I think Byron was a pussy for allowing Kobe to do what ever he wanted. There wasnt much coaching being done when #24 was on the court.

Luke is doing a bad job with a bad team. There's a lot of player development needed and he's failing..... but so did Byron.

so not sure their intention was to tank w/Byron or not. Probably. Byron wasn't coaching in a style they wanted to roll w/moving forward.

Probably what did him in was the old school mentality he had when coaching youngsters, and his refusal to embrace pace and space. Lakers are weird though.

I couldn't tell if this was a 'shit on Luke' post or another in a long line of 'Byron is a good coach' posts, though.. so my bad.

The Kobe thing is, at best, debatable.

Even then, that had little to do with whether he was the man for the job going forward.

Do you know what did?

The question of whether or not he was the right man to lead this particular group and a fair amount of that article was correct.

That still doesn't blame him for the Lakers record.

That article blames Byron for his handling of Dlo and being an active participant in letting Kobe go full on Gunslinger all season.

You keep saying “so it’s alllll on him?” in response to, well, who knows, because I didn’t say it and neither did that article… and even if it did, it’s just one article.

You equate some responsibility with all responsibility.

You equate critique of specific decisions to blame for the entire thing.

You equate choosing not to pick up his option and deciding to go a different direction with firing him because everything is his fault.
Of course, you say this to Lakers fans as though we all blamed the entire thing on Byron. Meanwhile most of us have heavily criticized Jim, Mitch, Kobe, and Byron throughout.

Meanwhile you still can't explain what made him the best choice for us going forward.

We overachieved long enough to ponder just how much was real and how much was fools gold, but we still overachieved.

A more accurate and reasonable stance to harken back to would be preseason expectations and those weren't high at all. We clearly exceeded those expectations in the early going.

In response to Reply # 20

They didn't pick up his contract

At a time when the roster was young and there was a hot young prospect on the market from a winning program who was also a former Laker.

They went in a direction they felt was better for this particular team as constructed. Many of us fans felt the same way.

Guess what?

He's not owed a job as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Where’s all this “blame”?

Who “blamed” Byron for the Lakers record?

Please elaborate.

State your case like a reasonable human being instead of this weak ass bait post nonsense where you pose a binary question that’s based on a fundamentally false premise about a situation with several variables.

It's telling that you always need to run to this childish behavior.

Thus far you've ran to the "lose your marbles" and now it's the childish "dipshit" name calling. You're nearly always the first to enter that sort of nonsense into any discussion.

Anyhow that article doesn't even say he was fired.

What’s funny is the one thing the article genuinely does blame Byron for literally can’t be blamed on Luke: Letting Kobe run wild…. Which is true. Personally I don’t know how much of that was an edict from on high and how much was his unwillingness to get tough with Kobe. Of course, you didn’t want that. You actively supported him letting Kobe run roughshod. Hell you were incredulous at the idea that Byron needed to set clear boundaries with Kobe.

Luke isn’t getting blamed for that because, well, uh, I mean, you know, Kobe kind of retired and doesn’t play anymore. Not sure how you want to pass that onto Luke but knock yourself out. Further, you seem to think Scott was flawless and without error. You’ve never been able to accept a single mistake was made on his part. Not a single one!
Then the article makes the same point I and others here have made: The issue with Scott was came down to two factors:

1. Whether or not he was thought to be a good fit with this specific group going forward.

2. The availability of a promising young prospect from a winning team

Those two factors ultimately lead to the decision not to pick up his option.

Now please, throw another childish tantrum and point the finger at me.

So, uh, yeah. Somehow you interpret "active participant" as "entirely his fault".

What was he "blamed" for?

Note how, as always, you rely on broad brush strokes. Generalities.

"blamed for Dangelo" doesn't say anything.

You don't want to discuss the actual, specific critiques of his handling of Deangelo. It's just HE WAS BLAMED FOR DANGELO.

So again, you seem to think he didn't make a single mistake.

I mean… you avoided gems like “he’s coached five straight sub–25 win teams dating back to his time with the Cavaliers.”

You also avoid things like entering the season actively discouraging three pointers.

The article is full of valid critiques of his coaching. More importantly it touches on his relationship with the players:

“And he really couldn’t point to his relationships with Russell, Randle and the Lakers other youngsters, as he had just asked them to give up a year of their lives to serve as extras in Bryant’s goodbye documentary. How was a, “Last year was last year, this is your team now” message ever going to fly given the extraordinary circumstances around Bryant’s farewell tour? “

These are valid critiques but it still doesn’t place the blame for the Lakers record squarely on him.

