"Motorsports 2017"

I think it'll be a good year.

Daytona was a wreck-fest, re-confirming that plate racing probably needs to change somehow, but the last ten laps were good clean fun. Not sure about this new stage scoring thing, but it might make for interesting race strategy. Intrigued to see how it plays out tomorrow at Atlanta.

The new F1 regs are...that shark fin needs to go. The cars would be beautiful but for that monstrosity. Evidently lap times are gonna be the fastest ever, but since the cars are just as aero-dependent as last year, I don't see any more overtaking. Just hope that either Ferrari or Red Bull are closer to the Mercs, else it's Lewis in a walk.

WRC souped up their cars too, apparently approaching the old Group B specs. On the plus side, that's gonna make for some wild racing. On the minus side, Group B was abolished because of all the deaths...

Actually gonna try to watch more Formula E this year too.

I'm definitely looking forward to this year, I'm mostly here for F1 and all three Moto GP classes.

It's hard to talk about testing with any assurance, but Ferrari looked solid and reliable. Still rooting for Hamilton, but I'd be happy to see Bottas do well. Feel bad for my Canadian rookie messing up Williams days with two crashes.

I'm really hoping Moto GP lives up to the hype I'm building in my head. Vinales has looked too good in testing, the kind of challenger someone like Marquez has to shut down to to challenge Rossi's place in history, this is the time when you realize how hard it can be for someone to stay on top that long. I'm really hoping Suzuki and Ducati keep improving their form, Ducati has a Lorenzo signing to back up and Suzuki were trending upward last season, four factory teams fighting for the podium would be amazing.

It'll be tough, but it's also an opportunity for him. In the class they just took him from, he had a pretty messy first season but then dominated the next, I gotta root for the local-ish boy! It's good that Massa still looks ready to take whatever chance he might get this season as well.

>I gotta follow more MotoGP. That is all.

I used to feel like such an elitist hipster douchebag about Moto GP lol, back when the commentators could say there's more passing in one corner than an entire F1 race! But even with all the changes either have gone through and me being more sensible, it's still hard to imagine something more exciting than just a good Moto GP race. And when they're great it's untouchable. I know BeIN finally got all the rights to it in Canada, I'm not sure what it's like in the States, FOX Sports taking over SPEED down there is what screwed me over up here for a while. But if you can watch it try to fit it in it's only 45 minutes to an hour of your Sunday so it's nothing compared to an F1 Sunday.

Some of them look fine, like the Sauber and Haas rides (the little cutout looks like someone stuck a box cutter blade in the rear). The fin on the Williams looks horrible thoough.

All told, I am loving the liveries of the cars this year. The Toro Rosso car looks better than the RB car. Nice seeing Mclaren back in orange and black (though they are not off to a great start so far in testing) and the Renault looks badass.

Whether they are sandbagging during some testing (and they may be) it's hard to say how much faster M/B may be against the rest of the field. It SHOULD be Lewis' championship to lose, but we see how that went last year, so... I still think Alonso is an ass (though a talented ass, I'll admit) but I almost feel sorry for him as his tenure at Mclaren is not going well at all. Still, it was his choice to leave Ferrari.

They don't build their own road car engines, though I think they do have a hand in design. Starting from scratch on an F1 program would be worse than the Hondas, and a lot more expensive.

And yeah, sacrilege, but worse than finishing 9th or last in the Constructor's? They timed even with the Saubers today...

I'm excited for the first F1 race on track that really lives up to the rivalry hype they're building up off track. I don't know if I prefer Seb and Hamilton's love for eachother or the tension he had with Rosberg for a Championship battle.
Honda's still Honda, Renault's engine's fallen off a bit, but Verstappen is gonna Verstappen and it feels like Ricciardo might have a tough teammate battle on his hands.

I was hoping for a tight field in Moto GP but Yamaha appear to be a cut above the other bikes, and Vinales a cut above the other riders. Marquez needs to find a front tire he likes, and maintain some of his authority at COTA coming up. I'm liking Zarco's rookie promise coming up from Moto 2, when Yamaha is good even their satellite bikes seem on their level and other than that unfortunate crash in Qatar I don't think he's throwing this opportunity away.

Might.

Right now, I'm just happy Ferrari's fast.

The new cars look cool, and they're apparently fun to drive, but I don't see any better overtaking. Couple of good ones in China, I guess, from the highlights I watched. I can't stay up for these damned Asian races.

And I bet the Renault engines get better as the season goes on. They know what they're doing, the French.

Go Haas.

