"CFB Saturday 10.22"

Thursday
Virginia Tech 16, Miami-FL 9 (halftime)
- Both these teams were ranked in the top 20 a couple of weeks ago. I'm old, so this game feels like an old Big East weekday night battle. Miami missed another PAT.

(14) Boise State vs. BYU
- Not their best team, but the Mormons are solid this year and have played a hell of a schedule. they lost to Utah, WVU and UCLA by a combined seven points, while beating the ghosts of Michigan State and Mississippi State. Taysom Hill hasn't been as electric as before, but having two bionic legs and being in your eighth year of college will do that to you. if Boise wants to run the table this is one of their stumbling blocks.

Friday
Cal vs. Oregon
- Two middling Pac-12 teams, but Bears trying to beat the Ducks for the first time in eight years. Is Helfrich really going to be done after this year? I know they are trending horribly but they did win 9 games post-Mariota last season. hell, Urban Meyer struggled after Tebow and had to "retire". Oregon has spent money like a blue blood program and considers themselves top tier, but I'm not sure how many elite coaching candidates want to go there. I guess they're waiting on Chip to get fired.

Saturday
(1) Alabama vs. (6) Texas A&M
- Trevor Knight is great in this offense and they have a legit running back (I thought most of Sumlin's guys have been system backs). But Knight still does some dumb shit a couple times a game and bama is feasting off mistakes this year. A&M's defense is going to have issues with Hurts breaking the pocket.

(10) Wisconsin @ Iowa
- I don't think Iowa is good, but going to Kinnick after a couple big game losses (and before Nebraska) could spell letdown.

(17) Arkansas @ (21) Auburn
Tigers are actually double digit favorites in this one, which I'm not sure I buy but they are coming off a bye.

(19) Utah @ UCLA
https://twitter.com/SWXLindsayJoy/status/788213643938717697

(23) Ole Miss @ (25) LSU
Ed Orgeron back to the scene of the crime. See below:

from SI:

- During an early team meeting, he ripped off his shirt and dared any player to try to fight him.

- He required everyone at practice (players, coaches, managers, etc.) to dive on any fumbled ball. One pile ended with a dislocated shoulder for an assistant coach.

- He went through video coordinators the way Spinal Tap went through drummers. Working 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. isn't sustainable and usually turns counterproductive.

- He chugged Red Bull in the mornings and then charged through the offices banging on a bass drum as assistants tried to work.

- During a lightning delay against Wake Forest in 2006, he put the players through a full-contact scrimmage. The Rebels wound up losing 27–3. The Demon Deacons ran the ball on 53 of 58 plays.

- He wanted to fight reporter Steven Godfrey because Godfrey had reported accurate injury information.

- He demanded that everyone had to run at full sprint between practice stations. Offensive line coach George DeLeone, then a 56-year-old man and a 30-year veteran, would shuffle into post-practice interviews with ice packs around both knees.

old assistant coaches and student trainers diving for loose balls among 300-pounders and elite athletes has me dying. in what world did that make sense for anybody.

but having a gotdamn PADS-ON SCRIMMAGE during a weather delay has to be the most hilarious shit I've read in weeks. you know every player on the team hated his fucking guts for the rest of that season.

thinking your punter can run 30 yards to the sticks from the back of the end-zone is the kind of thinking I want to see on Thursday night. Boise nearly gave the game away themselves with their 18 turnovers.

Cal vs Oregon.

Cal hasn't beat Oregon in 8 years and we probably don't have the defense or any defense to beat them or anyone else the rest of the season. Our only hope is the offense can put up 70 and not turn the ball over.

A&M is a good team that will score. they have a good shot of upsetting the tide. trevor will have all the confidence in the world and why wouldn't he? hopefully that becomes over confidence and leads to bad decisions.

but bama should still when this game. the Oline needs to get it right tho. Cam hasn't been that great and garrett can make it a long day for him and Hurts.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

obviously this is not all on coaching -- you can't be this bad without bad players -- but it's a tough look right after his Michigan stint.

He coached the DL himself and by the time its said and done hes gonna have like 7 of his guys in the NFL

I thought this would work, and kinda still think it can. But outside of Mattison, every assistant he hired at UM was a bum. So there is that to consider.

safety and corner just doubled the receiver screen and let the slot run right past them for a TD.

high percentage they convert that 4th down and if u don't want to go for it at least send your punter out there. webb shanking it 10 yards put oregon right back in that game and prob should've lost.

Wildcats turned it over three times (Texas had none) but also held the ball for 40 minutes.

