... after looking the part in every way in college like McLemore did. I was as wrong as could be, but holy shit, the kid shot great from distance, made good choices, rebounded well for a guard, defended well for his age... like, he did *it all* and was so young doing it.

At least most of the major talents in college ball unveil some sort of potential Achilles heel. I never would've thought the reason McLemore never lived up to his potential is because of his *shooting.*

Obviously the Kings are a shit show and he's had zero structure or stability his entire career...it fucks with anyone's confidence. He's been playing well this season since the injuries, with no threat of his minutes being yo-yo'd.

I am hoping we make a shrewd low risk-high reward run at him this off-season on the cheap. His versatility fits right into our team and he would benefit immensely from how our staff handles players.

however you want to play it...

Ball has taken a team that didn't make the tourney last year.....with a coach that had one foot out the door......and he's completely rejuvenated the culture of UCLA basketball..

oh...and although he didn't play last night...his one and done turned into a half and done...

they did play against each other..

At Washington....

primed as being the 2 top freshman playing against each other...

and although Fultz scored more points....Lonzo was obviously the better player on the floor and had one of his best all around games..

get ready to add another one to your list of embarrassingly wrong agendas...

What is Kyrie better than them at?

Ball handling?

A better jumper?

I'd rather have Ky shoot it at the buzzer than them, sure

But overall John Wall is putting up MVP numbers this year and
Chris Paul has more than proven himself as the best pg in the league

It's 2017 and he's still a better defender, passer, more efficient scorer, and does more things for his team. But they are asked to play much different roles for their teams which makes a comparision kinda pointless.

I think Paul is still the more valuable all around player, but Kyrie is the more dynamic scorer and that's what his team needs him to be.

These questions were rhetorical.
That's an exhaustive list of what Kyrie is better at.
He's a better shooter.

Um, naw. He really is tho. How many other ppl are too is irrelevant.

Wall is easily having a better year than any point besides Russ and Harden.

You might not. Even in 17 CP is a superior pg.

Kyrie isn't a great "PG" and probably never will be. But he's a great scorer and plays his role well.

someone who can carry that burden. If a team has that, then the "PG" is free to just get buckets.

and i'm not sure Romar could get that team to win.

i'm a UW alum/fan.

not sure if any UW AD has had a harder decision than whether or not to fire Romar this offseason seeing as he has the 2018 #1 NBA draft pick coming and a top 5 (depending on who you trust) recruiting class overall.

i'm all the way in the fire Romar camp and have been for a couple years now. i don't care if the recruits go away, either.

i say all that to say that L's shouldn't matter AT ALL for Fultz.

we've done the dance where he saves his job by getting top recruits then failing to actually coach the team or develop the talent. We've done that dance multiple times.

What good is a top 5 recruiting class if you coach your way into the bottom half of the Pac-10?

if that's the way you wanna go.

not sure i'd go that way (lots of people wanna hire B-Roy).

i'd like to see us pay the money to hire away a legit mid major coach who gets their program to the tourney almost every year.

but yes, Romar needs to be replaced. recruits or no recruits.

The narrative against Simmons wasn't blindly the W-L column. The narrative was "he can't shoot and he doesn't try on defense." Fultz is a terrific shooter (despite getting all the defensive attention!) and tries his ass off in damn near every game. He just doesn't have a weakness.

I know much of Simmons criticism was/is stuff he needs to work on, but he was also very heavily questioned due to his team missing the tournament & folks saying/asking "Why aren't they in the tourney" even when admitting that LSU team was garbage a'la Washington this year.

... LSU's supporting cast for Simmons, talent-wise, was far superior to what Washington has rolled out for Fultz.

Antonio Blakeney, Craig Victor, and Tim Quarterman were all really highly regarded, and Quarterman gave him an upperclassman supporting cast member who'd been on a winning team before. Washington, meanwhile, had Matisse Thybulle and Noah Dickerson, who aren't as highly regarded as Blakeney and Victor were, and its upperclassman supporting cast member, Malik Dime, contributes little other than slapping fans in the stands and getting suspended for it.

Or, to put it another way, people thought Washington had the talent with Fultz to be a tournament bubble team-- they were picked preseason by the media to finish behind California and Colorado, neither of whom made the tournament either-- whereas people thought LSU would be a Top 4 in the SEC lock and contend for second place behind UK. The expectations were higher not just because of Simmons, but because of the supporting cast.

Sixers coach on Markelle Fultz's form: 'I’ve never experienced anything like this'

The No. 1 overall pick in last summer's draft hasn't played since Oct. 23 due to a shoulder injury

by Jack Maloney
Jan 15, 2018

The strange saga with Markelle Fultz's shoulder and shooting form has been one of the weirdest NBA stories in quite some time. Fultz, the Philadelphia 76ers' No. 1 overall pick, hasn't played since Oct. 23 due to a shoulder injury.

But as he nears a return -- which could be coming soon, as he's begun the final stage of his return to play protocol, and is now shooting around with the team before games -- it seems there's something still wrong with his shooting form. Numerous videos in recent days have showed him taking very awkward looking jumpers.

Even if his shoulder is now healthy, he certainly doesn't look confident in taking outside shots. Understandably, Sixers coach Brett Brown was asked about Fultz's form, and noted that he's never experience anything like this.

“I’m old, & I’ve never experienced anything like this.” -Brett Brown on Markelle Fultz saga.