Passing was still possible in China but not the usual DRS passing, but some people seemed to approve of really needing to make one. Some tracks that's probably not as possible as Turn 6 was though.

Renault always have a strong car in the 'infields' so they never need the best engine, but they need to get closer for the better parts of their car to stand out.

Haas actually hasn't stood out as much as the start of last season, but it's good that they feel established.

RBR just needs a tiny bit more, and it's a 3-way battle. Too bad about Max's brakes, or this would have been an even better race than it was.

It is entirely possible than McLaren have both the best chassis and worst engine on the grid. I'm never gonna buy a Honda anything. Even a lawnmower.

A lot of fans have waited for a Vettel/Hamilton fight, and it looks like they are going to get it. Overall I feel Mercedes may still be a bit faster than the Scuderia squad, but there is no doubt that Ferrari power unit is right there. RBR seems a tick or two off, but I wouldn't count them out. At the very least Danny and Max are going to keep them honest.

Slowly starting to feel bad for Alonso. What in the world is going on with that Honda PU? Somebody is committing harikari over there if this keeps up

I think that Mercedes still has the better equipment. It is a tick faster in the practice and qualifying rounds. Vettel is making Ferrari go head to head with Hamilton because the difference in equipment isn't as glaring as it has been the last couple of seasons. Vettel is a better driver if all things were equal, and he is really killing it so far. But I still think Mercedes has the upper hand in equipment, that should help Hamilton edge him out before the end of the year.

RBR can't hang with them. I really do like Verstappen. They will be 3rd when said and done. I can also see a rift between Bottas and Hamilton if they tell him a few more times to make way for Hamilton.

Enjoyable season so far. I hope Vettel and Hamilton keep going head to head. Vettel makes up in the races, what he can't do in qualifying.

But thanks for the memories. Always one of the most fun guys to watch. And listen to. Hope he sticks around in the commentary booth.

i haven't been following as closely the past few years as i once did, but Jr is my dude. i'm glad he's retiring for long term reasons, and i definitely wish he had gotten a championship. i think it woulda happened if Theresa hadn'ta effed DEI up, but who knows.

i don't think he'll be in the booth, though, he's a bit too shy. i think he'll stay an owner and close to racing in that capacity, but i could be wrong. his new wife seems to be helping him break out of his shell, according to his own statements.

Tense last 20 laps. Ballsy call by Ferrari. But I am happy Bottas finally got a win. Great season ahead overall.

Not sure where that leaves RB. I think Ricciardo could have been in play but either he or Max have had braking issues the last 2 races.

Ferrari has definitely figured something out. While their PU is likely on par to Mercedes this year (still too early to say whether they have a faster unit) their chassis setup looks to be better, allowing better use of their tires this far in the season. Vettel is a fantastic driver who knows how to get the most out of his tires however bad they may be (Lewis is great at it too, but Vettel may have a better knack for it), but he was making up ground on a few laps on older tires than Bottas was on fresh ones. And before the tire change Vettel was taking pretty big chunks of time out of Bottas too. I'm sure the guys at Petronas are scrambling to get that sorted out between the next round of upgrades.

Mclaren, WTF?

Watched several interviews with Christian Horner the last couple of weeks, and it sounds like they're gonna have pretty much a brand new car for Spain, and given their history, the chassis upgrades will probably be fantastic, Adrian Newey being who he is. But that doesn't address the engine deficit, so my suspicion is that they'll be closer, but still 5/6.

Probably going to come down to tire strategy and who blinks first between Mercedes and Ferrari. Glad Ricciardo got on the podium, but unless something drastic happens during a race, that may be as high as he hopes to get this year.

Shoutout to Force India ans their Pink Panther racers both making a top 10 finish. At least Alonso finished the race. Maybe going circle track racing will give him a boost

https://www.motorsport.com/wsbk/news/hayden-suffered-severe-brain-damage-in-accident-907484/

Former MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden has suffered severe brain damage as a result of his bicycle accident, a medical statement issued on Thursday confirmed.

The American remains hospitalised in the Intensive Care unit in the Bufalini hospital in Cesena, having been hit by a car while riding with friends on Wednesday.

In a 17:00 CET update, the hospital confirmed that Hayden's condition remains extremely critical.

A statement said the 35-year-old suffered serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage in the accident and that his prognosis remains unknown.

Hayden's fiancee Jackie has been by his side so far, and she has been joined by his mother Rose and his brother Tommy, who had flown from the United States.

MotoGP legend and Hayden's friend Valentino Rossi paid homage to the American rider, who beat him to the MotoGP title in 2006.