What’s funny is you still can’t articulate what made him the best guy for the job. You go on and on with these generic assertions but have never once explained why he should have been kept on.

So let’s hear it.

Also, let’s see if you can grow the fuck up for once and try your hand at a civilized conversation without the petulant name calling and bratty demeanor.

More over… what’s inaccurate?

The only questionable part of that is whether or not letting Kobe run wild was a mandate from on high or whether that was under his discretion. The rest is dead on and focuses on specific aspects of his coaching.

Further, we just fired the men who hired him. That entire regime is gone. Blame for the current state of this time has quite clearly been spread around.

You can’t tell the difference between blaming him for the Lakers record and evaluating specific aspects of his actual coaching, which is what the article did.

And yet…. You still can’t explain why they should have picked up his option and you still talk like a spoiled brat mad because the convo isn’t going his way.

I LITERALLY said "The only questionable part of that is whether or not letting Kobe run wild was a mandate from on high or whether that was under his discretion."

Which, yet again, is definitively NOT saying it was "all him".

So, you know... yeah.

I mean...

You got this sarcastic laughter in at least two posts where you're definitively incorrect.

You got a lot of petty name calling.

You got a lot of generalities.

You don't know the difference between "fired" and "his contract expired and they declined the *team* option to bring him back".

But not ONE argument for why they should have picked up his option.

These are facts.

they moved on from Byron for 1 primary reason and this is their evaluation on who would work better with a young roster moving forward...not necessarily for the losing that occurred under him..

but with multiple 20 year olds...early 20s guys.... Is Byron the best guy to mold these guys moving forward?

they felt he wasn't...

Luke is 1 season in.... the front office thought Luke was better with young guys.... we still in the tank...

but if a year from now, the new front office regime doesn't see the growth they want...Luke will be gone too...

Luke doesn't have anything that Byron didn't get....B got a 2nd chance with the Lakers...Luke will get a 2nd chance...

and obviously the front office didn't like the development strategy for the young players..

sure it got to the point they were tanking..... but even late in the seasons... B wasn't playing the young players consistently....

Luke is sitting vets to play the young players.

but again....B Scott got 2 seasons...

Luke has gotten 1.....

and with a new front office, we'll have to see how long they'll stick with him.

Magic didn't hire him...

all Luke has earned is a chance to start a 2nd season..

we'll see how it turns out..

remember we're stilly paying Mike Brown....Mike D'Antoni and B. Scott...

You're the only one barking about what a travesty it was to let him go.

One would think you would be able to make a case for why he was the best available man for this job with this group of players.

All these posts and you've never made a single argument for why the Lakers should have kept him, just broad generalizations and blanket statements. Oh, and a lot of generic, childish name calling.

Meanwhile the criticism of him has been very specific and pointed across the board and the level of "blame" levied upon him has never risen to the level you keep implying. You think people are blaming it "all" on him and then post an article calling him an "active participant". It says a lot that you continue to present the things said about him as significantly worse than what is conveyed by the actual words being used.

We're done here.

Let him develop the talent instead of host a Kobe

Did the 76ers fire THEIR coach? Nope. They let him

Instead, Byron was SCAPEGOATED

>Let him develop the talent instead of host a Kobe
>farewell and tank.

That’s not an argument for why he was the best, or even a good, choice to coach this team.

It’s also not an argument for why the Lakers should have picked up his contract… which expired and left the Lakers a team option to decide whether to pick it up.

>Did the 76ers fire THEIR coach? Nope. They let him
>ride out through the tank.
Please explain how this translates to why the Lakers owed Byron a job.

Please explain how and why the Lakers- or any team- should keep their coach simply because another team kept their coach.

>Instead, Byron was SCAPEGOATED

No, he was criticized for specific choices he made. In the case of his handling of Kobe I don’t know that there’s enough information to determine how much of that choice was mandated by his bosses and how much of that choice was made at his discretion.

The people who hired and fired him were ACTUALLY fired, by the way, which means they ultimately got much more actual blame for the state of the Lakers than Byron ever did.

Still, you haven’t made an argument for why it was in the best interest of the Lakers to keep Byron as the coach of a young team he didn’t have a particularly strong relationship with.

