"Chargers to Los Angeles (ESPN swipe)"

They really gonna have two NFL teams and USC play in the Coliseum for the next two years? Rams weren't exactly setting the city on fire last year, but you knew the NFL wanted a second team there at some point and the Raiders seem destined for Vegas.

How you feel about this San Diego? Sad? Do you people get sad? I guess they're only a couple hours north, but now the only thing repping your city are the Padres.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/18455802/chargers-expected-announce-move-san-diego-los-angeles

Almost one year to the day that the Rams moved to Los Angeles, the Chargers now are planning to do the same.

The Chargers plan to announce as early as Thursday that they are moving to Los Angeles, ending a 55-year stint with San Diego and returning to their birthplace, league sources said.

The Chargers played their inaugural season in Los Angeles in 1960 before moving to San Diego in 1961.

The Chargers have notified NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and other league owners, of their intent to move to Los Angeles for the 2017 season, sources said.

But as one league source cautioned Thursday night, Chargers chairman Dean Spanos has yet to send a formal relocation letter to the NFL, yet to notify public officials in Los Angeles or San Diego of the team's move, or even tell the members of the San Diego organization about his plans. The source insisted nothing is final.

But unless Spanos unexpectedly changes his mind at the last moment -- and there certainly have been enough plot twists in this San Diego stadium saga -- the Chargers will be moving to Los Angeles.

This is said to have been an extremely difficult decision for Spanos to reach, sources said. While the economics of the decision have been crystal clear, Spanos' loyalty and connection to San Diego have countered it. But in the end, Spanos' efforts to find a new stadium are now in their 16th year, with no solution in sight. This stalemate is occurring at a time when the Rams are becoming more established in the Los Angeles market. Spanos is said to believes he needs to start fighting for the Los Angeles market as soon as possible.

As of Wednesday night, the Chargers' intent is now to become the second team in less than a year to move to Los Angeles, ending the 55-year stint with San Diego and giving Los Angeles two NFL teams after going more two decades without having one.

There are some whispers that the stadium might not be ready in two years.

I think it sucks. First off, Chargers have an anti-fan base here since there are so many Raiders fans still around. I feel like the Chargers/Raiders game could be mostly Oakland fans.

The Rams made sense because they were here but I'm bummed that San Diego is losing them if only, selfishly, because it's one less reason to go visit San Diego.

I also think they could face some problems because fans won't be so gung ho to buy tix the first two years. I bought Rams tickets thinking I could sell them but the Coliseum is so big and people care so little that I had to literally give them away. I'd have to think that most people are just going to wait until the secondary market for tickets for the Chargers.

The only plus is it's more likely that I can go catch a Pats game vs. SD than the Rams.

How is that going to work, even on a temporary basis? Might as well just keep them in SD until the new stadium is ready.

The Chargers also started out in LA but a million years ago and stayed briefly.

I think it's funny that they will play in the Galaxy stadium. The Coliseum is a dump but at least it seats the appropriate number of people, kind of (more than necessary if anything).

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

And Spanos wants the value of his franchise to do likewise, so they'll be more attractive to potential new buyers. Or it gives him an even more valuable thing to pass on to his (probably) shitty kids.

I can't imagine the Chargers value will shoot up THAT much, since they'll be a tenant in Inglewood instead of the owners. But it will probably increase significantly.

The fans tune out easily but they go hard for an above average to good team. Obviously it was damning last year not to see ratings down versus the top national games (that seemed obvious, the Rams sucked) but that more people in STL watched them than here lol. Still that is just a bump in the road. This was a no-brainer business decision, LA is a way better market than SD for the franchise and the league. The only reason it took this long was the lack of a stadium and public funding for it in LA.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

This looks generic as hell.

Also the Rams are switching to blue and white when the new stadium opens, so it would make even less sense for the Chargers to go with that color scheme (I imagine they'll keep the unis they have until then.)

man.... talk about coming in going minor leagues...

I don't even think Stubb Hubb seats 30k...

man if we played a city championship game there against Carson High we could fill Stubb hub...

they playing in what's basically a high school stadium...

spanos may be the worst active owner...

you leaving all the money in San Diego and South Orange county to come play in the Stubb hub center then to lease Inglewood 150 Miles away from your strong established fan base...and play 2nd fiddle to the Rams???

terrible...

