"2017 Washington DC Football Team Offseason Post"

there's gonna be a lot going on to keep it in the 2016 season post.

Barry's out. Who do we get to replace him?

What do we do with Kirk?

What WRs do we keep and let go?

Are we gonna spend on and improve the D?

Let's talk about it.

you get after you've proven yourself. Usually 2 year deals.

They don't really exist in the NFL and for good reason. These guys beat themselves to hell without guaranteed money.

But it would be a dream scenario for WFC: to keep Cousins but not commit to a big 6 year $25M/year deal.

If they take a hard line Kirk would walk and just go to the highest bidder. But you never know.

Need them both for Gruden's offense to be potent. I like Crowder but am ambivalent about him taking Jackson's place.

he has been great for us this year. having all 3 is ideal. and yeah, ya can't touch djack's speed, man. but i also like how we used him toward the end of the season with shorter routes and YAC. mix it up with djack, keep the dbs guessing and uncomfortable when he's on their side, or in the slot.

I don't think Crowder's a huge deep threat but he is a future elite slot WR. (he does go deep sometimes though)

Doctson is the wild card in all of this. If he can develop as a big body threat, that changes the equation.

But yeah, the team is almost set at the WR position. Vernon Davis was a nice surprise this year. If we can, I'd want to keep him too. But really if we can't keep Jackson and Davis, then a good offseason signing on the defensive side of the ball is a must.

Duke was about as professional as he could be in that response.

Cooley's film work continues to be illuminating but he undermines it when he goes off the rails like this.

I listen to it the day after every game. He points out things that I wouldn't see otherwise.

To his credit, he's defended Kirk a lot these last couple of seasons but he absolutely CRUSHED him after the NYG game. Which was accurate.

- When the lights got bright and he had the opportunity to lead the team to the playoffs, he didn't do it. He didn't turn in the money making performance he or anyone else would've liked. The players aren't sold, I've seen interviews with Pierre, and Jordan. Pierre was political, Jordan was just like he's our guy, but he's not the best yet.

That interception, Jimmy should've caught the ball, but the ball also should've been out front. It doesn't matter, for whatever reason folks just don't go all in on him. I wonder what the stories will be when he leaves.

Unless of course you know he turns the corner.

The problem is what if he goes the other way and he decides he's cool on Washington and we loose what could've been a franchise guy?

Now granted I don't think he'll play that way, but i'm just saying

That is exactly what I am afraid of. And I think with this city's luck, it's likely to happen. I personally don't think he has it. At all.....

I say this because the same weaknesses that were in his game last season were all too apparent this year as well. I didn't see much of any improvement in the guy. So he's serviceable, with a top 10 defense, but I really wouldn't want to commit anything to him.

He'll get better, but will he take the leap to Elite? I'm not sure, I mean it took Matty Ice MAD years to get to where he is and when the bright lights were on, it was time to show up, he takes a sack that in hind sight cost them a chance to salt that game.

I see a lot of Kirk in him.

He's better than any option out right now, so we've got to pay him. its that simple.

That is one of the reason's why Matt Ryan is so successful because he has an insane amount of talent. If you pay Kirk, you have to be sure that he has adequate talent.

He's still no Joe Flacco though. Joe clutch. Kirk is not. I hate paying non-clutch players.

I agree though, he isn't a dude that's going to win without the proper if not top of the line toys.

One practice last year Desean was out hurt, didn't even stay to watch practice got in his truck and left the park altogether. He probably isn't a total asshole, but I would imagine his overall effort and engagement is minimal; pretty sure this last offseason was his first where he attended all workouts.

By all accounts, Pierre is as professional as a football player can get. Would love for
Him to stay, but can't blame him if he wants to go to Pittsburgh, Green Bay, or back to Indy even.

But you look at his touchdowns and wins, it's another story. Kirk is great, even advanced stats say he's good, but the eye test doesn't exactly match his statistics.

Might have to bite the bullet and sign him at market rate. I wouldn't sign him higher than Andrew Luck, which is unfortunately, the contract he wants.

