That Michigan situation cast him in a negative light. But honestly if he had the talent/coaching on Defense that they have now. They would have at least won a B1G title during his time there.

That WVU run was arguably more impressive than what Chip did at Oregon. He was a hair away from a BCS title game himself.

Not that any of this matters.

That RR didn't get to coach Denard his whole time at UM is tragedy

but like San Francisco last year, it probably doesn't matter either way, right down to the onetime Top 10 draft pick Jags QB, that nobody really thinks can play.

there's no evidence at this point that he has anything to bring that's very different from other coaches, but the jags are gonna jags no matter who they hire.

This is demonstrably not true.

How can he be vilified for his system that "doesn't work in the NFL" on the one hand, and then you say he isn't doing anything anyone else isn't doing?

It can't be both.

His approach is definitely different, and has been successful in the league. I wouldn't let him anywhere near a GM chair tho.

and yeah, they dropped a lot of the talent, but he was the GM, so I can only assume he had the talent he thought he needed to run the system.

somehow he didn't even seem that interesting in SF, but I'll cop to not closely watching that train wreck.

He created his mess in Philly by demanding too much power and having no idea what to do with it. He had 0 ability to run a full team, but if all he had to do was call plays for the players that more qualified people put around him and be responsible for nothing else how disastrous could it get? Especially for a team like the Jags

I think up tempo was his claim to fame.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

In response to Reply # 0

per Greg Bedard (SI.com):

"They've made a lot of money in business, but it's incredible to me how far out of their depth they really are on this," said one executive. "They have absolutely no idea what they're doing. Look at Jacksonville. They keep Marrone--I mean, he was an assistant head coach on that team the past two years (8–24), was he not?--and say he's by far the best candidate. After speaking to McDaniels, Shanahan and Mike Smith? Are you kidding?

"He was obviously the best candidate to give that whole group another shot at proving they put together a good team and quarterback. Bulletin: They're not that good, it wasn't Gus's fault. And then, after hiring Marrone, the owner hires Tom Coughlin to oversee everything. Basically he's telling GM Dave Caldwell what to do? How else is that going? I don't know. I think that most of these places are screwed up."

"I think the one thing about these jobs is the only way for true success is if you're philosophically aligned in everything that you do," said another executive. "And that means everything. From how you grade draft prospects to what your philosophy is on surgeries to your free-agent process and your position descriptions. There's a laundry list of things that you have to have the right partner. You can't be trying to mesh two philosophies that are different. It's just very difficult. Somebody's got to be the bull, whether it's the GM or the coach, and they both have to see everything the exact same way."