I know it's huge and you'd see a lot of empty seats, but it's there. You'll see quite a few empty seats, but that's going to be the case anywhere before they get to the new stadium. At least that will be able to hold more when they play the Raiders or a team people actually want to see.

http://www.espn.com/los-angeles/nfl/story/_/id/13225311/rose-bowl-temporary-host-nfl-franchise

The Los Angeles Times says operators won't submit a proposal to become a temporary home to an NFL franchise considering a move to Southern California. Wednesday night's vote was unanimous.

Members of the Rose Bowl Operating Co. said they'd rather focus on landing an annual music and arts festival for the landmark arena.

Getting any big event booked there beyond the already scheduled UCLA games and the Rose Bowl is a pain cause the neighbors will fight it tooth and nail. The occasional concert still happens but 10+ NFL games is a no go.

them accepting playing in Stubb Hubb is very telling..it's basically them admitting they don't have a fan base here in Los Angeles.. so plyin at the coliseum or Rose bowl would just highlight that even more. Plus playing in the Stubb hub would cost a lot less than the Coliseum or Rose bowl.... or Anaheim Stadium which would have made the most sense...

If you look at the history of this.... this is an epic fail for Spanos...

he could have had LA all to himself if he had accepted the deal for the Downtown LA stadium that was already set until he backed out at the last minute..... He's shown a complete inability to get a deal done in San Diego...which is a wealthy solid market....yet tried to use a Carson privately funded plan as leverage against Kroenke moving to LA.....

and what does he end up with???

2 or 3 seasons in what amounts to a high school football stadium, then leasing as 2nd fiddle to Stan Kroenke and the Rams....miles away from their dedicated base of fans.....

this is an amazing failure of ownership.....and honestly the league should have stopped this from happening.....and I wouldn't be surprised if they actually do....

Spanos and the Chargers are getting ripped in the media throughout the stat of California right now.

as the top team in Los Angeles...

Ram fans who were a bit bummed at the way the season ended...yet enthusiastic about the coaching change..... Now you basically have lit a fire underneath Ram fans in Los Angeles by bringing a team that doesn't have the strong base into our backyard..

it's not like the Clippers and Lakers.... sure Laker fans may not like the Clippers..but they don't hate them because of the years of futility the Clippers had here for so long...there's nothing fun about hating the Clippers...part of you feels sorry for them in a way, and if they would ever make it to the finals...Laker fans would be pulling for them..

the Chargers are outsiders....no real connection to LA...and no reason to feel sympathy or empathy for them..

in fact them coming here saved us money as season ticket holders because now the PSL prices will be a lot less...

if you peep the internet right now, Ram fans are fired up right now...and we'll name a new coach any minute now and blow the Chargers up even more...

if anything, you're gonna suffer from market saturation in a market that won't show up to football games unless you're winning.

a couple more seasons of third-place finishes in the nfc west, and no one's gonna give a fuck. just too many distractions/things to do in LA than be bothered with more gridlock. (lived there for 20 years and still visit family a few times a year)

Go on twitter....stream some LA sports talk radio...

Ram fans are drooling over the idea of having to compete in the same market with a team that can't even sign their draft picks on time even with a rookie salary cap....and who is going to play in a 30k seat stadium.....and unveiling a logo that looks like the winner of an elementary school contest...

Chargers are downgrading from 70k stadium to a 30k stadium to play somewhere where nobody really likes them except for the San Diego transplants. It's an L on all fronts. If they really think they can only fill a 30k stadium, they shouldn't be moving to LA.

Meanwhile, the biggest things on the map in Carson besides the MLS stadium is a couple of Shell Oil Refineries. Honestly, the only way to salvage this IMO would be if they just called themselves The Long Beach Chargers or something. LBC! But then you don't move to LA to not take the LA name.

Either way, they're basically moving to LA and immediately establishing themselves as the Angels equivalent instead of the Dodgers.

In response to Reply # 0

I mean, if you've got the chance to put two shitty franchises in a market that doesn't give a fuck, you gotta do it right? These moves feels like the hubris before the fall. I could be wrong, but I can't see how this works out well, unless one or both of these franchises breaks with recent history and starts winning a lot.

The Chargers are a preseason favorite for worst home field advantage in NFL history

LA is already bored with the Rams, and didn't last 8 games before jumping ship. Anyone remember why the Rams left in the first place? Cuz LA legit didn't give a fuck about mediocre football.

LA as an NFL market is being vastly oversold. The Raiders had a better chance of making it work, and even then they already tried that once to not much success.