Why didn't you just work this deal out last year with frontloaded money? you had the flexibility last year, now your gonna drive the qb market up over this deal after he gets through this franchise tagged year. Even if he gets injured, he will still get paid on whatever team he goes to.

I highly suggest the skins give cousins what he asked for BEFORE the end of the year, or yall are screwed.

This deal should have gotten done last offseason.

One more year to prove you're not a fluke-okay.

He did that. Mostly. I think they are just buying time right now with using the tag again. Hoping the 49er's will bite since Kyle is their guy now.

Sorta sad that we'll most likely have to part with Garcon and Jackson, but they are both relatively old, and most likely want to go elsewhere. I think Jackson is gone regardless of money.

So, with all that said, they need to dump some money on the defensive side of the ball. If Kirky gets traded and both our big playmaking receivers leave, there's no reason not to shore up that D-line.

the skins are a fucking mess...

scot is stating he is out tending to his grandmother's funeral arrangements. she passed away on february 6 and the funeral was feb 13th.

the skins are saying he's not there for personal reasons.

106.7 the fan is reporting that he was sent home from the team on feb 20th.

no word from scot or the skins as of yet.

this shit is crazy.

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2017/03/02/scot-mccloughan-absent-from-redskins-park-since-february-20th/

INDIANAPOLIS — Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan was sent home from the team on Feb. 20, a source has told 106.7 The Fan, and he is not at this week’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Reached for comment, McCloughan texted that he is away dealing with the death of his 100-year-old grandmother.

His grandmother, Marie Bessie McCloughan, died on Feb. 6, according to an obituary in the Loveland (Colo.) Reporter-Herald newspaper. The paper reported that the funeral was scheduled for Feb. 13.

McCloughan said the report that he’d been ordered to stay away from Redskins Park on Feb. 20 was “not true”. He said it would “take seven days” to go through the funeral process for his grandmother.

Multiple Redskins officials were seen entering the Crowne Plaza hotel in Indianapolis on Wednesday evening for interviews with college draft prospects. Among them were coach Jay Gruden, senior personnel executive Doug Williams, director of pro personnel Alex Santos and multiple scouts. Neither McCloughan nor team president Bruce Allen were seen entering the meeting.

Washington’s front office is in the middle of a hectic time. McCloughan and his staff are primarily responsible for the draft, which is April 27. The NFL Combine is a major part of that effort and March is a month full of college Pro Days. The Redskins are still hoping to sign quarterback Kirk Cousins to a long-term contract. They used the franchise tag on him Tuesday.

McCloughan has been shielded from reporters for months. He last spoke at a formal podium session last May 4 after the 2016 draft. He did not talk to reporters at all at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. in late January, politely declining requests. He did not hold a press conference after the season, either. Last month, Redskins radio analyst and former tight end Chris Cooley openly speculated on air that McCloughan was drinking.

The 46-year-old McCloughan has had issues with alcohol before. He was fired as general manager of the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 and lost a job as a senior personnel executive with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014. Writer Seth Wickersham chronicled McCloughan’s alcohol dependence in a Dec. 2014 ESPN The Magazine article. McCloughan cooperated on the piece and within a month was hired by Washington as its general manager.

McCloughan repeatedly denied that he had been sent away from the team on Feb. 20.

“I’m taking care of my family, plain and simple,” McCloughan said.

Yet the same source told 106.7 The Fan that McCloughan had been marginalized in recent months. Williams has taken on a larger role in his absence.

CHOICE QUOTE:
"The source added 'GM (Scot McCloughan) has nothing to do with anything and has not for very long time.' "

- is Scot just a drunk and deserved to be let go? Seems very likely, but maybe not.

- is Allen preying on people's prejudices and leaking this information to the media? Diabolical, but definitely possible.

- if you were a certain QB steeped in super-sensitive negotiations determining your future, would you give these guys the benefit of the doubt? Probably not.

- Is Dan Snyder still the owner? Yes. Yes he is. This is the only absolute.

I mean, on the one hand if it's on Scotty, it's on Scotty.

If his drinking has resurfaced and has become problematic, then I actually have to give the front office some credit for trying to let the man save a bit of face by getting his act together.