"Very, very bad news from yesterday," said Rossi ahead of the French Grand Prix on Thursday. "I spoke straight away with a doctor, my friend, and he said that from the very first moment the situation was very difficult for Nicky.

"And now with a bit more time you start to understand. It's a great shame because Nicky is a great rider for sure, a great talent, a world champion and always at the top, but especially a very good guy.

"Coming from a good family of racers, from his father to his two brothers, always a good guy, always smiling, so for sure it's very bad. I think the situation is very bad but everybody, we hope for the best."

Alonzo comes to the US and STILL has engine problems. Nice to see the crowd give him a standing ovation. I'm now actively hoping he goes elsewhere next year. McLaren/Honda seem to have gone backwards if that's even possible. He's got to be absolutely furious

Button was doing a gentleman's drive knowing neither he or the car was up to speed so he stayed out of everyone's way, and still ended up in an accident with Wehrlein. I've never seen a F1 car on it's side like that. Not the way to go out for Button, but an extremely classy drive in a disappointing day.

Kimi should have won Monaco, but the tire strategy favored Vettel. Rare to see a 1-2 finish that isn't Mercedes, and this is the first time Mercedes is playing catch up since the new engine regs came through.

This is the second race where Hamilton crapped the bed again. Making it to 7th was admirable, but if he hopes to get his 4th championship he's going to have to be lights out the rest of the way.

And yeah, good showing for Haas

Upgraded engine, some tweaks to the car to get more from the tires, PP, matched Senna's pole count, received one of Senna's actual helmets (sweet) and ran the race from the jump. 1-2 Mecedes win definitely helps the constructors, and not having Vettel on the podium does help him gain some ground. Nice touch with the Union Jack flag out the car, much like Senna used to do

Speaking of Vettel, he drove from, what, 14th up to 4th? Drive of the day for me. Fantastic driver and car for Ferrari. I'm still riding for Lewis to win it all at the end of the day, but Sebastian is making it harder for him than Rosberg could.

Bottas shouldn't be overlooked in this either. Extremely strong run in finish 2nd. Whether he's that much better driver than his stint at Williams let on or whether the Mercedes car is that much better than Williams is hard to say. Still, I'm happy for him.

Force India really showed how potent the engine upgrade for Mercedes, being able to tussle with Ferrari during the closing 1/4 of the race. How Ferrari will respond and whether Hamilton and Bottas were running their engines full out is yet to be seen. I can't wait for Monza

Two drivers I feel the worst for have to be Mad Max and Alonso. I think Verstappen has DNF in half the races this season because of his car. Hate to have one of the more talented and exciting drivers sidelined by car issues. As for Alonso, it's becoming the rule that he doesn't finish. Good to see him go in the stands and get some love from the fans, as he's getting no love from Honda. While it has been bandied around that he go to IndyCar, I don't know if that plays out. Thing is, what team would sign him? Will he even like a full season of left turn racing? Hasn't worked out extremely well for JPM. Maybe Ferrari dumps Kimi (or Kimi calls it quits) and resign Alonso, assuming he didn't burn all his bridges when he left?

And shoutout to Sir Jean Luc Picard doing a Shooey. Bring on Baku in 2 weeks

You've lost your mind. He won the CART series in '99, won the 500 twice, and only lost the 2015 title on a tiebreaker. 15 wins in 92 races...how much more should he have won?

Montoya may not be a HUGE name in Indy or NASCAR, but 2 wins at Indy is nothing to sneeze at. On the one hand, Indy and NASCAR don't quite have the cachet that F1 does (not to sound elitist or like Hamilton poo-pooing Indy drivers). But a racer will race anything, so any crossover race driver is good with me. So I guess the question is does Alonso want to race for the prestige or race where he stands a chance to get a win. If he stays at F1, the chances of him getting on a team that can run with Mercedes or Ferrari (or RB) don't look promising right now, though it's still quite early in the season. Could Palmer be out at Renault at the end of the year, and will they get a new engine supplier? That could work, but still, it's early.

However it shakes out I hope Alonso is content.

IndyCar's prestige took a huge hit after the series split, but I'd like it to get back to where it was in the '70s and '80s. No reason it can't, because the racing is excellent, and a couple more global stars like Alonso would really help rebuild the brand.

Definitely a war of attrition. Happy for Danny, Bottas should get drive of the day, and Ham and Vet can go slap box in the corner until next week.