I'm not sure on the politics of it all, but I hope Chargers players are looking forward to stadiums that are less than half full and fans that don't give a fuck.

crazy distractions, good weather, beach right there, fly ass women, sells the dream really well to outsiders

aka not a good sports market for teams that don't do well or plain suck. Small minority of hardcore ride or die fans, vast majority of fairweather only support when they win fans

Ain't shit to do in Green Bay or Dallas, hence why they have hardcore fanbases win or lose. LA and Miami have the glitz and glamour curses

Did I mention I think football is an overrated sport that uses to many school resources?? (Ducks on the way out.)

a sounders season beats even payton-era total attendance for the sonics.

and the seahawks have been good. most of the city's all-too-happy to not care and then go all out on the bandwagon when appropriate.

They put several things on the ballot over the years.

The latests was Measure C:
1)They wanted to raise the Hotel Room Tax and use that money to pay for the stadium. Basically the pitch was "Let's tax tourists for the stadium - because - um - they're coming here to see The Chargers play."

They'd sell bonds to the public - then the tax money would pay the public back.

But if the taxes collected didn't pay enough then San Diego would either have to not pay the bonds (which would lower our credit rating) or we'd have to pay from the city's money - money that would be used to pay for cops, or trash, or roads.

2)Tehy chargers would pay $15 million a year towards it.
But the catch is that money is not "rent" - they don't have any rent under the deal.

And we'd be giving them land that was currently in use - land used for storing our buses and general parking downtown - we'd have to replace those parking spots - and the city would have been on the hook for it all.

Measure D:
This was trying to get $350 million to fix up Qualcomm Stadium. It did other things - but still $350 million was too much.

We also had a stupid Convention Center expansion built into this. basically the stadium would also have convention center room in it - but it's like 3 blocks form the existing convention center and no one was real interested.

What the Chargers could have done:
1)They could have won a Superbowl last year - that would have probably got the public behind them. I say MIGHT because most San Diegans think the Chargers and especially the Spanos family are assholes.

2)Spanos could have spent his own damn money (and matching funds from the NFL) and refurbished Qualcomm.

San Diego - on the whole - thinks that The Chargers are a crummy team with greedy management. And Spanos did very little to change that perception.

Next up: We need to get Comic Con out of San Diego.

San Diego is a solid market....with lots of money from SD county as well as OC county.... unfortunately they had an owner who at the end of the day was small time and couldn't make anything happen in SD, deciding to coattail a real baller in LA...

it's sad though for San Diego....they have a lot of history there and great fans....

they now move to the top of the potential relocation sites for future NFL teams..... maybe Jacksonville down the road.

Chargers announce move to Los Angeles, all that’s left is deciding who to be the most mad at
Posted on January 13, 2017 by Neil deMause

So the San Diego Chargers are moving to Los Angeles, owner Dean Spanos having dropped the other shoe yesterday by releasing this statement and changing their logo before announcing it wasn’t really their new logo after everyone, even the Tampa Bay Lightning social media director, made fun of them. Normally a relocation like this would require a vote of NFL owners to make official, but the league already gave Spanos a “good for one move to Inglewood” coupon last January, so this is a done deal.

There are many, many, many feels that one can have about this, depending on one’s perspective, so why doesn’t one sit down with us and run through them to see how reasonable one is being?

• Rot in hell, Dean Spanos, for taking a team away from the fans who’ve supported it for a half-century! Spanos is definitely screwing over Chargers fans (who have responded by dumping their team gear outside the Chargers office and throwing eggs at the windows, and even trying to set fire to a team flag) in an attempt to make more money. Whether this makes him a greedy asshole or a savvy self-interested businessman is, wait, what’s the difference again?

• Dean Spanos is an idiot for choosing to pay a relocation fee and be Stan Kroenke’s second fiddle in L.A. rather than working something out in San Diego! VERDICT: unproven. Yes, the relocation fee (reportedly $550 million payable over 10 years, which in present value is worth more like $425 million) is a lot, and Spanos is going to need to choose between either paying Rams owner Stan Kroenke a whole lot of rent (or shared revenues, which amount to the same thing) or putting up half the construction cost of the new Inglewood stadium up front, either of which is going to be really expensive. Maybe he thinks he can earn it back from increased revenue in a bigger market (though the NFL is limited in that regard since there are no local TV deals), maybe he was just pissy that San Diego voters didn’t want to give him $1.15 billion. Or maybe he’s an idiot.