Texas is 3-4, 1-3 in the Big 12 and will probably only be favored in one remaining game:

vs #9 Baylor
@ Texas Tech
vs #12 West Virginia
@ Kansas
vs. TCU

bama just shanked one from 29 yards. Ohio State, Clemson and WVU are the only playoff contenders with kickers in the top 40 for national efficiency.

bama (80th), Washington (85th), Michigan (94th) and Louisville (94th) are not very good at all.

Q. This will sound like second-guessing. It’s 14-6, you go for the field goal. You’re still going to need a touchdown. What was the thought process there?

COACH FERENTZ: You have to score twice. It gets down to that. Somehow, some way you’re going to have to score twice. If there’s a little bit less, fourth-and-two, something like that, we probably would have gone for the touchdown.

Q. 14-6, if you get the touchdown and the two-point conversion, you have a tied ballgame.

COACH FERENTZ: The situation we were in, we felt that was the best play. Fourth-and-five against these guys is not easy, especially down there in the red zone. We didn’t see that as a high-probability play. We’re going to have to get back there again. Kind of the thinking there.

Our defense was actually pretty good until this game but they got absolutely dominated today, and our own run game is a fucking kangaroo court of the highest proportions. How a team with a bunch of 4 star offensive linemen and 4 and 5 star RBs is almost dead last in rushing the ball is beyond me.

are we thinking the Spartans rally the troops and give Michigan a game next week? or Michigan unloads three years of frustration and annihilates little brother?

I'm guessing the latter. could be close early because Michigan will be jacked up (their juniors and most seniors have never beaten Sparty) but this will end up ugly.

The psychological effects will echo throughout the sparty fanbase for a long time. Actually they will probably just pretend they dont care and say they are just waiting for basketball.

The line should be around 30, and UM should cover easily.

Baker Mayfield

524 yards
15.9 YPA

Patrick Mahomes II
44/77
655 yards
8.5 YPA
4 TD 1 INT

not sure what's crazier:

- Mayfield *averaging* 16 yards per ATTEMPT
- Mahomes throwing it 77 times (cue Drew Brees vs Wisconsin)

I'd like to see Victor and Mack get some opportunities at WR. Campbell, Clark, and Mcclaurin simply don't have it.

OSU might have been able to make a case but last night eliminates that.

and mich's schedule eliminates any claim from them.

u can't have a situation where the loser of a regular season game gets the benefit of not having to play in the champ game and gets a free ticket to the playoffs.

compared to when alabama benefited.

also, bama lost early in the year to LSU that year.

with osu/mich it's the last game of the season. you can't have a consolation prize of a free ticket to the playoffs while the winner gets to slug it out again with wisky in the conf champ game.

and right, that LSU-bama rematch basically birthed the four-team playoff though, as the rest of the conferences finally relented (funny how the SEC wanted a playoff for years).

it was just inane bullshit that bama lost the ONE BIG GAME on their schedule, AT HOME, skipped the CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, and were rewarded a championship slot. same would happen if Michigan lost and get voted back in at four.

a) people trying to justify it before the game is even played is just loser mentality 101. Also, it will NEVER happen within the current confines of the tournament. Once they expand it, which they will and it will suck, then it opens the door for the loser of teh game to get in.

apples and oranges. Until the last RichRod and Hoke years we'd clown State fans for having bad seasons and cheering a Michigan loss. That was different because State was having bad seasons couldn't beat us themselves, yet they somehow got joy out of us losing to OSU or whoever.

But Michigan fans have several reasons to cheer OSU losing last night - we are undefeated and may be in the middle of a great season ourselves. OSU losing makes some Michigan fans feel better about our chances of winning The Game. It also makes us look better, since we crushed PSU 49-10 this year.

I don't think like that myself - I'd rather have OSU undefeated so we can try to avenge the 2006 1 vs 2 game. Plus it doesn't really help us - whoever wins that game will go to Indy for a chance at the playoff, and whoever loses should be out (unless something crazy happens elsewhere.) But I still get why some fans want to cheer.

I should be excited beyond belief, but it's been hard for me to generate any kind of excitement for the program. Very nice win for Franklin and the program moving forward. I think that win buys him next season and hopefully some more recruits.

Still very surprised at the outcome. THat was really the only way PSU could have won that game. I thought the 20 point spread was actually generous to PSU.

Franklin needed some kind of ray of light, no matter how improbable. and they had a good gameplan -- run blitz/slant hard on first down to get Ohio State in bad down and distance, where the Buckeyes' awful OT pair get exposed.

although as long as he finished with a winning record, it'd be hard for Penn State to move on from him this offseason. his buyout is $13 million -- which blue bloods can swing, but is still a lot. LSU got off the hook with Miles for $10 million.
