Porter Sr. on his staff was a possibility, AND although Porter Jr. has asked out of his LOI according to news reports, that hasn't been granted as yet.

you'd think if Porter Sr. really was on Mizzou's staff, they'd have granted Porter Jr.'s request since they already granted Blake Harris' and have said they will let anyone out who requests it.

Sounds like Porter Sr. MIGHT stick around which is why they are waiting on that before they go ahead and grant Porter Jr's request.

Although I guess that's ambiguous about which part... but it'd be weird for him to deny it for semantics if he was still considering staying.

They also *did* officially release Porter:

https://twitter.com/ChristianCaple/status/844967171327377408

The reports that he's been offered the Missouri job are everywhere. Multiple reporters have reported that Porter will take the job, and others have been reporting on Porter's intentions to join Mizzou since-- or maybe even immediately before-- Romar's departure. What's true and what isn't remains to be seen... but it definitely looks like to most people that the Porters are headed home.

Various links to the smoke, hastily googled, that implies a fire.

whole thing just seems weird. i mean, it makes sense IF they are going to Mizzou to just go, let the kid out of his letter, etc.

so the whole stuff about him maybe staying makes it more headscratching.

there's probably a MAX 2% chance they stay, if that.

edit: just to be clear, Porter Sr's denial in that tweet was denial (as of 530PM yesterday) that Hopkins had talked w/ him. that was true. Hopkins didn't talk to SR (and JR) until later last night.

he did it like a coward. left in the middle of the night and didn't even address the team face to face. that's not the way to do it, be a man.

we're such a young team now with several seniors leaving. if he takes his recruits with him then our cupboard will be pretty bare. really curious to see the impact this has on the team next year. i predicted a bit of a drop off because of the youth, but it could be worse than i anticipated now.

obviously i would have preferred he stick around for a couple more years and coach up the new guys he recruited, but hopefully we hire a coach that can either keep the young guys here and/or bring in some new talent.

Assistant at VCU for five years and part of the final four staff. A bit older of a coach than Shaka or Wade at 44, but I think that might lead to some longevity in the position. VCU is a great long-term job for the right coach, maybe this will be the one to stick around.

Guessing Pat is seeing there could be some better opportunities out there he can jump on. As a Xavier fan, hoping this doesn't mean Mack called him up and was like Pat, just wait a minute and this X job will be yours *wink**wink*

Either that or some other school that really wanted Pat got a hold of him.

But more likely that IU is waiting and will announce Mack after Xavier loses. That'd make a lot of sense for both Indiana and Xavier.

Amaker's been beating or nearly beating high-major teams with *Harvard kids.* Houston on the road this year. Nearly Kansas on the road year before, UNC in the tourney year before that. Two tournament wins two years in a row as a low seed. He has more NCAA Tournament wins in the last five years than JTIII has. With Harvard kids.

He's not the sexiest guy on the market, that's a no-brainer. But he's an attainable DC area guy, did a good job at Seton Hall, has done a great job at Harvard, and would be a good guy for segueing out of the Thompson era imo.

Not sure why Thompson and Shayok would leave a program that was poised to be pushing for Top 10 status again next season with them both in the rotation.

Also, aren't there plenty of top flight options out there that OSU
could fire its money cannon at? Gregg Marshall, Hoiberg, Donovan, Mack,
etc.? Y'all will be more than fine.

<-- BAUGH SO HARD

this was *THE* home run hire...and Gene SMith's stupid ass blew it

every HS coach in the state LOVED miller...and now we have to recruit against him

the only reasn we even got Oden and Conley and Deshaun Thomas is bc IU sucked....there goes ANY chance of nabbing any elite Indiana/Illinois players

our recruiting classes for the next two years are abysmal...we're losing players to Butler (all due respect, srsly) and Providence smfh

like this year and with marc loving

sometimes it works out (butler, diebler, buford)

sometimes it doesnt (marc loving , justin fritts (who? exactly)

but yea, Thud offered his brother Andre (who isnt a big 10 caliber player imo) just to ensure the commitment of Kaleb (who I dont think is worth two scholarships essentially). I wanted us to get Sterling Manley frm Pickerington (10 miles away frm campus) but he went to the TAR HEELS. Roy just comes and poaches a (longer/more athletic) player literally from our backyard

smh.