• Dean Spanos is an evil genius, now he can sell the Chargers for twice what he was going to get for them in San Diego! This is wisdom so conventional that people feel authorized to tweet about it like it’s true, but like all franchise value claims, it’s really just guesswork: Nobody knows how much more some theoretical billionaire would be willing to pay for the Los Angeles Chargers than for the San Diego Chargers, especially not until we see how popular they’ll be sharing that market with the Rams, and with that unfriendly lease that will saddle them with uncounted future costs. Only Spanos’s bean counters know for sure, and while it’s a fair bet that he’ll come out ahead since otherwise he wouldn’t be doing this (though see above re: pissy and/or idiot), it’s probably not going to be a double-your-money deal.

• The NFL is going to regret this, nobody in L.A. wants to watch the dumb old Rams and Chargers! Certainly the Rams’ first season in L.A. wasn’t a raging success, with fans coming disguised as empty seats and TV ratings down relative to when L.A. football viewers were watching other cities’ teams. But the Rams and Chargers aren’t going to be pathetic excuses for football teams forever (probably), so maybe things will improve, and this won’t end up being a giant embarrassment for the league. Though that wouldn’t be any fun at all.

• This is all San Diego’s fault for refusing to give Spanos a new stadium! To football fans’ credit, this viewpoint mostly seems to be limited to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who released a “Hey, we tried” statement following the announcement of the Chargers’ move. There were plenty of city officials willing to talk to Spanos about a new or renovated stadium (though they were limited in how much public money they were willing to/able to provide for one), but between the owner’s demand that the city fork over the lion’s share of the costs and the time limit on the relocation clause that meant Spanos had to move to L.A. now if he ever wanted to, there wasn’t time to work on that.

• Wait, the Chargers are going to play in a soccer stadium for two years?! Yup. On the bright side, see above about nobody wanting to see the team play right now anyway.

• At least San Diego taxpayers can still watch the team on TV if they want, without having to pay $1.15 billion in tax money as well! Also yup.

• Sports is a festering cesspool of greed and extortion, less about putting out a good product than about an arms race among owners to build opulent stadiums with other people’s money! Well, duh.

If there’s a silver lining for wannabe haters, it’s that unlike in the typical stadium controversy, this looks set to be a tragedy in the Shakespearean sense, where all the major players end up dead on the battlefield thanks to hubris or stupidity or what have you. The San Diego Chargers may be dead, but San Diego Chargers schadenfreude is just beginning.

Overall this is a who fucking cares situation for everyone except the poor diehard Chargers fans. Hopefully they are liberated to do what LA fans did for 20 years, be mercenaries who can front run or pick a team based on its jersey or who is on their fantasy team. Remind me why I should give a shit about the NFL and all its sleazy actors again?

Another bum ass franchise in town to clutter up my TV when I could be watching a better game and jam the freeways on the only fucking day when there was no traffic. Wonderful. It's a shame San Diego lost them but not that much of a shame. It's a painfully mediocre sports city with the painfully mediocre teams to match.

From the fans' standpoint, they feel almost as abandoned as Colts' fand did when the moving vans pulled up in Baltimore. But, as much as people talk about the loyal fanbase, if you've watched Charger games at Jack Murphy, road teams took over the stadium numerous times over the past few years, some times embarrassingly so.

The stadium is way behind the times compared to just about every other stadium in the league except maybe Oakland's. The Chargers have tried to get a new stadium built for over 10 years, asking for funds from the public (just like all the other cities have), and from what I've seen, the latest proposal was basically a tax based system based on "sin" and entertainment taxes fr the most part. (If this is incorrect please correct me). They stayed in town this season to try to get this last peoposal through on the ballot, but when it failed fairly miserably, that was the last straw.

For Spanos and the team, this is a money decision, simple and plain. New market, new logo, new revenue stream. They seem very happy to take the short term P.R. hit to get the long term green...and even if this leads to a new stadium in another city, all the better.

It sucks for the fans in San Diego, but they played a part in the spolit. Now the Chargers are gone, the new logo sucks, and they mau well be second fiddle to the Rams and 4th fiddle when you include USC and UCLA. If they get the losing turned around fairly quickly, most of the bad taste will disappear..if not...

Some will tell you that they love you but they've got an ulterior motive - Oh what a shame
They will tell you that they need you but they've got an ulterior motive - Personal gain

People are pissed this week.

Like 25 moving companies have said they will not help physically move them.

Dudes at the gym are having heated conversations about it.

The mayor was damned near in tears.

I don't know how many people are going to make the drive up in the first year to see games, but it's not gonna to be a ton.