So far your “argument”, if it can be called that, is “Let him do it” and “Philly didn’t fire their coach”.

That’s just about the same as saying “because I want it” and “my friend’s mom doesn’t do it that way”.

It’s telling that you can’t build an argument on actual merit.

Cool. Didn't say you did.

I told you that you can’t make an argument for why Byron was the best- or even good- choice for this particular team going forward.

The OP asked the question of blame but you’ve expressed in this post as well as other posts your position that they should have kept Byron.

Since they had a team option they had a choice to make and even the most incompetent manager is going to hire who they think is the best available person for the job, regardless of their personal criteria for what constitutes “best”.

So, I never said you called him the best and if you think they should have kept him on as coach you clearly think he’s a good candidate for the job….. and yet you still can’t explain what makes him so good for the job.
>the question is "why was Byron BLAMED" for shit that
>Luke is not being BLAMED for
>
>You backtracking and lying!!
>
>LOL!

You asked why Byron was blamed for the record and Luke isn’t.

Then you posted an article that blames Byron for his handling of DLo and for his *participation* in allowing Kobe to go all gunner all season long, but doesn’t blame their record on Byron.

So, based on the, uh, “evidence” you provided, Luke literally can’t be blamed for Kobe and literally can’t be blamed for Byron’s relationship with DLo.

I don't think anyone thought the Lakers should be winning more. I remember more the critique being that he wasn't playing Randle and Russell enough, who are both common players anyway.

Further it's not like the Lakers threw Scott under the bus. Within a few months, they also made changes at every level of their organization from team president to GM to their fucking PR department.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

i work with kids, particularly those in middle school. i constantly remind them that the reason people keep picking with them, or talking trash, or whatever they did that got them upset is because it gets a rise and the reaction they are looking for.

if everyone just left OE all by himself without engaging, he'd get bored and stop, or leave. yall give him what he wants, alas the posts continue.

That’s awfully imperfect logic.
Simply ignoring people can and sometimes does work, but not always.
In fact, being ignored can often make people like that act out worse and worse.
Further, the person in the position of, for arguments sake, “referee”, has a choice:
-Either blame the kid/person being picked at/fucked with/call it what you want by placing the onus on them not to react or respond to the offender.

Or, much more reasonably?

-Blame the aggressor and deal with them directly. Establish consequences and follow through.

All too often in these situations the bullies get treated with kid gloves while those who are stuck dealing with them are given the onus to suck it up, ignore it, etc.

The behavior of people like OE is often dismissed. That’s just how he is! Ignore him! If you didn’t react, he’d stop!

Thing is a part of what makes a guy like that tick is that others will simply make allowances for the way he acts and he knows it.

Trade those enabling voices for those that consistently condemn the behavior and it’s a different story. But as long as guys like you blame those who react to guys like him for his actions? He has zero incentive to stop and will find someone who will respond the way he likes.

I understand conventional wisdom with this but I think it actually goes a long way to help this sort of behavior continue.

that's all i'm saying. there's really no arguing this.

btw, i agree with most of everything else you said. and i also didn't say that the bully/aggressor isn't addressed in real life situations that actually matter in regards to dealing with the kids i work with.

but we're talking about replies on a message board, not anything that actually matters in real life.

>but we're talking about replies on a message board, not
>anything that actually matters in real life.

Here's the problem with this statement: you applied an example of something off board because you felt the basic principles apply. I responding based on how that logic plays out.

If the initial analogy applies to the message board, then so does my response, which you generally agree with.

The "not anything that matters in real life" part can be applied to the vast majority of our message board activity and if that's the case it's of no consequence whether or not anyone entertains OE on the board.

And that's just it: we're all here and we all interact to whatever degree and it's completely valid to address those interactions on board, regardless of whether or not it ultimately 'matters' in real life.

In fact... For all this talk of "giving him what he wants" I haven't reacted at all the way he wants me to despite his repeated attempts to bait me.

It's his own post and if anyone is going nuts, losing marbles, and showing instability it's the guy who calls names and hurls ad hominem attacks.

I'm responding the way I am to highlight the way he acts toward people in completely civil and reasonable discussions that just so happen disagree with him.

Fyi while I meant the words I wrote it's also a mild form of trolling.

Which is exactly the way I've successfully trolled a troll post into oblivion. I just did it in a way that wouldn't satisfy his desire to elicit a more incredulous reaction.

