6 NBA players predict who will be the league’s best in 5 years
Brett Pollakoff @BrettEP
Feb 20, 2017 at 5:31p ET

The level of young talent in the NBA might be the highest we've ever seen. There are so many players with unique skill sets that it seems almost impossible to identify which one will become the best of the bunch.

We asked a handful of NBA players to weigh in during All-Star weekend in New Orleans, and six different players gave us six different answers -- one of which was Ben Simmons, who has yet to play his first game in the regular season.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, selected by Dominique Wilkins

Dominique Wilkins: “I would say right now, and I don’t know if he’d be the best player in the league but he’d be in the top two or three, is Giannis Antetokounmpo. He’s a freak. He’s unbelievable. (What I like most about his game) is he can do multiple things. He can pass, he can handle the ball, he’s a great open-court player, he can get to the basket, and now he’s expanded his jump shot. And he’s long! One of the dunks they showed recently, he jumped almost from the free throw line in traffic. That was pretty amazing.”

Kristaps Porzingis, selected by Myles Turner of the Pacers

Myles Turner, Indiana Pacers: “There’s a lot of guys, man, the way the league is going, there’s bigs that can do a little bit of everything. Me and (Kristaps) Porzingis is cool, man, that’s my guy. I like everything he does, so I’ll give it to him."

Karl-Anthony Towns, selected by Brandon Ingram of the Lakers

Brandon Ingram, L.A. Lakers: “It’d have to be Karl-Anthony Towns. He’s a hard worker, everything I’ve heard about him is that he has a high character. When I was around him during the draft process, just his high character. He’s well-spoken, and that goes a long way. Just the work ethic that you have outside of the game that you see on TV.”

Joel Embiid (and others), selected by Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets

Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets: “I think Joel Embiid, probably, if he stays healthy. Karl-Anthony Towns, probably, because he’s just like — he can do everything. Devin Booker, he’s a great shooter. Jamal Murray. It’s literally — I cannot choose just one guy."

Devin Booker, selected by Buddy Hield of the Kings

Buddy Hield, Sacramento Kings: “I like Devin Booker’s game. I think he’s polished at the two-guard right now. Jamal Murray’s nice, too. He’s got that confidence. I like D’Angelo Russell, too. I’d probably say Devin Booker and those guys. I see the potential. The upside is big for them.”

Ben Simmons, selected by Shaquille O'Neal

Shaquille O'Neal: "Probably Ben Simmons, because he’ll be like a LeBron. Great body, great grasp for the game, score, pass, get guys the ball. So I’m going with Ben Simmons on that one.

"I’m like Jerry West. I can look at a guy and tell whether he’s going to be something or not. So when I first saw him, even though he didn’t have the tools out of LSU, I could see that he has the potential to be that. And plus, you know, nobody ever gives it to a big guy. It’s never been a big guy’s league, so they always give it to the little guys. Even though you’ve got Antetokounmpo and KAT, big guys, it’s always going to be a little guy’s league.

"Joel Embiid is starting to play very well; Devin Booker could take over, too. But in five years, I’m going to have to go with Ben Simmons."

Will probably get a quadruple double at least once in his career.

As much as I'd like to say its Joel, who will be close, Giannis is just insanely good.

Once LeBron's run is over the Sixers and Bucks will dominate the East for most of the 20's.

Unless we trade the pick. Then I'd go:

1. Giannis
2. Towns
3. AD

Then again, Steph Curry is a two-time MVP and I wouldn't have guessed that five years ago.

Mainly because he chose wack a** Washington.

I mean, how much of his numbers are usage vs actual talent?

If he was on a better team, I'd feel more comfortable with it. Same reason I was a little apprehensive about Simmons (26% usage) but at min he has size on his side.

I like Fultz tho...he can ball, I'm just a little worried he's jumped in line due to his ability to dominate the ball on a bad team. He has a 31% usage rate (comparatively, Ball's is 18%). There's a lot of good stuff to unpack about his game but his situation gives me a slight speedbump of pause.

I mean, UCLA beat them by 41. How am I supposed to compare him vs ball in that game if it's literally over before it starts?

Some of it is usage rate, but even with Simmons, there were red flags in his high usage scenario. Shooting wasn't great, no interest in defense. Fultz is shooting over 40% from 3 and actually tries hard on defense for the most part (at least until games are out of hand).

I agree that calling his judgment for picking UW into question might be fair... but shit, I'm not going to be the one left on the outside when I can't find much actual on-court play worthy of criticism. Dude is a freak.

I agree he's a freak and I wouldn't bet against him (I've actively tanked in a keeper league to have the opportunity to pick between him and Ball. I'm leaning HARD in Fultz direction just off the fact that he's been that good).

I'm just weary because we won't get to see him play against the better teams and actually compete with them.

Ball's playing with a couple future pros and a couple future D-League Euro guys who can shoot. Fultz's playing with an old sleeve of saltines someone left in the back of the closet and forgot about.

In response to Reply # 0

Giannis has been in the league for 4 years & still has a very shaky jumper which wouldn't be that much of a concern if he had a decent post-up game. He isn't like LeBron who used to the rim at will in a halfcourt set before he had a postup game or jumper. Giannis is more of a transition player & transition baskets are hard to come by in the postseason against elite defenses.

Towns is only 21 but basically has every skill in his tool box, he just needs to refine them & get stronger so he can play center full-time. Unlike AD, he doesn't have health issues.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

But unless the games are gonna be played like the Rising Stars Challenge I don't see Booker, Murray or Russell being anywhere near the best player in the world conversation.

I mean if one of those guys turned into Lillard their team would be thrilled and he's like a fringe top 15 guy
