"Champions League Rd of 16: the Arda they come"

We get a bunch of very decent matchups this round, with every game achieving some degree of watchability. I'm not expecting much of PSG, and unless Cavani goes supernova today the die might be cast for the French champs. But since we're not playing Caen or Bordeaux...

Tue 14 Feb
2:45 Benfica - Borussia Dortmund
2:45 Paris Saint Germain - FC Barcelona

Wed 15 Feb
2:45 Bayern Munich - Arsenal FC
2:45 Real Madrid - Napoli

Tue 21 Feb
2:45 Bayer Leverkusen - Atletico Madrid
2:45 Manchester City - Monaco

Wed 22 Feb
2:45 FC Porto - Juventus
2:45 Sevilla - Leicester City

------------------------------
For the record, my teams:
MLB: Mets / Soccer: PSG
NCAA BB: Arizona / NCAA FB: Michigan
NBA: Spurs / NFL: Jets

I wasn't sure about putting Matuidi in an unconventional position again (as against Arsenal), but it's working. Helped by Barca's strange lack of sync to be sure, but with what Di Maria and Draxler are doing on the wings (interesting that the two times they switched led to 2 shots and 1 goal) and Verrati/Rabio eating up the middle, I'm cautiously optimistic we may not fuck this up.

Let's see what the second half brings

I've been hating a lot, for what I still feel are valid reasons, but he's got the team ready for d day, and there's no fronting on that. One thing in particular I gotta give him credit for is his trust in the youth. We finished the game with three kids from the academy yesterday. Rabiot and Kimpembe played like BAWSES all day. Granted, this is the mission statement Nasser handed him, but there's no way Blanc plays Presnel last night...he would have come up with a 3 5 2 or some shit.

Also:,Kluivert claiming Draxler was clutch

Also: Angel is a big game player

I've been reading that this was only a good atmosphere as far as the Qatari years go (aka nothing to do with the 90s era), but it's still cool to feel that energy radiate through the screen. Last time I went to le Parc was for a drab 0-0 against Montpellier, so I'd love to go back one day if the stands keep being allowed to amp things up.

also, Rabiot-Kante-Pogba in Russia... I might have to not boycott that, dammit

not sure I made that clear

it's only on the Auteuil side that they can purchase group tickets and bring in props, so that's the only place where they have flags, drums, banners, etc
as a result, the call and response (ALLEZ PARIS/PARIS EST MAGIQUE) is a bit underwhelming

but still, I felt it was loud pretty much the whole game yesterday

leo looked unengaged, suarez was a ghost, andre gomes took forever to make mediocre decisions, iniesta was absolutely unable to keep up, busquets was a step slow the whole game, s. roberto was underwhelming and proved why aleix vidal took his starting role, and alba didn't help neymar out at all.

pique and umititi were ok. MAtS saved it from being 6-0, and Neymar tried. that's IT.

seemed like the ship had been righted this weekend. this was pathetic.

I think that at the half, Bayern collectively looked around the dressing room, and said, "oh yeah, we're Bayern."

Meanwhile, in the visitor's dressing room, Arsenal said, "oh yeah, we're Arsenal."

About the 1000th time you can say that in the past 10 years.

How long are we going to sit around and do the same ole shit with the same ole results? O yeah, until Wenger decides to retire. How many fucking times do you have to see the same thing happen year in and year out before you need to make a change to the make-up of the team? If the manager cannot see that, then you obviously need to change the manager. It's just the fucking reality.

SAME SHIT, DIFFERENT YEAR.

of course they may try the cheap option with Koeman, or somewhere in between by pursuing Tuchel (+PEA?). Interestingly Barca is allegedly surveying both of them as potential Enrique replacements

obvs the historical parallel would be interesting (both coming over from Monaco), but from a strict tactical POV he'd be a huge catch. Also he's proven he can work with a limited budget and youngsters, should Arsenal decide they like their spending strategy

that wasn't a dive man, the only angle/replay it looked like that was the last super slo-mo one from behind, and that's how it looks when you run really fast lol your feet aren't on the ground. The keeper slowing down doesn't matter, he still swung his leg out and caught his shin, it wasn't low to the ground (he was 'airborne').