My reaction each time, as now, is to point out these facts and address you like a reasonable human being.

To which you respond with more name calling and ad hominem attacks while you avoid the details of the subject at hand.

Yeah, great "bait" job there, Badly Aging Message Board Persona.

That year was all about Kobe's farewell tour but the Lakers lost a lot of games and someone had to be the fall guy since Kobe retired. The Lakers had to sell tickets so messaging that season as a farewell to Kobe was the best way to go about things.

This year is about giving the young guys time to gel as a team and find themselves. The snitch talked about it during this season while sneak dissing Kobe. Luke is a young coach in the biggest market with a passionate rabid fan base so he gets a pass. Magic is at the helm so things will get better.

If it had been a "normal" losing season, maybe the brass would have needed to blame someone. But because it turned into Kobe's farewell tour, they had cover to keep Byron. They got rid of him not because they had to, but because - right or wrong - they thought that Luke would do a better job developing the young guys moving forward. And that's what coaching decisions SHOULD be based on: who will do a better job moving forward, not whether or not the current coach "deserves" to stay in his job.

In response to Reply # 111

just because people don't actively want him fired doesn't mean he is not being criticized. i don't recall people calling for scott's firing either. the scott deal was a mutual understanding, he got money and a job when no one else was offering and he coached out the guaranteed part of his deal. what would have been the wisdom toward keeping him on? it's not a matter of rewarding performance--and he didn't win anyway--it's about the best situation for the team. You see that often and it works. Did the Pistons need to fire Rick Carlisle? Did he "deserve" to stay on? Did the Blackhawks have to fire Denis Savard? No, but in the end they were right to turn to the guys they did. They were going the other way, transitioning from competing to contending. These guys are going from not trying to kinda trying in the near future. Different situations but the same dynamic, looking for the right guy for their situation.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Or do I see questions being raised that he's in over his head.

I'm not a Laker fan so I don't care either way. I check in on Julius and that's it.

I know Byron caught shit for Ju's & DLo's development when they were rookies, but they improved in the 2nd half under Byron.

But I don't hear or read the same critiques for Ingram's development or Ju's and D-Lo's sigh seasons.

Now the players are the problem.

It's all suspect.

you listen to 710 and on air personalities and callers have been questioning Luke's rotations and Dangelo's development, etc. which have been been less than stellar lately. No one in LA/SoCal area is holding him up as the next Poppovic.

People pretend like Byron got a worse deal than D'Antoni or something. They both got 2 years with doo doo rosters and the Lakers got impatient. Like somehow Byron Scott's hiring and firing was only about race and not about the Laker's dysfunction and lack of direction. People give reasonable explanations for why they might have wanted to move on from Byron i.e. old school coach vs. new school players, outdated style of play, etc, but nah, none of that could be a real reason the Lakers let him walk.

Plus when comparing to Luke, shit... Luke isn't even done with his first season (a season in which they were expected to tank for a top 3 pick), so the seat isn't quite as hot for Luke as it was when Byron didn't re-upped after 2 years coaching a wallowing franchise. Enjoy caping for Byron, I guess.

he made a couple comments that made him sound out of touch--too old-school if anything--but i think that all blew over in a day or two.

L.A. media had a very positive relationship with him. the fans obviously respected his playing career and knew he was a veteran coach. there was a pretty baseline if not lower level of hysteria when adjusted for lakers fans. every team has someone in their fan base calling for the coach's head, the same idiots who complain about the officiating after every loss. bad teams are more likely to have those guys. are we talking talk radio people? two years ago i heard calls saying "we need to BUILD AROUND KOBE BRYANT." does anyone realize how fucking insane that is? he was 126 years old with a series of major injuries and contemplating his retirement tour. so some people need to be dismissed readily.

if we are talking OKP, again i mostly just read people crying about randle and russell's minutes. they were wrong for the most part but i hardly think they were out to kill scott.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Certainly not in Year 1 when they really had nobody and not at the end of Year 2 when the young guys were getting more tick. He had the team competing pretty hard and anyone who was halfway realistic (read: approximately one fifth of Laker fans) knew they didn't have any real talent.