My fear though is that this is some botched power play by Bruce Allen (with shadow backing by He Who Will Not Be Named) in order to get control of personnel and start playing fantasy football with the roster again.

And you have to wonder how the tough (some say botched) negotiations with Kirk have figured into this?

Why can't this team have some stable respectable aspect to it for like 10 years? First drama on the field, now in the front office.

if you're the GM, you're essentially the CEO of a billion-dollar enterprise. What the fuck?

Have you guys seen a Ben McAdoo press conference? That guy is the head coach of the NEW YORK GIANTS!!! The Giants could sell for 3 Billion dollars tomorrow.

It's league-wide man. There's Mike Tomlin, there's Bill Belichick, maybe Pete Carroll...and then there's literally dozens of idiots trying to over complicate something as simple as football.

This shit just fascinates me the more I think about it man. Scot told the Post his grandma died and that's why he missed the combine. That's the adult equivalent of "my dog ate my home work"

You can blame it on Snyder if you want - he's certainly a piece of shit - but it isn't like this is the only organization in football employing morons.

Listen to Steve Kerr or Greg Popovich or Brad Stevens or Stan Van Gundy or Doc Rivers communicate and it's like "huh, these guys are actually intelligent"...then watch Kyle Shanahan's introductory press conference from the 49ers where he tries to explain the Super Bowl collapse. It's literally like watching a public school JV basketball team compared to Dematha varsity.

they are both 30 or over. I'd love the both of them for a couple more seasons, but in reality, one or both of them is going to lose a step.

While I love Desean's homerun ability, I think I'd rather retain Garcon. We get more utility out of him. I think we need to keep at least one until we know whether Doctson and Crowder can step up to the plate full time.

he wasn't just going deep, they had him run shorter routes. i think that's a great way to use him because the defense is thinking he's going deep and if he pulls up, makes a catch and then gets some yac it's just as, if not more, effective.

i'd like to keep him and garcon. not sure which i'd pick if i had to choose one of them. garcon is so consistent it'd be hard to pick against him, but djack brings another layer of threat if they mix up his routes.

I am pretty sure both of them will be gone. Chris Baker is up for renewal too and it would be a shame if he left but it's looking quite likely he will be gone too.

No GMSM, no long-term deal for Cousins, new offensive and defensive coordinators....this offseason is gonna be real interesting.

In response to Reply # 0

I mean.........no GM AT THE START OF FREE AGENCY?

For a well run team, this is the period where your savvy gm is reaching out to agents and floating possibilities and numbers and doing most of the necessary finessing to get the best guys for the best numbers. But we're Washington.

So you know what that means right? Best case scenario, someone has Scotty's notes to work from. Maybe the asst. GM?

Worst and most likely case - Bruce Allen and Snyder are basically making the personnel calls in free agency and picking the draft.

SMH.

Is McCloughan in rehab or not?

Was 2 years of a relatively well-run team too much for Snyder not to get involved - so he's sidelined McCloughan because.... reasons?

George Allen is the new Vinny Cerrato.

Even by Snyder's idiotic, egocentric worldview, what possible justification could he have for demoting or firing McCloughan?

In two years McCloughan drafted better than most of the entirety of the Snyder's ~18 year tenure.

Essentially, he feels he doesn't have the power the Skins promised and he feels the Cooley comments were the tipping point in an ongoing smear job on him.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle but it's hard to give the team the benefit of the doubt.

he, like Trump, does not want success unless he alone is getting credit, making the decisions, or being worshipped for it.

Allen is an extension of him. Just like Cerrato was.

Bring in the best drafting executive of the past 15 years but not letting him hire his own fucking staff was the most telling thing Snyder has done since he hired two offensive coordinators at one time.

at that number even if he would have regressed a bit in the 2016 season, you can still salvage the operation.

At that friendly a number, and with the stockpiled draft picks, mitigating a bad decision (if it turned out to be one, which it didn't) would have been much easier.

Now they're talking about he could command $24-26 million?

Damn, this organization is ran by clowns.