Thud is a toothless old dog in recruiting now and its painful. Next year we also have another undersized pg coming in with no major offers.

in the 2018 class, there is one player who i think has alot of promise (Darius Bazely) but he needs coaching.Thud is not the one...the other two ...Kyle Ahrens (older brother is on the spartans) is not that good and Dane Goodwin (who Thad gave a scholly as an 8th! grader smfh) is not that great either. OSU fans think he can be a Luke Kennard type player but I doubt it. He's killing it at the HS level tho to be fair.

and the attendance has been steady declining. i talk alot of shit about crisler but its much better than our mausoleum

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2017/03/81055/as-ohio-state-continues-to-struggle-on-the-court-attendance-keeps-dipping

gene smith came out and voiced his support, much to my chagrin but usually when an AD does that, #deadmanwalking (hopefully)

i highly doubt we make the tournament next year either. not a single player on this roster that i like besides jaesean tate and he needs to shoot 10k free throws a day. if ur gonna be an undersized pf, make those.

according to Goodman they offered him $4 Million, but Mack turned it down.

Of course Mack and Goodman are friends, so it also wouldn't surprise me if this was a bit made up, so Mack could pressure X to give him more money.

is what I'm seeing.

And if that's the case, would OSU already have his replacement chosen? Or will they really wait until the season is over and do a full on search?

I feel like either way OSU has completely botched this and should've sent Thad packing as soon as the 2016-17 season was over. I mean Thad had a good career there, but not like he was some untouchable legend that they had to be delicate about.

I mean if you are a high level recruit, why would you even consider OSU right now if Thad is "retiring" at the end of this year and you don't know who's taking over. Add that on to the recruiting struggles Thad has already had this past year.

I'm sure this means that they're waiting for a big fish. Any respectable coach-- Gregg Marshall, hint hint, or perhaps your man Chris Mack-- ain't leaving this late in the game. So unless they were planning on taking an NBA coach, they kind of have to wait at this point. Besides, if they can land a big fish, the recruiting would probably turn around fairly quickly.

Yeah, with the right coach and right program, you can turn things around pretty quickly recruiting wise. Just surprised OSU was fine with basically throwing in the towel for this year. They should've known it was time for the Matta era to come to an end sooner.

I might actually be making that percent a little high.

Stevens will be paid out the ass to stay in Boston and he's adding Fultz to an ECF roster.

OSU, talent-wise, will be an extremely empty cupboard for whoever signs on.

read dummies.

i admitted there was a slim chance.

boston would have to crash and burn (hence his firing) and we would have to hire an interim for the upcoming season while conducting a search all season long

Gene Smith said no interims and he is looking to make a permanent hire in the next few days (i have a feeling hes already reached out to the replacement and come to an understanding)

didn't stop Texas from firing him. So I still think they should've done this "firement" right when the 16-17 season ended.

Matta made the Final Four six years ago and still had top recruiting classes in the conference as recently as three seasons ago.

I'm not saying they shouldn't have inquired earlier whether Matta might consider retiring at season's end-- they probably should have-- but I don't think Barnes is an apt comparison.

Mack (non-Marshall pick #1)
Buzz Williams (this would be a really good get imo)
Cronin (unsexy but solid, as dude develops talent and wins)
Holtmann (could be worse-- a risk/reward pick)
Sean Miller (lol, zero chance)
Tom Crean (again, could be worse-- they'd start landing 5 stars again, at least)

You realistically won't have a coach until mid-June on a roster that will *need* a grad transfer or two to be even remotely competitive year one.

Arizona has the preseason #1 team in the country and Miller is already a top 10 paid coach. He's the best recruiter on the West Coast by a mile.