Shame about the headrest though. Hamilton could have won, Vettel would have been down on points and the cap could have seriously shrunk. Instead, Vettel opens up by 2 points. This season just keeps getting crazier.

His pole setting lap in the rain will be the stuff of legends. More impressive than the actual race, which is pretty much over by the second chicane unless there's a massive crash or breakdown. Petronas still has outright power over the field, but Singapore may well swing the tide again, as Mercedes rarely does well there (and could well come in 4th or 5th if Ferrari and RB are on point). Still, good win overall for Hamilton, Bottas and company

This was the absolute best case scenario for Hamilton and Mercedes with the front runners all being taken out before the 1st corner. Instead of being down 4-10 points Hamilton is now up 28 with upcoming races the Mercedes cars should work quite well at. While Vettel's dash to the left was a legal move, it was definitely ill timed. I'd put more of the onus of the accident on him, as Max really didn't have anywhere to go (backing out wouldn't have worked as his and Kimi's tires were interlocked). Assuming Hamilton's engine doesn't explode like last yeat, he has to be the odds on favorite going to Malaysia. At that point, Vettel will need a similar disaster to befall Hamilton to make a run for it. Vettel also now has to worry about Bottas overtaking him (though I think Vettel could hold him at bay)

Alonzo's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad season continues, as he drives around the mess and still gets hit and taken out, on a track where the McLaren could have been quite competitive. Then again, the accident could have just spared the heartbreak of another engine failure, which seems to just be a standard feature of that power unit.

even if kimi hadn't been there, max had to slow down or move to avoid him, which is what vettel wanted.

had verstappen not been there, vettle would have slammed into kimi anyway, so I can't blame him one bit.

Unless Mercedes implodes the next 4 races Vettel can't catch Hamilton. If Bottas can manage to podium he may be able to catch Vettel for 2nd. If Ferrari can't figure out what's going on with that engine, they may have to swap it and take the penalty when they come to Texas

2nd 1/2 of the season has not been kind to Maranello

Understatement of the season, right there.

There's an outside chance, if Ferrari keep up their bullshit, that RBR overtakes them in the Constructor's. That might be the battle to watch, at this point.

It was all good until Vettel slashed and crashed in Singapore. Was downhill after that. Kimi was on quite a tear yesterday for most of the race before falling off

COTA should be interesting. I'm making plans to go next year

Find a way to watch today's race in Japan online however you can, and if you don't want to watch the next two 'Asia' flyaways coming up, I don't know what to tell you.
They are delivering what F1 and Ferrari have unfortunately failed to do recently. A battle for the race win between the two Championship front-runners. A points gap in the teens. A last 3 laps - and 4 corners - the likes of which you will not see on 4 wheels. Watch it.

I've been rooting for my boy Dovi for a long time, it's great to see him and Ducati this competitive again.

That was a bit more than clipping the curbing. Hate to see Max get pulled from the podium like that (again). Still, fantastic drive. Had he not had as many reliability issues during the first half of the season he may well have been in the mix for 3rd or 2nd in the driver standings.

Mercedes still has the best power and Lewis knows how to use it. Even with the bad start it was just a matter of time before he could get into DRS range and it was a wrap for Vettel. They are still fighting for sure, but barring a catastrophic failure the driver's championship should be done in Mexico. That would be 4 straight constructors and drivers for Petronas (though probably not the 1/2 finish of the past years. Not sure what to make of Bottas' 2nd half fade).

And of course, the Honda engine has to die on Alonso's car. It's a season mandate

Sometimes when you win, you really lose, and sometimes when you lose, you really win, and sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie, and sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose.

Or

Congrats to Lewis Hamilton for getting lapped and still winning the championship in one of the most unlikely outcomes of the race day. He could have parked the car in the paddock, got twisted off champagne by lap 60 and still staggered out to the post race interviews as the winner. Nobody really gave a damn about the post race ceremony, which was sad because Max was lights out. Anticlimactic or not, Lewis has 4 titles to his name. Could he have got 5 if his car were more reliable last year? Yeah. But he's in rarefied air now. Kudos to him. Now to see if Petronas can get Bottas up to 2 in the points.

Mad Max is the future. Whether he can win a chip at RB remains to be seen (with the current engine regs, I don't know). Not sure what was going on with the Renault engines yesterday. May not have liked the air at that altitude?

Renault will probably be really good next year, and I think both Max and McLaren know that, which explains the former's new contract and the latter's supplier switch.

Really hope, though, that they radically simplify the regs long-term, to get Cosworth (and whoever else) back in the game. Be great to have a third-party supplier back in the sport.