It has, its the worst case scenario. Why in the fuck does Bruce Allen even have a job. They've allowed all of the talent to leave the cupboards an we're now at the point where we're going to overspend on free agents who won't help us and its going to be a tough season to watch.

- Snyder has done it again. We had a really good talent evaluation guy in house making good moves and we handcuffed him.

Hearing that we could've had Kirk done and moved on changes literally everything from this offseason. Desean or Pierre could've still been here, but instead we have none. Chris baker gone, but we re-signed VERNON doe!!! WHAT THE FUCK.

This team is a mess, they're making it so hard to be a fan. Like i don't want to cheer for them.

WHY?????!!!!

Unless Allen brings in someone really good and overpays. Kirk isn't staying for this clusterfuck. And he shouldn't.

We're almost back to square one again. No real GM. No real talent. At least we got tons of cap space. And a pretty dern average head coach with a below average coaching staff.

I don't even care about the draft now. Just let this be all over with.

We're about to let a QB go, we let a high caliber talent evaluator go for NO reason other than the owner and yes man are jealous that the fans rightfully credit him with building a winning roster. All of our talent that made us good has either already left or is in the process of leaving.

We are right where we were before the Robert year. Maybe a year with Rex Grossman will help. I'm done with this one kid.

Firing the only decent talent man he's ever had just might be it.

Fans finally had faith that he hired someone who actually knew what the fuck he was doing.

To find out he's getting sidelined by Cerrato Jr is unreal.

supposedly, Snyder doesn't want to trade Kirk, especially not to the 49ers, cause he still has a grudge against Shanny Jr. and doesn't want to help him in any way.

This is like an abusive relationship. You won't trade him, you won't commit to a long term deal.....

I feel like this needs to be a Lifetime movie with Kirk as the scorned but trapped lover.

These cats really just don't know what to do with themselves. Either you're gonna let a real GM run the team or you're not. Either you're gonna ride with your qb, or not. So much indecisiveness and ego.

Even if everything the "unnamed team source" says is true, the team knowingly hired a man with a drinking problem that never stopped drinking. You'd think the source would at least be aware of how desperate and stupid this whole ordeal makes the front office look but they clearly don't get it.

Like I said when they hired ex GMSM, talented people stay away from this organization so they're left having to reach for marginal executives.

I couldn't root for another team even if I wanted to, but I don't watch WFC or follow them closely unless they're doing something worth paying attention to.

My weekend time is too valuable to spend 3 hours watching a Dan Snyder shit show.

I had basically quit before RG3's rookie year, but then the most incredible rookie season in NFL history pulled me back in. Then the knee debacle happened and I was out. Then they finally hired a real GM! One completely dedicated to building through the draft! It was what I had been yelling about for over a decade. So I started to pay attention again. And now here we are?

Nah.

WFC is on nearly-permanent wait-and-see status. And my expectations couldn't be lower.

These days when I'm watching football I either watch good teams, my fantasy stars, or I just do something else.

Sadly, there's still enough naive Skins fans who will come out to games. Going 0-16 would at least ensure that the building remains only half full with fans of the opposing team.

In response to Reply # 150

The first pick could've been done by someone who doesn't like football.

The CB with the pulled pectoral at his pro-day, that worries me. When folks pull Pecs its usually tied to roids.

I'm not upset by any of the other picks, the biggest thing is that they have to be developed. Having good drafts means absolutely nothing if the players themselves don't get help developing.

We'll see, impossible to grade drafts until 2 years later

...because I see where this is going; we are in for a catastrophe of a season. I'd be stunned at anything better than 7-9.

Read the tea leaves, we're in for the shit:

- McCloughan mess (who may actually have not been good?)
- Trent Murphy 4 game suspension
- two great receivers walked
- the Kirk fiasco
- no NFL-starting-caliber RB
- Sua Cravens is abruptly retiring

I would of course love to be wrong.

I'm just working off what the man has said about his concerns for happiness and doing something else.

It may be a part of the issue, but a 2nd year player with no significant injuries to date all of a sudden mulling retirement is a bit off the radar.