Again I think you have to adjust hysteria for the fan base and also look at national coverage for a level-headed look. I didn't see Scott being fried. He did his job and got his money. If Walton doesn't deliver improvement next year, he will get shit-canned, too, and that's despite having the expectation of staying longer and doing more.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

he's young and has a lot to learn, but he did serve as head coach for the best basketball I've ever seen a team play. I know there's a ton of caveats one needs to throw in, but it's enough that I don't mind a downtrodden organization taking a shot on a young guy.

Partially because I've been busy and partially because I dont wanna feed the trolls.

Here is what I'll say.

Byron was a scapegoat in some ways, great in some ways, and rightfully blamed in some ways. All can be true. For example, he definitely improved D'Angelo and Randle after benching them - which many people roasted him for (and I've said this before, it's in the 'chives).

He had to deal with tanking and the Kobe farewell tour. Certainly no reason to have expected him to be good.

Now - the word around is that players would like to play for Luke. Whether that is Luke's player's coach style or because the Lakers have a lot of young talent remains to be seen - plus nobody worthwhile has come to LA yet so even if people were telling the truth, it kinda doesn't matter. I don't think too many young NBA talents were clamoring to play for Byron Scott. The old school mentality just really isn't for most young NBA talents - especially when he says old school shit like this:

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/24756818/byron-scott-on-3-pointers-i-dont-believe-it-wins-championships

All this said, I've criticized the last 4 coaches of my favorite team - sometimes fairly, sometimes unfairly. I think people expected more from Byron - which was unfair given the circumstances, but I think you have to understand a Laker fanbase who is CLAMORING for some positives from the last few years of drudgery truly wanted more from a beloved player from the glory days. I'm not sure Luke is the guy - despite a great start - to lead this team back to that, but since this is his first job and he has the benefit of not dealing with the old guard, we have no choice but to see what he can do.

I'm not happy with the job Luke has done after the first 20 games. I've barely chimed in because I've been busy but I think he's made a lot of really dumb decisions and I've had nothing but shit to deal with at work lately. I'm not super into the direction of things right now.

It was LIFTED and NOT given context from a fucking TWEET.

This was taken out of context, Einstein.

Byron Scott is an educated, smart man. He was making a
particular point about team building. He was saying that
it doesn't win alone. It was taken out of context because
UNFAIR shit for brainslike YOU are LOOKING FOR A REASON to
not like him.

This is TOTALLY fucked up and UNFAIR.

You're SEARCHING for shit to not like, which is exactly
what we're talking about.

TOTALLY unfair.

Because YOU DO REALIZE THAT BYRON has been as far in the
playoffs as PRINGLES ahs, right!?!?

Oh....but "Byron coached the Nets in a weak Eastern Conference"

You guys are such unfair sacks of shit....it's embarrassing.

You PROVED my point:

You are searching for a reason to not like him, and
are judging him differently than you judge Luke.

On the other hand, you guys BEND OVER BACKWARDS to
squeeze positive out of Luke.

Byron been to the NBA FINALS, bro. With Jason Kidd and a
bag of dicks.

And how did y'all respond?

"The Eastern Conference was weak that year."

Did you squeeze any positive out of that? That anytime
he has ANY talent he actually wins?

Anyone bring up that narrative?

See,

That is BULLSHIT.

Y'all WANT A reason to hate and MAKE SHIT UP.

Just like you did with that BULLSHIT, RANDOM ASS "Quote"
from a goddamn TWEET

Seriously, GTFOH

Y'all made my point FOR ME

Bwahahahahahahah

Sad thing is that "rumor," even if true, essentially says
that Luke was Draymond's weed carrier and so kept him
happy. So Luke "offensive genius" Walton was really just a
babysitter

So the losing hasn’t been any of the coaches’ faults. They haven’t had a roster that can win in the West since Kobe tore his achilles and Howard left. Kobe’s entire presence(contract, health, lack of production, age, etc), the lack of draft picks towards the end of that run, no good FA’s would come, etc. left the well dry.

At least there’s some talented young pieces with some value and potential on the roster now. Cap situation is better. All about player development and roster management going forward.

The big men need to get some damn rebounds.
You got a rookie PG leading the team in rebounds.
Ain’t no damn way Lopez and Bogut should
be combining for a 7 rebound average.

And not fouling down 4, with 2 fouls still to get into the bonus and only 8 seconds difference between the game clock and shot clock.....starting to wonder if he’s in over his head. Jeez. You can have a good philosophy and be good managing people. But that’s bad game coaching. Basic stuff too.