10:33 AM - Jan 15, 2018

He also gave a more lengthy answer about Fultz's form, and said that they have to find home plate first, before they work on the finer points of Fultz's release.

Brown's full answer:

When you start looking at what he did, and his free throws, and how he got -- he's a rise-up guy. He's a live-ball, off-the-dribble, rise-up guy. Loading up, and being like, Kyle Korver type, that wasn't what he was. He was a wiggly, do what he wants to guard. And so, when you go back, and you say, 'How do you find that again?'

Whether it's just as a free-throw shooter, whether it's as a rise-up -- cause if I'm 6-5 and you're not point guard, I can just shoot over you -- or it's live ball, people back off, bam, he gets open when people go under a pick-and-roll. How we find what he was, is what I'm most interested in now. As far as like, taking that and moving a hand or release point, or something, we'll deal with that after we've found home plate.

Brown's response is a good one, and it seems like a healthy approach. However, it also makes it seem as though Fultz isn't actually that close to playing, even if he's now healthy. If you're still looking for "home plate" with a guy who was the No. 1 overall pick, that's a definite concern.

He's searching for a lower release point to avoid a pain response. Whether that's actual pain or anticipatory pain based on a negative feedback loop, we don't know but it doesn't really matter.

Based on his diagnosis, here's the current process:

Scapular imbalance leads to shoulder impingement --> shoulder impingement is most common from 60-120 degrees of shoulder flexion and exacerbated by having your arm in internal rotation --> Fultz's normal high release takes him through that full range of motion and any jumper requires your arm to be internally rotated - think palm down --> Fultz has now lowered his release point which is a completely new motor pattern --> re-learning a heavily ingrained motor pattern (his jumper) takes considerable time with a lot of variance in his progress (resulting in inconsistent mechanics and fluidity in the beginner and intermediate stages).

When you relate the diagnosis, jumpshot mechanics, and motor learning - what we're seeing isn't weird or a surprise.

the cause of the impingement...thereby alleviating the pain and allowing him to shoot like he always has? Or, is the repetitive motion of the high release, itself, responsible for the impingement?

We discussed this in a sports injury post on the board

I developed an impingement about 3 years ago

Dr said, as long as I can tolerate the pain, avoid surgery

Can't remember the specific poster, but somebody here had the surgery and said they would elect to not have it given a chance to do it over again

9 months of rehab and the shoulder will never be 100%

XRays showed my impingement is caused by loose cartilage sitting in the joint

I would say yes, the high release is the issue...limiting his rom on jump shots is an effort to alleviate the pain from a high release

...or have the surgery and bag the whole season...

Most impingements are resolved via correcting the root cause (most commonly poor muscular control and imbalance) rather than a surgical approach.

Surgery can be indicated for more serious injuries like type 2 and above labral tears where you have loose bodies in the joint.

Please don't paint broad brush strokes and spread medical misinformation based on your anecdotal experience and limited knowledge of. That's dangerous for providers and patients alike.

I'm guessing this new shooting form is an attempt to avoid surgery

He was drafted about 9 months ago, and this problem surfaced soon after

Posture and muscle corrections would be the first option

The fact that the issue remains, is why I'm referring to surgery

It wasn't the first option in hopes of salvaging his rookie season

Doesn't look to be working out

Wasn't trying to diagnose the entire patient population

Just offering some insight based on my personal experience and what information is available for this case

In response to Reply # 126

It may be a loose body or severe labral tear but there’s been no diagnosis of such made (and I’m sure they have MRI’d his Glenn-humeral joint at least once), that would indicate possible surgery is conservative management isn’t successful.

Based on the current diagnosis, saying surgery will somehow fix it completely misses the point of why it’s happening in the first place. Then you factor in chronic pain science, he’s likely perceiving any overhead shoulder motion as very threatening resulting in a pain response - so that makes eliminating it even more difficult bc of that vicious cycle negative association.

It's not as simple as if we fix a, then the pain will go away.

Dealing with an impingement almost inherently applies a scapular imbalance (over 70% of shoulder impingement cases also exhibit scapular dyskinesis). I trust the Philly medical staff will get the physical aspects worked out but the question for Fultz - at least in the short term - is how his body has compensated or adapted to that pain - in this case that looks to be a a lower release point.

The question is whether this is his new normal or he's just trying to work through some of these compensations.

The question is whether what we’re seeing right now is him trying to cognitively get back to his old form and be comfortable with overhead movements or whether he’s trying to permanently change his form to avoid those motions (which may be the shorter fix but how does that translate to all the other overhead motions that are requisite in basketball?).

If the latter, it wouldn’t surprise me that at some point he has to go back and really work on cognitively disassociating overhead movements and pain.

y'all already folded once to the JV team. Now you got Kawhi in the East and If I'm being really really real, i KNOW y'all would lose to the wizards in a second rounder matchup.

so, I will be poplockin to your tears for years to come. because YOU were pressed.

more or less what Ben Simmons does (obviously not as big so not as physical - although i did see a pic recently where Fultz looked like he hit a spurt...was standing next to another player and looked more 6'7" or 6'8" than 6'5" but i def. could be wrong) based off what he was doing in VERY spare minutes at the end of the season.

i mean, Simmons don't got no shot either, but Fultz boards well, can take guys off the dribble and pass.

seems like he could average 16 and 8 and 5 even if he never figures out how to shoot. obviously, that's still a "BUST" considering he's the #1 pick but some people talk about the kid like he's a walking corpse.