Miller ain't going to Ohio State. Zero percent chance.

Again, as I said above, call Gregg Marshall and Chris Mack. Offer them the 4+.

Mack's resume at Xavier so far is good but not as good as what Matta achieved at Butler and then Xavier.

Not the same

In response to Reply # 146

Four Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight appearance in eight seasons. (Mack also made that Elite Eight with his best player injured for the whole run.) Matta made one Elite Eight in four seasons.

Matta won more games pre-OSU, true. But Mack is no damn slouch. Matta in his career made it to the second weekend of the tourney six times out of 16 eligible seasons. Mack has made it in four of his eight.

Shit, I'm still mad at Matta for not getting past the 2nd round in David West's senior season.

Mack's resume is better than Matta's pre-OSU resume, and ever since X joined the Big East he's been killing it recruiting wise. Now I don't think Mack is going to leave right now, but if OSU throws him an offer he can't refuse it wouldn't shock me or anything. I'm just happy it's happened after the NBA draft deadline so I don't have to worry about Bluiett leaving.

but that's the Duke alum effect, you can't help it.

It's much more annoying when Walmart wearing Duke fans act that way.

I clearly said my choices were a wishlist. Good thing Urban Meyer was available when Tress "retired" or we might have ended up with Brady Hoke. Gene Smith is a fucking moron

He's trash Frank. Barely above 500 in the last 4 seasons and his best recruit was his son. Wake me up in 3 seasons when Barney Rubble gets canned.

You end up getting sucked in by posters who admittedly don't watch the sport you spend hours obsessing over daily but also insist you're wrong. Any rebuttal to those types always comes across crazy smug, and I need to do a better job of ignoring said posters.

Mike Brown would be a very interesting experiment.

Holtmann is a really safe bet. Not the sexiest hire, but definitely considered an up-and-comer on most big programs' watch lists. Might not be the elite recruiter that Smith alluded to wanting, but he's a strong player development guy, and everyone who plays for him works his ass off-- which would be a nice change from the past two or so years of Ohio State basketball.

It doesn't seem like there's a plan.

At least then you could try to catch a coach in March/April, when they may be more comfortable moving.

But they want the new regime to get into place *now.* Plus Butler has a Top 40 recruiting class coming in, so maybe they think they can poach one or two of those recruits? Not sure.

Not a very organized nor coherent search by OSU.

As laughable as the "wish list" insiders were circulating
last week (Stevens, Donovan, etc.), I still think OSU is a
great job that could have gotten a better candidate. In the end,
I still think Holtmann is a better hire than McDermott so
that is some good news.

Titus had it right with the Jent-for-one-year approach imo.

I agree with the interim, but looks like they weren't looking to spend too much money. The rumor is Holtmann was higher on the list, they lowballed him, he balked, they looked elsewhere, realized "whoops, we're fucking up," and re-reached out to Holtmann with a better deal.

Which makes sense, because... yeah, no one reaches for McDermott before Holtmann.

I don't get it.

2018 2019 Ohio HS senior class is pretty good .. If he lands Jerry Francis, Jerome Hunter, & Dwayne Cohill, I'll feel a bit better.

Edit, I hope he casts a nationwide net as well and goes after one and dones. Can't win an Ncaa title without nba talent. Villanova was a rare exception.

(and I obviously hate saying this as a Duke fan)

Only two teams in the one-and-done era have won a title while starting a one-and-done... and only two teams (both UNC teams) have had a one-and-done off the bench. The overwhelming majority don't win titles with one-and-dones.

But yeah, goes without saying that you need NBA talent. And frankly, that Villanova team did have NBA talent, just not elite talent. Plenty of the OAD era champions have lacked elite talent, but they all had a lot of players who were either NBA-bench caliber or on the cusp of NBA-caliber. That depth of talent is definitely important.

Luckily, Holtmann is a coach that can get the most out of the talent he has. So he may not need a group of all-five-stars to compete with the best talent.
