"JR Smith has turned into a helluva clutch shooter. Isn't that odd? "
Wed Nov-02-16 08:22 AM by Basaglia

Dude just buries shots when the Cavs need them most. Bron actively hunts for JR inside 7 minutes in tight games, because he know he's good for a couple of bombs.

JR ain't show this in Denver or New York. Most of us looked at him as an erratic choker who you would be crazy to depend on for a bucket.

I guess if you hanging around clutch guys all the time, seeing how they move with confidence and dat "no excuses, just get it done" swag, you start getting clutch, too.

*shrug*

Cle - Shump emerges as valuable lock down defender,(check) occasional offensive punch(wrong) JR shoots 39% from the field,(close 42 then 41) provides occasional scoring lift(check), hits one game winner(idk did he?), eventually finds himself in Blatt's doghouse(wrong), gets fined at least twice by nba or cavs(wrong)

seems like i was mostly right.

We saw what happened when he was the faux #2 in the finals.

11 points on 31% shooting from the field and he almost blew a game with dumb fouls in crunch time.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/2015-nba-finals-cavaliers-vs-warriors.html

Quite similar to the pacer series with the knicks as melo's #2.

place that he'd probably hit a game winner bc he had done that multiple times in NY.

He was their #2 scoring option.

He's nowhere near the #2 option in Cleveland....because the team is much more talented.

That season turned his career around.

It's not even debatable.

He won a Chip as a situational shooter with
the Cavs and GOOD for him

He was the second scoring option with Carmelo,
which makes him spend more energy on offense

but he has always been a good defender

He just has fewer other things to worry about. His
job is to defend and shoot and he does both well

Good for him

But that kind of intensity doesn't just show up at this age. He was always a guy who can defend, not one who regularly did. He had a lot of roles in his career that weren't number two offensive option (and remember, it's not like A'mare wasn't taking shots, even more than J.R., during this era, so it's not like his workload hit some Kobe/Westbrook/Harden usage rate where we start to almost expect some bad defense to creep in), and he was never what he was in the playoffs last year until... well, last year.

False, he did regularly defend in NY. What he wasn't was smart. But while he was in ny, he always was an above average defender...especially under Woodson

>He had a lot of roles in his career that weren't number two
>offensive option (and remember, it's not like A'mare wasn't
>taking shots, even more than J.R., during this era, so it's
>not like his workload hit some Kobe/Westbrook/Harden usage

Amare was mostly injured when JR was here...when he was playing, Amare wasn't the 2nd option...not sure if he was even the 3rd or 4th.

and he was never what he was in the playoffs last year
>until... well, last year.

JR averaged 11points per game on 43% shooting last season (mostly open) 3s. of course, we've never seen him in the role as the team's 4th/5th best player in the playoffs bc he's never been that.

We saw what happened when he was the 2nd best player 2 seasons ago in the finals. He shot 32% and was dumb.

sense associated with it.

>The dude who played for teams that were routinely at the
>bottom of the league in defense

The knicks were 5th, 18th and then 24th in defensive rating with JR so them 'being routinely at the bottom of the league in defense is wrong'

and who they replaced with
>Iman Shumpert (THE GUY WHO BACKS HIM UP RIGHT NOW) to cover
>the better wings in the league

Are you arguing that JR is a better defender than Shump now. If not, what's your point

... yup, that guy is definitely
>not a better defender in a better situation with a better
>leader on a team whose team defense is infinitely better.
>

Your big revelation is that JR is a better individual defender on a team that plays better defense than he is on a team that plays worse defense. lol did you even read what you wrote before you clicked post?

Yeah, he's a better defender than Shump now, and yeah, he's a better team defender and one-on-one defender.

So, you agreed with all that, got mad because you thought it was an obvious point (that you've been steady disputing), but you still got all Trumpy? Knicks fans are so reflexively defensive. Trauma does terrible things to people.

I am not necessarily sure he could have been a Harden/AD/Durant-type in dragging a mediocre roster to the playoffs yearly by himself, but you have to at least give dude a break for being fucking 19, 20, and 21 years old in those seasons and playing next to Tristan Thompson as his second-best player.

Pretty clear to go back to the record and see people's opinion on J.R. prior to the trade to Cleveland. "Good riddance" - "finally somebody else's headache" - "we needed to clean house" etc.. etc...

People were actually criticizing the move to move Waiters in return for J.R. *and* Shump - but many of us knew it was a 2-for-1 and an opportunity to really reap the benefits of their talents under the guru guidance of Lebron - and genuine #TeamBall chemistry that the Cavs would develop.

J.R. has exceeded expectations and has played very clutch - *in the playoffs*. Bruh went fuego on the road in Atlanta with a historic 3-point performance to seal that series - and he came up very big in game 7 last year in the 3rd quarter when nobody could score - hitting 3 huge shots that propelled Cavs momentum.

Now? Yea - he's loose, confident, valued, and is hitting big shots already this year *in the vein of the offense*

But #SadHour still will ensue.

Environment always has and will play a role in player growth and development (same goes for any living thing really lol)...and JR has become a far more dependable and consistent player in Cleveland. That's a huge credit to Lebron and co., and JR himself has said that in recent years, he's finally gotten his outside life under control.

Bron's leadership, particularly the resilient commitment to his teammates, is still under-appreciated and arguably his most important quality.

Blake almost carried injured Choke-P3 to the WCF in 2015 before they choked away a 3-1 series lead. Felton is a very good PnR point guard & he has Blake/DeAndre on the roster.

Tyson and Kidd had rings before that season. JR won one after. And Melo and Felton are presumably the only other core members.

So out of five players on a good team... two were vets with previous rings and one won a ring a few years later. Sure, I buy that.

What's the point here?

In response to Reply # 44

They played way more minutes than Shump did over the course of the season. So you'd have to count them too... and if I'm not mistaken, they don't have rings.

Can't count Shump if you don't count Novak and Prigoni. Them's the rules.

this whole post is stupid and a basa L on multiple levels.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2016/11/jr_smith_provides_strange_expl.html

"I wasn't even paying attention," Smith said. "I don't even remember that."

When Smith asked a reporter to point out the specific play, and was informed of his blunder, being responsible for the uncontested dunk, Smith's response turned even more bizarre, choosing to plead ignorance.

"I didn't even know I was in the game," he said. "My bad."

That guy got 18 ppg and a 6th man award once. That was dope. Otherwise, he's always been a 10-15 ppg scorer, can get hot from 3, can also go very cold, does some dumb things that make you shake your head, can shoot you in a game or out of it type, decent defender, not much to his offensive game besides the 3 after his young athleticism faded.

He is what he is. Don't matter whose team he's on.

He has essentially shut Klay down in two Finals series outside of outbursts in one or two quarters.

He made more 3s than Klay in '15 & had the same eFG% in '16.

Cleveland's role players will perform better at home.

**edit**

Not saying he hasn't look terrible on both ends of the court so far in these Finals, but it's possible you may have upped this post prematurely. I suppose we shall see this Wednesday.
